I had a wonderful experience with MountainWest. My furnace was having problems staying on and it would quit for several hours at a time. This was a huge problem during these cold winter nights. I came here to Angie's List and found MountainWest. They were very friendly from the very first phone call. I called at 8:30am today and they were able to arrive around noon same day. Super fast service. I received a phone call as the technician was on his way to my home. I had the pleasure to work with their technician Jim Murphy. Jim was amazing. Very professional, kind, and knowledgeable. He explained everything he was doing step-by-step and didn't get annoyed or bothered with the hundred different questions I had. He was able to locate the problem quickly and fix it right there. On top of all that, the price couldn't be beat. I was expecting either pay a few hundred dollars or even have to replace my furnace but Jim took care of the problem for a fraction of what I expected. I will definitely be using MountainWest again. They won me over. Customer for life.

Our furnace would not fire up (turn on) so we looked on Angie's list and called them. They came out and told us we needed a new furnace for 3 to 5 thousand dollars. We got a 2nd opinion (for free btw) and ended up replacing the control unit for under $400. After coldest winter in past decade furnace still works fine.

Dear Member, thanks for posting your review. While we always want to give our customers an exceptional experience, it is always helpful to hear when we don't. I have looked into this extensively to see what we might have done wrong and how we can improve in the future. Here are my thoughts. We were originally contacted in mid October to come out and give you an estimate to replace your furnace as you had noticed it was old, 1998, and had problems. That free estimate however was cancelled by you and we never went out. Then about 2 weeks later you called in because the furnace had finally stopped working. The Tech noticed that the control unit was bad, that the unit was 14 years old, and had water damage causing rust and a small crack in the heat exchanger. His recommendation was to fix or replace. Given the age, the amount of repair, and the water damage his suggestion was to replace the unit but we would do whatever you wanted. However for your safety we would require fixing the heat exchanger, as well, not just replace the control unit. I will work with our team to make sure they take the time to communicate more effectively so you know all of your options and can make the best one for you and your family. I also personally apologize that we failed you in this case. We will continue to work hard to be the most professional and trustworthy company out there. If you ever need us, we will be here for you. Thanks again for submitting your review so we can train and become better, Bret Parkinson Owner

Thank you for posting a review. I am glad we were there for you for an emergency on the weekend. I understand the pricing is always a little concern on the weekends because we have to charge a little more to pay our Techs the overtime rate as well as the inefficiencies of running only one or two calls for the day. One way to reduce the chances of this happening is to have your equipment, furnace and ac, tuned up every year. Besides the increase in efficiencies you will see we also notice that the majority of emergency calls we get are by customers who don't maintain their equipment regularly. Thanks, Bret Parkinson Owner

I'd already gone over my furnace in the morning, and found that the pressure sensor was malfunctioning and not starting the pilot. I had to rush to work and didn't have time to get a replacement part, so I bought this coupon from Angie's list for $111 for two hours of service, and left my Girlfriend to call the tech. They showed up around 12:30, and apparently immediately went into a pitch about how new furnaces are cheap, and how it's the right time to get one. The tech looked over my furnace, and used a camera to look at the internals of it. He took some pictures and claimed there was separation on one of the heat exchangers (which I couldn't entirely see). There were no cracks, or anything indicating a serious issue. I asked about the pressure sensor, and if he'd looked at it. He assured me he had, and that it was broken beyond repair and needed to be entirely replaced. I asked if he'd checked if there was pressure reaching the sensor, and he assured me there was, and it had to be the sensors. After talking to him for about twenty minutes, with him saying that if I wanted to repair the entire thing to even get it running, it would cost me at least $500 dollars. To replace the furnace entirely it would cost ~1900 dollars. I told him we'd think about it. I honestly wanted some time to look it over myself. I went to turn in the 111 coupon, but he said that they would not accept it- and that I needed to pay an additional $65 since he didn't perform any 'labor' per the coupon. After he left, I pulled out the hoses in the pressure sensor, blew them out, reattached them, and wallah, pilot started, heater is running. So... 176 dollars down the tube to fix my own furnace.
Description of Work: Basically amounted to paying for a sales pitch.

First of all thank you for posting a review. While it is obviously a very negative review we always want to hear them so we can look at ourselves and our processes and see how we can improve. Beyond that I also want to express to you that I am personally very sorry that you had such a bad experience with our service. I would not want to experience bad service myself and certainly not want you or anyone else to either. In fact, I really want to give you great service so you know you’ve found the right company and never have to worry about who to call in the future. Let me respond a little to your concerns and hopefully have you feel a little better about us. I will break down your complaint into bit size pieces so, hopefully, we can communicate effectively through this format. Your last comment states that you just lost $176 dollars, which would be our $65 service charge as well as the $111 for the Angie’s List deal. Give me a call and I will get you ALL of your money back. I wanted to say that first so hopefully if you read any of this you will read that. Above that you mention you blew out the hoses to the pressure switch and it worked. That is true it will work, for a limited time. But if we did that and walked away then a little while later it stopped working again and it is the middle of the night, your freezing, then you have to take more time off work, you would be REALLY made at us for not being professional enough to know this would happen. Please be assured that your Pressure Switch is bad and will malfunction again. A Pressure Switch is a safety device that activates when there isn’t enough negative pressure to allow the flue gases to go up the vent. He checked this and the pressure is fine. He also checked the amp draw on the Inducer Motor and it is fine as well. The Pressure Switch malfunctioned because it got to excessively hot and simply intermittently malfunctions. I guess on the bad side, when the Tech noticed that the Pressure Switch malfunctioned due to excessive heat and that the filter had been installed incorrectly allowing excess dirt and debris to get by, he inspected the coil to see if it was plugged which would cause the heat to build up in the furnace and begin wreaking havoc on the furnace internally. When checking the coil he did in fact see the coil was partially plugged, thereby confirming his suspicions. Then he went about inspecting the rest of the furnace to see what other damage the overheating might have caused, which is where he saw the separation in the Heat Exchanger. Lastly, he noted that the furnace was not installed up to code. Code requires that the furnace be at least 30” away from the wall. Your unit is only 8” away from the wall. With all that being said he gave two options to resolve the issues. To fix the current unit, which would have to include bringing it up to code because as professionals if we touch it we are legally liable for it or replace it. Either way is fine with us. We just wanted to give some options so you could make the best decision for yourself. Finally, in regards to using the coupon it is very specific that it can only be used for labor and that was confirmed by us when the service call was scheduled. But don’t forget to give me a call and I will get you ALL of your money back. Thanks for allowing me an opportunity to shed some light on this so hopefully you feel a little bit better about us and see that we did try to do the right thing. Again I am personally sorry this was not a good experience for you. Thanks, Bret Parkinson Owner

Wonderful. they arrived at my house at 7 AM so I would not be late for work. Did a walk through, played with my dogs and made sure they had my phone numbers in case anything went wrong. They called me around 1 so I could meet the owner of the company to sign papers and go over all the work that had been done. The furnace was not on my list to replace, but I had a question about it and the guy checked it for me and found I had a small gas leak. So the company worked with me to finance the work needed and I had everything replaced. They also placed in air conditioning coils so I can put in central air later on. In fact, I am calling them today to see if they can come and look at my gas fireplace... P.Hansen SLC

I apologize that I can not remember the names of the professionals that came to my house. The AC&R service technician was punctual and professional. He was very knowledgeable and was able to fix the humidifier which was wired wrong to begin with. He checked the overall furnace system and identified a pump that will require replacement sometime in the future but not right away. I mentioned that I wanted to install an RO system in the house. Mountainwest had a master plumber on staff and managed to have him visit the same day and install the RO system. He also adjusted the existing water softener settings correctly so I now have soft water in the house. The plumber was very helpful and professional.

I had previously used Mountainwest to service both my furnace and air conditioner, and they had done an excellent job. Based on that, I contacted them for an estimate to replace my 33-year-old furnace. They didn't try to sell me a more expensive furnace, although I ended up buying a higher end furnace. They showed up on time and installed the furnace quickly, cleaning up after themselves. The installers were polite, friendly, and took the time to explain the new furnace system to me. I love the new furnace, and it has worked perfectly since installation. I highly recommend Mountainwest for HVAC needs, and plan to continue to use them in the future.

Got home at 6:00 pm to a warm house, but slowly began to notice the house cooling. When I took a look at the furnace I saw that the pilot light had gone out. I called Thompson and Sons, who said there was a flat $99 fee to come out and diagnose, with repair parts costing extra. Fortunately I had an Angie's List coupon for a $49 service fee, which they said they would honer (time of day making no difference). He said they would contact the service technician who would give me a call. This was at 7:00. Two hours later I called back to get an estimated time of arrival, and I was told he was on his way. Another two hours later, I called again to find out what was going on. I have two parrots and was worried about their health as the low was around 20 degrees that night. I was told that they wouldn't be able to give me any idea about when the technician would arrive, but that he would call when he was on his way. An hour later I got a knock on my door from a very nice young man. He said that he had stopped by once already that night and the phone number he had for us was wrong. He had the name and number of the previous home owner, which I had corrected every time I called dispatch. This wasn't his fault, however, and he got down to business right away. He told me what he was doing as he did it, explaining the possible causes of the pilot light going out. It didn't take him long to find the culprit, which thankfully didn't cost me any money in repairs. He did a great job and was a really friendly, helpful guy. I would recommend them in spite of the mix up with dispatch, as the repairman did a wonderful job.

Very nice guy who came out. He was prompt, professional and very nice. He talked to me before doing anything, but I was stupid and didn't ask for the cost, because I knew the parts were so inexpensive. I nearly chocked when I got the bill. The parts couldn't have been over $100 (I checked online), but I was stuck with an $800 bill. As nice as they are, I will not use this company again due to the outrageous price. One good thing, however, that I really appreciated is that they called back two weeks later to honor the $35 Angies List coupon and ran a credit on my card. I appreciated that very much. They did that on their own accord and that was an incredible gesture. It just wan't good enough to make up for the price I was charged.
Description of Work: Overheat switch replacement, asked to purchase a spare igniter switch, but they wouldn't leave one so he had to install a new one. Also said that the "door closed" switch had a short, but didn't have part so he just wired it to work without it.

Dear member, thank you for posting a review. While it is an overall negative review I still appreciate your comments as it allows me to look into our company. It took me a couple hours but I was able to find your account, and yes I understand why you wrote this under a different last name and because of that I won't bother you with a phone call to respect that. First of all let me say it personally saddens me to hear that we have lost you as a customer but I can certainly understand your feelings. There are a couple things I would like you to consider when ultimately deciding whether or not you will ever allow us to serve you again. The amount you pay not only includes the cost of the part and labor but also must cover the other costs to run a service company. We have to pay for all this fuel, insurance (Workers Comp, Liability, Auto, & Unemployment), rent, taxes, etc... We do everything in our power to keep our expenses as low as possible to keep our prices as low as possible and still be here for you when you need us. In the end we are priced to make about 5% profit. Thanks, Bret Parkinson Owner

We saw Angie's list big deal on a furnace tune up and purchased it. Mountain West arrived on time and performed the furnace tune up. They did a good job and charged the quoted price. They then told my wife that the furnace filter was getting clogged up with insulation that was coming into the ducts from the attic. They told her that the ducts needed cleaning. She agreed to this at a cost of $400. They performed the service. A few months later I had to open up the cover to the air return and found insulation in several places. So it seems the money was wasted. It also seems that they use the Angie's big deal to get their foot in the door and use it to up sell their services.

Dear member, thanks for posting a review. Your review is mixed so let me speak to both sides of it. First I will let the Tech know you felt he did a good job. As far as the duct cleaning goes I will call you and have a Technician come back out to inspect your duct cleaning. If it is not done properly we will redo do it at no charge to you of course. However, I am a little concerned that maybe you have some problems with your duct work. It sounds like maybe you have a joint that came undone or something. In which case we should fix that first then redo the duct cleaning. Again we would redo the duct cleaning at no charge to you. Lastly, you mentioned that you felf maybe we were just using the Tune Up to get into your home so we can upsell. I can certainly understand your feelings and admittedly we will bring things to your attention that we feel could be a current or future issue. But in the end they are just suggestions. We know ultimately you will more than likely just call us anyway if and when they actually become a problem. Thanks, Bret Parkinson Owner

MountainWest went above and beyond for us. We had initially called them for a routine furnace cleaning using an Angie's List "coupon" and they were very easy to work with as far as scheduling and email correspondence. The service repairman cleaned our furnace and left, but immediately afterward we noticed our furnace was not performing. Something had gone wrong, either by coincidence or as a result of something done during cleaning. We called MountainWest and the repairman came back right away to discover that a part of the main circuit board had given up the ghost. We were skeptical that it was entirely a coincidence (although it's possible, it just seemed unlikely), and as a result MountainWest footed the bill for the repairs--$300 for the part that needed replacing! I think what really speaks volumes about their commitment to service and making sure things are right, though, is that our repairman stayed quite late on the day of the incident to make a temporary fix to the furnace that would give us heat through the night (the needed replacement part was not available until the next day). So in other words, he spent several hours making a temporary fix for us, knowing full well that he would have to do most of it again the next day with a new part--just so we would be comfortable and have a heated home. My wife and I were thoroughly impressed! The temporary repair worked fine, and the full replacement part has been working for several weeks. We are very pleased we chose MountainWest.
Description of Work: Full furnace (Trane XB90) cleaning and additional repairs on the main circuit board.

Dear member, thanks for posting a review. I am always glad to see when we go way above and beyond for people. These situations are always difficult for us. Because, on one hand, we know that we would never do anything deliberate to cause something to not work so therefore we just think it has to be coincedence. But on the other hand, we look at it from the customers perspective and how we would feel if this happend to us. So in the end we always side with the customers perspective. I am happy to hear you appreciated our above and beyond customer service. Jared will be happy to know that you truly appreciated it as well. Thanks, Bret Parkinson Owner

No complaints. I will recommend them to my landlord, friends, and coworkers.
Description of Work: I called this business on Friday afternoon after I found out that my new dryer could not be installed safely by the Best Buy delivery guys. The whole in the wall was not set up correctly to vent to the outside of the house I am renting. Randy called me Friday night to ask if he could stop by Saturday morning because he had other customers with more pressing needs (no heat!) This was perfectly fine with me. Randy showed up that morning about 5 minutes ahead of schedule, diagnosed the problem and fixed it in less than an hour. He was pleasant and told me I was going to love my new washer and dryer because he had the same set.

The staff at this company was very friendly and persistent in setting up the appointment for us. The technician arrived on time and was friendly and professional. He explained what he was going to do, and said he would let me know how it went. He put his Carbon Monoxide (CM) detector on a heating vent on the second level to check on any level's that could be detected. He then went downstairs to the furnace room to continue his work. He called me down a few minutes later and he had my furnace humidifier taken apart and was using the CM detector there. He had bad news. He showed me the detector was registering a small amount of CM at a rate of 4 on the monitor. I believe it indicated a rate of 7 at its highest. I asked him what that meant, and he said that I must have small crack in the heat exchanger and it would have to be replaced, or the furnace would have to be replaced. He quoted me a price for the replacement of the heat exchanger and labor. He said the labor would be significant as you have to take much of the furnace apart. I do not have my quote in front of me, though it was in the $1400.00 range. He also gave me quotes on the price of new furnace depending on its efficiency level. Again without the bill I recall it was in the range of $2800 to $3200, and that amount could be reduced by rebates. I did not take the news well, as with Christmas and other expenses coming up we were not prepared for such an expense. The technician could tell I was upset and was apologetic. I explained I was not taking it out on him, it was just not a good time. He also explained that he had to shut our furnace down as per industry and company procedure. After he shut our furnace down he explained the options for repair and replacement of the furnace. The repair would take longer as the part would have to be ordered, and would take a while. He handed me the estimate paperwork for both repair and replacement and apologized again. I explained that my wife and I needed to discuss what to do, especially the financial ramifications. We were very concerned about the furnace and financial issues that came along with it. I then called a contractor friend and explained our circumstances. The contractor recommended I get a second opinion. He recommended a heating and A/C contractor he uses on his jobs. I called the gentlemen and he said that he could be at our place at 8:30 PM that night. He asked what type of brand and model of furnace I had and I gave him the information. He explained that the furnace was the brand that he sold, and had was most familiar with. The second opinion heating and A/C contractor arrived at our home at 8:30 PM. He restarted the furnace. He took his CM detector to the same vent used by the first gentleman, and did not get a reading. He then went down to the furnace room and started inspecting the furnace. He said he could not find a crack in the heat exchanger. He also explained that my type of furnace was extremely durable, and he rarely had ever seen a heat exchanger crack in this model. He also explained that there was 20 year warranty on the heat exchanger for this unit, so if it was cracked it would be replaced and I would have to pay for the labor charge. Luckily he said he could find nothing wrong with our furnace, and left the furnace operating. He also said with regular maintenece my furnace should last a long while. He also explained to be wary of getting a new furnace based on a higher efficiency ,as the way he explained the payback period, it would take a long time to recover the costs. I am grateful I got the second opinion. Please let me know if you have any questions.
Description of Work: I originally had this company come out to help me with a problem with my A/C. During that time they were offering a discounted special for a furnace tune up. The technician was the same one that helped me with my A/C on a previous service call. He was friendly and professional.

They tuned up my furnace. As far as I know, they did a fine job. I was disappointed, though, that they did not replace the filter - they just told me what size to go buy and then I had to go buy it - an errand that I had been hoping to avoid by hiring them.

The technician was prompt, friendly, and very informative. He explained the problem and the repair needed. The replacement part was quickly ordered and installed within a few days. We are happy to have a working furnace.
Description of Work: I called for a routine inspection. The furnace had been touchy last winter, so I was not surprised when a problem was found. A part was ordered quickly, and the repair was made.
