Overall, it was a good experience. The quality of the work done was excellent and they left the area very clean. The employees/owner were professional. The job was completed and performed as planned/quoted.

Fence looks great and was a lot less than a full new fence.

Very punctual, early every morning and worked hard every day ( took 3 days to complete). After job was finished, they did a total clean up and you would never know that they had been there except for the beautiful job they did. You can't go wrong using them for your project. No money exchanged hands until job was finished and was given a 2 year warranty!!

As a small business owner/entrepreneur myself, I rely on personal testimonials and ratings to demonstrate to the public the character of the services I deliver. So, I don't take these reviews lightly and I generally have a preponderance to provide the subject of any review with the benefit of the doubt. That said, I owe it to other consumers to share my experience so you can make your own judgment, based upon the facts, about Black Pearl. Black Pearl was punctual in returning phone calls, priced reasonably, seemed knowledgeable, and had great ratings. So, instead of hiring them to actually perform the deck refinish work, I decided to initially engage Black Pearl to provide me with expert advice on how to proceed with staining/refinishing my deck. I merely sought an unbiased opinion of the condition of my deck along with specific recommendations on the most effective way to recondition the deck and improve its aesthetics. Now, as the expert, I relied on (and paid for) Black Pearl to provide professional advice on exactly how to proceed to refurbish my deck in light of my deck's specific needs & present condition. Black Pearl's recommendations generally included cleaning, sanding and staining the deck. The reconditioning protocol, however, made no mention of the requirement of removing "pulp" or any other residual material from the deck surfaces other than dirt, grime, mold, mildew, etc. For those of you, like myself, who are not familiar with deck staining procedures, "Pulp" are thin wood strips removed from the deck board surfaces under extreme hydro-static force during water pressure washing. And, as I learned from Black Pearl after the job was complete, staining over pulp produces a dark color when compared to other smooth wood surfaces. This discoloration gives the deck a non-uniform stain color appearance. Not very aesthetic. Now, unfortunately, and without ever advising me of the impact of such, Black Pearl elected to stain over the deck "pulp". And while known to Black Pearl but unbeknownst to me before the job started, pulp existed in the grooves between the deck boards. As a matter of fact, Black Pearl freely indicated they were aware of the existing pulp located in the grooves, knew this pulp would create a non-uniform discoloration, yet elected to proceed to stain the deck without disclosing any potential pulp staining impact to me at any time during the job. Then, after the job was complete, I advised Black Pearl that the stain was unsightly. Black Pearl acknowledged the pulp stain discoloration, yet made no effort to re-mediate the obviously unsightly problem. When queried further about why I was not advised before, during or after the job that staining over pulp would produce cosmetic deficiencies, Black Pearl seemed to suggest that they had no obligation to advise me of such, in spite of the fact that I paid them to specifically provide "expert" recommendations on how to recondition my cedar deck prior to starting the staining/conditioning job. To summarize: I hire Black Pearl to provide expert advice before starting the deck staining/conditioning work. Black Pearl, when acting as an expert, fails to disclose to me before the job starts that staining pulp results in a workmanship defect/discoloration condition. The job is complete and the stained areas where the pulp is located are comparatively dark and unsightly. Black Pearl admits knowing the likely outcome of staining over "pulp" after the job is complete. Black Pearl takes no action to-date to re-mediate the pulp staining defect caused by their error/omission when providing expert advice.

Terrific. In mid-May we paid a small upfront fee ($50, worth a $100 deduction if the job went ahead) to Black Pearl Custom Painting's owner, Michael Doherty, to professionally inspect our decks and prepare a job proposal; he spent 90 minutes at our home doing just that. During his visit he answered all our questions, gave his recommendations on the work he thought should be done and why, suggested a number of recycling measures we could take to cut project costs, and prepared on-the-spot a four page job proposal replete with photos, notes and cost break downs for our review and consideration. We were so impressed with Mr. Doherty -- professionally and personally -- and so confident his company could deliver the promised goods and more, that we accepted his proposal right there and then. Didn't feel the need to get job proposals from other companies and have never regretted the decision. He explained we would have to wait several weeks before his crew could do the needful. We arranged for the work to begin June 19, and on that day he and his crew arrived just like he said they would. They came, they sawed, they worked. Transforming our old, worn-out and shabby decks into new looking, neat and impressive outdoor living spaces only took the Black Pearl professionals a few working days, but oh! what a difference those days have made to how our backyard looks. A word of praise for the BP crew -- the days they worked were hot (temperatures in the mid to upper 90s) with the sun cruelly beating down on Englishmen and those foolish enough to work outside, but they worked consistently and steadfastly to get the job done, and get it done right. They were thorough, professional, polite, and hard-working at all times. Bravo. I understand why Black Pearl Custom Painting has a legion of customers who have become their biggest fans and boosters. We're joining that club, too. Next year we'll have them back to paint the house!

After reading several stellar online reviews for Black Pearl Custom Painting, I reached out to Mike for a staining estimate for my new deck. The deck was still under construction but far enough along that Mike was able to give me a quote, which was reasonable and within our budget. Anticipating the deck would be completed shortly, we agreed on a timeframe for staining. Unfortunately, there were several delays caused by the deck company, and I had to push back the staining timeline several times. Mike was wonderful throughout the whole process, reassuring me that he would do everything he could to work around my delays. Near the end of the deck construction, I had a personal deadline that was nearing (family visiting from out of town) but Mike still assured me he and his team would be able to complete the job. On the last day of deck construction, as the deck crew was packing up to leave, Mike and his crew showed up and started prepping. Aside from being incredibly flexible and extremely professional, Mike and his crew were amazingly efficient. I had expected the job to take two to three days but they were able to sand and stain my 400 sq ft deck and arbor in one day. The results are simply amazing…they transformed a plain deck into a thing of beauty. One of my main concerns going in was how they would work around my recessed hot tub and how careful they would be not to get excess stain on the house, concrete, hot tub, etc. I now realize I had no reason for concern. They protected my house and hot tub perfectly, just like Mike assured me they would. Throughout the entire process, Mike delivered as promised. He and his crew, in fact, far exceeded my expectations. I would not hesitate to partner with Mike and his crew for any future painting or staining needs.

This company is the best. Mike was fast and efficient. Once he knew why I needed the work done in a short span of time (party), he worked immediately to get the job done. I had to go out of town and the job was complete and looked beautiful by the time I got home. I will always use this company to maintain my deck and will tell all my friends what a fantastic company this is.

Terrible showed up on Wednesday. Said it was raining and he could not use power tools. Said he would be back Friday but didn't show. Then said he would be here Monday and again did not show

It worked out great. He provided the quote and he always kept me informed. He is a terrific business man and I will highly recommend him.

Top-notch response & work performed. Mike is a great businessman who values a customer's need & time. His crew for this job Jose & Raul are a great compliment and knew exactly what they were doing. Mike's attention to detail during the site survey was much appreciated. All the work that was agreed upon on the official estimate was completed. The results were outstanding. In fact, it rained 2 days after the work was done & there wasn't a bit of bleeding from the recent staining. We have some more work to be done and we're going back to Black Pearl to get it done. Unfortunately we've had a terrible experience with the quality of work done on our kitchen cabinets by Mike. I'm five months pregnant and we have a 15 month old daughter so as you can imagine this has been very difficult on our family, hence why we wanted to hire someone to help us with updating our kitchen cabinets to begin with. Showing up late every day on the job, ruining our cabinets, wasting paint, and then excusing yourself from the job because "you don't need the money" is unacceptable. I understand that you're not familiar with the kind of paint we chose (Benjamin Moore Advance) but that has nothing to do with the fact that many steps were eliminated or done poorly. The technique and equality of the work are so bad that we had to take it all off. I didn't realize that negotiating the price also meant compromising the quality. It has taken us a week to scrape off the poor and unfinished paint job, our kitchen and living area are completely covered in white paint dust making it extremely difficult and stressful to live in. Many steps to proper cabinet refinishing were skipped or cut short resulting in paint dragging, paint splatter on the walls, floor, and granite, and just a messy and ugly paint job. It has cost us more time, effort, exhaustion, and money to clean up the mess left behind by black pearl custom painting. I attached pictures on Google Maps review because they show how badly the quality of work we received. We thought having the owner of the company do the work himself, we would be getting the best, but that's not the case at all. We've learned our lesson and wouldn't hire Mike ever again.

Mike pressure washed and stained my large deck for the third time. His customer service has always been excellent and he has produced a great look on my deck. He is very busy and worked me in to his schedule. I will call on Black Pearl again to maintain my deck.

Deck was damaged during the 2015 hail storms and needed some serious attention. The Black Pearl crew did a great job getting the deck back into shape. The team pressure washed the deck, replaced between 8-10 damaged deck planks, and then applied a solid color stain. My wife and I are very happy with the results and will be contracting Black Pearl to paint our house this fall.

It went great. Mike was easy to communicate with and was very knowledgable about different options for getting the job done. He offered several choices and price points for different services. Would use again and would recommend.

I believe that good relationships begin with good communication. But Custom Painting has gone cold on me and I am left to move on. I would have preferred an email indicating that "we are too busy to do the work etc. but we will be in touch..." but I personally don't think it is good business to ignore a potential customer. I will be looking elsewhere.

Absolutely fantastic! I really appreciated how quickly the job was completed. I had a short timeline and Mike made sure it got done in time. My deck looks great. I will definitely use this company in the future. They are very professional!

It was not good at all. I called him in May and asked him if he would come out. He came out again and said they can do the job and we set it up until I come off work and the day before he was supposed to come, he texted me saying he can’t do it. He did at least call when he wanted the money. He was late.

Michael was professional and punctual. His crew were polite and clean as well as quick. The job was completed quickly and we are very pleased.

Mike is a nice honest businessman. He does high quality work. Timing was a little challenging for the outdoor work given all the rain at the time, but Mike made things work by focusing on the interior work. The quality was outstanding (especially the deck repair and resurface). Mike also managed to totally match the colors we needed for a customer fence we built and did a first class job in painting the fence.

Mike was very professional from the beginning. They stained the deck a few months back and they mentioned a 1 year warranty which I thought I would never need. After about a month some of the wood around the knot holes started discoloring and fading very strangely. I sent Mike a few pics and asked him if I should just go over it again with some of the left over stain from the first round. He insisted that he would come out and look at it and make it right. There were only a hand full of bad spots but he went over the entire deck again just to make sure it looked even. I will recommend Black Pearl to anyone. They did a fantastic job and stood behind their work.

It took him a while to get here to actually do the job. I paid for the coupon and it took a while before he could get me on the schedule. Sometimes he would say he wouldn't be in the area or the weather wouldn't permit him to do the job. It took a long time and I had to keep following up with them.
