About us

Our company is a second-generation, family-owned business that has provided quality pest control services to the Hampton Roads area since February of 1970. Our goal has always been to provide honest, dependable, and professional service to our customers. We are proud of our 43 year history and we work diligently everyday to continue that level of excellence. Our Owners, Karen and Bill Pye, hold VDACs Commercial Certified Applicator licenses in: wood destroying insects general pest control turf management and ornamentals and are in the office or the field every day Our technicians are all Certified Commercial Applicators with the Virginia Department of Agriculture either when they began employment with our company, or within one year of being employed. This is done to ensure their level of training and expertise is up with A-1′s standards. Our office personnel are Certified Registered Technicians as well, which gives them a firm grasp on pest control services and allows them to be as thorough as possible when answering your questions. Our owners. technicians, and office staff attend monthly training and safety meetings plus Virginia Department of Agriculture(VDAC) training sessions and training sessions offered by our product manufacturers. Responded immediately to call, provided estimate and executed work the next day. The technician was thorough, informative and respectful of property inside and out. I'm very pleased with their job performance. However, I requested that we divide the payments over several months, unfortumately they did not follow through administratively and charged everything to my card immediately. I would definitely use them again and recommend their company

We are very sorry to hear that the member's payment was not processed as he requested; obviously an error on our part. Of course the credit card charge could also have been made in smaller monthly payments but processing through us he could have avoided interest charges. Had we been made aware at the time, we could have refunded his card and processed it the manner he intended. Superior customer service from our administrative staff is a mandatory partner to our service in the field. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

It went great, they showed up on time and did they work they said they were going to do. They have come back for our second service already without us calling to schedule it, which was nice that they are on top of our schedule.
Description of Work: We called A-1 because our daughter recommend the company and because they were highly rated on Angie's list. We were in the process of refinancing our home and needed a termite and moisture letter for the mortgage company. They were able to get us worked into their schedule within the week. Once the came out we decided to sign up for a yearly service with the company and they honored a coupon they were offering for Anglie's list customers.

A1 showed up when scheduled and did a thorough inspection of the house and has conducted one recheck since. They always show up when scheduled, are very polite and professional and seem very willing to answer questions and provide the best service at a very reasonable cost.

A-1 technician showed up 10 minutes early for the appointment. He was sitting in his car, so that he would not disturb us earlier than he was scheduled. Although I appreciated this, I was wanting the ants gone more. Once we talked about the issues that we were seeing, the technician went about his business. He let me walk along with him and talked about what he was seeing, and more importantly, what he was going to do about it. He was very courteous and professional, and clean. Their product worked, within a couple of hours I noticed a difference in the ant population inside the house, and within a couple of days, they were gone. Once thier product got back to the nest, they were gone. I will definitely be using A-1 again.
Description of Work: We were having a really bad time with the ants during the heat of the summer. They were all over the place, inside and out. We came across an Angie's List special and decided to call. We had an inside and outside ant treatment.

Called company to make appt to come out for estimate. Received estimate and called to confirmed date for treatment. I had not gotten an estimate from another company, and I was in need right away to get this done. I was in the process of removing old siding and replacing it with new siding. While siding was take off, contractor noticed some termites and I called A-1 back out for that inspection and treatment.
Description of Work: This price is for full termite treatment 893.00 and misc/repair service of 193.00, and termite annual inspection 135.00.

They were very, very good. We felt they were very helpful in providing necessary services and not trying to up-sell us. They geared it towards what we really needed and didn't try to take advantage of the situation and get an exorbitant amount of money. They guided us in a fair way for the services we did need.

I selected this company because of their great reviews. When I called them they were courteous and prompt. They came out and sprayed for fleas and were exactly on time. So, originally I was very satisfied. But now, a month and a half after they originally came out, and about 3 weeks after they came out for the SECOND time. I still have fleas in the house. I understand the life cycle of these pests, and I knew that a second visit would be necessary to kill the unhatched larva. But there is no animal living here which tells me that the spray they used was either not effective or they did a poor job spraying the area. After I called they said "sure they would come out" but that I would have to pay them for a third time. Why would I pay 3 times for someone to perform the same job? At this point I realize they can not solve my pest problem.
Description of Work: Sprayed for Fleas inside the house to kill the pest and control the unhatched larva.

Response from A-1 Inc Exterminators
Naturally, we are very sorry to find that the member is so dissatisfied with the results of our service but I would offer that it is terribly important that he understands the problem with fleas in his home is often not remedied with just 2 visits, particularly when there is no pet in the home or one has been removed. As stated by the member, we provided two service visits where we applied an adulticide and insect growth regulator. It is recommended that there be 2 initial treatments approximately 10-14 days apart and then follow up on a monthly basis until the problem is under control. The member received the first service on October 5th and then requested the 2nd service which was done on October 23rd. On November 2nd, we sent him a thank you letter offering him regular service at $50.00 per month moving forward if he continued to have a problem. We heard nothing more from the member until December 10th when he called wanting additional service at no charge because he was seeing fleas again. Even at that point, we offered to allow him to pick up the monthly rate of $50.00, no contracts involved, and he could carry the service until his problem was eliminated and then simply stop. Obviously, he felt our service must have been lacking because he had a problem again and he was quite adamant that he should get more service for free. I feel we were quite clear about what may or may not be needed moving forward. We have no knowledge of how the member's home got a flea problem, whether he had just moved in and there was a pet there before? Whether he had a pet he no longer has? Whether he had a guest visiting that brought in a pet? Or even how long he had the problem before he began treatment. A flea infestation can be difficult to eliminate depending on many factors. I am certain that if he gets more service and has it done regularly for a while, he will be able to correct the problem. He appears to understand the nature of the problem and the need to address the infestation in all stages possible as he moves through a treatment process. We certainly understand that he may wish to use a different company and that's fine as long as he stays with it regularly until it is is eliminated. We wish him well.

They do an excellent job. I was very unhappy with my last company and they came out and put together a plan for our house that was reasonable. They come out on a quarterly basis and i also had them add the termite inspection and warranty. They are responsive, trustworthy and professional.

They were great. The online coupon did not apply to what I needed done but they still gave me a discount. They were really good. They sent me followups for re-checks as well and to remind me about the expiration. They were very professional and very nice and great customer service. The cost was reasonable as well. I will absolutely use them again.

I called this company after receiving a price quote from another company doing the same service. I quickly was impressed with how helpful the woman on the phone was, giving me a price, explaining the services, etc. She was friendly and informative. I found that for less money A-1 included a termite warranty with the same services otherwise. We had planned to use the first company so the woman scheduled someone to come out the same day so I didn't need to take more time off of work. The technician showed up that same day, on time, inspected for termites (new home so that went quickly) and spread a barrier around the exterior of the home. He then placed two mice control stations around the garage and sprayed the interior of the home. Using a 'green' product was a bonus (see their website for details).
Description of Work: Annual Pest Control System which includes four visits annually, unlimited in between pest control, and termite warranty.

Description of Work: A-1 sprayed for ants and termites inside and out of my single-family home in Norfolk, VA. I had forgotten that I had a purchased a coupon for $50 off the services through Angie's List and paid full price. The service department at A-1 discovered the error and contacted me to refund the overpayment. I would probably not have discovered the mistake, if not for A-1's integrity. That means a lot to me, more than the money.

He arrived on time. He was very thorough in the inspection. He also made suggestions, such as, the replacement of the plastic sheeting in the crawl space in the future due to its deterioration. I felt comfortable with his suggestions. He was respectful and knowledgeable. I have hired the company back to perform other pest control (I have ants). Since my ant problem was really bad in the summer they provided an additional treatment (at no cost to me) in between the quarterly treatment. I'm very satisfied with the company. And I continue to use them as my pest control guy.

Chris, did exactly what he said he would do. He was prompt, professional, and honest. Heather, the office manager, was professional and so personable. I enjoyed talking with her. Chris and Heather are great ambassadors for A-1 Inc, Exterminators!!!!!!!
Description of Work: I contacted A-1 Inc. Exterminators to perform a routine termite inspection. I was shocked to find out that I had active termites. Chris, the service technician, showed me the termite colonies in my garage. He gave me a job cost and recommended that I get other quotes. Chris also explained the different methods of payment available to me. I decided to have A-1 perform the work. I contacted his office to finalize payment and scheduled for Chris to come back 2 days later. Before leaving, Chris, explained exactly what he would do. The procedure involved drilling holes in my garage and on my porch and sealing them after the product was applied. My foundation would be trenched around and under. He informed me that the process would take approximately 7 to 8 hours. I only needed to make the garage accessible. Chris started at 9:15am and finished at 4:32pm on the appointed date. He let me know when he was going to lunch and when he would return. After the job was completed, Chris get me a walk around my property and pointed out everything he did. He said he would return in 3 months for a follow-up and to make sure there was no sign of any active termites.

I called A-1 Exterminating and asked if they would schedule directly with my tenant. They were able to go out within a day or two and treated for roaches. I haven't received any further reports of roaches, so I am satisfied with the work they did and felt that the price paid was reasonable.

Showed up on time - the rep said the person assigned was ill and he was covering for him. He promptly completed the inspection and wrote up the sales ticket. He was VERY pleasant and knowledgeable! He answered basic questions and explained A-1's year warranty on pest inspections and answered all my questions. He went over what he inspected in detail and explained all the findings (there were no issues with either pests or water - yippee!) The report was forwarded to the mortgage lender, and I received a copy. It was concise and thorough, and I would recommend this company to others and plan to have them inspect next year!

Everything went well. I was impressed with Heather; she was very professional and patient on the phone. They were pretty booked, but she fit me in within a day of calling, because I told her we needed it done quick. They also gave us a window and a 30 minute courteousy call before they came. Also, my real estate couldn't be there right away, so he worked on the outside first, then went inside. It turned out very good.
Description of Work: They completed a termite and moisture inspection on our new home. They checked the crawlspace and checked the house fully. They met with our real estate agent because in order for the house to close and for us to be able to move in, we were required to get an inspection.
