"I paid for a maintenance contract w these people then called them for repair work. They misdiagnosed the problem three times then left the battery and parts of my very expensive standby generator out on the ground and in the weather. Then they admitted they were not even authorized to do warranty work on a cooler generator. Now with my maintenance contract, and my money, they have not contracted out the work, will not return my calls, my texts or my emails"

"This was a fairly large and expensive piece of necessary home maintenance. My home is now 25 years old, and I am the original owner. My main circuit breaker had been "acting up" recently; that is, it randomly failed (opened) as the day proceeded and the temperature rose. It is housed along with all of my other circuit breakers in my main breaker box, which is directly exposed to the early afternoon sun in the late spring and early fall months. Concerned, I did a bit of research online to discover my box likely had reached end-of-life. I called 2 contractors for estimates, and chose West Houston Electric to replace the box. In addition, my original ground rod was disconnected from my home's main grounding lead, which West Houston found when they inspected my box to give me a bid. I was told the original rod was likely galvanized metal provided by the builder, and that it had likely deteriorated significantly over the 25-year life of my house. They also suggested a "whole home" surge protector to minimize the effect of voltage surges that occur, the tech said, on a daily basis. These surges, it was claimed, have a deteriorating effect on any electric devices in my house, especially on "high tech" equipment that utilized chip technology. Both bidding contractors made this claim. I must say I haven't experienced any failures in chip-based technologies in my home. But, my AC compressor, when it comes on, comes on "hard." It must draw a lot of amperage when it cycles on, and it will do so often in the summer months. (I have a "start switch" on it to minimize the abruptness of its operation, but I often wonder what it draws as it is a very loud start.) I chose West Houston Electric to do the work because their competitor found almost $6,000 worth of work to do. To their credit, the tech broke that down to "must haves," "should haves," and "nice to haves." Even so, their bid for the "must haves," the work West Houston performed, was higher. The tech was on time for the scheduled work and seemed quite knowledgeable and likable. The owner had spoken to me on the phone, and came by twice during the work to check on progress. This is a relatively long procedure, by the way. It takes about 4-5 hours start to finish, and your power will be out most of that time. The tech found one more issue that seemed prudent to address regarding a GIF breaker for my pool pump, The competing contractor had suggested that as well. Though the risk is low that a pump failure might cause electricity to flow into my pool, it was the sort of risk that entailed mortality on the down side--that circuit is 220v. It the pump failed, and it caused current to flow into the pool, and anyone was in it, it would be "curtains." If this were to occur, I could not live with myself having chosen to take the risk instead of spending about $400. So, I conceded to add the additional protection. The work proceeded well. The tech and I struck up a good conversation about lawn maintenance, a favorite chore of mine (and his), and it finished up pretty much as we expected. West Houston did a fine job for me. I will use them again as there are always a few more things to be done in a house as old as mine. ("Old" is such an odd description of a house that is 25 years old; but that is Houston for you.)"

"SSGE acted like a teenager wrt aftersale service. The first time I called SSGE was when then was an alarm on the system, ( a year after install) and they refused service!!! The reason per SSGE was that there was dispute during install. During the sales process, SSGE had told me that HOA approval was NOT needed. Right after installation, the HOA wanted to remove the generator, and it took me 2 weeks to sort out the issue. I paid SSGE the second half of the payment in full only after the dispute with HOA was settled in about 2 weeks. Is that a good enogh reason to not provide service?? I had to call Generac's head-quarters and they helped me trouble shoot the alarm on my system."

Installing a whole-house generator costs about $5,000 on average. Prices range from $1,550 to $8,500, depending on size, brand, fuel type, and assembly. The size of your whole-house generator is the most significant cost factor, with large homes with high energy demands costing the most to power. Types of whole-home generators include:
Portable generators with 1kW–7.5kW capacity: $500–$2,000
Partial generators with 9kW–20kW capacity: $2,000–$6,300
Whole-house generators with 22kW–48kW: $5,000–$18,000
When maintained properly, a whole-house generator can last up to 20 years. Costs to maintain and repair generators vary by location and type of generator, but you can expect to pay about $150 to $300 per year for annual generator maintenance checks. An experienced generator service technician will inspect your generator’s engine filter, starting mechanism, fuel, lubrication, and coolant levels to keep your generator in good working condition for as long as possible.
When choosing the right size generator for your needs, consider a few items to help calculate the wattage you’ll need. Start by determining which household items and appliances you want to power, and then add the wattages together. Check out the wattage of these essential appliances:
Refrigerator: 600 watts
Large dehumidifier: 700 watts
Large window air conditioner: 1,400 watts
Water heater: 3,000 watts
Running home appliances like these requires a partial or whole-house generator. A portable generator may be enough to power your home if you only plan to keep a refrigerator and freezer running.
Here’s what you can run with different wattages and types of generators:
Portable generator:
2,000 watts can handle a large appliance like a freezer or refrigerator, plus a few smaller items like phones or computer chargers.
4,000 watts will keep two large appliances operating and a few smaller devices.
8,000 watts should power most essential appliances and other devices, including a sump pump, well pump, or your dishwasher.
Partial to whole-house generator:
20,000 watts and above will make it seem like your home’s power is still on.
The value of installing a whole-house generator is that your home has guaranteed power, even if the power grid in your area is down. Whether a whole-house generator is worth installing in your home depends on how often you use it, your home’s location, and your lifestyle. For example, installing a whole-house generator is likely worth it if you:
Experience frequent or prolonged power outages
Work from home
Store a lot of cold food
Have a sump pump
Have a pump for well water
Use electronic medical devices
Live in a climate requiring heating or cooling
