The service call was between $60 and $70. I called them up for a service call and they gave me an estimate. However, I ended up going with my home warranty program. Overall, they were excellent. I would absolutely get a bid from them in the future.

My mother, my husband and I have been using Brown for many years and we love it. They are always on time. They are always very helpful and courteous. They are efficient. There are some people, when we talk to them we know they don't know what they are doing, that is not the case with Brown. My mother gets her house done in fall and spring every year. They check, fix and oil the air conditioner. They fix anything that we ask them to do. My mother has used them for atleast ten years. They have been very honest and good with us. We would continue using their services again in the future.
Description of Work: We use the services of Brown Service Co. They charge $230 for the whole year, half in the spring and half in the fall. It is for air conditioning, we have two units. They check the unit and oil it if needed, inspect it and install new filters. Of course, if it is anything that needs before I have to pay extra for that. However, the inspection and the filters are included. They do clean the filters inside and outside.

The service person thoroughly check out the air conditioner electrical and found no problem. Even though I had had the breaker switch replaced last summer when this problem first occurred, the service person from Brown replaced it again when there appeared to be no problem with the air conditioner. This took care of the problem. As of this writing (8-1-11), the breaker switch has not flipped off. Apparently, a faulty breaker switch was installed last summer. I was very pleased with Brown Service Co. I think the charge for the service was reasonable. I highly recommend Brown Service Co.
Description of Work: I had a breaker switch which was continually flipping off when the air conditioner was running.

I was very pleased with the latest tech that serviced our unit. He explained in detail the process he was going to use to clean out the drain lines and arranged for replacement latch for broken doors. Also said he would check freon levels on all three units when he replaced latch. I understand we are all human and make mistakes but this issue may have caused some major damage to the duct work that will have to be addressed soon. I will have it inspected after latches are repaired and proceed based upon that inspection.
Description of Work: Our regular service tech was here in July to do semi-annual service on three a/c units. Early in Sept. we kept smelling a musty odor in the upstairs of our home, later it traveled to the downstairs rooms. Called Brown Service and reported problem and asked for service call. After inspection of all three units in attic, the tech reported that the door that houses filter in one unit had been left open and hot, damp attic air was being circulated in system, causing musty smell. During the semi-annual service, all three unit filters were changed by the tech's assistant and he evidently didn't close the door housing the filter. The most recent tech advised us that the latch on the door was broken but it had never been reported to us prior to this visit and Brown has had the service agreement on our home for the past several years, being the only a/c company to service our units. They offered to replace broken latch at no charge but I am very concerned that the duct work in our home has been compromised due to the intake of moist, hot attic air.

had to reschedule today's appt. for next Wednesday and was told "no matter what, we'll be there.
Description of Work: We have had a service contract with this company for the past two years. Several times when we have a scheduled appointment for service, they call and cancel, for various reasons, sick techs, last job took too long, filters for your units are not in, too many "out of service calls" from others that push me to the end of their list. Well, they already have my money from the service contract, so why not cancel your existing, paying customers for a new job? Learned my lesson after this last call, no more service contracts for me with this company as they don't treat their "preferred customers" with preferred service!!!!

Response from Brown Service Co.
Member, I want to apologize for having to reschedule your planned service last Friday. If I had known you would be upset, I would have figured out a way to have a technician come by late that evening. Friday morning we had two service technicians call in sick. So, I prioritized the service agreement customers who were having problems or were down completely. I assure you that if your system was not cooling we would have been out to repair the the problem that day. All the service repairs done Friday were for service agreement customers. Non service agreement customers were being scheduled for Tuesday the 20th. I was not aware that we had rescheduled you in the past. I am truly sorry for any inconvenience we may have caused you. We will mark your account "Do not reschedule" and I promise we will not ask you to reschedule your service in the future. Once again we try very hard to provide our loyal service agreement customers with the very best service we can and I apologize again that we did not deliver to your expectations.

Called the company Tuesday for an estimate on Duct Cleaning/Coil Cleaning and Tune Up since we had done some dusty remodeling in our home and have a new baby on the way. Was told over the phone that they cannot provide estimates over the phone and they would send someone out to look at the system and give me a quote. Technician was over two hours late due to an emergency call (however, this was not a huge deal since they did call me to let me know). He arrived and did not seem very keen on providing an estimate for the coil cleaning. He touched the unit, said he did not feel any ice on it so my coils were probably fine. He said it would run between $600-1000 to do this service (another very reputable company with great ratings on Angie's list quoted $300 over the phone). He did notice that there was some water on the floor and said our condensation pump line was clogged, but that he could not fix it and we would have to call a plumber. (This was a surprise to me but luckily we caught it). Then he proceeded to charge me a $65 "service call" fee that I was NOT told about when I called to get an estimate. He said this would have been charged regardless of the condensation line problem. I told him that this was not disclosed to me at time of booking and he said "Sorry, they're supposed to." After he left, I called the company and was told that they charge $65 anytime they send a truck out for anything, including estimates. The tech told me that I could apply this $65 charge to a future tune up, however, when I called the office, I was told no. This is a shady company and I will definitely not use them again or recommend them in the future.
Description of Work: Providing estimate on coil cleaning and duct cleaning. Tech was supposed to perform a tune up as well.

They seemed very professional and were very nice. When I told them I was just pricing units and shopping around. After that, he finished up and I never heard back from them. I called three times and finally they sent me an estimate but it was about 4x's more then others. I felt like it was not an appropriate estimate at all. I am not sure what happened because the company seemed like a good company to work with.

During the yearly check up of my central A/C, The HVAC provider I'd been using for 5 years found a leak in the A/C condensing coil. During the discussion about how to fix the problem, I had the uncomfortable feeling I was being fed bad information in order to sell me new equipment. Since the outside Trane compressor was only 5 years old, I looked on Angie's list for service companies who could provide me with equipment compatible with a Trane A/C compressor. Happily, that led me to Brown Service Company. The Brown rep, Tommy Woodell, came to my home immediately and provided me with a free consultation and an estimate for the cost of the needed repairs. Among other things, Tommy advised me that there was a Federal tax credit available for 30% of the cost (up to $1500) of any needed new energy efficient equipment. With that in mind, we decided to replace the old furnace and evaporator coil, as well as install a new return air source and grill. The old company I'd been using had also recommended an additional return air source, for which they proposed to charge $225. I liked Tommy Woodell's price better. Tommy simply gave me the new air source and grill for free! Since it only involved cutting a hole in the dry-wall and installing the new grill, Tommy said it was only about a $75 job, anyway. Tommy recommended a 95% efficient furnace and a suitable evaporator coil. Along with the additional air return, the whole job cost estimate was $6133. Two working days after I gave them the go ahead, the Brown technicians came to my home and installed the new equipment. The work was done in one day and the installers were as meticulous as any one I've ever had in my home, with regard to protecting the woodwork, carpet, and tile, as well as the clean up at completion. Also, the new return air grill was installed so carefully that no caulking or paint touch up was needed. A great job performed by highly trained folks. My former service company had estimated the cost of doing what Brown did for $6133 as costing $6480. Savings: $347. Buts that's not all. Their estimate was for an 80% efficient furnace, not the 95% efficient furnace installed by Brown. I'll save hundreds of additional dollars over the next several years on the cost of gas. But that's not all. The 80% efficient furnace did NOT qualify for the 30% tax credit, which the old company seemed unaware of, anyway. Total direct savings: $1847. For a $6133 job, that's quite a savings.
Description of Work: Brown Service Co replaced my 16 year old gas furnace, replaced the A/C evaporator coil (which was leaking freon) and installed an additional air return to improve air flow.

In the last couple of years I have been experiencing GFI interruption on various oulets inside my home, especially during heavy showers. Mike, the Browns service rep, checked all the GFI's, the breaker box and outlets both inside and out. He narrowed the problem to water getting in via the outside outlets which are 19 yrs old. He installed bubble covers and siliconed all 3 of the outlets and eliminated the problem. His work was done efficently and quickly, his demeanor was very professional. The only draw back to this service call was that Brown Services being a contract provider asks their reps to push service contracts for A/C units. While Mike was not pushy it did put me off a little bit since I had an electrical problem not A/C issues. Overall I don't believe I would call them back for another electrical issue. the service was good but it was apparent electrical is not the primary job for this company.

Response from Brown Service Co.
Thank you for your response and for the positive feedback. Concerning the information our technician shared about our "Service Agreement" I would like to first apologize that it came across a "sales pitch" and we will make every attempt to correct this issue. Although Brown Service both is both an HVAC and electrical service company, when you request service a properly licensed technician in THAT trade must be sent to your home. As the manager and state licensed master electrician for the company I can guarantee that your technician was in fact a fully licensed journeyman electrician with the State of Texas and at your personal request we can direct you to the state operated website for verification. In addition, the Service Agreement that was presented to you actually offers discount and priority service for BOTH electrical and HVAC service. Although you receive (2) preventative maintenance visits for your HVAC system, you receive a 15% discount on all repairs....electrical or HVAC. Also, you receive priority service for repairs in either trade. We feel this is a tremendous savings for ours customers and we do ask our technicians to make each customer aware of the potential savings, but we do NOT mandate nor condone a "sales pitch". As for what our "primary job" is....we are BOTH a fully state licensed electrical and HVAC contractor and the trade that you requested was electrical.....so for YOUR service call, our primary job was electrical. Hopefully this information cleared your concerns but should you have any additional questions or would like additional licensing information, please contact us a service@brownservice.net and I will address your concerns personally. Thank you for your input and hopefully we can improve our service by addressing your concerns.

I have been using them for the last couple of years. They are going to come out in a month or so to do the spring overhaul which is part of the cost. I love them. They are the only people I use. If I have got to wait to have somebody to come out, I will wait for them to come. Their prices are good. They are on time. They get in, do the job, and get gone. I work out of my house and I don't like them lingering around, and they don't. They are in and out. They get it done and they do it right. If I don't like something about a company, I don't have them come back and I will have these people come back any time.

From start to finish I was very pleased with the whole process--punctual, worked efficiently, and never appeared irritated with my various questions.(This is some times a problem as I am a woman--but I got no rolling of eyes, sighs, or sarcastic remarks). I will now be using this company to perform my yearly checks on my unit. I was extremely pleased and never felt like I was "being sold something". In fact a couple times when I asked if something else might need to be replaced they assured me not now. They solved my major problem with the smell of the attic coming into my house.
Description of Work: Performed an air quality check on my vents at my request and discovered leaks in my air return vents. Had previously had another company and had asked for a check of vents secondary to smell from new insulation in my home and they totally disregarded it could be my vents. Sold me a $300 unnecessary treatment. Brown Service Co. discovered the problem and solved my problem. Installed the new return air vents and for the first time in many years I feel a difference in the cooling and retention of air. Brown went above and beyond in assisting me--answered all questions and kept me informed all along the process from the air quality guy to the installers of the vents. After the installation of the vents the air quality guy came back and re-tested and even advised about some areas near some lights where he found were not sealed well to attic. The installers also drew my attention to a problem with my exhaust pipe from my vent-a-hood and advised I have someone check it out. They also installed all new grills in all my supply vents (others were 33 yrs old).

Found this company on the BBB listing. The woman who answered the phone was personable, friendly and professional. Mike showed up when scheduled. He listened to the symptoms I described and went right to his diagnosing. He upgraded one outlet from a 2-prong to a 3-prong and tried to clean up a breaker that was charred; he didn't have a replacement part with him, referred me to an electrical supply house. He is very experienced and knowledgeable about electricity. I was disappointed to have to pay over $224.61 for one outlet replacement and basically what amounted to an estimate for additional repairs which did not include/address additional capacity needs for a 3rd window unit a/c.
Description of Work: One circuit was cycling on and off without breakers tripping or fuses blowing. Mike checked the meter, fuse box and breaker box. Replaced one outlet from 2-prong to 3-prong. Recommended service upgrade.
