Description of Work: Hired originally to caulk a full bathtub with ceramic tile surround and a shower stall with seamless pan and cultured marble sides, and vertical covered seams, glass door frame. Cost for the special was $99 for 1.5 (two men) or 3 hour (1 man) service. Comments below: | |1. The two men caulked only what I pointed out. Later we discovered other cracks. Professionalism, in terms of finding what we may have missed, is ranked a D, but the men were truly polite, raising it to a C. We had to have them back to fix areas we found later, one issue possibly being a cause of water damage to drywall on the wall adjacent to the vertical cultured marble wall in one location we had been experiencing. During the call back, ONE man came, and he produced more work in an hour than the two did in 1.5 hours. And, the man caulked thoroughly and neatly. And, no more water damage. |2. Punctuality. Being too early is as bad as being too late. The men came over an hour ahead of schedule with no call to ask if it was OK. I was unable to take my post-workout shower as a result. I was informed by the company owner that Angie's List did not provide phone numbers, which I assumed they would have. They were a tad bit late on the call back, but the repair person called in a timely manner , so that could be an "A". |3. Price. Had the area been caulked well the first time, the price would have been worthwhile and two men were not needed. This was dinged a bit because the gentleman offered to remove part of the wall to see if there was water from the shower head behind the wall doing the damage. I asked if he would be able to repair a small leak, and he said yes. Turned out, $325 or so plus tax later, that there was no small leak and the leak was from weak caulk and possibly a pinhole leak in the caulk on a vertical seam (visible and not repaired the first time) contributed to water leaking between the cultured marble wall and the pan's lip. So, I asked if some of that could be refunded because no plumbing was done. $325 for 45 minutes of work to remove a 4 x 4 section of drywall, remove (and damage) trim-- don't do it. If in doubt, make sure that the area dries well, THEN caulk, then see if the moisture continues. Expensive lesson. | |I think this is a service they offer as a spin off of their tile work. They are not plumbers. If used, ensure that you insist that ALL seams are caulked, all mold removed (had to tell them that in the callback as well) as the caulk will not hold, and areas to be caulked are cleaned well, again to ensure a tight seal. This is where inexperience in this particular application may come into play. | |The owner was slow to respond to my written concerns (six days, maybe?), but the return visit was done in a timely manner. After this all happened, I read the reviews, good and bad, so I feel that for this particular application-- caulking of shower and bath stalls--this rating is justified. I think the men in the field have capacity for continually improving, however, as they learn the nuances not only of the act of caulking, but also the prep work and inspection required before apply caulk.
