Richard's Tree Service came with a big cherry picker truck because these were very tall trees. They were very professional and got the work done quickly and efficiently. I was pleased that they came on time and that they cleaned up all of the mess.
Description of Work: They cut down 4 dead Virginia pine trees and took all of the debris away. I didn't have them ground the stumps.

They did a fabulous job. They had the utility company come a few days early, which was very nice. They had all of the equipment that they needed to get the job done in about an hour. It was a 40 year old tree, so it was a lot of hard work and they were able to take care of all of it. I was very pleased with the service.

They are a little expensive but it was well worth it since they came out and did everything in one day. They were very careful in removing the trees that were in between the houses and close to the power lines. I would say they are very reliable and professional.
Description of Work: Richard's Tree Service disposed of 3 maple trees, 14 scrubby looking Elms and they also grounded down a couple of old Maple stumps. The entire job took about a day to complete.

Richard's did great, on time, on price, cleaned up better than expected. I'll use them again.
Description of Work: Large limb came down from a tree, missed my house by inches and was hanging in the tree 6 feet from my house. Richard's took my call immediately that afternoon, the arborist came by the next AM first thing, called me quoted a price and when I returned home that night you would have never known the 20 foot long 2 foot diameter limb was there.

They did a great job on each tree and removed debris. Only complaint, an Angie's list member discount was applied but the cost was $1,600.00 which seemed for just a few trees.

Richards was one of 5 tree service estimates obtained for the same work. It was the most expensive (twice as much as the firm I actually hired). When I asked the sales person whether quote included Angie's member discount, he argued with me that there was no Angie's member discount.

WE DO NOT MAKE ANY APOLOGIZES FOR OUR PRICES. WE CARRY WORKMEN'S COMPENSATION AND LIABILITY INSURANCE AND HAVE A LARGE CREW. WE GAVE THE CUSTOMER 17% DISCOUNT WHICH WAS A PACKAGE DEAL BECAUSE OF THE AMOUNT OF WORK REQUESTED.

Unprofessional, no follow up, no completion. Disappointing!
Description of Work: I called this company and made an appointment for someone to come out for an estimate. They sent someone out the next day and he left the estimate in my mailbox. Unfortunately we did not communicate well over the phone and because I wasn't able to be home at the time of the estimate so I got an estimate for the wrong tree. I called the company back and asked to speak to the guy who had done the estimate and was told to leave a message for him. I never heard back from them. I called a second time, same thing. I guess they don't need or want new customers!

ON 06/26/07, AFTER READING THE COMMENTS ON ANGIE'S LIST WE DISCOVERED THAT THE ESTIMATOR FAILED TO FOLLOW-THROUGH AND RETURN THE CUSTOMERS CALL. WE IMMEDIATELY CALLED HER AND RESCHEDULED AN APPOINTMENT AND HAD THE ESTIMATOR WRITE A NEW ESTIMATE FOR THE WORK REQUESTED. WE APOLOGIZED FOR OUR OVERSIGHTS.

Very well, there was a lot of deferred maintenance and it was a big job. It took them a day. After I saw the results, I asked them to come back and do a little more thorough job on cleaning vegetation off the power lines which they did without complaining. It was a reasonable request and they were reasonable.
Description of Work: James and his crew came removed several stumps, trimmed trees, removed a tree and several bushes and cleared some power lines. I met them on the job site and added a few extra jobs at the last moment, which I paid for. They were fine with that.

Description of Work: I called Richard's Tree Service to give me an estimate for removing a large Ash tree that had been struck by lightning last summer (it didn't leaf out this spring). The person who helped me on the phone was polite. The estimator showed up on the date scheduled and left the estimate where we had agreed upon. The estimate was free.

I was completely pleased with the service. They were pleasant, prompt, responsive to all my calls, reasonably priced, and did a fine job. I needed to have the work done quickly because of my landscaping schedule to replace the dead tree, and they were able to do it even sooner than originally expected.

Only call this company, if you have money to burn. Also, don't call them if you only need a small job done (i.e., a single tree cut down). They apparently have no need or desire to take on small jobs. Why else would they charge so much to take down a single tree?
Description of Work: The estimator gave me an estimate of $1500, to cut down a Bradford Pear from the back yard. I had three other estimates, all of which were in the range of $500-700. I don't understand how this company's estimate can be more than 100% higher, than the next highest estimate.

Response from Richard's Tree Service
OUR PRICE WAS FOR TRIMMING THE TREE AND REDUCING THE SIZE FOR $900.00 AND AN ADDITIONAL PRICE FOR REMOVING THE SPLIT AND DAMAGE BRANCH FOR $405.00. IT IS MORE EXPENSIVE TO TRIM A BRADFORD PEAR THAN REMOVING BECAUSE IT TAKES MORE TIME. WE ALSO PROVIDE CERTIFICATES FOR LIABILITY AND WORKMEN'S COMPENSATION INSURANCE WHICH PROTECTS THE CONSUMERS AGAINST ANY PROPERTY DAMAGE CAUSED BY THE TREE COMPANY OR INJURIES TO THE TREE WORKERS WHILE PERFORMING TREE SERVICES WHICH IS VERY DANGEROUS WORK. THE CONSUMER COULD BECOME LIABLE IF A TREE WORKER GETS HURT OR KILLED WHILE PERFORMING TREE WORK ON THEIR PROPERTY.

Richards was very prompt in getting us an estimate. I called and left a message and received a call back the next day. That same day we had an estimate on our door. We decided not to use Richards since the cost was so high. They were almost $3,000 than the other estimates I received.

Did not use this company, although clearly others in my neighborhood in North Arlington do.
Description of Work: I needed extensive professional pruning and shaping of trees and large shrubs and advice about the health of trees. Estimator arrived punctually, but was much less knowledgeable than I expected. He did not recognize either pyrocantha or forsythia. Estimate was oral, not written, and was almost 25% higher than the more knowledgeable person with whom I actually contracted.

I had requested an estimate from their company on Friday for their work. One of their arborists came by on Sunday morning to look it over. He provided a fair estimate right then, and there and said they would be able to do the work the next day if I liked. (I had fence people coming Tuesday, so I was relieved that the fence people wouldn't have the dead tree to contend with and the tree people wouldn't have to drag branches through an additional gate). They were prompt, polite, efficient and cleaned up the entire area beautifully. The trees all look great, and I will have them back to shape up my backyard trees next time. I was very happy with their service and would not hesitate to recommend them.
Description of Work: The company removed an approx. 50' dead apple tree from my backyard and trimmed/removed deadwood and elevated numerous other large sized trees in my front yard. They also removed 5 old overgrown/vine encrusted weedy shrubs (and ground up the stumps).

We are thrilled, all work done as discussed. We normally get 3 estimates for any work, here we had 2. Cost was similar with other company, until figuring Angie's list discount offered by Richard's, finally the work cost about $300 less than other estimate. Charles did the estimate, even called to say he was running about 10 minutes late. How many contractors do that?? Estimate Thurs., work done following Tues. Brought about 10 guys, they moved grill and lawn furniture to prevent damage. Hubby was happy because a botanist was part of the crew. Lawn was clean when they left and we highly recommend the company. In addition to being happy with the service, we believe we got a good value. We paid a fair price for work that needs special equipment, training, and multiple people.
Description of Work: Ground out 3 stumps and raked chips. Trimmed 40' magnolia tree for shape and to clear house, and trimmed 50' oak tree to remove deadwood and clear house. Cut vines off rain gutter (3 stories up), trimmed smaller maple tree, and removed all brush and debris.

Excellent job. Because of the time of year (February), they could schedule the job within days of the estimate. It was delayed a few days because of weather, but was still very timely. A very large crew arrived, went right to work, and the Arborist was there to supervise. Thorough clean-up, too. They discounted the job from $1,500 to $1,200 because of Angie's list mention. I estimated the job at well over $2,000, so it was a good deal.

After reading reviews about Richard's Tree Service in Angie's List, there was no doubt that we would contact them to get a quote to remove a tree that we have been wanting to have removed since we bought the townhouse over six years ago. Within 24 hours of our call, we had a written proposal in our hands. Within 6 days of our acceptance, they were here to do the work. I might, also, mention that a winter storm warning was in effect at the time they did the work. My husband and I appreciate their getting the job completed in a timely and professional manner.

Good and bad. Having received an estimate and made the arrangements to remove the shrubs in the back yard they somehow got their signals crossed and cut down my 30 foot spruce in the front yard. Everyone was extremely apologetic and responsive to do what they could to make amends. We settled on replacing the spruce with a dogwood which was my choice, but it was obviously a much smaller tree than the spruce. They subsequently came back and removed the shrubs that were originally supposed to be taken out. I was charged for the shrub removal but obviously not the spruce or replacement tree.

They did a great job of removing the trees without damaging any of the surrounding plantings (I removed all desirable plants from the immediate vicinity of the trunk, but there were quite a few others within the drip line). They came when they said they would, and handled everything via phone/fax, so I didn't have to take a day off.
