Heating and Air Conditioning, Water Heaters, Air Duct Cleaning,

About us

Founded in 1969 by Dick & Nancy Krider, Howell’s Heating & Air's mission has always been simple– hire good people and perform good work and the business will come. Over 40 years and a generation later, Howell’s remains true to this original philosophy and attributes its success and reputation to their great owners, for their hard work every single day. Howell’s requires all technicians to be NATE-certified. In order to become certified, technicians must pass a nationally recognized test to demonstrate their knowledge of today’s increasingly sophisticated heating and cooling systems. This certification benefits local homeowners by giving them an independent standard by which to select a knowledgeable technician to work on their home comfort system. Technicians who are NATE-certified know that NATE stands for excellence and quality service. Besides being highly qualified experts, our technicians will treat your home like it's their own. Floors and other surfaces will be protected and left clean and free of debris after the work is complete. Our Uncompromising Guidelines Maintained since 1969 Never consider a job well done, until both you and your customer are completely satisfied. Use only quality materials, tools and workmanship. Shortcuts lead to shortcomings and trouble for everyone. Think Safety—for the benefit of you and those around you. Be as courteous and neat as possible. Take pride in workmanship and treat every home and business with regard for cleanliness and safety. Always perform a complete clean up after each job, leaving the site as it was found.

They showed up on time and they got the air conditioner fixed and it has continued to work fine. I went down in the crawlspace about 2 months later and I found that they had taken the filter out and failed to replace it after fixing my unit. This could have caused an issue and more of an expense so I am glad that I found it.
Description of Work: I hired them to come out and fix my air conditioning system. They ended up having to replace a few parts to do so.

My opinion is that the angle of the roof did not allow EASY installation of the condensate lines and therefore, the job was done but, not done to the point that we, as clients, would have the optimum advantage of not having to deal with separated pipes after only 27 months. I understand the difficulty but, as contractors, you are dealing with HOMES and people's lives. You HAVE to go the extra distance to get the job done correctly. They blame my siding company. My siding company was actually an environmental consulting and construction firm, EnviroGroup. They employed master carpenters for our siding job, not the typical " nail gunner" one might see building 5 houses a day in giant pre-planned communities. Pennsylvania National Insurance Company never fully investigated that job and assumed things that are not true. Their own adjuster commented on the fine details of the siding/painting. I heard him say " Oh, wow, look how they back painted. Man, they did a great job, you don't see this kind of job every day." My contractors were never in the attic, never worked in the soffit area and only touched the cover gutter for the condensate lines in order to paint it. I can't imagine a paint brush would tear apart properly installed PVC pipes...and so, we are back to the original argument - Howells did an improper installation and did not own up to it.
Description of Work: In May 2008, we installed two 13 seer heat pumps and an air retrieval system to replace old heat pumps. The sales rep,Matt Ferreira was informative, prompt and easy to work with..understandably, since we were spending $13,000.00 +. The work took 3 days and everything went well. Regular maintenance continued. On Aug. 9,2011, we see water dripping from soffit. The only pipes up there are condensate lines from the heat pump so I called Howells. They send a guy out who cannot properly access the lines by himself ( it is a tight angle in the roof ) but, he crossed some lines and got the drip to stop. 2 days later they come back to repair the lines, cut into the soffit to access and, that's when we realized the soffit was as rotten as can be, obviously from this drip.. what else could it be? So, Howells balks at paying for the soffit damage, which is minimal, $300-$400, I'm thinking, claiming that a siding and paint job 10 months before caused this problem. I said the damage would have manifested before now if that was the case. A conversation about building codes on PVC pipe primer and glue ensued but when I asked Howell's damage control guy, Chris Meadows, what the code was, he replied, " I don't know." HUH? - why were we having the long conversation about codes? I call Hanover Co. building inspector's office, relay story and they say that Howells knows proper procedure and that PVC pipe should be primed and glued.I said Howells claims that these pipes come apart all the time, inspector says only when improper work has been done. This was reiterated by Lorenzo Dyer at the state building code office ( DPOR - DHCD ). I zeroed in on the code which was not in place in May 2008. Mr. Dyer said " It doesn't matter about the primer/glue code from 2009 because the 2006 code encompasses how to properly install PVC pipes." He said they did not install the lines correctly, that these pipes DO NOT come apart easily as Howells suggested. He said if that was the case, there would be leaking condensate pipes all over the state, rotting soffits and houses. He declared that Howells did not install our line properly. So, Howells files a claim w/their insurance co., Penn. National; adjuster comes out, surveys, and says, " I'm stumped. Why would they involve us over such a small claim?..especially after you spent so much money w/them. I would have just fixed it." I agreed. However, we were still turned down for a $346.38 claim. This is the 3rd contractor in 5 yrs. that has come into our home, taken our money and later, would not stand by their work. We never sued before, never filed DPOR complaints. That will not be the case this time. I'm done with sub-par Virginia contractors.

Response from Howell's Heating & Air
The member contacted the Howell's office on 8/15/11 to discuss the water damage to her soffit, based on information from her "environmental siding guy" who had just replaced her siding 10 months earlier. She was convinced that the condensate pipe installed by us in 2008 was not installed properly. Our install supervisor talked with the member on 8/15/11 and scheduled appointment for the following morning at 9:00am to inspect the drain line repair work and the soffit damage. He arrived at 8:55am, knocked on the door, rang the doorbell, and called the house from his cell phone, but the member would not respond to our arrival. After 20 minutes of waiting, our install supervisor left. To date, she has not returned the phone message and has not permitted Howell's access. The insurance adjustor investigated and estimated the damage at $346.00 and concluded that the drain line could have been damaged when the siding was replaced. He stated, "In fact, in order to complete these other operations, the drain line could have been disconnected and then reinstalled by another contractor." The insurance adjustor was involved only because Howell's was not permitted access. The glue used in 2008 was approved for use on PVC drain pipe. The comments regarding Howell's and what we "claimed" and to slander our employees, especially Chris Meadows (who has over 22 years of experience) does not warrant comment. Howell's has not been granted access to double check the srain line repair; we certainly have not balked at the repair estimate and we have not blamed anyone else. I think it's safe to say that no one knows for sure how or why the pipe came apart. To the extent that we have been permitted to stand behind our work, we have, in a prompt and professional manner. We have forwarded a check that should more than cover the estimated repairs. We empathize with the members; it is unfortunate that their experiences with contractors over the last 5 years have not all been positive. For over 42 years, Howell's has gone to great lengths to insure that all interactions that we are fortunate enough to have with our customers are positive.

Needed to improve the airflow to various parts of our home. Howell's tech, Dennis, could not have been better. He quickly diagnosed the problems and affected repairs quickly. All of this done with a smile and an easy way about him that made us know we had made the right choice and that he was a seasoned pro. He never tried to "sell" us but was more like a technical consultant. Nice guy, excellent service and good company. Now that our system is 20 years old, when we consider replacement later this fall Howell's will be the first on our list to contact.
Description of Work: Adjusted dampers and flex duct to improve airflow to both upstairs and downstairs AC systems. Reinstalled air filter left in shambles by previous contractor.

The crew showed up when I was told they would and got right to work. They were friendly and worked efficiently. I don't think they even stopped for lunch. The job was completed within 7 hours and they cleaned up behind themselves. If all service people were like this crew from Howell's there would be a world of happy customers.

Howell's Heating and Air Conditioning has provided semi-annual maintenance on my heat pump system for the past 25 years. They always arrive on time or call to let me know if they need to change the time. They installed a new system about 7 years ago. I have always found them to be very responsive, professional and to provide quality service.

Our air conditioner broke down and stopped working late at night during a long, hot, and humid heat wave. My husband called Howell's Heating and Air and left a message. By 7:30 the next morning he heard from the secretary and they were able to send someone to our house by 9:45am. Two service technicians came, were very polite and professional, stopped at the front door and put fabric protective coverings on their feet before coming in. First they listened to me describe the problem, then they went outside to inspect the unit. They found the problem quickly and showed it to me. I called my husband at work and they talked to him and answered his questions. Because the capacitor is a common problem, they had a new one in the truck. They took out the old one which had gone bad and put in the new one very quickly. Then one of the techs came in (carefully putting on his foot gear first) and reset my thermostat for me. He said the coils on the unit were covered with mud, so he went out and cleaned them. The house began to cool off immediately, they finished up and cleaned up all their mess, and by about 11am everything was done and my house was cool again. We are delighted with the work and more than happy that they were able to come so quickly when there must be lots and lots of air conditioners breaking down. We called them because of the high ratings given to the company by Angie's List customers. Now, we are among the very satisfied customers.
Description of Work: The air conditioner was inspected and it was determined that the capacitor was bad. It was removed and replaced by a new one.

Dealing with Howell's was a very pleasant experience. We had taken a few estimates from other companies, but we held dealt with Howell's years ago before we moved out of town and felt they gave good service. The price was right and we did all the contract signing on line. They were prompt on the day of installation and the two gentlemen were very professional and very quick. It was done in four hours and that was even with a trip back to their office for duct material. We are very pleased with them and highly recommended their services.

I got four quotes to replace an aging 10-year old heat pump that would not consistently come on, except for when I had an HVAC technician on site. Howell?s was the last place I had quote, but they also had the best deal. From the other 3 places, I was getting quotes for 2.5 to 3 ton units ranging from $6,800 for a 2.5 ton 13 SEER to $12.5k for a 3 ton 19 SEER. All of those sounded way out of line and a couple of them wanted an additional $2k more to move the unit 5 feet to the side on top of that. Things could not have been better with Howell?s. Everyone from the estimator to the installers were here when they said they would - though the installers were about 20 minutes early, but who can blame them for wanting to get a jump on the work when it?s going to be 120 degrees in the attic later in the day. The new unit was operational and blowing cold air by 2:45pm. Wow. They replaced a significant amount of flex-ducting as well since it was not large enough to deal with the airflow of the new unit. BTW, I ended up with a 3 ton York Affinity system - 18 SEER with variable speed air handler, multi-stage compressor, touchpad thermostat, and a 5? filter unit - ~$6,400 before the $1,500 tax credit. Howell?s throws in a year of maintenance visits (2 visits) and a 5-year labor warranty for that price. They also moved my unit over 5 feet, per my request, for that same price. I learned about Howell?s here on Angie?s from the reviews and after I told some friends I had selected them for my system, I found out they also used Howell?s and were happy.

Howell's was quick to send an estimator (Matt) when we called. Our original plan was to replace an aging wall unit in the living/dining/kitchen area of our tri-level home with a ductless system, but we also asked for an estimate to replace our aging air condition system with a heat pump and run duct work to living/dining/kitchen and the lower level family room. We decided to go with the bigger job to add value to our home. Howell's was flexible on the start date (we had to go on vacation) and the two installers were prompt each day, were courteous, worked hard in the heat of late summer, and did a great job cleaning up. They took the time to teach me how to use the new thermostat. We love our new system and look forward to saving money on heating this winter.

They were here providing routine service for our 1 yr old heat pump, which we purchased from them, and noticed our hot water heater had a slow leak. They offered to give us an estimate for replacing the old hot water heater. They faxed us an estimate and information on the new hot water heater in a few days. Once we contacted them, since there was no rush, we scheduled them to come out in about a week, which worked best for our schedule. Several days after the installation, we noted a decrease in our water flow rate. We contacted Howells and they promptly came out and made an adjustment on the hot water heater. We have had no further problems.

The first step was to get a price quote and a recommended replacement for our aging unit. The vendor offered a range of products that could meet our needs at different price points. We went for the middle-tier unit and no one was pushy. We then scheduled an install day. The install went smoothly and took half or more of the day. A 2-man crew completed the work and arrived early in the morning as requested to get started. Not only did they replace the main components as expected but there were some nice touches in that they placed the new unit on a nice new solid base and also replaced the indoor thermostat with a programmable one. The new unit has been heating and cooling our home so much more consistently than the old one ever could. No problems 2 years in (replaced July 2006).
Description of Work: The company replaced our 20+ year old heating/AC (Rheem) unit with a new one (York). I've also used the same vendor for annual maintenance for the old unit before we replaced it and for the new unit as well.

I have been using them for ten years and they are as good as they can be. They are Johnny on spot when I need them. I have a contract with them and I pay $130 per year. If they have to replace any parts, that is extra. I would say I probably spend anywhere from $25-50 dollars a year on parts. The serviceman is really great; they send out the same one every time. His name is Dennis. I would recommend them to anyone needing any type of heating or air conditioning work done.
