The quality of the painting was very good, the painters always cleaned up, and checked with us at the end of the day. The signed contract had been emailed to the company more than a week prior to the beginning of the job, as well as a copy of the building rendering & specific colors. A copy of the rendering & paint color chart was provided directly to the estimator on the day of estimation to help expedite the process. Concerns: Five Star's project manager did not appear to be organized: he had no paperwork upon arrival to the job site, no knowledge of the specific colors to be used, the plan nor had the paint which caused delays. The owner was contacted on several occasions due to concerns, and I was assured everything would be addressed. Overall, we were satisfied with the project and would recommend this company.
Description of Work: Five Star painted the exterior of our commercial building using specific colors per a rendering provided. The building is a metal building built in 1980's. They power washed the entire building prior to painting.

The gentlemen that showed up were very professional and pleasant. Only one spoke English and it was uncomfortable with them carrying on conversations in my home that I could not understand. I had no idea what they were saying about me or my home or the job. It was also difficult to give them direction or let them know my wishes because of the language barrier. I am not happy with the quality of their work - mostly the lack of attention to detail. I had to do lots of touch ups myself, and am still finding places that need work - such as the edges of the door jambs that they didn't paint!. After they left I went around the room marking with blue tape spots that needed to be fixed. Someone returned the following day, but still missed a couple spots that were marked. (I had to run out on an emergency while they were here and left my husband to supervise while I was out - which was a mistake - I should have sent my husband to the vet instead.) The quality of the new texture on the ceiling is terrible - to the point my husband said we'll probably have to have it re-done (at a greater expense!) You can now see waves in the ceiling and dimples where nails are that were previously hidden by popcorn. I was under the impression that they would apply a texture to hide all of that - what I approved is not exactly what happened - they didn't texture it as much as the sample I was shown. You really can't notice until you are lying in bed looking straight up then it's very evident they did a bad job. If you need a simple paint job with only one color on a wall and ceiling, then they would be good. They just don't know how to meet two colors where the wall meets the base board or the ceiling.
Description of Work: Remove popcorn from two bedroom ceilings. Paint one bedroom.

We are sorry to hear this customer was not happy. We did a walk through at the end, and she stated she was "extremely happy" with the work. We had no indication that she was not completely happy. I followed up on this, and it sounds like my painter went above and beyond at the customer request. Fixed a crack in the wall that was not part of the quote, painted a door at her request which was not paid for, and did all they were ask to do. Its true their primary language was Spanish, but they spoke perfect English to the customer, which is how they received direction to do the extra work. We will always do all we can to assure complete satisfaction. My painters are very skilled, and know exactly how to do texturing and two tone painting, and I have had numerous customers rant and rave about the great quality provided by this crew specifically. We are always happy to make it right if something is wrong, but we had no idea there were any concerns on this job.

We were preparing to move into a new house and needed the kids bedrooms upstairs repainted. Movers were coming Saturday so we needed it done by Thursday, Friday at the latest. JP came by shortly after we asked for the estimate (kudo's on speed and punctuality). He gave us what we thought was a reasonable price, and said he could get someone out there Wednesday or Thursday and it would take two days due to the texturing. After getting in the other competitive quotes that day, we called back to tell them they got the job (left a voice mail). When we got the call back with the scheduling folks, we were told soonest was Thursday. No problem, we thought. A little tight (fumes and all) but we figured we could make it work. Met with Gema, the coordinator, and one of the painters, Tomas, in the morning (also right on time). Ran through the work expected, then left for my own job. Late that afternoon my wife visited the new house and discovered there was only one painter--the other had called in sick--and she didn't think a lot had been done, that a lot of work was left. I swung by to see myself and found one room was mostly done but that was it. When I asked Tomas if he thought this could be done by tomorrow, he assured me it would be. I had my doubts but I gave him the benefit of the doubt. Fast forward to the end of the next day, the second room was almost done and the third room still had some wallpaper on it. Not good. Movers were coming 7AM in the morning. I called Gema and explained how we'd chosen them because of the time line they said they could do it in. I get things come up, and I'd just have to deal with it (stuff happens), but I was told by two different people it could be done in two days and now it was going into the third day. I wanted some assurances that the job would be done. She committed to putting more bodies on the job if it didn't look like it would be done by Saturday. Come Saturday evening and the texturing was still drying--which isn't something you can throw more bodies at. So still not done. While the job eventually took just over 3 days (and the reason why I'm giving them a B overall), that is the only bad mark they have. Tomas came in Sunday morning, on time, and completed the work. He and his buddy did an excellent job. Everyone was on time, very friendly and professional. I just wished they were more accurate in their estimations. Moving is stressful in general and this didn't help. I also wish Angie's List had an "accuracy" rating as dinging them on punctual is misleading but the only category that is applicable.

We are sorry that the job took longer then expected. The weather did not do us any favors during the month of May, and unfortunately slowed down the drying process much to our dismay. We are glad the the ending project turned out as expected and that you were very happy with the end product.

I was satisfied with most of their work, however I was very disappointed with the touch up work they did in our bathroom. They had to have the color matched because our original paint had dried up. JP, who had come to our house and given me a quote, assured me that they would paint a larger swath of color when doing touch ups in order to avoid any spotty looking walls. In fact, he told me this completely unprompted by me and even used it to explain why the cost was so high to touch up paint (again, unprompted by me). But this is not how the painters did the touch up work. In most cases it didn't matter because we had the exact same color and it matched great. But in the master bathroom, where they had to match the color, it was very noticeably spotty. When the project manager came on site after the job was done to collect payment, I showed him and asked him about it. He called JP (his son) and they said it would be an extra cost to fix it. I was unhappy about that because it feels dishonest to me, considering JP told me they would paint big sections of the wall to avoid just that. They did give me the small pint of paint for free in order to make amends. But I still felt that the workmanship didn't represent their company well. So I called JP the next business day to see if they could make it right. He again insisted it would be an additional cost. So in conclusion, I was happy with most of their work, but I would think twice before having them do any touch up work around your home. The final result is not pretty.

There seems to be a lot of confusion on this job and I would like to explain. First, we are in agreement that this job does not look as good as our finished product in a normal case, and we warned that would be the case before we started. When JP did the quote, he knew it was our policy to NOT do touch ups around the house on walls, as paint never matches. This is why the discussion of what the real cost should be ensued during the estimate. The homeowner insisted that they had paint that matched and it would be ok. JP (my estimator) finally got talked into just doing touch ups with their paint, and only charged $160 for much of the house. There was an additional charge if we had to buy the paint. We did end up buying the paint as the homeowners paint was dried in the can, but with my project manager being a new employee (JP's father), he didn't even charge them for that matching effort. So they got all the touch ups, including us matching the paint (as good as technically possible), for $160, which included us buying the paint. Not surprising, the paint was not a perfect match, as it never is, and why we NEVER agree to do this type of work. But somehow due to home owners budget constraints, we got talked into trying. When it didn't match, we went back to the original discussion of painting complete walls throughout the house as needed, which obviously was going to be more than $160, which the homeowner did not want to pay. We would be more than happy to go back and do this job correctly, but painting much of the house obviously would be more than the agreed upon touch up price of $160 labor and material. Once again, I have visited with my estimator, and reminded him to never agree to do "touch ups" on the center of a wall. We will do all we can to save the homeowner money, but staying in the parameters of doing the job correctly going forward.

Excellent. Very professional at all points in the project. It was a real pleasure dealing with them. The paint job turned out really nice and we were very happy. Because we had lead paint, they had to add several steps (EPA mandated) that added to the cost. Therefore, I did not give a rating on cost. I have already passed the name and contact info on to my next door neighbor and my daughter.

The estimator and point of contact at the company were professional. When it came time to start the job, the painter did not show up for the first two days of the job. The company then sent out a large crew to do the job in one day. While the speed was nice, the quality of the paint job was fair at the least. They were on a time schedule so they were forced to do it too quickly and some of the quality was lost. I could have painted it better if I had the time. While this may have been a one time scenario, and I understand some things are out of their control, I would use a different service in the future.

We try to be as professional at all phases of the job as we possibly can. I don't recall why we were delayed, this job was a while ago. I am pleased that we were able to react with a larger crew to still try to hit the customer deadline, but in no case should quality ever be compromised, even if we strive to stay on schedule. We would be more than happy to do any touch ups, should there be any, if you would like to give us a call. We do all in our power to assure complete customer satisfaction.

It was great service. I was able to get an appointment right away. The technician was very nice and came out right away. They were fine with the direction on getting edges cleaned up. The price did end up being twice what they quoted me. They got paint all over the guest bathroom carpets and flipped it over to hide from me.

We are really sorry to hear that the customer was not completely satisfied, and had we known would have made every effort to correct any issues. This job was completed last August, and this is the first we have heard that there was any concern at all with this review coming out in March. With regards to the price, the original bid was $500, based on the expected number of coats required. The customer chose a color requiring extra coats in two of the three rooms, which we added an additional $120 combined for both rooms. The customer also ask that we upgrade to a different brand of Sherwin Williams paint and agreed to pay an additional $80 for the upgrade at her request. This was agreed to before the change was made. The total went from $500 original bid, to $700, all agreed upon before the start of the job, based on the customers decisions. It was not double, and there were customer requested changes which added to the cost. With regards to the bathroom mats, we do not like that happening, and there is no excuse if I had a painter do that. We should have either cleaned the mats, or replaced them. Again, we didn't know about this till now.

This was our second project with Five Star. Previously they painted the exterior. The crew arrived on time. The project mgr reviewed The work they were going to perform. I'm sure glad they stripped the wallpaper. The one wall had a vaulted ceiling and the paper had been on forever. The texturing looks great!!! They cleaned up really well. The project was completed in two days as planned. We are very pleased with their work and will use them again.

We had this house on the market to sell. Everything was great! They were really fast too, I believe it only took them 2 days to paint the whole house which was a 3b/2bth, living, office, kitchen, hallway and entry. I would have rated 5 Star Painting an overall "A" but they forgot to paint the master bedrooms baseboards but it's my fault that I didn't catch it during the final walk through, other than that, everything was fine and the house looked amazing! We have been member of Angie's List for over 5 years and had been using companies from their list for various work needed for our home. We had never had such bad experience with any contractor as this company. Our front wooden door needed restaining as the old paint faded away. I expected that to do proper job one has to sand the door and take the old paint out before applying a new coat. But when I met the sales person on 10/30/14, she assured me that door does not need sanding, they will apply the new stain over the old stain as the type of material they use does not need sanding. I was surprised but thought they must have come up with a new product that will have this effect. I asked her if we could see some color samples so that we can decide what color we would like to have. She said they will bring the colors on the day of the job and will show us all colors by applying on the door. On Nov.7, Friday, painter with his supervisor showed up at 8:00 in the morning and when I asked them to show us color chart so that we can select the color, first they said they did not have it as they left it in another job. But when we insisted on seeing some selections they suddenly found a color chart in their van but came with three open cans of stains which looked like left over from another job and tried to convince us the door will look good with any of those three stains. We finally decided on one of those stains and they started working. The painter never sanded any portion of the door, started applying the stain with brush right away. After couple of hours he told me that he would leave the stain to dry and come back on Monday, 11/10. In the mean time the stain dried and I could see the stain soaked up the areas of the wood grain and it looked like those area were never stained. It looked quite bad half of our door is quite grainy which gives the door character. When the worker came back on Monday I showed him the discrepancy in the look and asked him to fix it as the door did not look good. Then I heard him doing some sanding for a little while and applying the stain again. But it did not solve the problem. So he called the supervisor and I showed him the problem He said that he has to bring his supervisor to show the problem as he does not know how to fix it. Next day passed I did not hear from any one. On Wednesday I called the sales lady, could not get to her, so I called their office. The lady at the desk told me that she would contact the supervisor and ask him to contact me. After an hour a new gentleman showed up who claimed that he was the supervisor who was supposed to come to see the door. He looked at the door and first he said he could not find any problem and probably the problem was with my `expectation' . I told him my expectation was just normal, I needed to see the end result of the job to be proper and the door look good. He then said that the door was damaged by the sunlight as it was the lower portion and when I pointed out sun cannot hit the door as it seats way back in the porch and there is a big tree right in front of the porch, he changed his excuse to say that the door has weathered, so it cannot be stained evenly. Finally he said that they have invested enough time and material without any return so far, so he will decide whether they wanted to pursue with the job. I pointed out they did not spent a dime on the material as they used left over material from another job (which definitely the other customer paid for it). He went back and sent me an email saying that they wanted to quit as they had done the job properly and the reason the door looked that way for the same reason he sited before. He would settle for half of the quoted price. I am sorry to say these people were extremely unprofessional and inefficient. I have never heard any one will try to stain a wooden stained door without first taking out the existing stain ( I have stained doors before), but when they said that they use a type of stain that can be applied over the existing stain, I believed them. But the stain they were using is no different from the normal stains you get in home improvement stores. This quality of contractors should not be Angie's list. We wasted lots of valuable time and some money for their sub standard job. Looked like they were more concerned with their profit than providing quality service.

We are really sorry this customer feels this way. We have restored and re-stained many front doors, with remarkable results. At the time of the estimate, it was offered to completely strip the door and re-stain but the customer did not want to spend that much money to repair his door. We offered a gel stain solution at a cheaper cost, which was all he wanted to spend. However, sometimes when a door gets so worn, it is almost impossible to make an old door look completely new again. That is why there is a market for new and replacement doors. After a few interactions with this customer, as my employees stated, it became obvious that we would never meet the expectations of the customer, as NEW was just not going to happen due to the extreme wear on this front door. We did this job at a loss and spent extra time in an effort to satisfy this customer which was fine, . But in the end we felt it was in the best interest of the customer and our business to allow him to continue shopping, as we felt we were never going to arrive at the same place.

Our front door hadn't been re-stained in nearly 15 years and was in serious need of some attention. It looks so much better now, like a brand new door! It even made me like our brass door handles again.
Description of Work: EXTERIOR- Re-stained our front door.

Larry came out to discuss our painting needs. He was prompt and professional. He sent us our painting quote and after a few questions and changes from us we finalized our contract. We could have used some additional guidance regarding the differant types of paint (flat, semi gloss, etc.)and colors. We went to Sherwin Williams and picked out our colors but it is hard to tell under the store lights what they will look like in our house. We brought home swatches and held them up but still could have used affirmation from a professional that these would be okay (ceiling and trim). There was some confusion regarding the date they were to start and a wallpaper border they were going to put up in our laundry room, but that was quickly resolved. Our painters Maria and Rodrigo along with their supervisor JP came out on day and time we schedued and after reviewing the work to be done JP left. Maria and Rodrigo were very hard workers and really seemed very experienced. It took 2+ days for the work to be completed and overall we were very pleased with the outcome. Some of the walls needed cracks repaired and while that was done the cracks are still slightly noticeable. We had stripes on one wall. We were pleased how it looked but upon further inspection noticed that some of the stripes bled into each other at the bottom of the wall. It is not horrible and might not be noticeable to some but we would like to get it corrected if possible. A stair railing was painted but after it dryed it could have used 2 coats of paint instead of one. JP came out shortly after Maria and Rodrigo left and we finalized our job (paid). At that time the paint was still not totally dry and we had been told by Maria and Rodrigo that it might take up to 10 days to fully dry so we should try to keep from putting furniture against it or hanging pictures. Overall they did a very good job. Their pricing was slightly higher than others but we based our decision on their overall rating and reviews with Angies. I would use them again and I would recommend them to others.
