It went exactly as promised. The sales person (Ted) was well informed and straightforward. He was an advocate for the company but seemed genuinely most concerned about my satisfaction, and he knew a lot about windows. I was most impressed when he acknowledged not being familiar with a specific online resource I found, and then went to the trouble to call me back and explain how it related to our conversation. After ordering, there were weekly emailed updates on the progress of window construction. After a few weeks, the installation date was set. On that date, the team showed up on time, and was very professional and efficient for the next day and half. Installation was completed, clean-up done, and everything looks great. I did half the house. I now plan to have Windows Universe back to do the other half.
Description of Work: The builder grade windows in my house started falling apart. I looked for replacement window providers with a solid product who could also provide removal of the old windows and installation of the new with minimum hassle to my family. My neighbor had recently used Window Universe after considering many alternatives -- I also looked at many alternatives and ultimately went with his recommendation. The windows are made by Revere.

The service went very smoothly, from the initial meeting through the installation. They did a very good job of keeping us updated on the progress and both the sales man and the installer were right on time! I am especially pleased when on the installation day they gave me a window of 8-10am and arrived right at 8! Can't beat that. I have already recommended them to a neighbor.

We began the process receiving 3 quotes through various companies. The salesman, Nate, came out in the middle of a snow storm (In February) for our scheduled appointment. He looked at the windows and gave us a quote. We decided on using Windows Universe because they had the lowest price, offered 0% financing and had really good reviews on Angie's list. We made the decision, and signed the contract in March. About a week later we were contacted for windows measurements, which took about 30 minutes to complete. We ended up waiting about 6 weeks from signing the contact to installation. The windows were installed in 1 day, with 2 installers present. There was some minor damage to the surrounding walls of the windows, but that is to be expected when replacing windows, nothing a little paint and Spackle couldn't fix. Before the installers left, they had me check each window and they would quickly fix any issues I noticed (like caulk missing, or too much in one area). The windows have made such a difference in keeping our home cool in the summer. We still have an old sliding door, which does not have any sort of UV protector on it, and when standing in front of the door you can feel the heat severely when the sun in shining, making the carpet very hot underfoot. When standing in the light of the new window beside it (with the same amount of sun coming through) it is barely warm. The master bedroom upstairs was always hot in the summer before replacing the windows, now it much improved. We cannot wait to see what a difference we will experience in the winter!

It went okay. We had a little bit of a disagreement about price but they are good overall. I bought a coupon with Angie's List and they didn't want to honor it. They said that they could not add that discount on top of their 110% March discount. The workers were good and prompt.

Great Job - I have a Custom Wood Bay Window that matches all the other wood windows in my house. Called 8 companies, all wanted to replace the whole Bay at a considerable cost, and could not match the wood Windows Universe was the only company that could do the job. They gave me pricing for replacing the Bay and also for just replacing the windows. The windows look great and the outside of my house looks better than before. It is refreshing to see a company tell you the truth up front so you can make an informed decision. As a side note, 2 of the companies I had contacted followed up and when I said I found a company that would replace the windows all of sudden they too could change just the windows. The experience was OK. They canceled because of weather on the day of our first scheduled appointment. Understandable, but would have been helpful if they had canceled before I waited for them for two hours and was late to work. On the day they did the installation, they showed up on time and got the job done. I got out of the house to stay away from the construction, but several of my neighbors called me more than once over the course of the day to complain that the workmen had been rude to them, including neighbors who typically are extremely nice and uncomplaining. That left a bad taste in my mouth. I also bought an Angie's List deal for the installation. When I got the final bill, I asked twice if they had applied the discount, and they assured me they had. The bill looked high to me, however, so I asked for an itemized receipt. At that point, they realized they had failed to credit me for the deal and did so. I appreciated their responsiveness at that point, but shouldn't an itemized receipt be standard to ensure accuracy? Otherwise, however, the construction seemed to go well and the windows look nice and function well.

They held to their price-match guarantee so that with the Angle's List special, the replacement cost me less than the competitor. The sales rep, the measuring person and the installers were prompt, courteous and professional. It took several weeks for the windows to be fabricated, but once done, the team scheduled the installation immediately. Today I was particularly impressed with Ryan and Eddie who, in this pestiferous heat, tackled the job and didn't finish until all was done with the utmost care. And, they never lost their sense of humor. My carpet is cleaner than before they started! The outside is impeccable, too. Great company, great service.

The work was done promptly, and clean, they took care not to trample my flower beds, and when finish they vacuumed the dust inside the house, I had some loose shutters, they tightened them up for me, the crew was courteous and cheerful, I would definitely hire again.

Called Window Universe in March to have windows installed - the sales rep came out promptly - I have already used Window Universe so I was familiar with the product but I do know they upgraded to "premium window" from what would have been a moderate price window - the pricing was a little high but I knew of the price increase as they had sent a letter regarding the change and that the pricing was going up so I wasn't surprised that they were little more expensive than before - other than that the only downside was the windows took longer than expected (about two week delay) and I then I had to delay installation due to company being in town - however, once arranged - the tech came out and installed them quickly and professionally - so all in all a good experience and I would use Window Universe again

Our storm door blew open in a wind storm (wouldn't stay latched) and the door banged around. The bottom of the door detached from the rest of the door at one corner. Window Universe installed all four storm doors (ProVia) on our house about 5 years ago and we rated them highly for the original installation. After about 7 weeks of discussion, Window Universe ordered a replacement door at their own expense which fits perfectly. The re-installation workmanship was excellent and the door closes properly now.

We don't produce the storm doors and we don't write the warranty so we need to coordinate warranty repairs with the manufacturer. In this case we fixed the door at our expense when the manufacturer said that it was not covered by the warranty. It's always our goal to make sure all of our customers have great experiences even 5 years after our project is completed.

the actual installation went ok, but again we were charged an inordinate amount for no additional "lead abatement" safety or removal; part of the ADDITIONAL dealer profit. Scheduling was also broken no less than 3 times with no compensation for our lost work time or MAJOR inconveniences......they are a veritable "puppy mill" for windows.....you get what you get...all profit driven at your expense.
Description of Work: Overpromised on their scheduling to install the windows, no less than three times. Caused us a lot of headaches and wasted time to try to be there, when they couldn't make it. Basically, they put the customers who pay for express service ahead of you and break appointments to accommodate those who pay their "ransom". UNPROFESSIONAL x 3. They also overcharge for supposed "lead abatement"---the test is a total sham.....read---additional DEALER PROFIT. There were no extra measures taken by the workers during installation aside from the costs they already charge you for installation and clean-up.

Well, we always hate to hear from any customer who wasn’t thrilled with their project, but perhaps this can be a good opportunity to explain how some of our processes work. All of the windows we install are custom made either in North Carolina or Ohio and then shipped to us. The manufacturers we work with typically keep to a pretty tight lead time, but their ability to do that depends on the order volume they receive. For example, if we order 250 windows for an apartment project they’ll typically come in right on time. However, if 10 companies each place 250 window orders on the same day along with the thousands of other orders something will likely get backordered. We have many orders in progress at any given time so we need a clear way to prioritize. We don’t want to let the customer who yells and screams get ahead of the person who is reasonable and understanding. In our minds that just rewards the difficult behavior and it penalizes the person who acts like a grown up. That wouldn’t be fair. So, our scheduling is pretty simple. Every project is prioritized based on the date the customer placed the order with us. If you place an order on June 15th, your project will have a higher priority than the customer who placed their order on June 16th. That seemed like a pretty fair way to approach things. We do sometimes have customers who have a firm deadline. They may be closing on a house, or hosting a wedding reception on a certain date and they want their project completed by a specific date. For those customers we do offer rush service which guarantees installation by a specific date. This member refers to rush service as a ransom, which seems a little harsh, but she’s entitled to her opinion. There are still a lot of moving parts so as part of our rush process we outline the variables and let folks know what will happen if we cannot make that date. Again, the idea is to set the expectations clearly so we’re all on the same page. The goal with all of our scheduling is to be as transparent and fair as possible. As part of our typical process we don’t schedule an installation date until the windows have been received and inspected. The point of that policy is to reduce the number of variables that can affect the installation schedule. In this case the customer was very eager to get the windows installed and they successfully pushed us to schedule the installation date before we had the windows. We deviated from our typical plan to try to help the customer and it backfired. The windows were backordered by a few days and we missed that installation date. When she says that the installation had to be rescheduled she is absolutely correct. If we had followed our plan and not scheduled anything until the windows were here things would have gone better. We were trying to help and it didn’t work. Even the best laid plans… She also mentions the charges for lead paint containment in the review. She incorrectly uses the term lead abatement, which we do not do. We follow the EPA mandated process for lead paint containment just like every other company is required to do. We do charge for that, just like every other company, and the cost of that service is included in our 110% Best Value Guarantee so we guarantee it’s the absolute best price on Angie’s List. IMPORTANT, there is no company on Angie’s List offering better pricing for these services. We guarantee it. I’m not sure about the puppy mill comment. We have a beautiful redbone coonhound running around our office most of the time (you can see him on our company facebook page) and we got him from a rescue group. He’s a great friend and he loves great deals on windows just as much as we do. We’re not supporters of puppy mills! All kidding aside, we know when you’re shopping for windows the process can be confusing and it can be difficult to evaluate your options. Our goal is always to be the easiest company to work with and we try very hard to have a plan for every contingency. We had some initial concerns about replacing windows in the middle of a cold winter. Window Universe worked around weather issues and did a great job installing new windows and doors. They protected interior space and removed all debris and old doors and windows.

Consumers be aware: This is the WORST company that I?ve seen! EVER! Too bad they don?t have ZERO (star). We bought our home the summer of 2012 and as a result of home inspection, previous owner PAID replacement of 2 windows from Window Universe on April 10th 2012. To proceed with the closing, Window Universe sent us this letter to us: "To all parties concerned: This letter confirms the balance for the glass repair project at address **** #### Ct. Chantilly, VA 20### has been paid in full and no additional costs will be added upon installation. As for the timeline for completion of the project, it will take about 10 business days from the time we submit the template to the manufacturer for the whole window to complete production and be shipped to our warehouse?.." ===End of Window Universe Letter ===== . The nightmare started here. The first installation was scheduled on September 5th, 2012. Installer come in with the wrong window for one window. They rescheduled to October 6th and again without our consent changed it to October 20th. Each time, we had to call multiple times to confirm time and they either bring a wrong window or they unilaterally cancel the appointment! Finally, installation completed, albeit late with persistence on our part and countless calls/emails. We thought we were finally done dealing with Window Universe headache. However, soon after installation, we noticed that the half-circle custom window they replaced is badly leaking. We called to notify them and asked them to fix it. We were told someone will come out on Wednesday September 24th to fix it. I took a day off from work to be at home for this. On Wednesday morning, instead of a repair person/technician, a guy with no tools shows up at my home to ?take a look? at the window! He informed me that issue may be with ?outside sealing? and he will have someone to come by and apply ?silicon?. No one showed up to fix it as promised. I called on Friday. After a long wait on the phone, I was informed someone will be out on Monday to finally fix the window. On Monday, I was left a Voice Mail stating that they can?t send anyone after-all on Monday and they will come on Tuesday instead. Tuesday came and haven't heard from anyone! No One bothered to followup with us. No fix. No refund. No apology. NOTHING! I would rather get a root-canal than calling this company again. No one takes responsibility. They transfer your calls or simply hang-up. Asking to speak a manager does not help either. SAVE Yourself a headache and Don't use this company. Horrible Horrible experience.

Well that's obviously not an ideal review, and we'll be glad to offer a little insight. There are 2 main issues at play here so let's take a look at both of them. First, anytime we're doing work for someone who didn't hire us things can sometimes get rocky. I don't exactly know why that is, but it probably has to do with the fact that the folks we end up working for weren't the folks who made the decision to hire us. We don't start out with any report and we don't have any sort of opportunity to set expectations. Anyone who has ever worked in any sort of customer service field will likely agree that setting expectations is a huge part of making people happy. In this case the customer who hired us sold the home and left and we completed the project for the new homeowners. The next factor is the product offering. As you can see this project was started at the end of 2012 and completed in 2013 (several of the dates in the review are not accurate). Back then we offered a window repair service and after 6-9 months we stopped that program. Here's the backstory: For years we received many calls per week from folks asking us to repair their existing windows. These calls ranged from fixing a window that won't stay open to replacing foggy glass. It breaks our hearts to say no to customers so after getting literally hundreds of these calls we decided to hire a service tech and expand our offering. We hired a great guy with years of experience, we bought a fancy truck and we were in business. Unfortunately we quickly discovered that there is a reason most companies don't offer this service. We learned that as soon as we touched someone’s tired old windows they would assume we own all responsibility for that window for the rest of our lives. It's sort of like thinking that since a mechanic fixed your 10 year old car once you should blame him when you get a flat tire. In this case we replaced the glass in a couple windows and the project was complete. One of the windows did come in with an incorrect grid pattern and it was promptly reordered. After the project was complete and shortly after this member moved into the home a leak was discovered in one of the windows. We made multiple trips to determine the cause. It turns out the water was getting in behind the siding above the window in an area that was completely unrelated to the glass we replaced. Regardless, the customer was unhappy so we fixed the leak for them at no charge. We did not cause the leak, but we did fix it at our expense without any cost to the customer. If I could put that last sentence in bold I would. After all of that the end result was that we had someone who wasn't happy and we don't like that. In fact we had several folks around that time who weren't happy. After enough feedback like that we discontinued our window repair service. We just couldn't find a way to work on old windows without folks expecting them to become perfect new windows. Since around the middle of 2013 we've stopped offering repair service except for windows we installed. An exceptional and professional job from start to finish. After we reset our project timeline from the winter to the spring, Window Universe came back out for a free consultation a second time. They were crystal clear on our replacement door options and the timeline for installation, and the salesman offered no-nonsense pricing. The sales and door measurement process were both very smooth. Once the door was ready for installation (~6 weeks after the initial payment), the replacement team was actually 5 minutes early to the start of what we were told was a 3 hour arrival window (a very nice surprise). They took their time removing the old door and carefully repairing wood rot under the frame and were sensitive to leaving any dust or dirt in the kitchen area. The work done on the exterior of the home to ensure no water leaked into or under the new door was comprehensive and it looks amazing. The team was ready to tackle that issue and came prepared. Finally, the installation crew triple-checked the area to make sure they didn't leave anything behind and removed everything associated with the old door. I have no hesitation recommending Window Universe to anyone looking to replace the sliding glass door to their backyard; knowing what we do now we should have called them a long time ago!

We've now used Window Universe for two sets of replacement windows: one set of 10 double-hung windows on our main level (kitchen, living room, dining room) and one set of sliding windows for our basement. In both cases, we were replacing original, 90-year-old windows. Window Universe provided timely service - on time for the sales meetings, measurements and installations - and a good value. And even better, they left the rooms cleaner than they found them -- a big plus with little kids in the house! Wouldn't hesitate to use them again.

If I could rate Window Universe any higher I would. Professional, prompt, and expert service. I track my energy use closely and saw an immediate benefit the first month. Extremely happy with the contractors that installed the windows... competent, courteous and clean. Window Universe sells a solid product that were installed properly and operate perfectly. An added bonus was the high level of communication across the board. Emails and phone calls every week. These folks are good at what they do. I will use them again. My home was built in 1967 and had wooden single pane glass.

I love working with window universe. I have used them twice now. The first time I used them when I was living in a condo and we replaced al the windows in the building (approx 115 windows). Their service is and was outstanding. The in home consultation is professional and no hassle, the measurement phase is timely and the techs are courteous and professional, and the installation is minimally invasive. The second round that i used them i ordered two windows and one of them showed up to the factory cracked. The company communicated this to me before sending the window to my home. This certainly saved me a lot of hassle and waiting. I would and often do recommend this company to friends who are comtemplating a window replacement.

We talked to Window Universe after having a couple of hard (and long) sells from Thompson Creek and Champion. We were pretty tried of hearing cliched sales pitches, pointless markdowns etc. Nate from Window Universe was a breath of fresh air. He didn't use any high pressure tactics or jargon. We actually enjoyed talking with him. The prices quoted by Window Universe was slightly lower than the other two, but we felt confident to go with them because of other good reviews and our experience with Nate. Folks came for measurement in a couple of weeks, they were super quick. They were in and out in 10 mins. The installation went as planned. It went pretty smooth overall, but the actual colors on the windows felt different from the samples we saw. The exterior color actually worked better for us, but something to keep in mind if you're particular. The windows looks fine, I don't know if I would say they are premium quality. We've had the windows for about a year, and while its hard to say how it might compare with other companies, I can say that the house does feel better insulated, but our utility bills overall haven't dropped by more than 10% from our crappy 30 year old windows that didn't shut properly. However, this did seem in line with what my neighbors had too when they replaced their windows with other (seemingly good) companies.

There was a lot of confusion as to when the windows would be installed due to bad weather and approaching holiday. During the waiting period there were changes made to the order that were unexpected. They order grid design windows to the basement (more expensive) although we really didn't want it. We accepted the change just to get the job done/finished. The windows are nice quality & we are happy with them, however with illness in the family it created yet another job for us to finished painting everything before any warping occurs to the unfinished wood. I was emailed for a review on the work, yet after I sent a response I was never contacted again. Guess they don't care if we come back to get the upstairs windows done next year!
Description of Work: Replaced windows in basement & main floor. They added a garden window to the kitchen window, but did not paint the wood portions of it. The floor and wood trim/edge were left as bare wood. There were damaged window sills replaced in living room that were not painted either.

This one is a bit challenging to explain. We've been in touch with this member since we saw this report, but we're still confused as to how we got here. I've personally reviewed their initial order and it appears the windows we installed are exactly as they were ordered back in October. The grids are the same, the interior finish is the same, the colors are the same and the price is the same. We absolutely are not perfect and we have made mistakes before, but it does not appear that anything is wrong with the order. I know tone can be lost when writing online, so I'l tell you I bring this up not to make any excuses, but to illustrate the difficulty in projects that can seem simple. We try to create our clear and itemized forms to make the process absolutely as easy as we can. The options selected are clearly laid out and itemized along with the colors for everything and all of the details. We know some of the terminology can be unfamiliar which is why we have a final checklist that the customer goes through where we again ask them to double check their order to make sure they understand everything and encouraging them to ask questions if they are unsure of anything. This customer signed off on the original order showing the colors and the grids and they signed off on the checklist saying they had reviewed their order and asked any questions. The point of these forms is to try to systematically root out any problems before the products are produced and installed. The cost of 2 windows with grids doesn't make a lick of difference, but having a customer with a window they weren't expecting makes us sad. We review any customer that wasn't thrilled in our weekly team meetings with the goal of identifying how we could have made the customer happier. In this case, I'm preparing for our meeting later today and I'm not sure what to suggest. I'll probably tell the team that we needed to do a better job of scheduling around the snow or quickly rescheduling after this customer cancelled her measurement appointment. Those things are probably true, but I don't feel like they go to the heart of the concern about grids and colors. Perhaps sometimes you get a clear understanding of the phrase, you can please all of the people some of the time and some of the people all of the time, but that doesn't feel like an acceptable answer to me. We'll keep working on it, and I hope anyone considering a replacement window or door project will take a look at our website and give us give us a ring. There is absolutely no company on Angie's List that offers a better value when it comes to windows and doors and we would love the opportunity to show you what we could offer. I'm not sure how to respond to this one. We met with this customer nearly 2 years ago. He bought a coupon before he met with us, it turns out he wanted something we didn't offer, so we returned his coupon. That seems like a pretty reasonable situation, not sure why it warrants a C, but I guess some folks are just tough graders! We have reached out to this member both by phone and by email, but we have not received a response in several days.
