I called Richards to receive a quote to grind down a tree stump in my front yard. Fortunately, the stump was in my front yard, so they were able to visit without me being at home. They left a quote on the front door. The next day, I scheduled the removal. They called Miss Utility to verify it was ok to grind the stump. One day I arrived home from work and the stump was gone. Just a small, neat pile of dirt and wood chips. Great company, service, and communication.

Recommended by an acquaintance that was their former fleet mechanic. He made the call for me after a neighbor's tree fell on my house and I had obtained immediate approval from insurance for removal. A strong storm had passed through area that day creating a lot of tree damage through the area. So, I was amazed that a crew showed up within an hour and removed this massive (approx 100 year old oak) off of my house. It was still raining as they worked and that didn't seem to slow them down. They were able to clear trunk off of the roof and side walls before sunset and enabled access into the house to remove pets and mitigate interior water damage. They obtained tarps and covered the holes in the roof to the best of their ability to mitigate water damage. Tree was so large that it required additional pick-up of debris the following day. Quick, courteous, respectful and highly skilled at their profession.
Description of Work: Richard's Tree Service removed a massive oak tree that had fallen from my neighbor's property and literally was covering my house. Roof and brick and block exterior wall damage, as well as penetration to interior of house. Front of house covered and door blocked by branches. Insurance approval obtained within an hour of discovery; which enabled mitigation work to commence immediately. No - did not shop around or obtain estimates. Yes, I was aware that a tenant of the neighboring property said that owner had previous estimate of over $3k to cut down tree when it was still standing. Depending on circumstances, one must make their own determination as to urgency of situation and extent of damage to property, as well as supply and demand following a storm. Obtaining a licensed, insured and a skilled professional post storm is difficult and costly. If you can wait, shop around and make tree service contractor aware that estimate can be made for immediate project or for future project given a set time. This service was based on strong recommendation by a mutual acquaintance. Otherwise, make certain that any tree contractor provides you valid copies of their contractors license and insurance when obtaining estimate. If tree removal is not covered by insurance ask for alternatives such as wood chips left on premise (use as mulch or soil amendment). Difference in pricing if wood is left on property. Note: A dumpster cost approx $500 in Fairfax County.

We scheduled an estimate and explained to Troy, the estimator, that we were in the process of buying a house and needed to plan an estimate time that worked for the seller, seller's agent, buyer, buyer's agent and home inspector to all be there at the same time. Troy said no problem and set up an estimate and assured us that he would be there. The only problem? Troy never showed and never answered his phone. About 10 people stood around waiting for him for over an hour and we finally gave up. We lost thousands of $$ because we only had one opportunity to get the seller to pay for tree work and we had no estimate. The best part? At the end of the day (4pm when the estimate was scheduled for 10am), Troy calls us and casually says, "I forgot to look at my schedule, woops, want me to come by now?" He didn't even apologize or seem perturbed that he missed the appointment.

I wasn't home when Richards made the estimate so they left it in the mailbox. I had to go out of town during the first time I scheduled to have the trees removed. My wife didn't like the idea of being home alone when RIchard's showed up so we rescheduled without any issues. They showed on the new date. I verified the trees to remove. When I returned home that afternoon, the trees and the crew were gone. The yard was clean.
Description of Work: We had a large (over 80ft) tree removed along with another smaller (25ft) tree. The large tree was rotting and the smaller one was growing in the wrong place. I didn't want the stumps removed.

They were one of six companies I had come out and give an estimate. They were higher in cost than most, but they went to great extent in advertising the amount of insurance they carried. Two days after they gave the estimate, they followed up to ask if they'd be getting the job. No one else did. I explained that they were $150 more than most everyone, so they lowered the price by that amount. They were supposed to show up on a Thurs, and when I got off work early, I learned they'd canceled without letting me know. We were able to reschedule quickly, and they knocked off $60 when they showed up. Good crew, worked fast, and didn't leave a mess.
Description of Work: Took down three poplar trees, cut the main portions into usable fireplace length, and ground the stumps. Removed a broken branch from up high in a maple tree without damaging the rest of the tree. Hauled away all debris, except for the firewood-length portions.

The guys from Richard's were fantastic. They had to re-schedule to Saturday because of rain earlier in the week. Arrived early on Saturday morning and after going over the job with us went right to work. They were fast and professional and performed all the services they said they would. Even pointed out a problem with a tree from the swim club property that had some problems and wrote that down on the invoice. I would most certainly use them again and highly recommend this company to anyone who needs tree service on their property.

These guys were a total breeze to work with. After Superstorm Sandy, we had a tree fall on our home and could not have insurance assessors come out to quote our damages without the tree being removed. Less than 48 hours after the storm, these guys had taken a crane and removed the tree from our home and hauled away 80% of the wood. Within a week, they had returned to grind the stump of the fallen tree and taken the rest of the wood from our property. The entire team was professional throughout the process and worked so quickly and efficiently. Considering the amount of work they must have had following the storm, they did an amazing job of making sure we felt like we were a priority. I would highly recommend them!

We had a long wait (about 5 1/2 weeks) to get the work done, but other than that, we had a very satisfactory experience.
Description of Work: We had a number of large tree limbs hanging in the tops of several trees after the derecho last summer. In August we got estimates from several companies and chose Richard's Tree Service. The price was not the lowest we received, but the work done for the amount paid was good. In addition to taking down the limbs in six trees, the trees were properly trimmed at the break points to minimize damage and encourage tree health. Also, a nuisance bush was removed. All debris was removed.

I was concerned that this large oak tree would lose limbs and damage the house during a storm. Their arborist explained that the tree was very healthy and the canopy didn't need thinning, so the risk was minimal. I appreciated their integrity when they could have gotten me to take on an expensive removal.

We contacted Richard's Tree Service via the Angie's List message service. They returned our contact within a couple of hours and sent someone out to do an estimate less than two days later. We got two other estimates for our work in the ensuing weeks and decided to go with the other company. Overall, they were great folks and I would not hesitate to contact them again.
Description of Work: We contacted Richard's Tree Service to get an estimate on removing a very large tree from our yard, as well as trimming/pruning two other very large trees. They returned our contact promptly and were polite, professional, and efficient. They came out and did an estimate for us very quickly. We decided to use another company, however, because the other company's estimate was about $1000 less than Richard's-even though BOTH had equal amounts of insurance and the appropriate licensing. We have only positive things to say about the service Richard's Tree Service folks provided to us. We just did not want to spend the extra money if we didn't have to!

A limb fell off of a maple in our front yard during the September 2011 hurricane, so come winter we decided to have the tree trimmed to get rid of any dead wood and prevent this from happening again. We got a few estimates and Richard's was the least expensive, so we decided to go with this company. The Richard's arborist indicated the company would rid the tree of any problematic limbs. Recently during a storm another huge limb fell off the same tree - and looking at the fallen piece, it is clear that the limb had a cavity. Now we need to pay to have another limb removed and the tree looked at AGAIN, when I feel that the service we had performed this past winter by Richard's should have caught and prevented any such problems. The arborist we had out to look at the tree post damage #2 said tRichard's should have caught and removed this limb given the cavity. The use of Richard's was a waste of our money since the same problem occurred again and now we have to go through the same exercise a second time.

Response from Richard's Tree Service
We are sorry that the Member lost a limb off the Maple tree during this last storm, but as most arborists know, maple trees are notoious for cavities. If we remove every limb that has a cavity we would have to remove the whole tree. This last storm tore down thousands of healthy limbs as well as whole trees and we certainly cannot blame the deadwooding completed in February 2012 would insure any damage to the tree during such a horrific storm that took place in June.

I hired Richard's based on a recommendation from a well-regarded local plant nursery. An arborist came out the day before to inspect the property; he provided a prioritzed list of work to be done and an estimate of costs. Even though the company is very busy right now due to recent storms, he worked my job into the schedule.I was nervous about the Japanese maple being pruned correctly since this tree is the centerpiece of my front yard, but I think that after the pruning it looks better than ever. Great care was taken with the tree, and the gentleman pruning it had an artistic eye as to keeping a balanced shape to it.Richard's has a stump grinding machine which is made for residential yards and getting into tight spaces. My grass wasn't compacted by heavy equipment being driven over it, and you can't tell that the stump was ever there.I would not hesitate to use Richard's Tree Service in the future and know that I will be calling them back in the spring.

Derecho storm on Friday night, I called on Sunday and guy was out for estimate two hours after call. He said work could start next day but it didn't start until Thursday. I don't hold that against them. I needed a crane and they rent the cranes I think - the crane I needed was having some issues. It's all good because I had holes in my roof that they were going to tarp after the tree was gone. But it was due to rain on Wednesday night. They came out and tarped while tree was still on roof even though it was a little dangerous! They did the critical work first - remove tree from house and cut down rest of damaged trees. They took away what ever debris they could that day. It did rain Wednesday night and I had leaking after they tarped. They had missed a very small hole that was hidden under the shingles. (hole was there but you could just barely see a hint of sunlight coming in through ceiling). I spoke to Richard - (who is the owner and was on-site the entire time and worked his butt off) and he called his guy out to take a second look. He was almost 30 minutes away and he came back and covered hole. (there were smaller holes that were covered individual pieces of plastic, not tarp). Richard told me just the critical work today and then they would organize going through and clean up all the debris from all homes they worked on. That was fine with me, it sounded organized and efficient. The following week I planned on calling to find out where I would be in that schedule. I didn't want to call on Monday because I thought that would be nagging. I completely forgot to call on Tuesday and Wednesday. When I got home from work on Wednesday they were on-site and almost done. And Richard was there too! They worked really hard and feel they went above and beyond what I expected. The customer service was A-1! I'm pretty sure they trimmed some other limbs that was hanging over my power lines (on my property). Maybe not but it seems as if they did, it was definitely needed. Uber professional and will definitely use them again. I have a few more trees in need of damage control and some that need general maintenance. I am very happy with services provided, worth every penny. Beside the holes in my roof, there's no evidence of two fallen 50+ year old trees.

I obtained 5 estimates for the removal of three trees from my back yard. Troy from Richard's Tree service came out on time and supplied a written estimate for the removal. He also provided me with proof of insurance and informed me that all of the workers were full time employees of the company, as opposed to using day labor, and that they are covered under workers compensation so that I cannot be sued by the workers in case of an accident. This company was the second least expensive of the five with the most expensive estimate being $1,500.00 and the least being $850.00. They arrived on time and performed the work without any damage to my neighbor's fence, which was immediately under two of the trees. These trees had to be removed without the aid of an elevated platform truck so they had to climb and cut. They also trimmed a couple of small branches from two other trees at no additional cost. The work was done on a very hot day but they worked through without a break. They were courteous and professional and cleaned up the area after all debris had been removed. I would definitely recommend this company.

I had storm damage (limbs from neighbors trees) that had damaged my house. The debris had to be removed before anyone could see the damage to the house. I called Richards Tree Service on Tuesday evening, left a message, they called me back the next day, which was July 4, they sent an estimator over, I approved the work to be done for the price they quoted, they had a crew at my house by mid-afternoon and they had cleaned up the debris alll over the yard in about an hour and a half that same day. They also put up tarps over my damaged roof so any subsequent rain would not do more damage. The workmen were polite and professional and went above and beyond to clean up the mess from the trees. I would recommend this company to anyone and I will use them again if needed.

Set up appointment with arborist/estimator. Troy arrived as scheduled and we walked around and discussed each tree. He was good at explaining what needed to be done. After agreement, he took aproximately 20-30 minutes to walk around and inspect each tree and write up the estimate. We then went over the estimate together agreeing on the cost. The next working day, the office called to set up a date for service. We were not present when the work was going on but it was evident that all work was completed and the debris was hauled away, Great service. We recommend and would use them again.

We were concerned about a Bradford Pear and wanted that properly pruned. And, we had at least 8 other trees pruned including a rather large tree that needed to have several branches trimmed near the top. The entire job was completed in about 2 hours, the property was left neat and clean. James and his crew were very careful in doing the work. The would consult me before pruning to be sure they understood exactly what I wanted. We are extremely happy with the work and will be having them come back to do more work for us in the Fall.

It could not have gone better!
Description of Work: They came by immediately and gave me a detailed estimate and explanation for fixing what they described as an "extremely overgrown" plum tree in our front yard. We live in a town house and the tree was drooping onto our neighbor's house and all we got was shade all day. The tree is about 12 years old or so and got huge! Rock, the arborist, came to do the work exactly when he said he would and worked to make that tree beautiful. We had never pruned or shaped the tree so we were pleasantly surprised to see what a properly cared for plum tree should look like. When the work was completed a team of people came with a huge truck and chipper and cleaned up the yard better than we do! He recommended that we do this again in about 3 years. Also, I had forgotten to ask how much it would cost to prune back two bushes in the front of our house. He shaped them beautifully at no charge. I would recommend this tree service with absolutely no reservation.
