It included custom install and trim stain and general carpentry. He felt with all his contractors and made sure they showed up and finished their work on-time. I would not only recommend John but look forward to working with him on other home projects.

John went above and beyond to accommodate some changes I wanted in the project, and was cheerful and professional throughout the "can you do this, too?" stage. As this cutting board was a present for someone, I really wanted it to be perfect. It is personalized, and just a beautiful piece of board. He polished it to shine I think. It is beautiful! I have already ordered a second board for another Christmas gift. + -1 morePerfect! They even called with a suggestion for different wording for the board - made a lot more sense. Just got the board and it's absolutely gorgeous! We're pretty serious cooks and have been using an old bamboo board that's served us well but is very thin and worn out. Beautiful work!

+ 0 moreI wanted to make a built in bookcase for the study room in the house that we just purchased. We want it be made and installed before move in. I left a message to John and he called me back very quick, while he was driving to Austin to deliver to his customer! He came to my house on Saturday(as we were not available on weekdays). John gave us a price range after he measured the space and got the specs from us. John very professionally explained how the design and material chosen could impact the total price and he is willing to help us to get to a design that would meet our expectation and budget. In the next week, we exchanged a couple emails to discuss some details. He volunteered to render a few 3D design images bases on measurements and specs to get a look and feel of the bookcase. We also visited his workshop where he showed us some very sophisticated furniture he made. We are very impressed of his skills and the quality of those furniture. I am sure he would give us exactly what we wanted. The only reason we decided to go with another contractor was because he can get it done before we move in while that does not fit in John's busy schedule. I would recommend John if you want to get your custom furniture made in quality.

+ -1 moreDuring the great pleasure of getting to know John early on in the process, I came to realize that Lone Star is a small but rapidly growing enterprise. It was John's full intent and goal to complete my desk quickly and to my full satisfaction, which I greatly appreciated. He is a consummate pro. However, I wasn't too worried about having the desk completed on time. My focus was on being happy with the final product. So, when his business volume spiked up quickly, and another challenge or two came along for each of us, it was no problem to me that the timeline on my project was extended, which it was. So, even though we finished later than expected, I still rated Lone Star high for punctuality - I'm the one who gave a "green light" for it to run long. One other reason the desk was finished late had to do with my own inexperience with custom furniture, and a misunderstanding about what kind of finish I wanted the desk to have. John and Mike graciously worked with me to overcome this, however, and eventually refinished the entire desktop. They would not call the project "done" until I was fully satisfied. This no doubt impacted the profit realized on this project, but Lone Star's first priority is clearly their customer. I will definitely use Lone Star Artisans again, and defintely plan to buy one of John's beautiful cutting boards before long... maybe even an extra or two for gifts!
Description of Work: I had a rough design in mind for a custom desk. I met with Lone Star and 2 other custom furniture builders. John's was the better of the two quotes I received, but that wasn't what swayed me to use his services. He was immediately engaged by the challenges my design presented, and put the most effort and creativity into his quote. He was innovative but also very willing to listen to and consider my input. A major element of my desk included integrating various computer peripherals while coming up with ways to keep most of them hidden away when not in use, so the desk won't be cluttered and unsightly. While I don't think either of us are big "computer people," John is as familiar with the challenges they present as I am, which enhanced the design effort as well. The design is a rather large L-shape. I wanted a hutch on one side, which John also designed. (He created about 9 designs, actually, and we chose a favorite from those.) The desk & hutch are black walnut; drawers are soft maple. The drawer and hutch cabinet fronts are made of some beautiful "featured" black walnut from Pennsylvania. Everything has a solid, quality feel; the hardware looks great & the drawers & cabinets operate very smoothly. The desk also includes a hidden storage box on one side, accessed by a door in the desktop - a particularly challenging feature I requested. Finally, John and his cohort Mike also threw in a nice wooden cable guide running the full width of the desk, underneath the desktop, and a small extra shelf to hold the computer's battery backup. In the end, I have a beautiful, highly functional desk that I'm VERY happy with after more than two months of use. Thank you John & Mike!!

Description of Work: The owner was making cutting boards to give as Christmas gifts. When I saw how beautiful they were, I ordered one for myself and paid $150.00 for it. (Prices vary according to the style, thickness and type of woods used, the one I selected used very expensive wood). I showed it to my daughter and also to a friend and they loved it. I gave the friend a smaller cutting board as a Christmas gift, and my daughter ended up buying 2 more of them to use as gifts. I have seen similar cutting boards in a couple of retail stores that were priced the same as the ones at Lonestar Artisons, and they weren't nearly as nice. John is very creative and knowledgeable about various wood types. He will go out of his way to insure that he gives his customers the best quality products. I look forward to working with him on a bigger project in the future.

Description of Work: After researching several sources for a desk for my home office, i found LoneStar Artisans. I contacted them and we started on a custom desk. With guidance and suggestions about wood choice, I decided to have a mesquite and walnut desk made. Throughout the design and construction of my desk, LoneStar Artisans kept in close contact and allowed me to make many choices to further create a desk that fit my needs and personality. Each customization I made, John was informative and gave me pros and cons of all the choices. I recently picked up the desk and was very pleasantly surprised at the workmanship, quality, details, and overall product. The care and artistic talent that went into creating my desk was immediately evident. I now have a great desk that reflects my personality AND ended up costing less than a regular mesquite/walnut desk I found online.
