My mother-in-law recommended Mac Carr, since she and her husband had such a good experience with him, and I could only agree after the inspection! As first-time home buyers, my husband and I were full of questions, and Mac was full of answers, as well as tips on everything from how to fix the loose toilet bowl to how to install our own insulation. He had local store names, product names & types, and detailed suggestions. When we joked that my handwritten notes probably wouldn't be enough, he was adamant about being okay with us calling him up out of the blue to get him to explain anything. Not only was he great, but the guy at US Inspect that I set up the appointment with was also prompt and accurate with his quote, and was very easy to work with. All around an amazing experience for us.
Description of Work: Inspected the house we were interested in buying from top to bottom, gave us very good tips on how to do our own repairs/enhancements, wrote & printed report right there on site for us and our Realtor

Our realtor highly recommended we use U.S. Inspect because they do excellent work. We had a home inspection as well as a termite inspection prior to settling on our new home. We thought both inspections were fine, however, I recently discovered that we indeed have termites along the side of the home. I recall that the inspector spent the majority of his time going through the interior of the home. I cannot say that he spent enough time carefully inspecting the exterior as well. My mistake was to just accept my realtor's referral as golden. Always do your homework and check other customers' experiences.

This company certified that the home that I was considering for purchase was termite free. In fact, several months later I found out the home was actually completely infestested with termites. There were beams and locations clearly marked where damage was evident. The home inspector said that our heating system was 12 yrs old. In reality, the heating system is over 25 yrs. old. This may mean that I may have to spend thousands of dollars to upgrade much sooner than I anticipated. The person that performed the home inspection was a certified home inspector, but he obviouslly did not know how to inpsect major systems in a home.

Care was taken to protect the property as the process moved from the outside areas to the inside and attic space. The inspector was receptive to specific questions concerning both the process and areas of concern identified in the inspection. An oral summary of the findings was provided at the end of the job along with a detailed report within hours.
Description of Work: Needed a prepurchase home inspection on townhouse unit. The inspector arrived at the property ahead of schedule. After explaining the inspection the process was actually started. The outside structure, deck, doors, windows and footings were checked. On the inside windows, doors, wiring, plumbing and appliances were checked for both appearance and function. The roof and attic areas were inspected for leaks and integrity. Problems found were identified and explained as the inspection progressed.

I was very pleased with the inspector that handled my job. He was very knowledgeable. As we walked around the outside of the house for the first half of the inspection, he explained some of his preliminary findings to me and how they could affect the home's condition. He also explained what kind of repairs would need to be done to keep it in good shape. The second half of the inspection was spent inside the house and under the crawlspace. I didn't go under the house this time around. Again, the inspector appeared to do a thorough job of investigating the major systems and appliances in the house. But I did end up hiring the same inspector from US Inspect for the final walk-through to verify that my list of repairs had been completed. He even went in the crawlspace, coveralls and all! I paid $150 for the re-inspection, which was well worth it.
Description of Work: My Realtor highly recommended that I use U.S. Inspect for my new home inspection. The entire inspection took about two hours to complete.

Everything went well. Jim Sipe did an amazing job and we were very impressed with his service. He was friendly and very knowledgeable. He walked us through the entire inspection, he took time after each section to explain what issues he found, and he put together a very complete report. I feel confident that I know any of the issues with my new house and am certain that I got a great deal. I was also impressed with how quickly he got the report to us, it was emailed to me the same day that the inspection was done.

We thought that we got a thorough inspection, only to buy the house and discover a big problem that the inspector missed. When we called US Inspect to discuss the problem, they became immediately defensive, and started shuttling us through an unwieldy bureaucracy. They offered no help. So much for their errors and omissions insurance! Had we known about the expensive fixes wed have to undertake to make our homes foundation safe, we would not have bought the house. Using US Inspect has proven to be an expensive mistake. Avoid this company - they are more interested in referrals from Realtors than telling the home-buyer about issues.

Kipp Crone was not, in my opinion, very thorough. Over the course of the first two weeks following my move in date, I discovered the following: three "dead" outlets; two windows with latches broken in a way that prohibit them from opening and I am told require the purchase of new windows; lights on one ceiling fan blow when the fan is turned on; two of the three spotlights on the house do not work; and two doors in the house will not fully close.

The inspector showed up on time and performed a thorough inspection. He took the time to explain what he was doing, and we learned a lot about our new home and what repairs it needed. He checked the whole house and the yard, including the driveway, front retaining wall, attic, roof, etc. He answered all our questions and gave us a lot of good tips on home maintenance. He wrote up a thorough report that he gave us the same day, along with photos. This will be very helpful as we hire contractors to work on the house. I would recommend hiring him, especially for first-time home buyers; we learned a lot from him and he was pleasant to deal with.

No liner in the chimney. The furnace man tells me this is also an easy thing to spot, as the liner has a distinctive cap. The inspector noted there was no cap on the chimney, but did not note there was no liner. In addition, the inspector knew the dishwasher was not running correctly and the main valve was frozen, but he refused to note those in his report. I dread what tomorrow brings, as we seem to find something new that he missed with regularity. To his credit, he did find lots of problems, mostly small, and nothing he missed is catastrophic (at least so far), like the house about to fall down. Still, it is dollars that add up and I have no confidence in this company now.
Description of Work: House, termite inspection; radon testing. So far, we have lived in the house almost 3 weeks and found the following that the inspector missed the upstairs bathroom sink and washing machine draining to the sump pump. The inspector apparently didn't wonder why there were four pipes into the sump pump and we only knew where 2 came from. This little problem resulted in a plumber tearing out part of a wall and re-routing pipes. Split on flat roof. Because he did not go on the roof, or even take a ladder and LOOK on the low flat porch roof, he did not see this. It was good weather, with no snow on the roof. This problem was apparent the minute we put a ladder up there to clean the gutter. The roof man tells us the roof was also put on poorly, over at least one other layer of something. The split on the roof resulted in some leakage into the wooden porch roof, which the inspector also missed.

SEVERAL ATTEMPTS WERE MADE TO CONTACT THE MEMBER ABOUT THIS INSPECTION AND HER COMPLAINTS. WE WERE NOT CONTACTED ABOUT ISSUES WITH THE INSPECTION FROM EITHER THE MEMBER OR ANGIE'S LIST; IT IS APPARENT AFTER REVIEWING THE INSPECTION REPORT THAT THE MEMBER DID NOT READ THEIR INSPECTION REPORT AND OR LIKELY DID NOT ACT OR RESPOND ON HIS RECOMMENDATIONS UNTIL LATER ON AFTER MOVING INTO THE HOME. THE INSPECTION WAS PERFORMED ON FEBRUARY 15, 2006 AND A RESPONSE WAS POSTED ON APRIL 12, 2006. OUR INSPECTOR NOTED DEFECTS WITH THE FLUE AND CHIMNEY THAT REQUIRED REPAIRS (PHOTOS AVAILABLE), HE ALSO NOTED THE COMPONENTS DRAINING INTO THE SUMP PIT (WITH PHOTOS OF THE PIPES DISCHARGING INTO THE SUMP PIT). ALSO THE MAIN ROOF COVERING WAS NOT WALKED DUE TO THE STEEP PITCH 10/12 PITCH AND THE FLAT ROOF WAS EVALUATED USING A LADDER AT THE EAVES. WE REGRET ANY UNHAPPINESS IN THE PART OF THE MEMBER, IF WE HAD BEEN GIVEN AN OPPORTUNITY TO DISCUSS THEIR FINDINGS AND URGE THEM ON THE IMPORTANCE OF REACTING TO THE INSPECTORS RECOMMENDATIONS SOONER RATHER THAN LATER MANY OF THEIR CONCERNS COULD HAVE BEEN HELPED.

When we arrived, Jim was already there and talked about what he would be inspecting. He encouraged me to accompany him on his inspection and to ask questions. After each system was inspected, he would enter the data into the report on his laptop. He printed the report before we left and sent an electronic to us that night. He was very thorough and knowledgeable, and we would use him again.
Description of Work: Jim Sipe did a home inspection for a new home we were buying. He also did a radon inspection. The home inspection was $385 and the radon inspection was an extra $100.

OUTSTANDING. I CALLED THEIR CALL CENTER ON MONDAY AND THEY SCHEDULED AN INSPECTOR, SET UP THE APPT W/ THE SELLER'S REALTOR, AND MADE SURE EVERYTHING WAS IN ORDER FOR THURSDAY THE SAME WEEK. ON WEDNESDAY NIGHT I RECEIVED A COURTESY CALL TO REMIND OF THE APPOINTMENT TOO. DENNIE WAS VERY PROFESSIONAL, KNOWLEDGEABLE AND THOROUGH. HE LEFT NO STONE UNTURNED (THE ENTIRE INSPECTION TOOK ABOUT 5 HOURS). HE ALSO TOOK THE TIME TO ANSWER ALL MY QUESTIONS AND PUT THEM INTO TERMS I COULD UNDERSTAND. THE REALLY NICE PART WAS THAT HE CREATED THE INSPECTION FORM ON SITE WITH HIS LAPTOP AND PRINTED IT OUT FOR ME (HE'S ALSO GOING TO SEND ME A PDF VERSION TO MY EMAIL). AFTER ALL WAS SAID AND DONE HE FOUND A BROOM AND SWEPT THE KITCHEN SINCE WE TRACKED IN SOME GRASS CLIPPINGS (IT WAS RAINING WHILE WE WERE IN THE YARD). ALL IN ALL A VERY GOOD EXPERIENCE.
