I don't remember the exact date we called Summerlin, but they came out the next day. They were very punctual and professional. Their bid was too high for us to have the work done. We opted to do it ourselves and saved a considerable amount of money. Still, they were quick about responding to our request and that was very much appreciated.
Description of Work: We called Summerlin for an estimate on landscaping our back yard to improve drainage.

Mr. Summerlin responded quickly to my e-mail and came out the same day to do an estimate. They came out 2 days later to do the job and got the job done in a timely manner (same day). They did a very nice job and had to overcome some obstacles like uneven ground and underground power/gas lines. He was very careful to stay within my tight budget offering ideas for alternative solutions. He is knowledgeable in all types of interior/exterior home improvement/repair besides fencing and landscaping and will do additional work in the future as my budget allows.
Description of Work: Added fence-line to an existing fence and added to the existing fence with pickets on opposite side and retainer boards for keeping dogs in.

Sean arrived promptly and gave me a good estimate. He was very knowledgable about the plants/trees etc in our yard. He knows so much about the area and what plants work and don't work. He kept me informed of mulch choices (environmentally friendly), pavers, walkway, etc. He was very helpful in our lawn restoration. My neighbors all love the transformation....and several has asked for his advice on their own yards. We will definitely use him again
Description of Work: tree pruning, landscaping, mulch, pavers, walk redo, lawn restoration. We bought the house in June of 2011. The landscaping was nice but starting to become overgrown....6 months later it was worse. We are new to the Houston area and I have used Angies' list for all of our contractors here.

Lousy There were late, they did not perform the work and the person they sent was unqualified to do the work
Description of Work: I used them via a coupon I purchased from Angie's List. The coupon expressly said for them to come out, do an evaluation of our sprinkler system for the flower beds, make any adjustments etc. Well it took days and days for them to get here. Finally when they did arrive, some kid in a pickup truck with his girlfriend riding with him got out and said I'm here to look at your irrigation system. I explained that I thought some of the heads need tweaking because the flow of water was not hitting the target. He walked around and tried to forcefully turn one of the heads until I stopped him. He then proceeded to tell me it would be around $200 for them to adjust the heads. I was furious. I called Angie's list to get a refund on my coupon and they declined, said I needed to take it up with the Company. I called Summerlin and the owner said they just got overwhelmed and he admitted the kid that came out was NOT an irrigation specialist.

I liked the guy. He did a good job. There was no follow-up and that was a little disappointing. I called him a few times and I haven't heard from him since he did the work. I wouldn't recommend him because there was no follow-up. There were some things that I wanted to be followed up on, but it just didn't happen; so I probably wouldn't recommend him. I liked the work, but I just didn't hear from him again. Everything was above average. He did well in the beginning, but then I couldn't connect with him again. He was here when he was supposed to be.

Sean Summerlin is the owner of the company. They were very pleasant to work with. They did it timely. I was pleased with the work. As for quality of their work the deck that they did for me was not that great and a year later it needed decent maintenance on it. They used screws and nails and that was a problem. Probably I would use them in the future.
Description of Work: I had Summerlin Landscaping a year ago to do a little wooden deck for me.

Shawn visited the property, discussed what he would do with my father and me and gave us an excellent price. The work was done promptly and I was delighted with the results. He also put me in touch with an excellent irrigation system repair company, The Rain Man. Shawn was very up front about the fact that he could do minor repairs to a sprinkler system but did not have the expertise to totally rework one. The irrigation system had been connected to a neighbor's well but the City of Houston was demanding that the well could not longer be shared so the system had to be reconnected to city water.
Description of Work: The work involved cleaning up the neglected landscapping of my father's 1.5 acre property in Kings Forest. There was a great deal of trimming, recreation of flower beds, re-landscapping a large area around the large car park area. Because of my father's disability, the property had not had the landscapping maintained for approximately five years prior to hiring Shawn and his crew.

Sean and his assistant arrived at 7:15 am. At that time, my husband and I showed Sean around to show him what we would like him to do. Before we had purchased an Angie's list Big deal for $99 that covered up to 4 hours of work, my husband and I decided that we wanted the drywall repaired in both the kitchen and garage plus a little handman help for other things. When we showed him the closet, my husband mentioned that he would like to have the closet painted and new shelves put in for a future time. Sean said he would have time to do it that day and so we agreed to it. Sean is very easy to talk to and he even gave me some very good pointers in painting. He would make a good woodshop teacher. Despite his good points, I felt like he was not good in managing his time, well. Also during the day, he and his assistant had to go to another house in the area to do some work. He left my house around 5;30pm and still didn't have the work completed. The following week he sent out a couple to finish up the work. They arrived sometime between 8 and 9 am to finish up the work. Most of the work had been done except some drywall repair and painting. The couple ran out of pure white paint that I had provided for them to paint the walls and shelves,so they went to buy some more paint. Between 3 and 4 pm, they told me the job was finished. When they showed me the closet, they told me they grabbed the wrong paint. Instead of pure white, they got antique white. So my walls are pure white and my shelves are antique white. They also didn't paint under the shelves. They asked me what I thought. I said " it was okay". I felt like it was less than professional on the painting and I just didn't want them to stay any longer even though they were nice. I bought some paint and I will repaint everything myself.
Description of Work: Repaired and painted over drywall damage in garage and closet. Added some woods shelves in closet. Also painted shelves and walls in closet. Installed water purifyer in kitchen sink and moved refrigerator and painted wall behind refrigerator.

They came in response to one of the online offers. We contacted him for this work and they sent out an employee. Fortunately while he was working here at my home trying to do the repairs, he had a medical emergency and we had to call the ambulance and take him to the hospital. So the work never finished and some of the trails were left here. Then I contacted the owner of the business who eventually came out and picked up the material and stuff but the process of work that was supposed to be done, that is the seat portion of the swing which was all wooden was over sprayed had to be taken back. He was going to refinish it and in fact he was trying to tell me that it was a stain but it was the paint that was over sprayed. The work that was supposed to be done was to power wash the wood which they did and then restain it which was only partially done because the guy got ill in between of all of that. And also he had just over sprayed with black color paint which was used for the metal chain and it also ended up on the pavers in the bottom and it was a mess. The whole thing that I started with his office was that I had a wood rock at the ground level and the owner said that he would put in wood filler in there and put flashing so that I wouldn’t have any problem and none of that stuff was done. The work was never completed. I got finally my swing back before Christmas. I gave up finally calling him and but I just gave because I had tried a couple more voice mails to him to come out and finish the job but he never did. So work is not completed but I know that I owe him a little bit more on the total price. When all this was going on of his employee not coming and finishing the job and finally he coming out and admitting that it wasn’t complete now, I didn’t pay him the last $100 and whatever money I sunk into it was only because that I hired this guy based on Angies list recommendations as far as the special. Of course when he came out and said that there was something to be done, I admitted to it and I wanted him to do it but the work wasn’t completed. So I didn’t have a positive experience with them what so ever. When I saw his rating it was very nice and I might be the only one who had this problem but for me the overall experience matters. When he came back to look at the status of the job it was clear to anybody as to where the stain was applied and where it wasn’t. His employee didn’t even have a ladder when he came out and he finally took one of our chairs to reach the wood and we could clearly notice the areas where he couldn’t reach and he didn’t apply the paint. The owner was trying to tell me that the work was completed but it was just how the wood was absorbing the stains. I felt like someone was insulting and I didn’t try to tell anything to him that time because I know that it was a small job and it would cost for him to come out. I would not use them again in the future.
Description of Work: I used Summerlin Landscaping in September of last year. They did initial inspection of sprinkler system first and then additional work was rehabilitation of wooden swing. They also power washed the wood.

Waste of time and money. After numerous attempts to get the guy round having already paid for the deal he arrived and proceeded to wander round the garden supposedly adjusting the spinklers. He said he could do this without me and I watched from an upstairs window whilst he wandered around the garden on his cell phone the whole time, he then told me I needed some fixes and gave me a quote. Didn't get back to him, went to another company who laughed openly at the estimate and actually charged me less than the Angies List Special Deal and fixed the problems. Never again!

It didn't happen in one day which is why we weren't happy with them. He started work and stopped for several days. He came back started again for a day or two. He left everything undone in the front. He also left his equipments and bags of trash out there. It was a week later; before he came back to do some work. My home owners association contacted us about cleaning it up before he got back to finish the work. We then found out that instead of finishing the stone footpath, which I wanted it about five feet, he had made it about four feet. He had dumped the rest of stones, the concrete and some bricks up against the utility box in the front yard where they come and service everything for the block. He had covered the dumped stuff there with mulch and we didn't know about that. When the utility company came to service the box, they couldn't get in to the box and we had to dig it out. We weren't happy. He didn't finish mulching the front yard. We hired him to sod but he didn't sod all of it so there were patchy areas. He asked for partial payment upfront and then a week later he asked for more. We paid him twice before even he finished the work. We paid him before he even started which we have not done with anyone before. Some of the work he did was excellent but some of it, we didn't understand. His price was not the lowest or highest, it was at the mid range. We weren't really happy with their quality at all. It took about three weeks for him do it which should have been done in three days. He said he had some family problems and didn't get anyone out here to finish it. When we first got him, he was very responsive, answered questions and he was here promptly but as the work did not progress he was less responsive. He has not done any follow up with it at all. His punctuality was at first really good but it got worse when time went on. I think dumping the trash and covering it with mulch was not professional. He told me that he will check back with me in about a week or so to see if we needed to finish up something or anything I had requests about. We called him and left messages but we haven't heard from him. We had several come out to give bids and he was just of mid range. We still need a landscaping company to come in and do this routine maintenance every week.
Description of Work: Summerlin Landscaping came out about three months ago to resod the front, take down a tree, for weeding and mulching through the flower bed in the front yard. They also did a small stone path between two oak trees.

We are sorry to hear the above comments. We do not agree with much of the above comments. I did not realize the member wanted all the services done in one day. In fact to do a quality job it would have been very difficult to get it all done in one day. Even though we do not agree with much of the comments, we do ask that the member forgive us for our mistakes. We will work as a company to do better for the future. What I received was nothing close to a full sprinkler tune-up. The gentleman (cannot remember his name) was very nice, went around, turned on all the sprinklers, and scribbled some notes, made some very slight adjustments to a couple of the sprinklers. I would point out bare spots not covered and he would comment yes. Spent about 30 minutes (while his family was waiting in the truck) and then told me it would cost me $300 for his guys to come out and replace some of the sprinkler heads. I I asked several times what am I getting here, just an estimate for services? He said yes. It was VERY deceiving to call this a full sprinkler tune-up. To have to pay to replace heads is one thing -- there were plenty of sprinkler head adjustments he could've and should've made...but he kept saying that when his guys come they will make sure it's all done right. When I asked for the written estimate what i got was some scribbles on the back of a piece of a paper with a total. Nothing broken out or spelled out -- it was quite unprofessional. In addition, I told him I would need to think about it, and he indicated that the price was only good for that day. This was clearly a high pressure sales tactic. Thank goodness I only paid $48 -- which is still more than the service I received. I ended up calling another irrigation service who came out, spent about an hour doing all kinds of adjustments including changing out sprinkler heads and charged half of what this company wanted. My lesson learned: be wary of Angie's List Big Deals -- if something seems too good to be true, it generally is!
Description of Work: I signed up for a "Full Sprinkler Tune-up" as one of Angie List's "Big Deals'. Here is what was offered: " Summerlin Landscaping, a highly rated service provider on Angie's List, is offering a full sprinkler tune-up for only $47.50 to our members! This service is normally priced at $95, saving Angie's List members $47.50!"

As per usual and as you can read from other reports here, Sean starts out great, but then little (or not so little)problems go unfixed and this hurts his professionalism and quality scores. He is not detail oriented, but is more concerned with a broad picture of what he thinks the job is supposed to be and this doesn't usually coincide exactly with the homeowner's idea . The shed turned out great (except matching paint color) as did the gate with minor adjustments to the latch. The fence looks great as well, but in the process, they broke a sprinkler head and ruined the nice look/finish of the previous drainage work they did a few months prior. (These were in proximity to the fence.) I also found several good size pieces of old concrete and a couple of 2 foot pieces of 4 x 4 posts from the previous fence in my shrubs. Sean promised to match the paint color to the existing shed, but instead used some old white paint that he already had. He also used some of my shovels and extension cords out of the shed, which surprised me since he markets himself as a landscaper.
Description of Work: Repaired rot on an outdoor shed and rehung the doors. Installed a face board to prevent/slow further rot. Painted shed. Replaced privacy fence and anchor posts and made it taller/sturdier. Reused most of old pickets. Also rebuilt a privacy gate on other side of house. Stained privacy fence and gate. I paid for 2 coats of stain, but I have no way of knowing if 2 coats were used since I wasn't there when work was done.

The work started out with good and quick progress. Finishing the work was a problem. A small tree in front died, was removed and not replaced. A new shrub installed in back yard died and was removed but not replaced. Charged additional to remove old pavers and stones. Large gaps in the timbers used to build the planters. Irrigation nozzles covered by stones. I had been going back and forth with Sean since October 14th. Last communication was November 19th and as usual, Sean promised to take care of the dead shrub and planters. Have not heard from him since. Very disappointed; you spend nearly $9,000 and you expect quality, and good service, no the run around.
Description of Work: Front Yard: -Replace all plants along front foundation & left side of home -All front foundation beds will be amended with planting mix and finally with mulch -New Flagstone pathway to be installed and replace existing stone pathway Back Yard: -Moss rock to be installed around edge of beds -3 trellises to be installed -Walkway from corner gate -All material to be removed & new plants added. -All irrigation will be inspected & adjusted to work properly Other: - Power wash front walkway and stain or paint -Power wash gutters -Planter boxes in back yard for growing vegetables

These people in my opinion are incompetent. They never arrived when they said they would. The sprinkler system is in worse condition now than before they came. The system keeps tripping the ground fault circuit breaker. I am disappointed that Angie's List featured them as a "Big Deal". I thought that only high quality firms would be offered that opportunity.

Initial meeting to go over plan and made choices of plants which were written on proposal - settled on price and requested down payment on initial visit of $1,000 - no discount given for Angie's List referral - determined 1/2 on start date and 1/2 upon completion, then asked for additional funds before completion which I had hoped would go towards purchasing the plants I requested; Gazebo built is terrific & concrete work done was great, except for area that was holding standing water from rain was promised to be corrected and is not; None of the plants I requested and we agreed upon were brought in and when I noticed weed barrier not being laid, he used what I had purchased and then used mulch bags that are white plastic and show through the mulch; Promised to mulch all beds, then used 5 bags of mulch I had purchased and was stored in my garage - several plants were planted on top of weed barrier instead of in the dirt; At one point he told me the job was completed, they still had to install a gate, finish the gazebo, power wash and stain wood on hot tub, fix standing water issue and I requested plants to be planted into the ground not on top of weed barrier; Electric breakers were blown twice and I was not contacted, but found out when I came home to check on progress; When I still could not obtain the plants I requested instead of shrubs, I requested he not perform the final job on the hot tub and called the job complete; Was not provided a guarantee or warranty on work performed; Very unsatisfied that the plants we had agreed upon were not used and when I brought this up, was told the yard looked great, which was not the point - it did not look great to me and now I am having to install the plants I already paid for to this contractor.

We respect all our clients and their opinions on various matters. When we do work at a home, we view that home as our own home and treat it as such. At times because we are imperfect, problems arise on both ends. I view these times as an opportunity to show the homeowner that I care about their home and the investment they have made. At times some homeowners do not realize how much I care about the work being done at their home or how much personal interest is being taken in their project. I know in my heart I care about each members job and it shows. Respectfully, Sean Summerlin

They didn't come to that appointment. I called them to see why, they apologized and scheduled a second appointment with me. They failed to show up for that one as well. First the guy Sean Summerlin sent out arrived an hour and a half late. Then he simply walked around our yard and made notes, telling us we'd be called the following Monday with an estimate. My husband asked if he wasn't going to make any adjustments to our sprinkler system or anything. He said no. Disbelieving, I called and talked to Sean Summerlin. "What was your expectation?" he asked. "A sprinkler system tune-up, like it says on the coupon," I answered. Summerlin agreed to come out the following Monday. Sean arrived, went over what we could expect with me, which included adjusting the heads, and then went through the yard, watched the sprinkler system for a little while, and did NOTHING. He didn't adjust a single head, only handed me an estimate for $277 for work he said we needed. When I said that sounded high, he said he usually does commercial work and he knows he's expensive. I asked why he hadn't adjusted anything, not a single sprinkler head, and he said everything in our yard worked perfectly except the heads that needed to be replaced. I pointed out a dry spot in the yard, and he told me it was getting watered. I sent him on his way, disappointed that I'd apparently paid $50 for not a tune-up but an estimate. What we got certainly wasn't a tune up. Today, I had someone else out. The estimate was free. In less than an hour, he adjusted the heads (yes, they needed it) then did the work we needed. The total bill was less than $100, and it everything that was on Sean's estimate and more except one sprinkler head Sean said we needed moved. I didn't think we did and either did the repairman today. If Summerlin usually does just commercial work, why did they offer a coupon to homeowners on Angie's list? Would anyone believe that a yard that hadn't been worked on in two years didn't have one sprinkler head that needed an adjustment? This was a rip off. Obviously, he made no money coming out here twice, but all I got for my $50 was the inconvenience of waiting for him to come and a sky-high estimate. I wouldn't have him back, and I won't recommend him to friends.
Description of Work: We bought a deal through Angie's list that was billed as a "50 percent off full sprinkler tune-up." We'd had sprinkler system tune ups in the past and they'd included adjusting heads, etc., but anything above that, after checking out the system, we'd paid extra for. The usual cost was about $100, so at 50 % off, the $50 we paid sounded right.

I am very glad to hear the member found someone to help solve her problem. I enjoyed talking with the member, even offering advice on some other problems she had with pest on some of her plants. It is unfortunate that the member did not like my recommendations. I understand that at times their are differences in opinions in various situations, but that does not mean I do not provide quality work, sound advice, and trustworthiness. I hope this member will forgive us for our High Bid and will give us another chance in the future for more work. Respectfully, Sean Summerlin

2 No Shows 3rd time the owner said he would personally come and still did not show. Someone else called for him @ 10 and said he could not come. (ETA was 9:00-10:00). I am disappointed with the responsiveness and punctuality. There just seemed to be scheduling errors on their end.
Description of Work: I attempted to hire them for sprinkler inspection but there were several failed attempts to meet with them.

We apologize for the scheduling errors, but the inspection was performed. At times the member might live in a certain area, but we might not have a employee working in that area which creates scheduling difficulties.

I did not use them because the price they quoted me was high. It was not accurate for what I wanted done. They were on time. That was the only contact I had with them. They were good though. They were responsive as well.
Description of Work: I got an estimate from Summerlin Landscaping two months ago.

You called him on 9/1 and he said he would call back that afternoon, never called back. Called him again on 9/3 and he said he would call back within two hours, never did. Called back on the 8th and requested a refund but never heard back from him.
Description of Work: They were suppose to do the full sprinkler tune-up.

Response from Summerlin Landscaping
Of course it always sad to see a negative report, although this is our first one. I have left voice mails with the member showing our concern over the situation. One of our employees was dispatched to the member, but the member had already made up their mind not to have the service. We welcome the member to contact us in the future for any more service that might be needed. Hopefully they will forgive us for us not being able to fulfill their current needs. We strive each day to take care of our customers needs and hopefully along the process offer some positive and encouraging thoughts. Respectfully, Sean Summerlin
