The first job literally took 7 or 8 hours. A couple of hours of sourcing the outlet problem, then a couple more to actually fix it (thank you, whoever did the bathroom addition, for taking shortcuts that turned out to be expensive and confusing for us). Then the other items on the list, the dryer thing was more complicated than expected, all of it required a couple of trips to get parts, etc etc. The clock just ticked away and I was sweating big time because we were looking at many hundreds of dollars by this point. Thankfully he took pity on me (and was not the fastest worker, so I would have been miffed if he hadn't done this) and only charged me for 4 hours. I tipped him well and that made up for what he wouldn't get paid by the company for reducing the hours he charged me. Their hourly prices are a bit high anyway, especially for a big job like this where it takes a ton of time to not actually do a whole lot. And it wasn't something they could quote out because so much of it was just diagnosis. Anyway, I was satisfied with that, ultimately, and appreciated the guy letting me hang around and learn some stuff. I'm a DIY n*** like that and learned a lot, and I think he was amused by a woman being so interested in all of it. :) And then one day, the power in our garage wasn't working. So I had them out again. This time, the area was isolated and it only took an hour and a half to find/correct the problem. The guy gave me a good solution for fixing it that didn't cost a ton and we did that. Much less painful than the first visit and yet another electricity mystery in our old house solved. Overall, I was happy with Dempsey, but as I said, i do feel like they are a bit expensive. I hired them before I had Angie's List, and next time I need an electrician, I'll probably see if I can do better price-wise with a smaller company, but I did feel like the guys who came out were hard working and cared about the job. It's really more of a price issue. I think hiring "an electrician" vs. hiring a company that contracts out electricians is probably a more economical route with no middle man to pay, but with a bigger crew, I was able to get someone out quickly both times, which has some value.
Description of Work: We have an 1955 rancher with some additions, which means we had some "old house charm" in the form of outlets that didn't work and circuits that didn't make sense and whatnot. As a result, we've had Dempsey out twice to solve some problems. First was an outlet that was flipping the circuit breaker every time we plugged something in. We also had a 3 prong dryer outlet and needed 4 prong, and we had an outlet box that was broken and needed to be replaced entirely. Second call was because one of our circuits just completely quit working one day and we couldn't figure out why.

One electrician came out in the morning. He spent 3 hours trying to find where the GFI reset button was and/or trace the lines. He called in a more experienced electrician to help. They wasted a lot of time wandering around the house together (we have a large house) because they did not have walkie talkies, so they were unable to communicate with each other. At the end of the day, they theorized that there was a junction box behind the dry wall. They insisted that our bathroom had been renovated and that we could not have ever used these plugs in the past. Since I had invested $900 to have them trace the line, I eventually had them come back to complete the work. The office sent a supervisor with the more experienced electrician. They arrived an hour late. Again, they did not have walkie talkies. These guys spent 2+ hours retracing the lines. Eventually they cut into the wall and found nothing. The final explanation was that the plugs had never worked and I needed a new dedicated circuit. [I was not charged for the retracing.] Unbelievably, I agreed to have them put in the new line. The following Monday, they arrived a hour late (after someone in the office said they'd arrive "momentarily"). When they arrived, they said they could not complete the work because of the weather. We rescheduled for the following day. They said they'd be there at 8:30, they arrived at 9:15. My housekeeper felt uncomfortable with them in the house, so we canceled. The office was very understanding.

I thought they were a little expensive, but, I know electricians are. The only major complaint I had about the work was the fact that after the service was provided one of the existing light circuit no longer functions. I used to be able to turn on my garage light from my house and now I can not do that.

I had issues with the technician who came out this time, and he was unwilling/unable to give me a quote when he came out. One of their service managers, Wesley, called back after I had submitted a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. He apologized, refunded my money from the initial service call, and sent a supervisor out to give me the quote that I originally requested, without issue. I am considering using their service again.

Dempsey Electric offers free no obligation estimates to all of our customers who request quotable service. Do to the high volume of estimate requests we schedule the estimates as efficiently as possible. Unfortunately an exact time is difficult considering the expansive service area we cover and the amount of free estimates we perform.

I did not hire Dempsey to do the work because they could not give me any idea of how much money I would be spending, i.e., would it be a simple job for a few hundred dollars or major electrical upgrade costing thousand$$!
Description of Work: Requested service tech to come to house, look at existing electrical panel, evaluate if existing service panel could add breaker and circuit for 240AC electric water heater or if new service panel would be required or if increasing service from 150 amp to 200 amp would be required. Appointment was scheduled, but when service tech telephoned to discuss, he said to call back to the office and request an estimator come out first. His concern was he would show up w/o the materials he would need for the job and I would waste a bunch of money. I called the office to request an estimator, however I was told they did not send out an estimator for that type of request. Their only option was to send out a service tech and he would do the job and charge by the hour until completed.

Very, very well. The young man doing the installation was on time, very polite, and got right to work. He found the problem, reviewed the options with me, and then went to get the replacement lamp. He rewired the lead cables, and made sure the light worked. He then cleaned up the yard of the various pieces of metal and wiring, and hauled them off. Very good work.

They didn't ground the box and when they connected the wires outside the house they wrapped them together and with electrical tape. It was storming in the middle of that night and all the lights went dim. I couldn't see that anything was wrong because it was on a blind side of my house. My neighbor saw that the house was on fire and he called the fire department. The wires caught on fire and were flying around and I call the electric company to have the wires reconnected and re-grounded.

DEMPSEY ELECTRIC QUOTED THIS CUSTOMER A PRICE TO UPGRADE HER METER LOOP AND SERVICE AS WELL AS REPLACE AN INTERIOR SUB-PANEL THAT WAS IMPROPERLY INSTALLED BY SOMEONE ELSE. SHE ACCEPTED THE PROPOSAL AND WORK WAS COMPLETED. WE RESPONDED TO A NO-CHARGE WARRANTY CALL TO ADD AN ADDITIONAL GROUND WIRE THAT WAS OVER LOOKED ON THE ORIGINAL JOB. THE CONNECTION PROBLEM HAPPENED MONTHS LATER AND WAS A RESULT OF NO PERMANENT CONNECTIONS MADE BY THE POWER COMPANY/PROVIDER AT THE POINT WHERE THE CUSTOMER'S SERVICE DROPS MEET THE POWER COMPANY'S WIRES. THE WIRING THAT CAUGHT FIRE WAS THE POWER COMPANY'S SERVICE DROP AND THEIR RESPONSIBILITY. THIS CONNECTION IS MADE BY THE POWER COMPANY AND NOT BY THE ELECTRICAL CONTRACTOR. DEMPSEY ELECTRIC MADE TEMPORARY CONNECTIONS BETWEEN THE POWER COMPANY'S AND CUSTOMER'S WIRING. THIS WAS A TEMPORARY CONNECTION ONLY AND WAS DONE TO PROVIDE CUSTOMER POWER WHILE WAITING ON THE POWER COMPANY TO PROVIDE PERMANENT CONNECTIONS. IT IS THE CUSTOMER'S RESPONSIBILITY TO CONTACT HIS/HER SERVICE PROVIDER AS THEY WILL NOT DEAL WITH THE ELECTRICAL CONTRACTOR. THIS HAPPENED MONTHS AFTER THE JOB WAS COMPLETE AND DURING A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM. WE WERE NOT CONTACTED AT THE TIME OF THE PROBLEM EVEN THOUGH WE ARE A 24 HOUR SERVICE COMPANY. UPON HEARING OF THIS COMPLAINT, WE HAVE CONTACTED THE CUSTOMER WHO WILL NOT RESCIND HER COMPLAINT EVEN AFTER EXPLANATION. WE ARE VERY SORRY FOR THE CUSTOMER'S DISSATISFACTION BUT THE PROBLEM WAS NOT CAUSED BY DEMPSEY ELECTRIC'S WORK.

When I called this company I was impressed with the knowledge of the technician taking my call. They were able to schedule a time right away to do my job. The electrician that came out did a great job. Both fans work beautifully. These fans were installed where lights previously existed. Fortunately my home had light boxes that supported a ceiling fan so that did not have to be added. The technician was able to install a switch on the wall that controlled both the fan and the light from the wall. I did buy this myself but the technician told me exactly what to buy. They also had a 10% off coupon in the back of the yellow pages. The technician was friendly, courteous and trustworthy. Great job!

This job wasn't exactly wiring the space station but the electrician did not come with all the parts that were needed. I had turned down a $475 turnkey bid from ARS because it seemed too high for such a simple job. I ended up paying much more for an hourly job where the guy apparently had no clue what he was doing. He had to leave and go to Home Depot to get parts. I had used Dempsey before to install ceiling fans and such and had excellent experience with them. They were the installation contractor for EXPO at that time. That may be the limit of their ability. My rating is based on their performance in my back yard project. Since I have found another excellent contractor from Angie's list, I would not call Dempsey again.
Description of Work: Ran a new electrical line from bedroom to back yard for fountain and outside lights. GFI was installed without cover and repeatedly shorted out when it got wet. Came back and installed cover but it would still short out when it got wet since it was installed too low to the ground. Finally called someone else who moved the GFI and my lights now work fine.

Dempsey was prompt in responding to my request for service. I called at 9 AM and was given a Noon to 3 window. The electrician arrived at 12:30 and completed the work by 5:30. He was polite, knowledgeable, kept me informed on what he was finding and offered options as well as money saving suggestions. He indicated that there was a coupon for 10% off in the yellow pages, and suggested that I purchase my own GFIC recepticals to save money. I will definitely use their service again.
