Estimator came as scheduled, provided helpful advice, and a very good estimate. Crew came out as scheduled several days later and accomplished the work. Excellent job! Tree looked great and cleanup was excellent. Only small detraction--the cherry picker outrigger created a couple inch deep depression in the yard that I had to subequently repair. No big deal, but probably could have been avoided. Overall--outstanding experience!!
Description of Work: Free estimate followed by trimming of a very large maple tree in our front yard.

The company did an excellent job of removing all the "wild" vegetation growing along the side of my townhouse. They were prompt and very professional, and overall, did a great job of cleaning the area when their work was done. When my HOA decided to hire a company to provide tree services for the community, I strongly recommended Richard's Tree Service. They were hired by the HOA, and on the day they were working in the community, I hired them to prune/shape/thin a huge maple tree in my front yard. They did a great job of shaping the tree and it didn't look like a "hack" job that I've seen from less reputable companies. I now have less fear of a huge branch falling on my house and car regardless snow or high winds.
Description of Work: I initially contracted Richard's Tree Service to remove all the wild trees (including grinding the stumps) and shrubs that were growing along the side of my townhouse (end unit). This included "native" maple and cherry trees that had grown to the height of my roofline which was a concern because of the potential damage that it might cause my roof. The company did such a good job, I had them prune/shape/thin a huge maple tree about a month later (price reflects both work).

The crew came on time, worked professionally and completed the job in only a few hours.
Description of Work: After quite a bit of wind damage to the trees in our yard, we hired Richard's Tree Service for some pretty major trimming and tree removal. They gave us a timely estimate and fit us in as soon as they could. The work was professionally done as we had specified. Two severely damaged trees and a bush were removed and other branches (large and small) were cut down. After the work was complete, they cleaned up the debris and left some of the wood for our fireplace, piled as we had asked.

Would not consider using this company again in the future.
Description of Work: I had similar experiences to what members previously have reported. I called Richard's Tree Service and asked for an estimate to get some tree work (trimming, pruning, cleaning, etc). A very professional gentlemen came out to my property and provided an estimate for about $3k to do the work. I had 3 other companies come and provide an estimate and all the other companies were 2/3 cheaper than Richard's ($1k) -- and to do the same work outlined in their proposal. If you decide to use this company I would recommend getting other estimates so you can compare.

James did my estimate and was extremely helpful and easy to deal with. He was responsive and easy to get in touch with. The team arrived on time and started right to work. Everything was done in under 2.5 hours and cleaned up very well. These guys knew what they were doing and I never had any worries about damage to my house.
Description of Work: A crew of about 7-9 men came to cut down 5 trees in my front and back yard and grind down the stumps. They cut down the trees and hauled them away. They also helped dispose of a very large pile of limbs and debris that had piled up in my back yard.

From the time we called to request an estimate, to the time they completed the job, this company is as professional as they come. They will call you back promptly, and make sure you are in the loop about everything!! They had a lot of business after the September storms, so it took them a few weeks to fit us into their schedule, but their timeframe estimate was accurate, and they came out the day and time they promised. They did such a nice job on our trees, I can't say enough good things about their work!! My husband, who is normally NEVER overly impressed with ANY company's work, was singing their praises to all of our neighbors and friends. As he said (more times than I needed to hear, really) "Richard's is the best tree company we've ever dealt with!!" I have to say, we've lived in our home for 20 years, and we've used probably 7 or 8 different tree services in that time. None of the others were even close to being re-hired by us. And I've saved every receipt for everything we've ever done to the house, and written notes on the really good and really bad ones. Let's just say I had nothing positive written on any of the other companies we've used. I will end this review by saying if you want to deal with a professional, who performs genuine quality work, at a more-than-reasonable price, and still maintains that small-town friendliness, Richard's Tree Service is the company for you. My husband, who never bothers about coupons, even when reminded, forgot to give them the 20% off coupon that had come in the mail. I called them up a few days after they had finished the work and asked if they would honor my coupon even though hubby forgot to present it at the time of service, and was cheerfully told of course they would. This is a company who not only talks the customer service talk, they walk the walk, too. Call them and never be disappointed in your tree service work again!!
Description of Work: We have two large oak trees in the front yard that have been sorely neglected, and, with the earthquakes, hurricanes and storms we've had lately, were very concerned that one of the tree-sized branches would fall and demolish our house or one of our cars. Richard's used their bucket to get to the very top of our trees, and cleaned out the dead branches and pruned them all the way down. They cleaned up after themselves to the degree that the yard looked better AFTER they did the work!!

We were trying to sell our house and needed to make our backyard look a little better. The old oak trees had grown ugly lower branches that were interfering with our view of the woods. Using Angie's List we called Richard's Tree Service. The estimator came to our house very quickly and we agreed on the work and price. Weather delayed the actual work a little, but it was finally completed to our satisfaction. We were especially happy with how well the workers cleaned up the yard.

We were the last house of ten jobs for the team on 21 September. They arrived in four vehicles, including the bucket loader and another truck towing the shredder. They probably had ten men on the team. Two cutters worked the tall tree via the bucket loader and ropes (I was told the certified arborist was the guy on the ropes), while another cutter worked the maple. Seven others made many back-and-forth marches to the shredder lugging branches and tree limbs. They took close to two hours, and found a lot more dead wood on the pin oak than I suspected was there. At the end, they honored the price estimate and the discount coupon. They left the place neat and clean - only the tiniest amount of sawdust remained on our lawn. Everything else was cleaned up and hauled away. Because this was a preventive effort, it wasn't covered by insurance and was a big expense for us. So I hope not to have to use their services again - but if I do need tree-trimming, I will absolutely call them, and I would recommend them to other Angie's List customers - which is why I give them an overall "A" grade.
Description of Work: I requested an estimate around the end of August for "routine" tree work. Due to Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee, they understandably took a week to come out. They called me for an appointment for the estimate, and though I thought it was on a Tuesday (and left work early to come home for it), no one showed - but then I got the call on Wednesday that they had shown up for an estimate. So I had to request the service to two different trees without being able to be there and point out what I wanted. It took another two weeks for them to put it into their schedule. They said they would come at 3pm, but when I arrived home at 3pm, the team already had started work approximately 2pm. The schedule unpredictability is the reason I gave them a "B" grade for responsiveness. I wanted them to trim three large branches on a 60' pin oak that was overhanging my garage, and remove the lowest 20' on a 50-foot silver maple in my front lawn. The estimate was $1800, but they agreed to use the Value Pack coupon for a 20% discount and the price was reduced to $1440 (with tax.)

I scheduled an estimate and a very pleasant gentleman came to my house. We walked the property together and I explained the exact scope of the work I wanted done. After spending some time discussing the job with me, he went to his truck and drafted up a written estimate. The estimate, even with the 10% Angie's List discount, was for $21,000.00. I was stunned. All in all, I obtained five estimates for exactly the same work. I ended up using a great company that did a fantastic job for, literally, one third of Richard's estimate. When I told the owner of the company that did the work that I had received an estimate that was three times higher than his, he said "Richard's, right?" They were pleasant and prompt, but the estimate was outrageously high. Check around and get other estimates before you decide.
Description of Work: I called Richard's to obtain an estimate for removing approximately a third of an acre of trees and dense underbrush from my property, grinding out the stumps, and hauling the debris.

We contacted Richard's for an estimate on the pruning of a large Silver Maple tree in our front yard. The tree had gotten very overgrown and had damaged limbs from previous storms. The estimate was completed as promised and we considered other contractors. The approach of Hurricane Irene made us very nervous about the tree. So we contacted Richard's to see if they could come out a few days before the storm to complete work. They were able to accommodate the request. Neither my wife or I could be present when the work was done. When we got home that evening, the tree was trimmed up and all the debris was removed. In fact, it was hard to tell that any work had been done because the ground under the tree was completely clear. All the dead and dangerous limbs were removed and the tree look much better. They left a detailed invoice tucked in the front door. We paid by credit card and mailed the invoice back in. The tree survived the storm with no problems. We are satisfied.

They did excellent work and would not hestitate to call again. Called for an estimate which I received the next day. Price undercut other providers by several hundred dollars. A few days later they called and offered an additional discount with no pressure to immediately say "yes". I called back in another couple of days and they honored the additional discont and we scheduled the work for the following week. A large crew of probably 10 people showed up and spent 3 hours working on the trees. At one point 3 people were in one tree. Crew was professional and cleaned up great, you could hardly tell they had been there. They even picked up various branches and sticks that I had in a pile in the backyard.

From beginning to end, Richard's Tree Service went great. First of all, the fellow was pretty much on time for the initial appointment. He came. Did his survey of the trees and yard with me, explaining everything all the way. He noticed the ivy on the side of the house, which I hadn't. And then wrote up an estimate. Again, saying they'd cut the ivy for no cost. They arrived in the afternoon of the appointed date, May 11 and worked without bothering us at all. We had had a rough morning with a plumber, so this was fantastic, not being interrupted while other house woes were happening. They left after about an hour and half. Cleaned up all the tree debris. And of course I got the Angie's List discount, which I am extremely grateful for in these times.
Description of Work: I've used Richard's Tree Service before. And they have always been great. In two different houses in VA. I had several trees damaged by the snow, wind, and rain storms. Some of the branches were literally hanging by a thread, and I was worried they would fall on the house, car, and/or people.. Was also worried about other bushes, trees in the yard as they were damaged by inclement weather also. Basically the service they performed was cutting and trimming branches from our huge evergreen tree, and others. As well as bushes that had been damaged. Also, They volunteered to cut some ivy from the house for free. How nice is that~

Overall, the experience has been excellent & easy. After the work was done, I thought they would just leave the tree parts without cleaning it up, but they ended up taking some of it away and cleaned up after themselves. There was nothing on my driveway or plants around the tree; they did a great job. It was more than I expected and I was very impressed. I had quotes up to $860 to do the work; it was a very big tree. They had to cut it in sections to take it down. I'm happy with their services.

Richards generally arrives with a good-sized crew, up to 10 men, and performs their work quickly and professionally. I have yet to come up with a job that takes them more than an hour or two. There is no one shouting orders...each man seems to know exactly what needs to be done and moves to do it. This most recent job was generated when the Richards crew was removing a large oak that a storm had brought down in my back yard. As they were cleaning up, co-owner Richard Berube spotted a hole about 20 feet up in a large white oak, got a ladder and climbed up to investigate. It turned out to be a squirrel nest that had eaten away at the inside of the tree until there was only a cylinder of wood supporting another ten feet of trunk and a good-sized canopy. It seemed to be only a matter of time before it was blown onto my house. Richards took it down three days later quickly and professionally. I recommend them very highly, and would definitely use them again.
Description of Work: This was the third time I have used Richards over the past year. They have removed two large oak trees and an arbor vitae, removed deadwood that overhung my house and trimmed back some pines and a large holly. This latest job was removal of a large white oak.

The team arrived on time, the supervisor talked with me to verify what I wanted done, and the work was done very quickly. The supervisor explained what was possible to do that would give me what I wanted, but not damage the tree (the tree is actually my neighbor's and as much as I would like the tree gone, I don't actually want to kill it).

I called and spoke to Kay to request a quote on 3/17/11. She was very pleasant. I received a call back and they were able to send Charles to my house the same day to provide a written quote. I called Kay on 3/18 to schedule the work. Since the trees were not close to my house and it wasn't urgent Kay scheduled the work for the following week. Kay called me on 3/22 to advise that the trees would be cut down on 3/23. George arrived early afternoon on 3/23, cut the trees, and provided me with the invoice. Their payment process is very accommodating. They not only accept checks, but also credit cards. I would definitely use their service again. They were pleasant, prompt and efficient.
