Gilbert was very kind & took the time to explain every aspect of the repair. I asked a lot of questions and he answered them all. If we chose to replace our AC unit in the near future, we will definitely call Schmidt to help us from installation to yearly maintenance. We were without our AC for a week, but thanks to Gilbert we are cool now! What a blessing!!!
Description of Work: Gilbert replaced a bad capacitor and added 3 pounds of R22 refrigerant.

The installers, Steve and Junior arrived on time at 8:30 as scheduled, introduced themselves, and went right to work. Our entire system needed to be replaced as well as some duct work done. It was a 90 + degree day here in San Antonio, and work was hot and tiring. Both Steve and Junior were professional and cheerful in spite of the heat and did a first rate job. They put down a new foundation for the outside unit, ran new wiring, and installed the unit. The inside unit had to go into the attic after the old one was removed. The duct work to our front bedroom done by the builder was substandard and it was replaced at the same time. Everything was done in a timely manner and they cleaned up after themselves when the job was completed. Albert was the technician who came at the end of the day to wire in and set up the new thermostat. It is computerized and he had it running in a short time. Jared oversaw all the work and showed us how to program and use the thermostat. He talked us through setting up the mobile app to monitor and change settings on our phones. Overall, we were very pleased with the work done by Schmidt Mechanical Group and will certainly use their services in the future, if needed.
Description of Work: Replaced our entire HVAC system, corrected the poor duct work done by our builder, made sure we understood how to operate and and maintain the system.

After researching reviews on Angie's List, I decided to give Schmidt a try. Our technician, Dawson, arrived at our home an hour behind the scheduled appointment window. Knowing he was behind schedule, he did call to state how long till he would arrive. I appreciated that. Due to being behind schedule, I was worried he would rush through the job of servicing the units, however, he proved me wrong. He thoroughly checked both units; giving my husband advice on maintaining them and keeping them in good working order along the way. When the conversation started about a part on each unit needing to be replaced due to wear, Dawson thoroughly discussed our options and even called his boss to see about getting us the best price. He did not pressure us, and said it would not prevent the system from working, but the parts would eventually fail at some point, causing the systems to stop working. With the Texas heat, we decided to have the work completed to prevent another service call. All in all, we were happy with our service, and will use them again in the future.

After the technician finished, he showed me a list of things that needed to be replaced, then showed me the cost to do the work. He was using a computer tablet to show me the list, and I asked that a copy of it to be emailed to me, but it never was, so i'm just going by memory. The least expensive item on the list of recommendations was almost $600.00; the next item after that was over $800.00. Chances are, that since I have a home warranty, if I do have any issues with my A/C in future, I will contact them for repairs.
Description of Work: I purchased a package that included an inspection of the A/C unit, changing out the air filter, pouring algaecide down the overflow tube, and recharging the freon, if necessary.

Heather was the technician who came to the house. She called ahead when she was on her way and arrived well within the time frame stated. She was professional, personable, and thorough. Heather took care of the outside unit first, and leveled it with spare bricks I had on the porch. She advised me that my system needed more than the two pounds of coolant allowed under the Angie's List coupon and got my permission to add another 3 pounds. Next, she cleaned and inspected the inside unit in my attic. When she was finished, she carefully went over the items she found that needed repair/replacement. Her recommendation was that my very old unit was failing and I should consider replacing it. After explaining to her that I needed to discuss this with my husband, she provided her number to call her and stated she would help my set up an appointment to have an full assessment done. At no time did I feel pressured to make a decision and I appreciated her honesty about the condition of my system. My husband and I have decided to replace our system and will certainly have Schmidt Mechanical Group do the work.

The problem was the outside unit of my AC was stuck on occasionally even after the thermostat had shut off the inside unit. One day it would run normally, but other nights I'd wake up to the fan running for no reason. On top of that, a line to the outside was freezing. I wasn't sure if the problems were connected, so I left it off for a day. The problems reappeared, and I resorted to unplugging the outside power box when needed. I bought an Angie's List deal for a tune up and 1 lbs of freon for $65. There was a little back and forth with the scheduler that I would need to pay a $29 diagnostic fee for the fan problems before I could use the Angie's List coupon. I was annoyed thinking that I'd already paid for the coupon, but as luck would have it the system was working normally when Johnny arrived. Since there was no problem with it, he called the office and proceeded with the coupon deal. He filled the system with 1 lbs of freon which solved the freezing line problem, and of course the system cooled better faster. I left him to his work, and he came in to tell me it was likely the switch and capacitor. The switch was getting sticky and the capacitor was dead. He quoted me $349 to replace them, and I didn't argue. He was here already and the first tech to actually get in there and tell me something. Other techs I've had out here had the simple ready answer of "replace the system". He brought the knowledge to do a little multimeter work and saved me from the thousands of dollars answer. To be fair he told me my AC is in hospice, but it's life has been extended a little. A straight answer, finally. That put them at the top of the list for a call back to service it and, hopefully in the far off future, replace it.

They caught a leak and tested for the location. Paid an extra $125 for them to look for the leak... I didn't have them fix it b/c they quoted $2300 for a fix, and offered to have me finance through them. ? I thought it was kind of steep. Any way, l called for another opinion. The next specialist confirmed what schmidt already had found..but took it another step to call the maker of my A/C to see if the coil was under warranty. It was. I remembered, after the specialist asked me, if I had a home warranty. I did. So his labor was covered and any extra parts he needed. I paid $75 out of pocket for the fix.

I signed up with Angie's list on 5/7 for my a/c service. Received a phone call from Schmidt on Friday scheduling for Monday, May 11th service. Technician called at about 8:50 AM to state that he would be arriving around 30 minutes depending on traffic. My technician's name was Robert and he did arrive around 9:30 AM. Robert was very polite and professional. He explained specific items to my husband and myself. He recommended a couple of items that needed attention although we were not prepared to cover those specific items but is something that we need to get taken care of. Appreciate the quick response and the courtesy and reliable service. Thank you Schmidt AC & Heating and Robert!

I filled out their question sheet when I purchased the special and put down my information and phone number. After not receiving any calls from them for 5 days I gave them a call and they couldn't find my purchase and then did and scheduled a tech for the next Tue 1-4. On Tue when it was 4:28 and we hadn't heard anything I called the company back and asked what the deal was and was informed that the tech was caught at the last job and would be about an hour. When the tech did arrive she was professional and nice and informative. Explained everything that was wrong and what they could do. Turned out that With my unit being 15 years old it would be cheaper to get a new one than fix the old one. The cost of the new one was a bit over my budget limit. 6,000 for a 3 ton 13 seer trane. For the current time I am going to have to try a differnt avenue. Nice company and I would recommend them if they got their call center under control a bit. Everyone I talked to was nice and friendly and wanted to help. I'm sorry it didn't work out for me to purchase an air conditioner for them.

First, dealing with the office was a delight. We set up the appointment a month in advance, for between 1 and 3 PM. At just past 3 PM, I contacted the office for a status, and was quickly told it would be between 4PM and 5PM, if that was okay. I said it was, but thought the "technician" should have let everybody know he was running late instead of us being on alert all afternoon. The technician, Johnny G, finally showed up around 6 PM in a surly mood. No small talk, no smile from this one. He right away volunteered to come back another day. So he would have had me wait 5 hours just for him to come back some other time. It turns out he had two more call to make. Anyway, I certainly got the impression he was not happy to be there. Johnny G quite clearly did not want me looking over his shoulder, so I am not sure as to what all he did. He said twice he would give me a report when he finished. That turned out to have some useful information, but was mostly just a sales pitch. He said that, despite me not having an A/C inspection for a few years, the coolant was not low and so I should not have the coolant fill part of the package. Since I did not observe the pressure reading, that might or might not have been true. He showed me a picture of mildew in the blower and mentioned that there was an air leak. Then he pitched a fix of nearly $1,900, to include properly patching the air leak, cleaning the blower and installing an ozone filtration system. I laughed and said that was way past what I might be spending anytime soon and asked for another option. He said what he was proposing was the best and did not have any other suggestions. He said it was my home and I could do what I liked, but said he would let me think over his "best" proposal. So far the grade would be no better that "C." The next afternoon I went to look at the unit in the attic and was absolutely floored and appalled to see that this "tech" had left it with a gaping air hole into the attic. I do not believe it was that way to start. Even if it was, he should NOT have left it that way. Holding out for some huge charge for a "BEST" fix is no excuse to not immediately do at least a temporary fix. I went ahead and fixed it myself, and am just glad I even thought to look. "F"! This guy wanted a big sales commission, is how I read it. I do not know if this is company policy or just this one "tech," but I would not recommend this place to anybody.

[member name removed], thank you for taking the time to share your experience. I am glad to hear that it was a delight dealing with the office when scheduling. I am so sorry to hear the technician or dispatcher did not keep you in the loop on the technician’s arrival time and once he finally arrived he was not friendly. There is no excuse for this level of service and it will be addressed. Our technicians are not commissioned sales people and sometimes they struggle with seeing it from the customers point of view. Not to defend the technician in any way but he did not want you to make the “temporary repair”, or have a lb. or refrigerant added to your system because that is not best for your system. One solution was given to address all of your issues and I will work with the technician on the delivery of that solution. We are not a company that will take someone’s money and run. We stand behind our work 100% and offer warranties on all work performed. The technician should have made the temporary repair and informed you that it was not a permanent fix and given you options for a long term solution. I will be using your feedback as training for my team to ensure we deliver the best level of service we can to our customers. Again, I am extremely sorry for the experience you received from my firm and thank your for sharing it with me. If you have any questions or additional concerns please do not hesitate to call me anytime at (210)444-9418. Keith Schmidt

Called them on Friday, early afternoon. They said they couldn't get to me until Monday afternoon. $60 diagnostic charge to come out. I had no heat in my gas furnace. Over the weekend, I found a red light blinking 6 times. Chart on furnace said it meant that the "electrical polarization was reversed". Monday afternoon repair man shows up. I tell him what I found about the 6 blinks of the red light. He looks everything over and says I need a new thermostat. I asked if there was a way for him to confirm that? He looks around some more and says "these wires here were reversed, it should work fine". It was fixed. He goes out to his truck and comes back and says "that will be $134!" I said "WHAT?" It had been 30 minutes since he arrived and he misdiagnosed it at first - after I had correctly diagnosed it, then tells me it was $60 to diagnose and $75 to "FIX"! The diagnosis WAS the fix. I wasn't given an option to spend $75 more to fix it.

[member name removed], thank you for taking the time to share your experience. I wish we could of spoke on the phone so I could explain the true value in the repair price that you received. It was our mistake that we did not thoroughly explain that the price you paid for us to make the repair. Included in the $134.00 you paid for your repair was labor, taxes & insurance, vehicle expenses, workers compensation, general liability, overhead, sales tax and a full 1 year warranty. I wish it were not so but margins such as these are necessary to operate and sustain a viable service business and properly compensate hard working dedicated individuals and their families that sacrifice greatly to bring great service to our customers. Should you choose to call again in your time of need or refer a close acquaintance you can count on two things from Schmidt Mechanical Group, Inc., dependable service from well trained service technicians with integrity, and to pay accordingly. Thank you for your business and please feel free to call if you have any questions or need any additional information.

The technician was very professional. He explained everything to me and showed me the problem with the A/C unit outside. Also, I've had two other HVAC companies come out to look at our attic over the years, and neither could find why the upstairs was not cooling well. It turned out that their was a tear in the duct work. From the summer on, I didn't have issues with the upstairs being too hot. I was very satisfied with the service and would definitely recommend Schmidt Mechanical to anyone.

We selected Schmidt Mechanical Group based on their reviews on Angie's List and we were not disappointed. Customer service was fantastic! John, Rusty and Eddie were very courteous, knowledgeable, professional and respectful of our home. We initially contacted the company to come out and perform a "Cooling Check" on our a/c unit. John performed the cooling check. During the process John explained in detail and showed us why the a/c unit was not cooling adequately. The a/c system was also old and needed to be replaced. Rusty, the Service Technician explained the advantages and disadvantages of selecting a new a/c unit for our home. Because of his experience and knowledge, the process did not make us feel overwhelmed. He was always reassuring. Eddie, the installer is a "get her done" type guy. He and the other installers came in conducted business, cleaned up after installing and were gone in a matter of hours. We are very pleased with the service that was provided and with our new a/c.

He came out and was nice. However, when I called Schmidt back when the air conditioner stopped working six weeks later. I had him come out to do a bid. The bid was so horrible. He woulnd’t give any details. Just big figures. I wanted the break down and he would not give me details. For the service, I felt like he did a good job. However, I would never recommend them for a replacement kind of deal. He was totally unwilling to help me understand what it was he selling me. I really tried. When I did the research of pricing later, the price was astronomical. I did not trust them from a sales perspective, as far as informing me.

Thank you for your feedback on this matter. I am happy to hear that you were happy with the initial service. I am extremely sorry the bid was horrible and the Comfort Consultant was not able to answer all of your questions. The individual that quoted you replacement options was new to our method and I have since performed more training with him along with all of the technicians to make sure we do not leave a bad impression with our customers. If the sales man or technician does not explain and show you exactly what he is quoting and give you multiple options on new systems I completely understand how you would get frustrated. Once again I am extremely sorry for the experience, as this is not how I run my business. Thank you again and we will definitely use your feedback to better our overall experience we leave with customers.
