The technician seemed entirely professional and helpful in performing the above-mentioned services. However, his advice was basically that it would be a waste of time, money, and effort to try to perform extensive service on the system, inasmuch as 1/3 - 2/3 of the coils were shot; a/c refrigerant type hard to obtain, etc.. He did mention which replacement systems he found to be the best ones, and advised that a whole new a/c system could cost $7000-$10000. I asked him to have an appraiser from his company contact me. The appraiser did, and he repeated those figures. That's that story. Subsequently, I took a friend's advice and called an older man (who shall remain anonymous) who was personally recommended by that friend. Over the telephone the man diagnosed the problem correctly (as it turned out) as probably being caused by dirty coils and a buildup of rust at the back of the a/c unit, causing it to overflow. Unfortunately, despite indicating that he would come to my house and deal with the problem, he never did. I even called him a second time; again he promised to come by - and again he never did! I spent the two hottest weeks of my life (temperature recently hit 110 degrees!) waiting in vain for him to come. He's apparently an older man, so I guess can't fault him for not responding during this horrendous hot spell. Finally, I called Fernandez Heating and Air Conditioning for assistance (210) 834-1192. I had used their services years ago and was very satisfied with their work at that time, but I had lost their name and contact details. When I finally got to them today , Mr. Fernandez and his son Mark they came right over; they even remembered me from years ago. They quickly removed my a/c coils unit and took it away to clean it of rust and accumulated debris. They also cleared and checked all the plugged up drain lines. I don't really know if the Tiger Co. technician neglected to clean all the lines or what, or if I, myself, had caused them to plug up again by trying to siphon out the accumulated rust and water from the coils unit. All I know is that the lines were plugged with powdery rust when we opened up the system today. It's no wonder the a/c unit wouldn't drain through the lines. In any event, Fernandez, father and son, sorted it all out. Remember, Tiger had said it was a waste of money to try to service the a/c unit, but the Fernandez father and son team took the time to clean the unit and now it all works fine. I had them do some other work around the house, too, but their work on only the a/c cost me about $800. Compare that to the $7000 - $10000 I was quoted (by at least two different companies) to replace the whole system. I have lots of confidence in the professionalism and integrity of Fernandez. I do not have that same feeling for the three others I called, so draw your own conclusions. I'm also feeling much less confident of the benefit of using Angie's List. ---------------------------------- Updated 5 September 2011 -------------------------- After sweltering through the hottest Texas summer in decades (if not in history), I now have a/c again, although summer is now drawing to a close. After originally having my a/c system's coils cleaned and drain lines un-clogged, it turns out that I developed even more problems. It is likely that the rust which had accumulated in the system over the years may be all that was holding it together. So, the TIGER technician turned out to be right after all: it would have been futile to spend money trying to keep up with all the problems. So, I had the Jose L. Fernandez A/C company replace my a/c system with a new one. Mr. Fernandez and his son did a great job, to include installing another a/c outlet in an upstairs bedroom. I'm very satisfied. This is not to say that I would not have been unsatisfied with TIGER, but at least the Fernandez Company made the effort to repair the old system, even though that effort ultimately turned out to be futile. They did credit me with the money spent for the repairs, though, and applied it towards the purchase and installation of the new system. Regarding my grade that I would not use the same company (TIGER) again, I can only say that I would have to go with the company (and people) that I now know. This is nothing against TIGER; I see from these ratings that may people are happy with them. I wish them - and you - good luck.
Description of Work: Our a/c unit was leaking water on to the ceiling below. The technician did clear some drain lines and hooked up his gear to measure the output of the a/c compressor. But he more or less wrote the whole system off as too far gone to waste more money on. He provided what I think is good advice on replacement systems. ------------- See additional comments updated below 5 September 2011 ----------------------

The air conditioner quit working and kept blowing a fuse. He replaced it and it worked fine for 3 days. The service call was $300 and he charged me $20 for a fuse. It kept blowing a fuse again and they sent out another service man that had been here before. We found that there was a wire shorting out in the back and he fixed it. I am not pleased with their services and the first worker that was sent to my home.
Description of Work: I the hired them to repair my a/c.

Response from Tiger Services Air Conditioning & Heating
We can understand why the member might be frustrated with the needed repairs for his air conditioning system. When a system has an intermittent problem – it is frustrating to ALL persons involved, the technicians and the client. Having an intermittent electrical problem like the member had is like taking your car to the repair shop for a strange noise and the day you finally take it to the mechanic, the car decides to behave and the strange noise is not there any longer. That is what happened here. When Tiger Services was called on Saturday morning at 8:15 AM, we promised to be at his house between 2PM – 4PM. The technician arrived at 2:35 and found the customer had attempted to change the batteries on the digital thermostat and now the low voltage fuse was blown. The technician replaced the fuse and performed a minor electrical check. Since this was the first time for the fuse to blow, the technician did not feel he needed to charge for more time tracking down an electrical short that might not really exist. The battery could have been the source of the problem. There were no other obvious reasons for the fuse to blow and the system was now cooling the house. The fee was only $158. 5 days later, the fuses are blown again. Because this is now the second time for the fuse to blow, the technician needed to spend more time to find out what was really causing the issue. The second technician arrived at 9 AM the same morning the member called in. He tracked down the low voltage short (which can be very tricky to locate) and repaired the wiring issue. The fee was only $130 for all the new repairs. It is unfortunate that the member is “not pleased” with our services but we really do not know what we could have done differently to resolve the intermittent wire short. We arrived on time and we honored all of the warranties. We enjoy working for subscribers of Angie’s List. If anyone has a question about pricing, we work late….just call us – we are there when you need us. Tiger Services Air Conditioning 210-344-0060 www.OrangeTIGER.com

We have a bit of a maintenance agreement with them where they come in twice a year to check our HVAC system. We've been using them for the better part of 10 years, maybe 7 or 8 years. They have been keeping us out of trouble and we've not had any issues in a while regarding our heating and air conditioning. They do maintenance and clean the coils to make sure that it works. My wife has dealt with them face to face more than I have. They schedule with my wife and they are there the day they say they will be. We will continue using them.
Description of Work: We use Tiger Services Air Conditioning for heating and air conditioning. They were last here to check our air conditioning to make sure everything was looking okay.

Overall, the service Rick, the A/C technician, provided was above and beyond what I expected and I'm happy to reaffirm the positive reviews Tiger A/C Service has gotten on Angie's List. I've been lucky so far in choosing the right providers based on Angie's List reviews and hope other members are just as lucky as I am. Rick was dedicated and took pride in his work. His professionalism and customer service was "spot-on" and I would even nominate him for Employee of the month. He explanations of what he was doing enabled me to learn a few things about A/C operations. I consider that "value-added" customer service. Good job Tiger A/C...keep up the great customer service!
Description of Work: Tiger technician came over to troubleshoot A/C unit not cooling inside of house. I was given a courtesy phone call that technician was on his way. When the technician arrived, he professionally introduced himself and asked to see the A/C units. The technician told me to turn on the A/C so he could see what the outside unit (compressor/condenser) was or wasn't doing. As he was troubleshooting the unit, he was explaining to me what he was doing and why. I asked some questions and he answered them to my level of understanding of A/C operations (didn't talk above my head). Which I find as a positive attribute in keeping your customer's educated with the services you provide. He isolated the A/C fault to the dual starter capacitor. Although he didn't have one on-hand, he replaced it with 2 capacitors and fastened them inside the electrical compartment in an organized manner. I'm a retired military person and I've seen my share of good technicians and not-so-good technicians. This Tiger technician is a real good technician. His dedication and pride in what he does shows in his workmanship. I hope all of Tiger's A/C technicians show the same degree of pride and dedication in their workmanship. He also checked the fan motor just to ensure it was not going bad since this is sometimes the cause of the capacitors failing. He showed me what it would cost to replace the fan motor. It was good to hear they were still operating under normal tolerances. He pretty much met my expectations with all the good reviews I've read on Angie's list. As I've often said, "first impressions" are always a "make or break" issue for me on whether to continue or find a better service provider.

We have been using Tiger for 10 years. We initially purchased a yearly service agreement from them. They call us on a six month schedule to set up servicing our 4 A/C units. When we bought the house it was 24 years old, as were 2 of the units! They kept the old ones going in good shape until it was time to give them a decent burial, then recommended the correct tonnage and SEER we needed for replacement. We've now replaced all of them and they continue to service them and we are very pleased. The same service connections come to our house each time. They know our house and our units and always leave a detailed report. A few years ago they cleaned our ducts and replaced an in-attic unit. They were quick and efficient, polite and cleaned of the little bit of mess they made in going up through the bathroom attic opening. I LOVE Tiger!

I found out right before Christmas that both the federal & state governments were offering tax credits & rebates to install new, efficient heating & air-conditioning units, but the catch was that the system had to be installed by the end of the year (Fed), and it couldn't be purchased before December 20 (state). I was thinking there was no way anyone would be able to schedule and install a whole new climate control system between 12/20 & 12/31 when I started making phone calls on 12/18. Well, Tiger called me back right away after I left them a message to see if they could even install a new system, and they assured me that an installation could be done. They were at my home and wrote out an estimate on 12/22. I approved the estimate and the installation was scheduled for 12/27. On 12/27 they arrived on time and were very courteous. I even got a bigger, better, more efficient Lenox system for the same price as the originally quoted unit was out of stock Wow! The system was completely installed by that night, and the units are working perfectly. Tiger even helped me with all the rebate paperwork for the Federal tax credits, the State rebate and CPS rebates. They followed up after the installation to make sure everything is working properly. The whole process was so smooth and they were so courteous, I would recommend Tiger to anyone. When it comes time next year to replace the 2nd air-conditioner/furnace in my home, I will be calling Tiger again.

Everyone from Tiger Services was friendly, informative and very helpful. They were the second company we consulted about out problem and we chose them because of their thoroughness and demeanor. They arranged the financing which was coincidentally with our credit union . The two gentlemen who did the installation worked a very long and difficult day, especially since we have a 2 story home. They were always in good spirits and were able to fit a very large unit into a rather small closet space. Their work was very neat and clean and they were attentive to every detail. The house was covered with tarps from the front door to the upstairs area where the unit was installed and into the storage closet where the attic is accessed. I have not often witnessed two men put in such a physically hard days work and be so pleasant and conscientious. I certainly hope that Tiger Services compensates them well for their work because they are definitely a huge selling point for the company. That includes the original technician who checked our unit and the young man who helped choose and finance the unit. I will be using Tiger Services for any future air/heat work.

Called into Tiger dispatcher on Saturday night that our furnace blower motor had failed and wouldn't run. (we smelled burning insulation smell when AC came on) Agreed with dispatcher that repair tech should not come until Monday morning as parts not available until then anyways. On Monday, after diagnosis done by Tiger tech, found that indeed blower motor/ speed control needed replacement but they had to order from out of state for Tues PM delivery. I was also iinformed during the Monday visit that my 3rd party 10-year P&L service contract on system installed by Tiger Svcs in 2006 was out of business in 2008 and was in bankruptcy court! Tiger issued a letter explaining this, but not until this current visit in 2010! Luckily, I called Lennox and verified my 10 year parts warranty was still good on the furnace. Come Tuesday found out it wouldn't be until Thursday until motor came in! My wife dogs and I couldn't wait as this was the hottest days of the year (100F) and we were dying in the heat after day four. Called around to the other Lennox Premier dealers in town and found one who located the motor and installed on Weds. afternoon! What a relief! Contacted PJ at Tiger services again on Weds. and they agreed to destroy check payment for motor ordered (very expensive $700+) and not charge for the diagnostic service visit. I was very happy about this and will continue to use them in future. PJ was very gracous about situation and explained the P&L contract modifications to me. Tiger Servcies had installed my system and have been used every year for maintenance. This last incident was possibly due to Tiger Services being a regular Lennox dealership as opposed to a "Premier" Lennox dealer who supposedly priority on hard to acquire OEM parts.

Tiger had previously replaced my main unit (3.5 ton) last year along with my air distribution and ducting system, so I knew what to expect. These guys were great. They call ahead and show up on time. The paperwork was meticulous, including necessary paperwork for CPS rebate and income tax deductions.

After 1 year, I almost didn't post this, but I constantly hear this company advertised on NPR. I fear they are preying on the listeners knowing they are less likely to understand the intricacies of their homes heating/cooling systems. I would never recommend this company. Just inviting them out for an estimate is a risk you should take.
Description of Work: I had Tiger come out last year to look at our A/C system when it seemed to not be cooling efficiently. The tech told us that our "pressure was low" and offered to add "a couple pounds" for a small fee. Luckily, we declined as we had already asked another company for a 2nd opinion and wanted to see their suggestions. The 2nd company showed us that our aging ducts were the problem and offered to replace them for us. He also checked our "pressure" and showed us that it was fine. If we had added more to the system it would have overwhelmed the unit worn out the condenser...costing us several thousand dollars to replace. He admitted to us that unfortunately, this is a common scam in the A/C business and that is what the TIGER technician was likely trying to trick us into. We wrote a letter of complaint to TIGER and got quite a nasty response including threatening to retaliate if we posted a bad review online. I waited a year until we moved so they would not be able to retaliate for this bad review.

The story is described from start to finish above. The freon was low, which caused the A/C not to blow out cool air. The A/C unit is only 5 years old and still under warranty. The work performed was good and the representative was courteous and professional in mannerism. I inspected the new evaporator coil and it looks new and works well. My biggest problem is I refused the service to check for leaks, he insisted on checking it for free. There was no obvious leak for about five minutes during his check with me present, but as soon as I left his side, somehow freon began hissing out of a pin size hole in a small coil and spewing a dense cloudy mist. I was in shock and could not refuse additional service. My A/C repair cost went from $600+ to $1655.00. I've contacted the manager and will visit him to look at the old evaporator coil at 0600 in the morning. The manager was courteous and professional on the phone on the day of the service, although I did not tell him the full story, and when contacted two days later to disclose the story.
Description of Work: A/C inoperable. Condenser was cooled with water from a hose, freon replaced and the A/C worked. Service rep asked if I wanted him to check for the cause of freon leak at a cost of $400+ and I said no. He said okay, I'll check it for free. Using a scanning device he checked the evaporator coils on the system inside the house for about 5 minutes with me standing beside him watching, but there was no obvious sign of a leak. He asked a multitude of questions and I left his side to get a document to answer his question. I was away for 20 to 30 seconds and as I was approaching him with the document, he said oh, the leak has made itself known. Freon was hissing out of a pin size hole in a small coil and spewing a dense, cloudy mist in the area of the unit. The unit was under warranty and a new evaporator coil was put into the unit at a flat rate of $1035 (no break down of cost, no negotiating cost). The freon accounted for the additional $600+. Two other reps came to help install the new evaporator coil and it works well.

I called Tiger at 8:30 PM on Saturday and spoke with Robert who was extremely professional and punctual. He walked me through the common problems (water in the drain pan, circuit breaker tripped) and we found nothing wrong there so he came out on Sunday. He said he would arrive around 9:00 or 10:00 but showed up early at about 8:30. He had me shut off the compressor from the thermostat and turn it back on so that he could hear the *click* of it trying to start but failing. Robert did not have the right capacitor for my compressor (440V Dual) but had two capacitors that would do the trick. They two together were bigger than the original one in my unit so he had to get a longer metal fastener from his truck, but otherwise they were installed easily within just a few minutes. I rate the price D not because the service call was $83 (which is very good for weekend work) but because he charged $188 each for the two capacitors he used to replace mine. I looked up the retail cost for the capacitor I needed and it was $29.99 at the high end. I don't know if all A/C repair services have a 600% markup, but if they do they should all be rated "D" in price. I would use Tiger again for anything I can't figure out myself (which is most things).
Description of Work: My compressor stopped working on Saturday and Tiger was one of those on Angie's list known for good weekend service. Robert from Tiger replaced a blown capacitor on Sunday.

I was told it just needed to be blown out and he even gave me some tips to save me money. I was very impressed with his professionalism and that is rare. He could have said something else and I would have probably believed him because I am not very knowledgeable about AC. He was honest and that means a lot. Many AC companies take advantage and get as much up front as possible but Tiger is different it is the long term client they want and they got.
Description of Work: Our AC unit was backed up and they came to take a look.

Discovered the water leak Friday night, was worried about getting someone to come out due to it being the weekend. Called Tiger Services first thing Saturday morning, left a message on their answering machine and received a return call shortly after leaving the message. The scheduler told me he would have someone out the same day and that the technician would call me prior to coming to my home. The service techncian came around 10:30 a..m. - found the source of the leak - unlevel slab coil and clogged drain line - he leveled the coil and cleaned the line - he completed the service in approximately one hour.
Description of Work: Made repairs necessary to stop A/C unit in attic from leaking water onto the attic floor and subsequently into my spare bathroom through the light fixture over the bathtub.
