The sevice tech was professional and explained things well, but I had somehow thought that looking into the inner-workings of the furnace with a camera - or at least cleaning out the inside of my furnace would be part of the deal - not so. He did clean some carbon build-up off a sensor for me with some sandpaper. He also replaced the filter for me, but didn't supply a filter - he used mine. He wasn't aware that the water-heater safety-check was part of the advertised special, so I had to ask him for it, and he looked at the water heater, but informed me he didn't really know what he was looking for in there. The best part of the deal was the 'free' carbon-monoxide detector they gave me - as per the advertised special. Bottome Line: Friendly service and a good deal, but less work/service than I had expected.

Their technician arrived within the scheduled window, was appropriately and neatly dressed in the company's uniform, wore shoe coverings, was very courteous, and completed the work satisfactorily and in an appropriate amount of time. He reviewed what was done and discussed any problems (there were none).

They guy who came was very polite, and I like they cover their shoes before they enter the house. The service was quick and efficient. He explained what he did and I think they are professional. Also every time I called, the people in customer service are very attentive and nice. Good job Whipple!
Description of Work: We got the anual package with them, so our first service was for free. They came to tune up both furnaces, clean and replace filters.

We got raped on the cost!!! We had a leak in our home that we discovered on a Sunday. It was a slow leak. We called them and they said they could have someone come out the same day for no extra Sunday / weekend charge. That was great and they showed up in just a few hours. It was 2 guys. The plumber and a trainee. They were both nice. The trainee even made paper airplanes for our kids the flew great. They had to tear into the wall to replace the leaking water main valve. The total time to repair the job from start to finish was about 90 minutes. That included about 30 minutes for them to drive over to their warehouse to get a new valve needed for the job. So actual labor time was about 1 hour. I was shocked and astounded when they charged $601.40 (including parts, labor, and tax). I don't know the cost of the brass valve but I imagine from Home Depot I could by all the materials for well under $100. Tax was about $40 so that leaves labor approximately $450 for a total of 90 minutes of time!!!!!!! A lot of doctors and lawyers would be jealous. Whipple uses a flat rate pricing schedule. Instead of just charging an honest fee for an honest job they use several different pricing schemes to become a member and to use them again and again and if you don't you get screwed like we did. Their pricing works out beautifully for people whose main valves are really difficult to access and a lot of work is required but it was absolutely terrible for us. We later had to hire a drywall person to come in to repair the wall they tore apart because, of course, they just do plumbing. I called the main office several times to complain over the next several days or weeks and I got poor response. It was difficult getting to the right person or to get call backs from her. I think it was Susan?? Eventually I complained so much that I got a refund of $150 but it was a lot of work getting it out of them. I had to complain and negotiate with her to the point the whole process was really painful. I would not recommend them to others based on my poor experience. I like to hire people that do honest, good work and charge a fair price and this is far from what I got from them.

Response from Whipple Service Champions
Dear Member, We are so sorry to hear that your experience with our company was less than the positive experience we want all our customers to have. In response to your pricing concern, we have actually recently completed an extensive pricing survey and we found that while we are not the least expensive, we are typically in the bottom three of similar companies providing similar services. We understand that plumbing repairs can be costly and we completely sympathize with your budget concern, which is why our certified service technicians always discuss pricing up front so that our clients know what to expect prior to the work being done. We have found that this approach allows our clients the opportunity to make an informed decision as to whether they want to proceed with the service request, or find another alternative. While we appreciate your positive comment about our company not charging extra for evening and weekend repairs - which we typically don't, we do still have the overhead of keeping our company open 24/7 by maintaining certified service technicians on call and having our trucks stocked; this ensures that we can respond to those service calls that happen inconveniently on evenings and weekends. We feel that the price originally charged was fair. It appears however, that in order to provide you with a better overall experience, one of our customer service representatives agreed to rebate 150 dollars to you. We are saddened that this rebate didn't improve your satisfaction as intended.

We think the install went really well. The service technicians showed up - white shirts, clean cut and really pleasant. I was impressed that they met with us first to go over their install plan, and they kept all the noisy stuff to the lunch hour. They cleaned up after themselves. I was really impressed. After the initial installation, the air flow wasn't as much as expected. Our landlord made a service call request and they were out here the next day and fixed it. I would use this company at my own house.
Description of Work: During this past summer, the temperatures in our area spiked to triple digits. My company rents a small office space where the air conditioner went out. The working conditions were becoming unbearable. We were all hot and grumpy. My landlord called 3 or 4 HVAC people and everyone was backed up, and really not in a position to even make an appointment. It was a "maybe today or maybe tomorrow thing" or "we'll call you." I suggested that my landlord call Whipple and while they couldn't schedule an appointment that day, they did make an appointment for the end of that same week, and they showed up when they said they would. We were all really relieved when saw their truck in our parking lot. Whipple instlled a new A/C and furnace unit. They did it quickly and without disrupting our work day. They were great.

I called them and told them to stop the monthly charges. Why did they make me sign a maintenance contract on a new furnace when they knew they could not open or work on the new furnace? They never returned the monthly charges they had already made
Description of Work: I had install a new furnace by another company when I contacted applewood. I signed a maintenance contract with them for the new furnace and AC. Every month they charged my credit card but when it was time to check or tune up the new furnace, the tech said that he could not touch the furnace because it was new. He could not touch the new furnace but they were charging me every month?

I'm considering to sue Whipple Plumbing, Heating & A/C. None of the work they did is working properly. I have leaking pipes and poor heating and air conditioning. They didn't fix things, they replaced them but they used the cheapest possible products, overcharged, and they stopped returning my calls when I wanted to use their advertised guarantee. My 1 year old air conditioner works non stop to keep the room at 80 degrees. The quality of their work is awful. I don't want them coming near my place again because every time they come here it costs me another few thousand dollars. I had to pay extra for every little thing. Their business practices are disgraceful, borderline criminal, and definitely unethical.

We needed a new water heater and decided to go with a "reputable" plumbing company as opposed to a smaller, less advertised company. We assumed that the extra cost would be worth it. The tank cost more and installation cost more. To offset the cost increase we were offered a "membership" in their service program which did save us some money. One of the "benefits of the membership was a tuneup of our furnace and air conditioners. And inspection of existing plumbing (pipes, toilets etc.) We were told that this also included one free toilet repair. The toilet repair was not listed on the contract and so when we scheduled the tuneup we were told that we must have been mistaken about the free repair. During the tuneup and inspection the service man found multiple things that needed repair. Suggesting we change the nozzles and pipes to our clothes washer, change all the ball and flappers in the toilet tanks and several things with our furnace and air conditioner (which were just 2 years old and still under warranty) We had them fix the one toilet which we had assumed would be the "free repair" but instead cost $120.00. The service man was visibly unhappy that we did not want him to do the other repairs he recommended. The same day that he repaired the toilet and after he left it wouldn't flush. I called the Whipple office and scheduled them to come back out to fix it. I was told there would not be a charge. Well, the part to fix the toilet was $100. At this point I knew I was being taken but just wanted them out of my house. Bottom line: I felt that the price for the water heater and installation was extremely high. The "service membership" was misrepresented to get us to sign up for it. During the inspection and tuneup the repairs that were suggested were not needed (which was confirmed later by another plumber). The price for the toilet repair was very high and suspiciously needed another repair after the service man worked on it, which wasn't covered in the initial repair cost. I felt uncomfortable with the repair man and felt bullied into paying the higher prices and having to pay twice to fix the toilet. We cancelled the service agreement. After this experience I checked the Better Business Bureau web site and found this company had lost it's accreditation status and had 79 complaints against them.

I used Whipple to install a new gas-forced air furnace at my house in late 2010 and was pleased with the work but felt afterwords that I could have secured a better deal and may have spent too much money. The work crew caused some minor damage to my flooring but Whipple paid for the repairs without complaint. If you are considering Whipple for a new furnace make sure you get competitive quotes for the work. The technicians that Whipple uses are very professional and courteous. It would be nice to see the same technician more than once but that has not yet happened. I am a monthly subscriber to Whipple which gives me discounted and/or free standard services during the year. I have found that the cost of the subscription is worth it based on the cost of the free standard services provided (seasonal AC tuneup, seasonal furnace inspection and tuneup, plumbing inspections). Do not become a monthly subscriber unless you plan on using Whipple for all of these services, otherwise it is not worth the money.

The AC eventually worked as advertized, after several service calls and replacement of the unit outside. The furnace, on the other hand, has NEVER worked as advertized. I've lost count of the number of service calls these guys have come out on. They've adjusted it more than ten times, de-rated it twice and replaced it with a smaller unit. Their delaying tactics are epic and after this began to drag on it became apparent this 95% furnace wasn't ever going to run better than the 80% contractor special it replaced. For the last 5 months I've been fighting to get a partial refund from them with the help of the BBB. I'm not real impressed with the BBB either. I feel that a partial refund is in order, since I do have a furnace that heats my house, but the price I paid was 2-3000 dollars more than just replacment with another 80% unit. Don't let these people into your house. They are some of the slickest talking sales people you'll ever meet, and they have no qualms about stiffing you for an overpriced appliance.
Description of Work: AC compressor failed. I solicited bids from several businesses. While Whipple's bid was higher than every one else's, they had a 10 year warranty and Ken whipple was all over the radio claiming his HVAC systems would save 30% on utility bills. I chose the Whipple system, furnace and AC. BIG mistake! Don't even let these people into your house. Whipple Corp Headquarters 963 West Folsom Ave. Salt Lake City, UT 84104 877-944-7753

Backstory: We have two AC units at our home. One was no longer working appropriately and we searched around for what repair options existed. We noticed that Whipple offered a $49.00 AC tune-up special with one of their flyers and decided to go with them. AC Tune-Up: The service tech that came out, Hampton Harrington, was incredibly nice and knowledgable. He spent roughly 3.5hrs at our home for only $98 ($49.00 an AC unit) going over the units from top to bottom. He did find a number of issues with both AC units, which wasn't surprising since they handn't been serviced in 8+yrs. He thoroughly explained the issues with the units, showing us the actual damage and defective components. He explained their pricing structure and said that since it was a lot of money we should think it over before proceeding. Never once did he attempt to pressure us into getting anything repaired. AC Repairs: We decided to have them preform the work that was needed. They sent over 2 technicians this time and it took them roughly the entire day to complete the work. It was a pleasure having them over. They were friendly and walked us through everything they were doing. Their prices might be high at first glance, but their work is worth it. You get the strong impression that they are so well trained that the could repair the units with their eyes closed. After everything was done both AC units were working better than they ever had, even when we first got them. Follow-Up: Several days later one of our AC units stopped working. We immediately called Whipple and they sent a technician out within 1hr of calling them. The technician discovered that some bugs had crawled onto the AC contactor and had fried the unit. Fortunately it was one of the items we had replaced and was under warranty. They replaced the unit free of charge and were done in less than an hour. Overall it was roughly 2hrs from placing the call to totally repaired. They really are a good business to work with.

I heard their advertisement all the time and then they came out and did a whole bunch of stuff for us in the house as it was neglected. They had two types of people out. They had a bunch of plumbers come out to get a few things replaced, fixed and check leaks. There was a valve that didn't work in the bathroom. I completely replaced the furnace and the air conditioning unit including the coil, the condenser and all that. It was just completely started over. Except the air ducts they replaced everything. They seemed very conscientious and pretty concerned that the house had white carpet in it. So they put work carpets over everything so that nothing got into a mess. They were pretty good about that. I did not try to get bids or anything like that so my wife was a little unhappy that I was in a hurry to get it all done and she thinks I could have got it done for cheaper. I don’t have any clue because I just said lets do what needs to be done when its possible because I wanted to move my daughter in there. From a pricing point of view I have no clue if I paid too much or not but they did very good work and everything seems to be perfect. I knew i had some issues and putting a band aid on it wouldn't have worked so I am happy with the work they have done.

I was positively impressed with Jason, and with his description of the company and its policies and installation process But not with the price.
Description of Work: I asked for an estimate to replace an old furnace and AC. Jason arrived at the the agreed upon time put booties on to protect the floor as he came in. He first gave a detailed descript8ion of the company policies and the basis for choosing the type of equipment we might consider. He then took measurements of the house and identified the number and location of vents as well as inspecting the existing equipment and installation noting venting changes that would be required. By company policy they include cleaning of all heat/AC ducts and obtaining a local permit. He said they provide discounts during slack seasons to keep their installers occupied year round. When I mentioned that I would be getting additional estimates, he found an additional discount. He said that the discount related to time of year could not be guaranteed beyond a week, and I agreed to let him know within a week. I was impressed with his description of the company and its policies. In a week I called to report that I had chosen another company (one with a solid A rating in Angie's list) who offered installation of similar equipment but with slightly less service for $ 3000 less. To me that was a significant difference.

I called the company for a quote, I had to tell them repeatedly that I just needed a water nothing else. I also mentioned to the gentleman on the phone that I did not want to be charged $1200.00 like I had been recently, he said they would not do that. He also told me that there would be a $200.00 charge for the after hours call, that was fine with me I was in a bind. The installer showed up gave a $1700 dollar quote to my partner an accountant and he accepted it. It was a basic installation, no serge tank or straps, no city permit and he was not there for more than two hours. We paid the bill but will never contact this plumber again for anything. Why: I own a plumbing store building, they tell me a 50 gallon water cost around $400.00, parts $100.00, over time fee $200.00. I have a hard time believing that the labor was $500.00 an hour.

Whipple rescheduled my appointment twice. I assume this is because my system is under warranty and I would not be charged for the visit. As above, their tech recommended some expensive repairs that were unnecessary and seemed designed only to upsell the visit. I've been extremely disappointed with Whipple on several different occasions. In four separate appointments, I have been asked to reschedule because they "had an emergency". Their services are very overpriced and their work is poorly executed. I would not recommend them under any circumstances.
Description of Work: Whipple installed an A/C unit for me in late 2008. (I paid far too much at $7000--they offered to install a new furnace for an additional $9000). I supposedly have a 10 year warranty on the unit. Unfortunately, the warranty is only as good as the company that backs it. I called Whipple this spring because the the air coming from the vents was not cold. Whipple's technician told me that I needed both a new blower fan AND a new capacitor for my 4 year old furnace. The quote was roughly $900. I called another company; they simply replaced the coolants and my system works well now. The second company stated specifically that I did not need to replace either of the components as recommended by Whipple.
