About us

Our company is a second-generation, family-owned business that has provided quality pest control services to the Hampton Roads area since February of 1970. Our goal has always been to provide honest, dependable, and professional service to our customers. We are proud of our 43 year history and we work diligently everyday to continue that level of excellence. Our Owners, Karen and Bill Pye, hold VDACs Commercial Certified Applicator licenses in: wood destroying insects general pest control turf management and ornamentals and are in the office or the field every day Our technicians are all Certified Commercial Applicators with the Virginia Department of Agriculture either when they began employment with our company, or within one year of being employed. This is done to ensure their level of training and expertise is up with A-1′s standards. Our office personnel are Certified Registered Technicians as well, which gives them a firm grasp on pest control services and allows them to be as thorough as possible when answering your questions. Our owners. technicians, and office staff attend monthly training and safety meetings plus Virginia Department of Agriculture(VDAC) training sessions and training sessions offered by our product manufacturers. Description of Work: I used A-1 Exterminators to replace the vapor barrier in the crawl space. They arrived on schedule and did the work as planned. The price was a great deal. Their customer service was excellent. They even called and came out to check the site a few months later. I was happy with their service and used them for pest control a month later.

Description of Work: I had a termite inspection done. While they did the inspection, very high humidity was detected in the crawl space. the technician recommended a dehumidifier be installed. He gave me an estimate of the cost.

Description of Work: Be sure to read the reviews. Ad says, "$99 Termite/Pest Inspection & Treatment - Plus Re-Treatment Warranty and More." The fact they have termite in the coupon description leads customers to believe it will include termite treatment, but it doesn't. Also misleading, "Here's the (partial) Deal: Checking for active termites in or on your home and also for evidence of inactive termite infestations Inspection also includes evaluating possible troublesome conditions conducive to termite and general pest problems such as: ........... No charge One Year Termite Protection and Re-treatment Warranty if home qualifies at conclusion of inspection which includes: 1) Annual Inspection 2) No charge re-inspections when termite activity is suspected 3) No charge termite treatment to infested areas when termites are found to be active in or on the structure The Home Pest Advantage Plan is renewable each year at $239. A-1 Needs to eliminate, "Termite," from the deal to read: "$99 Pest Inspection & Treatment - Plus Re-Treatment Warranty and More." Lastly, in the detail information: Annual Termite treatment rate is not included with purchase.

Response from A-1 Inc Exterminators
We sure wish this member had called us about the "deal" prior to his purchase and certainly prior to his review so we could have avoided such negative feelings. We never had a chance to speak with or meet with this member. This member bought the deal from Angie's List for our Home Pest Advantage Plan. There is absolutely NEVER a time when a customer has to pay more for this particular service. It's a "one size fits all, all homes qualify" service. The terms of the deal are very clear and were reviewed and accepted as understandable by Angie's List prior to posting. Anything posted in an Angie's List Deal is reviewed by them, with advice from them and then approved by them. It doesn't get posted any other way. This particular member bought the deal for $99.00 and set the appointment. We were refused at the door without reason. We assumed it had just turned out to be a bad time for the member. We never had any telephone or in person conversation with the member. The order was placed in "resets" for us and then we got notice that the member had asked for a refund because we had "refused to honor the deal without" further cost. This is just not true. I just had to reach out to this customer to make sure we were both understanding what had happened. The member explained that he had seen a review on Angie's List that said a member that had purchased the same deal was pressed to spend another $1000. I cannot find that review but if this member saw it and it is true, it is most certainly because that member's home had a current, active termite infestation when we first arrived. That's the only scenario I can imagine. One can still take advantage of the Home Pest Advantage Plan even under these circumstances but they do not receive the no charge one year warranty with it. I suspect we had quoted termite treatment to that member. In any case, after getting to speak to this member and addressing his concerns, we have an appointment scheduled for this Friday where we will do a no charge, no obligation inspection (which is something we offer 365 days a year to any consumer with a concern) and we will then see what we can offer the member and determine what, if any, problems or concerns he may have. We hope the member is as eager to provide a follow-up review after that inspection on the 28th (May 2015).

Cannot possibly understand this member's review; overall A but all F's. The member started with us in 2014 with a half off Angie's List deal and then renewed this year and got a free Outside Foundation general pest treatment with an ANGIE'S LIST coupon ($89.00 Value - really!). All went well during the inspection and treatment. Not sure what else we can say aboout this one.

Description of Work: Showed up on time and he listened to my problem, looked and quickly determined they were flying ants. Inspected under the house (crawl space) for about 40 min, everything was ok applied treatment around entire house and spot treated inside the house where we had the flying ants. Very nice and did not try to push any additional plans or anything else. Told me to call if we had any other problems. Very professional and I would use again.

Description of Work: We bought the special for a rental property, and service was prompt and courteous. A1 was forced to reschedule due to weather. They provided moisture testing, as well as termite inspection. They were thorough and professional. Since we hadn't started a routine contract with an exterminator on the home, we chose A1 due to their knowledge, skill, and excellent customer service.

We are truly surprised that this member feels that we "hooked" him. Our Angie's List Deal was very clear about how much area of crawl space the vapor barrier was for (1000 square feet) and even quoted in the deal that additiional square footage needed would be priced at 42 cents a square foot. Even if a homeowner isn't sure about the size of their crawl space, we always measure before doing any work, quote any additional needed and then it is up to the customer whether or not to proceed. And, of course, if the customer is completely dissatisfied and doesn't want to work with us at all, they can always get a full refund from Angie's List. This particular home did need some extra work in the crawl cleaning out but the bulk of what the member spent was on additional items that were completely optional. We are happy to hear the member is satisfied with our work and we will be back out to his home for a quality control visit in 3 months at no charge.

Of course, we're pleased to see that this member was satisfied with our service but, as always, wondering where we could have done better. The member purchased the Big Deal through Angie's List on June 29, 2014 and we responded via the Message Center immediately scheduling her for the first date and time of her choice, July 8, 2014. By all I can see, the inspection and treatment went well and we were even able to point out a plumbing leak in the crawl. The member's warranty paperwork went out to her just 3 days later on July 11, 2014 and we revisited the member's home for our standard six month recheck (at no charge) on December 18, 2014. Again, nothing appeared to be amiss although we did note the plumbing leak was still active, but other than that all went well with no concerns or complaints from the member. Our goal is to be nothing short of the best when it comes to the customer's service and experience with us and we continue to work towards that goal.
