 + 0 moreJim Maas had GREAT ideas! He suggested plants, drew up the beds and gave us very good advise as what to plant and how to care for the new plants. There was a problem with a whole row of gardenias that they planted, and they came back tore them out and replaced them no questions asked.

Description of Work: I used a coupon from Angie's List to purchase lanscaping plants from Maas. The plants were all good quality, and Maas has a good selection to choose from (many of each type of plant as well as a wide variety of plants). Note that this was a purely retail job, I did the 'installation' myself.

Description of Work: Wow, I called the nursery, landscaping co.; was more than enough with the phone call; the woman that answer me treated me like if I was a child explaining how they work. Second that I had to take measurements of my patio (me?), take photos of it plus take photos of what my husband and myself wanted; I told the woman that they are a little bit far away from my house and can’t drive long distances because I’m recuperating from a surgery (by the way it is not her business and felt uncomfortable). So she said that in that case a landscaper could come to my place and he was going to charge me an amount for this, another for that…….. And the worse was when SHE said could talk to my husband to explain everything, WHAT? . Clients and Service are first. Thanks, Cecille

 + -1 moreThe meetings and design process took a while to complete. A popular nursery and landscape contractor has lots of clients. We worked well together when discussing the design. You have to be patient, and his office kept in touch. It took a few months to finally get the project completed; heat, weather, and plants availability must all be considered. We are very pleased with the complete project and love having envious neighbors. In case, our landscaping upgrade has prompted one of our neighbors to clean up their yard!
Description of Work: I had a one-on-one meeting with Jim Maas to discuss what we were looking to have done. I brought photos of the area to be landscaped/measurements of the yard area and ideas of what type of plants we had on hand. My next meeting with Mr. Maas was to discuss the design he put together for our front yard landscape. He is very professional, knowledgable, and personable. We came to an agreement on the plan and plants. When the date was set to pu the plan into effect, his contractors were very polite and completed the job in two days. The worksite was always kept neat and clean. One month after installation, Mr. Maas personally came out to see how the plants and design were doing.

I was willing to purchase several thousand dollars toward my landscaping but when I asked for the $89.00 to be applied to the purchase price I was told no because I was not purchasing the entire landscape plan that Jim Maas sketched. However he wasn't willing to make changes to the plan when I told him specific things I did not like about it, Working with this company is a waste of time, they want to dictate how much you spend and what you spend it on. I was told by Daniel, Maas Nursery would refund my $89 since I wasn't willing to spend more than $2000.00 however Daniel never sent the check. I was really looking forward to having a landscape plan to develop a great backyard space, they could have earned my business for years to come.
Description of Work: I canceled my appointment because they would not honor the 89.00 credit toward purchase.

Since they are so far "out of the way" it makes sense that they have a picnic area, and that they expect people to come, wander around and stay awhile. (But it's easy to combine a trip to Maas Nursery and a meal in Kemah.) I love the quality of their plants and the selections. They don't have just a few herbs for my garden, but many different kinds and in small and larger pots; they don't just have bamboo, they have all kinds, including black bamboo. And their choices of bedding plants restocked my yard for the year.
Description of Work: Purchased lots of bedding plants, and several specimen bushes for my yard.

 + -1 moreBased on some advertising and a coupon on Angie's List by Maas Nursery/Landscaping for free landscape design plan (if plants were purchased from and installed by Maas nursery), I called the nursery and set up an appointment to meet with Jim, who I'd spoken to on the phone. I was asked to bring measurements of my yard as well as pictures, which I did. When I arrived for our meeting, I was introduced to someone else, Daniel Cruz, who would be the one designing the plans. I was a bit disappointed / surprised that I was meeting with someone different because whenever I read his website and ads they touted all of his expertise and experience and that was the reason I picked his company and came to meet with him on a very cold day. Daniel and I talked in detail about the style of landscaping I was interested in, which was Oriental/Japanese style for my front and side yards, as well as shrubs along my back fence. My budget was approx. $5000 for plants, soil, mulch, and labor, no hardscaping. I was even willing to increase the budget a little, as necessary.Daniel seemed knowledgeable about the kinds of plants I was interested in and they had several Japanese Maples as well as Camellias, etc. I was advised to wait a week or two till the last frost had passed for work to begin while he worked on the plans.I called and e-mailed several times to follow-up and was told once that the designer had been out due to being ill. To make a long story short, they dropped the ball and did not follow through despite the fact that this was usually the least busy part of their work season. I was recently at the store 2 wks ago looking at plants and once again asked to speak with the landscape designer. My name and number was taken down but I never received any calls. I don't think Maas Landscaping is all that it's cracked up to be. The nursery itself is very well stocked but I just refuse to beg some diva landscaping company to take my money.

 + -1 moreIt was a $99 special offer and I was very dissatisfied. It was a total waste of money. They didn't do anything for me. I had to go to them and they told me that they were not coming to me. They told me I had to take photos so I took photos and then they couldn't find the photos. I finally had an hour discussion with some guy and he didn't understand why I was even there. It took me about 3 weeks to set anything up because they would never call me back. Finally they called me back and they are totally discombobulated.
Description of Work: I used Maas Nursery & Landscaping for landscaping consultation.

Description of Work: Maas is and will be the source for most of my plants that are not purchased online (if Maas doesn't have the bulk I want/need). The place is delightful, and worth a field trip (take your lunch and something to drink because you are not going to find those amenities at this large nursery). The folks are helpful, and I have enjoyed every trip I have ever made over the years, whether I bought anything or not. The herb selection is largest anywhere ...

We love the customer service and their prices are reasonable considering the first rate advice we always get. Their workers truly know plants and seem to enjoy their jobs.  + -1 moreWe terminated the work. We first visited Maas nursery on 2/12/2011 and paid a $400 planning fee. We gladly paid the planning fee since we had used the nursery in the past with good results. The first plan was presented to us on 3/28/2011 - 6 weeks. It was simple, but seemed to meet our interest of "low maintenance" (as in, none). On 4/28/2011 - 10 weeks - I received a simple line drawing so we could get a sprinkler system installed before the new plants were installed. We were disappointed with how simple the design appeared on the drawing once we saw the planform view, especially for $400! We expressed our disappointment to the designer. He modified the design, and we verbally approved it on 5/1/2011 - 12 weeks from the 1st meeting. The designer said he would supply a revised estimate. There was a concrete slab that needed to be removed before the new landscaping could be installed in its place. Even though the slab could be removed at any time, it was not complete until 5/6/2011 - 5 weeks after we verbally approved the work. The new landscaping still wasn't installed. The front of our house was now a sand pit where the concrete had been, including the landing in front of the door. I called the designer on 5/17/2011 and reminded him we still needed the revised estimate and that I wanted to get the landscaping installed as soon as possible. He promised me several times he would bring it by. He never did. Finally, on 5/24/2011, I called and told him we were not going to implement the design he was working on. He never did deliver a finished drawing or estimate to us. I paid Maas for the concrete removal and we will go elsewhere to get the landscaping designed and installed. I consider the design fee to have been wasted. I also think I paid too much too much for the concrete removal, but was willing to let them make a little extra profit since it was about 1/3 of the total estimated cost including the landscaping. I wish that in our first meeting in February, the designer would have simply told us that Maas doesn't do concrete, and that we would need to arrange to get the slab removed ourselves. Even if we had, I'm not sure the designer would have ever finished the landscape design.
Description of Work: Maas was contacted to remove a 20'x5' exposed aggregate front patio and install simple low-maintenance bushes and plants. The work required concrete removal, a plan for the replacement landscaping, and then installation.

Description of Work: I met with Mr. Jim Maas on Saturday May 7th, after a mutual rescheduling from early April. From the moment I met Jim, I knew we would have a wonderful experience. We connected immediately because his home reflects the care and attention he pays to details. I knew this would translate to my outdoor project! I was prepared with the required color pictures of the areas of my yard to be addressed (17 pictures), however, my measurements were a bit challenging. The areas I had measured, and the notes I had made, only made sense to me, so I had to translate while Jim configured the layout of my yard from my translation. I felt awful when I realized this would take a bit more time and a lot of his patience, but I'm here to tell you that Mr. Jim Maas worked patiently and lovingly with me, and never once gave the impression that he was at all perturbed with this puzzle we were piecing together. That let me know right off that this was a man I would enjoy working with! As he and I discussed my landscape vision, he listened attentively, and I got the real sense that he was listening in order to give me exactly what I was envisioning. I'm no landscaper, which is why I turned to a professional. I appreciated his input, his expertise, and his knowledge about possibilities and alternatives. We were in the "discovery" phase of our encounter, so I left the drawings and measurements for him to formulate a design based on our conversation. We did not discuss my budget at that time, because I conveyed to Jim that I'm a DIY kinda client and he was perfectly ok with providing guidance for me to get as much done on my own as I could. To that end, the method will be for him to provide the landscape design, and serve as my consultant. I would become my own general contractor, working with labor, materials, etc., based on his guidance and recommendations. I will be very happy to have Maas Nursery perform any work that I can't get handled with my own "sweat equity" crew. Our agreement includes a design for the back yard at this time, however, you can be sure I will be meeting with him again to discuss landscaping plans for the front of my home. I would recommend Maas Nursery very highly at this time. And, I haven't even begun to work with them! Linda

 + -1 moreWe purchased the big deal of landscape design for our front yard after seeing many good reviews about the landscaper. The work we had in mind was not complicated, but we wanted to get some professional help on selecting the right foundation plants. We made two phone calls to the nursery to schedule an appointment, one on the same day of purchase and the other on the next day. We left our phone numbers and messages with his staff. We also sent him an email to be sure. We did not hear back from him after a week and we decided to drop it. We contacted AngiesList and they refunded our money. In conclusion, we are very disappointed. We understand that it is probably a very busy season for the landscaper, but we wish that he had at least sent us a notification. Though we suspect he might be a very good landscaper, we were not able to judge his capability at this time.

 + -1 moreWe hired Jim Maas to do a landscape design that was a deal through Angie's list. We met intially for about an hour, we had brough pictures of the house/yard. We are not natural green thumbs, so we expressed our needs for ability to manage in hot and cold weather. We talked about the types of things we liked, and didn't like (i.e. tropical). We talked about colors, the use of stone, etc. We then met a few weeks later (we have a large front yard....so it took a bit longer than if we lived in more of a traditional "lot" size). We reviewed the drawings, which incorporated our conversation exactly. We were a bit hesitant about some of the plants, but we walked around the nursery with Jim and in the end agreed that his picks were best. Generally i am a very picky person, so the fact that we agreed with all of his selections was amazing. They started the next week. It took the crew 5 days to complete in total. The crew was very friendly and worked hard. Thankfully we also speak spanish, so it made the translating our questions much easier. As we had questions we would call and talk with Jim who always had suggestions and open to making changes as we saw necessary. Our landscaping is exactly what we were looking for. It fits our house perfectly. We would not change anything about the design.

 + -1 moreAgain the landscape plans were great I thought the estimate for the landscape service slightly high but would probably be worth it if we could afford it but since my husband decided to have a fence put up first we will have to save again for more work. I have bought plants and supplies from them before and know they sell a good product. I would recommend them to anyone and feel good about it.
Description of Work: Mr Maas performed excellent service. I visited with him 3 times to make some changes in the plans and he was more than willing to work with me. We will probably use his nursery to do the landscaping work when the time comes. My husband decided to replace the back fence first. I would highly recommend his service.
