The A/C in my 30 year old home had gotten to where it just couldn't quite keep up with the plus 90 days. An examination of the inside unit showed ice formation. With that, I put in a call to Air Today expecting that this ancient system would be headed for the grave. After a through check of my system, the technician was able to tell me that the unit was fully charged with freon, was functioning through its cycles normally and that the cause of the less than stellar performance was a clogged heat exchangerin th inside unit. He explained that the "back side" (the intake side) of these exchangers was a bit difficult to get to so that routine cleaning of just the "front side" (the output side) would miss dirt that eventually clogged the exchanger. I was impressed that the tech would go into that much detail to describe the problem including a basic howto on what to do to fix theproblem. Being a DIY sort of person, I was very pleased by this approach. So for a relatively small of money, my A/C unit is working better than I remember. (I've lived in this house since 1989.)When it comes time to declare this unit actually dead, Air Today will be the folks I call to replace it.
Description of Work: The tech did a compete checkup of my A/C system in the course of which he found the cause of it's poor performance. He checked the freon level and the operating pressures and temperatures. And the air flow through the exchangers.

Overall, I thought the technician was excellent, informative and very helpful. After the work was done the price was presented to me as $59(trip fee) + $144(obtained from a worksheet the tech had) or $204 which I balked at. Since no parts were provided I responded politely that the maximum price should've been $59(trip fee)+1 hr labor($59 was quoted to me over phone) or a total of $120. When the tech called the office they told him the labor was $89/hr but in the end the price settled on was $103($59 trip fee + 1/2 hr labor @$89/hr) which I thought was fair. So the moral here is only pay for what you receive and be prepared to challenge the pricing if it doesn't make sense i.e. service cost = trip fee + labor rate/hr + part price. This goes for ANY vendor.
Description of Work: The signal wire from the thermostat to the A/C unit was chewed through so the thermostat was unable to notify the A/C unit to turn on. Although this was a simple fix the cause of the failure wasn't immediately apparent. The technician diagnosed the issue and corrected the problem.

Technician came quickly and assessed problem. Gave us a thorough explanation and showed us the problem.Wrote out several options. Made recommendations that seemed logical. The installers came the next morning and removed the old unit and replaced it (we opted to purchase a new energy efficient AC).They did a great job. Quick and good clean-up afterwards.

Would not do business with again. Deceptive Marketing Practices Our heater went out on a Saturday. I had a sense it was an ignitor that had recently been replaced but unfortunately the firm we originally used did not have any techs available that Saturday. They offered to send somebody out Monday but since it was cold that weekend and I have young children, I felt I needed to get it taken care of that day. I called around and based on reviews on Angies list called Air Today. The woman I spoke with told us they could come out same day and b/c we were angies list members they would waive the service charge and labor and "we would only pay for the parts" This sounded too good to be true and not a very fair deal to them since I knew that an ignitor is about a $30 part, so I offered that I would be happy to pay any labor but they said "no" that was their program. The tech came when he was supposed to on-time, though I was not home, but my wife was. When I came home I asked "did he fix it,?" she said yes. Did you pay him? She said "yes" but when I looked at the invoice I nearly fell over. The tech had charged us $262 for the ignitor. Underneath was written "Service charge -$133 "but then it was crossed out. I asked how long was he there, my wife said about 30 min. I never would fallen for this stunt, but my wife, who isn't very mechanical, didn't know what the part should cost. I called and complained and was told that a service mgr would call me on monday. On monday, the Svc Mgr called and when I explained that I thought we had been duped, he began to give me a lecture about how "no business could afford to stay in business if they just charged for parts." "Then why market it that way?" I asked. He admitted that the promotion was "confusing" (I would call it misleading if not, intentionally deceptive) and offered to reduce the fee to $208. Since they already had a check from me, I did not feel like I had a lot of bargaining power so I accepted the offer. He had suggested they would reword their marketing material so as to avoid the confusion. I have not checked to see if they would do that Note: my prior firm charged me $175 to replace the ignitor. It's ashame because this could have been a good review if they just would have been upfront about how they charge and not try to hide their charges in an inflated part charge. I would have been happy to pay a service call and even and extra charge for a saturday visit. I particularly felt angry because I felt like they took advantage of my wife's ignorance of the parts cost - like women who get overcharged at a mechanics. My view is if they are willing to act this way, they can't and should be trusted on other jobs and I would not use them again. Yes he offered to reduce the charge to make it write. But making it right would have been "yes, I'm sorry. I'll take the loss on this one and just charge you the true cost of the part."

Response from Betz Heating & Air, LLC
We are certainly concerned by this rating and report because clearly there was a misunderstanding with the communication of this particular service call. The customer did in fact call in after-hours on a Saturday and it was getting colder. The service technician that was “on-call” was dispatched to the home within the hour, the diagnosis revealed that we would need to replace a part and so the technician explained it to the customer and he replaced the part. Our wording on the ad “free service call with repair” is in fact that. A free service call is a free diagnostic charge, not free labor and free part. This was in fact told to the customer before a technician was dispatched to the home. When we finished the repair, the customer was only charged for the part which includes labor cost. The price of the part IS what it IS, it is not changed because of the customer’s appearance or anything. We do not treat any customer differently, regardless of gender. When the manager spoke to the customer on Monday, he apologized for the confusion and told him that we wanted make him happy and discounted the amount of the invoice even more. We thought the customer was pleased with this until receiving this report. It saddens us to know that the customer is still unhappy because that is certainly not our intent. We want to make all our customers happy, and this is especially why we took measures to get to the home on Saturday. Air Today does not practice deceptive marketing, we stand behind our work and pride ourselves on quality service at a reasonable price.

T hank you, Air Today for being so kind & understanding, after "WE SCREWED UP". My husband had neglected to cancel our service call for Wed. Due to being caught in the tornado in Forney TX., on his way home from Tyler, yesterday/Tues .(It truly was an honest oversight. He'd simply forgotten w/all the excitement). I do take my own shameful blame of this situation as well. I deeply, deeply regret not paying attention to the name of the co. that called this morning to confirm the appt. & let me know that a tech was on his way. I feel just awful that he drove all the way out here for nothing. We're both so very sorry & embarrassed for our errors. The Air Today Technician was so sweet, understanding, polite & ON TIME. I called at 11 in the morning, and was told that they would get to my house by 3... Such a nice change from other companies that just add you to the list and get there *eventually*. Turned out that Danny arrived around 1:30. Not bad! He immediately set about finding the source of the problem. He was able to get the house cooling again soon, and we were very pleased. Our system is less than two years old, so it's particularly frustrating when it doesn't work properly. Danny suggested that we should still be under warranty, and recommended contacting the installing company should further problems arise. I appreciate his honesty so much, I'd like to make this company the one I use regularly!

They responded quickly, even sending a serviceman to the condo on a Saturday with no extra charges. The serviceman called in advance and told me what the problem was and gave me two options and prices for repair. They completed the work and charged exactly what they had quoted. Unfortunately, my renter called to say that the A/C quit again within a week. After calling the company back they were prompt in sending the serviceman back and fixing the unit again. It has been trouble-free since that time. My only complaint is that after the second repair I contacted the company via email to ask what the second problem had been so I could keep a record of the A/C repairs. They never responded back to my question. Overall, I like this company. They were professional and prompt to do the service.

I was happy. Actually in shock over it all. Service was next day after my initial call. They were polite, asked about history, very honest and did great work. I would highly recommend them and I think I've found my go to A/C and Heating people.
Description of Work: My heat had not been working for quite a while. Another company had switched wiring up a couple of times and then said the relay was burned in my inside unit and quoted over $600.00 to fix it. Another company did nothing and said they wouldn't do anything but replace the unit and it would cost clost to $4000.00 to fix. Air Today came in and I told them that I expected them to tell me that they would be changing the unit, that to do what they needed to do. He looked said the wiring was completely wrong, bypassing the relay. He rewired, to test the relay. Then tested the relay and the AC and HEAT!!! started working. He charged me $120.00 for labor with no diagnostic fee (since I had found them on Angie's list) and said if the unit does go out they could do it for about $2200.00, just to give them a call.

We had three different estimates and one of them was $5000 more than what we ended up paying. We ended up paying about $7000 and one of the estimates was like $13000. My experience with Air Today was fine. They had like 4 guys doing the job. They were pretty professional the whole time. The guy who came to do the estimate was pretty flexible too. His price was a little better because he is actually a dealer of the equipment. He was able to offer a better price because he is an actual dealer and he also had some other discounts. It looked like the other company had the same unit, but the unit installed by Air Today was $1500 cheaper. Overall, I am extremely pleased with them. Their price was awesome. We didn’t pick the cheapest option, but we picked like the middle of the road option. The guy from Air Today was the only one who mentioned to us that certain ones that he was showing us still qualified for the federal tax credit. No one else told us at all that if we bought a furnace, we could get a tax credit. He was more informative than the other places. The quality of work looks good to me. They came and talked to us pretty quickly. The guy said that they try to respond more quickly to people who don’t have any air conditioning. They came when they said they would. We got them because they had good ratings and they lived up to the ratings.

My AC was blowing warm air and the temperature had risen to as high as 92 degrees in the house. Air Today had performed some work for me about 2 1/2 months ago for similar symptoms (blowing warm air) but ultimately different cause. Marty (the Air Today technician) came out and examined the AC unit and fan. Several wires needed to be replaced in the fan. It appears that the previous home owners used someone who put the wrong gauge of wires in the fan unit and they eventually burned out. One of the reasons I would definitely recommend Air Today is that Marty was willing to teach me how to maintain my AC unit as far as the proper steps to cleaning the fan (first time home owner). I'm sure any company could have fixed my problem, but the fact that Marty took the time to educate me about the AC unit sets this company apart from the rest. I highly recommend this company. I want to thank Marty for answering all of my questions and teaching me about maintaining my AC unit. Hopefully, the next time I run into Marty is at the Home Depot and not for a broken AC unit. Thanks!

I called because my A/C had stopped working during this miserable summer. They got a repair out to my house within 3 hours of my call. He was prompt, efficient and courteous. On a day when I would have done anything to get the stupid thing running he found it was simply a minor problem, fixed it and left within the hour, leaving me with-thankfully-a working air conditioner. A Wonderful experience,

I had been struggling with my home warranty's choice of AC companies for nearly 3 weeks after a motor blew on my air handler unit (inside unit). The first company took 3 days to get to my house and they promptly said I had an electrical issue (burned on/off switch). This turned out not to be entirely true. The warranty company then sent an electrician that never showed up. After that wasted day, they then sent a more reputable company a day later who said there was nothing wrong with the swtich but would change it anyway. After many days had gone by in Dallas in June/July with no AC, I begged the warranty company to let me hire my own company for reimbursement later. They dragged their feet for even more days. Meanwhile, the original AC guys came back to diagnose the obvious -- it was a motor problem. Now they had to submit a report to the warranty company within 24 hours in order to receive approval for repair. Every step of this process, from calling to scheduling a technician to receiving and approving repair work, took 24 hours each time at minimum! The report was not received in time for the warranty company to approve so I decided to hire my own company. Only then was the report finally received by the warranty company ... they promptly denied the repair claiming "dirt." I felt scammed because any tech would have seen "dirt" from the get-go. It took this long to come up with that? The filters have always been cleaned on time. All along I had asked for a more reliable AC company to no avail until I finally had enough. I am grateful to Angie's List and to Air Today. The company never used the excuse that "it's summer in Dallas and everybody wants their AC fixed ..." The respect they showed alone made me confident in their services.
Description of Work: A nearly 3-week struggle between the warranty company, AC technicians, electricians and poor quality service all around had my home baking in the Dallas heat for far too long. I found Air Today on Angie's List, read the reviews and found out they were east of where I work in Plano. I decided to pay them a visit instead of calling ... all while on hold with my warranty company which was still trying to locate the last AC technician who failed to file his report about my AC in time. Air Today immediately took my information down and said a serviceman will be calling me with a 30-minute lead time THAT SAME DAY. Wow, it's all I had been asking for. The other AC company that the warranty folks chose refused to give me a call at all. They insisted I wait for hours at a time for them to show up each time they scheduled a visit. Air Today sent Sean, who with a smile and professionalism diagnosed the problem, gave me a quote and promised to come back the very next day to make the repair. He would have done it then if he had the parts in his truck. Within 24 hours of contacting Air Today, my problem was fixed. Yes, they were on the expensive side but the work they did was good and the price will pay for itself within a year of having gotten rid of my warranty company -- which I did.

The call was handled very well from initial contact to resolution and I would certainly call them again. I had checked the price of gas previously and it ranged from $45 - $55 per pound, so I was pleased with $210 for 4 pounds. I asked for a follow-up call to quote for replacement of the unit, as we have had some problems with it, and the prices for that seemed rather high, compared to other quotes I have seen, but I would certainly consider them when I do get it replaced
Description of Work: Our a/c was not cooling over 4th July weekend, so i called Air Today on the Tuesday morning. They came out that evening and checked the system, and diagnosed a lack of gas. The tech also cleared the drain lines. The system is now working fine, and due to the Angie's list coupon, I was not charged for a call-out, and just paid for the gas.

I saw this provider on Angies List and decided to try them, especially with the free trip fee with service offer. The FIRST time they came out was early June. Service man #1 said I needed coolant - due to a leak. He asked me if I would like to see if adding coolant would do the job, at least long enough to get through the summer. I thought it would be worth a try - at least this time. We talked about looking at options, maybe even purchasing a new unit in the fall. The bill was 210.00, which included my discount for the service fee. I installed new filters for the entire house and all went well, for 10 days, when the upstairs unit stopped working (again), I called the same company and asked if they could send someone out to do an inspection (explaining I had just paid for service). I wanted to understand what was really going on, and the cost of repair. They sent Serviceman #2 out that same day. To his credit, he worked for quite a while, but I couldn't get any information from him. He was non-talkative, just kept moving from the attic to the outside unit. Finally, he came in from outside for the third time and said he had added coolant (what?). IF he had asked beforehand, I would have declined. I asked what did he think the issue was. He said 'probably' due to dirty filters coupled with being low on coolant (again?)'. (The filters were not dirty.) PLUS, he charged me a trip fee (89.95). When I asked 'why', he said the coupon for Angies' list members was only good with a MAJOR REPAIR, like a condenser. Cost: $210.00 (again)! I called the company and they confirmed the statement about a 'major repair'. I asked why would ANY company automatically add coolant for a second time in 2 weeks, when even I could see we could be at this same position two weeks later? However, I was told that they would "work with me" if I decided to let them 'fix' the issue with (yeah) a MAJOR REPAIR. Perhaps they could give me a partial credit or something. I agreed to let them send one of their 'senior' servicemen (#3) out to 'evaluate' the situation (NO Service Charge) and give me an honest appraisal of the situation and repair cost. I called the company the next day - they said they had not received the report yet., but would call me. I STILL haven't heard from them. Well, sure enough, 2 weeks later, the upstairs unit stopped working. Beware of this company and their COUPON! Also get estimates beforehand. Make it CLEAR that they need your permission to proceed with any work (even adding coolant). I feel they took advantage of me and my situation the second time.
Description of Work: Inspect both AC units, especially the upstairs unit, which was not cooling. Ended up adding coolant. Respectfully, he asked my opinion and I agreed. Update: 8/19/2011 Actually, the company has NOT contacted me - to this day! Not sure who they talked to but definitely not me (no other person lives here). I was disappointed that they would 'get me up and running' without my permission the second time. In fact, the expert that came out to inspect (after both technicians added coolant) said he was sorry that happened to me. They should not have replaced the coolant after such a short time. This indicated a FAST leak (my conclusion). I had another company come out only 10 days after their SECOND visit because, once again, the unit stopped cooling. I am still 'cool' one month later - the leak has turned 'slow' and I will definitely purchase a new unit this year from this new company. In fact, I plan to replace BOTH units in the fall. Thanks, guys, but NO THANKS to you.

In response to this members comments, Air Today would like to start off by stating that this is an unfortunate set of circumstances. As with any system that has a leak, it is very difficult for a technician to tell a customer how long a system will last. It could last one day or a year, depending on the size of the leak. We did in fact go to this members home for a service visit on June 11th, 2011 and checked the system. It was diagnosed low on refrigerant and the technician discussed this with the customer the customer agreed to add refrigerant at that time and did not want us to perform a leak search. The coupon states FREE service call with repair, no service fee was charged to this customer – they were only charged for the refrigerant added to the system. 2 weeks later the customer called back in and we returned to the home to find the system iced up and had to return the following morning. A smaller amount of refrigerant was added to the system. In order to get customers some cool air flow in these extreme temperatures we do extend the courtesy of getting them cooling until a permanent solution such as a unit change out can be made. When a customer is charged for refrigerant, they are credited that amount charged toward the replacement of the unit and/or system. When the senior technician came out to assess the system, it was actually cooling at that time. The customer was in fact contacted to see if they wanted to replace the unit and the member indicated that she did not have the funds to do a replacement at this time. If the customer (as we do with all customers), call back in a reasonable amount of time and do the change out, we still honor the credit of the funds towards a new unit. We stand behind all the work we do and the coupons listed in our advertisement. Unfortunately in this situation the clarity of the service, coupon and what was covered from beginning to end was not understood fully and we do apologize for that.

My A/C had been on the fritz for a few months, going out all together a number of times. I normally used a different service but they were unable to come out the day I needed them. I have two kids and am pregnant - not a great idea to not have air conditioning, even for one day, so I looked on the List and found Air Today. I called and they were able to come out in a few hours. Repairman let me know that is was the capacitor again (had gone out twice before) and that it should have had something called a Hard Starter attached to it. It would have been almost $500 to replace the two so I asked him if it would make more sense to just get a new unit. He said that since ours was over 15 years old it would absolutely make more sense; at this point we were just putting band aids on it. He gave us quite a few options but I NEVER felt like I 'had' to pick one or the other. After choosing the least expensive choice he let me know that it would work just fine for us. I truly appreciated that he didn't try to worry me in to a more expensive unit. He put in a temporary hard starter and capacitor for no cost to tide us over until the new unit could be installed - very much appreciated. Air Today was able to come out the next day to put in the new unit. The two men were personable and performed the work quickly and cleanly. They made sure everything was working before they left.
Description of Work: - Service call to understand problem - Temporary replacement of parts (capacitor and hard starter) - Replacement of air compressor (A/C unit)

Called around 12:45 and they had a service guy out by 2:00. Kevin got there did tests on both units and came back and told my honestly what needed to be done. He did not try to sell me up or talk down to me just because I was a woman. The person I had out here last year tried to sell me a whole new unit for my upstairs but Kevin told me that was not needed that it was a good unit. I will definiely be using this company again.
Description of Work: Test done on both outside units and the upstairs unit drain. Checked the coils on the inside unit. Came back in and explained what needed to be done and about how much it would cost. Very through.

I called Air Today at 1:00pm on a hot summer day. The receptionist was excellent and squeezed me in for that afternoon. She called me when the technician was on his way and he arrived by 5:30pm that same day!! He went up in my attic and discovered that the drain going to an upstairs bathroom was clogged and the overflow water was exiting the house by the emergency spout. Shawn could have made me call a plumber but he took apart the piping under the sink and cleaned it out so the water could flow freely. I was charged a flat $89 fee for them to come out to the house and a flat $89 to clean out the drain. I was very happy with the service and would call them again.
Description of Work: My air conditioner was still working but it was leaking water from the spouts on my roof. I wasn't sure what was wrong but I knew I had to have someone come out and look at it.

I was very pleased with Chris and his approach to the problem and the solution. In an earlier experience with Kevin, the same attitude of carring and competence was there. Two standout guys. I trust them implicitly in their work. Not so with the front office. The reception desk, the dispatcher and the schedulers do not spell out everything accurately. The price and the payment acceptance rules change each time I talked to someone. The actual bill changes once the work starts too. I do not think that their final prices are accurate (too high) or fair, except for the fact that the technicians are top drawer.
Description of Work: Chris located the source of an overflow leak in the condensor unit that caused water drippage in the ladies room. The A/C unit winin the space above the false ceiling of the ladies room. He quickly identified the problem whihc was the result of a poor quality installation when this open shell space was fit out for office space. He corrected the defect and tested in several dimension to ensure that all was working correctly. A very competent fellow and very nice person to do business with.

They arrived at the planned time and worked non-stop for the next 8 hours..only taking a short break for lunch. They were professional, explained the equipment to me,left my house as clean as (if not cleaner) than when they arrived. The owner Danny stayed to show me how to set the thermostat and make sure the equipment worked correctly. The office staff called me each time they were to came out to notify me that someone was on the way. I believe the company is very honest and trustworthy and woud refer them to my friends.
Description of Work: I had an air conditoner and furnace replaced.

Anyone who watches "Holmes on Homes" knows the slogan. "Do it right...the first time". This pretty much describes Kevin the technician; he was very professional, friendly and knowledgeable. Here is my story. About 6PM on a Friday after getting home, I noticed the house was kinda warm. I thought it was because it was the hottest day of the year. As it turned out, both outdoor heat pumps were not operating. I called the next morning about 10am and Kevin arrived around 1pm (only a couple of hours). Later, I learned they have 24 hour service. He was able to get both working within 30 minutes. Not only that, he check the coolant levels, noted down all of the units' vitals, even checked the air filters (which we promptly replaced, my bad). Thanks for making sure we stay up operating and looking out for us.
Description of Work: Both air conditioner units decided to fail on a Friday at 6:00pm. From phone call for weekend service until the house was cooling was no longer than a couple of hours. Excellent service and the price was not that bad.

The company was responsive, all staff were extremely professional, and Kevin (a service technician), came to the house the day we called. Kevin completed the inspection of all units, including the clearing of drain lines missed by other companies. He gave us a detailed explanation of the situation with the bad unit and gave us several options (from repairing to replacing unit), pros and cons of each option, and prices of each. There was no pressure to select any option. After answering our questions we chose to have the compressor unit replaced. This was primarily because of the age of the unit. The installation crew came late that afternoon, which required the crew to work overtime, which we appreciated since we had out of town guests staying with us. The installation crew replaced the unit that Kevin had ordered. When I went to check on the progress I questioned the unit they had replaced as I did not think it was the one for the upstairs. After, further discussion and testing it was determined the had been instructed to replace the 3 ton unit when they should have replaced the 4 ton unit to fix the upstairs lack of cooling problem. Kevin was called and he accepted complete responsibility for the error and said he would make things right for us. However, they would not be able to replace the other unit until the next morning 6/2/11. First thing the next morning the crew came and installed the correct unit and the cooling problem was fixed. For the error Kevin accepted full responsibility and gave us the following offer to make everything right and us happy: Charged the same amount for the 4 ton unit, including labor that he had charged for the 3 ton unit. Charged us the company's cost for the 3 ton unit and no labor cost. (Old unit was 11 years old and near its useful service life) One year free service contract for all 3 units for performing semi annual inspections of the units. With the exception of the error that was made we were impressed with the level of service from Air Today. When the error was brought to their attention they immediately accepted responsibility, apologized for the error and inconvenience it caused, and offered to do what was necessary to make things right for us. Their offer was fair and we accepted it. Had they not been so professional the score on quality and professionalism would have been significantly lower. We will continue to do business with Air Today. I would recommend them to any person who needs professional heating and A/C work done. It was refreshing to have a company accept responsibility for their error, apologize and make us comfortable with a fair offer to compensate us for our inconvenience.
Description of Work: Air Today was called because of recommendations on Angies List. We called Air Today to fix the upstairs Air Conditioning, which was not cooling, and to do a semi-annual inspection of all 3 heating and A/C systems in the house on 6/1/11. 2 of the units were 11 years old and one was 2 years old.
