They did something in the attic, they had to come out multiple times, and the problem wasn't getting solved. After they finally got it to work I went to the attic to check and it looks like a science project. There is material that looks like tin foil on it and I'm not sure how long it will last. When I called to voice my concern and tell them I wouldn't be using them again they told me "that's ok we have enough business anyway."
Description of Work: We hired them to repair our air conditioner that wasn't cooling right.

We called on a Friday for someone to come out and give us an estimate for blowing in additional attic insulation. A technician was supposed to come out Monday at 3pm. No one came out on Monday or called. We decided to give them the benefit of the doubt and called on Tuesday to find out what happened. The gentleman on the phone was very apologetic and wanted a second chance to earn our business so we agreed to a second appointment Friday at 5pm. At 4:30pm we received a call to tell us the technician was running late and would 6,6:30 be ok. We had plans Friday night so that would not work. They rescheduled one last time. Someone was supposed to be at the house at 9am Saturday. Once again, no one showed and no one called. We won't be rescheduling with them or recommending them to anyone.
Description of Work: We wanted an estimate for additional blown in attic insulation.

We were having problems with one of our thermostats and called ARS. We've used them several times and they have installed one of our air-conditioners. On the plus side, you can get them to come out quickly, even on an evening or weekend. The scope of this job was small - just to replace a programmable thermostat. They opened up their "standard pricing" book and showed me that it would be $387 for the materials. Labor was not included. I passed and installed my own with the same model that was already there for $48. Their mark-up on parts was just incredible.
Description of Work: Evaluation of a broken thermostat.

The technicians were professional and did an excellent job, unfortunately when it came to be presented with the invoice the trouble started as it was not the same as the estimate we were given by the saleswoman. She promised 20% off the estimated price of $2600 the invoice was $2460, even with poor mathematics the figure didn't match! Called the saleswoman to verify what she had promised in her home visit, that if we went ahead right away she could give us an additional 20% off......she completely backtracked and said no it was only 20% off the solar vent. This was just a basic lie. Spoke with the manager who promised he'd call back the following Monday to resolve, needless to say he didn't and because they had our bank card number they just went ahead and took the disputed total from our account.....kind of illegal since I had not signed off the invoice and specifically wrote on it that the price was disputed. In all a terrible experience, this company work on behalf of Home Depot...we are currently in contact with Home Depot through our solicitors, they seemed oblivious to any problems so clearly this installation contractor didn't tell them of a problem. If anyone still wants to use this company then all I can say is when their salespeople give you a written estimate and then just verbally say if you go ahead we'll give you 20% off...get it in writing or they will rip you off too.

We have used ARS for 5 years or more to do plumbing, stove, refrigerator, washer repair, drain cleaning, etc. Our experience has always been positive. In price comparisons, they have always been average or below. From the ladies answering the phones, to the repair men themselves, each person has been polite, professional, and competent. No one has ever left a mess. If someone is going to be late, I have received a call BEFORE the time they were due and an apology for running late. I feel very comfortable knowing if I have a problem around the house, ARS has someone who can fix it!
Description of Work: There was no charge last time because we had a contract with ARS for a follow-up on our AC/Heatineg unit. Our unit is getting old, but instead of trying to sell me a new unit, they checked, did a little cleaning and complimented the installer on what a great job he had done (that gentleman retired). Both the heat and the air conditioning checks, 6 months apart, were handled on time with no mess or inconvience to me.

In Houston/ Katy area go with a local company use Fireproof Contractors if you want a Radiant barrier installed.
Description of Work: I made a call to the company and set up a date for a sellsman to visit. The salesman was supposed to meet me after work at 6:00 PM but instead called me the morning of the day at 7:30 am and wanted to see if he could drop by. I told him that I couldnt meet with him because I was almost to work. He started telling me how his company had overbooked him and the estimate was very involved and would take several hours and he might be late. I asked if he wanted to reschedule for Wednesday and he said he was booked that day and he was off on Friday. So I said well then that leaves Thursday. He ask if I could get home any earlier than 6:00 and again started telling me how it would take several hours. I told him that I could not get there any earlier because of my position with my company. He then said " I really didnt sound like I was that interested " I then said " I am very interested that was why I called the company, but it sounded like they had too much business and were really not interested in doing business with me" I then hung up.The salesman called me back but I waited until I was at work to check the voicemail. He left a voicemail that said we must have got disconnected or I was angry and hung up and then laughed. I called back but he didnt aswer and left a message that told him I wasnt interested in his company giving me an estimate. I think he must have wanted to leave town early on Thursday because he was off on Friday which is fine we could have scheduled for another week but instead he represented his company in a negative manner to me. Fireproof Contractors installed the Radiant barrier the next week. I guess I was interested afterall.

Decided to obtain a quote from EAS because of recommendations on Angie's list. Perhaps our experience was unusual, but thought it needed to be documented. Made appointment for Wednesday morning at 11 am with "Lonnie". At noon, "Sloan" called to say he was delayed. He arrived after 1 pm, more than two hours late for the appointment. He estimated our needs, and gave us a quote. We realized during the conversation that he was quoting several items that we didn't need, or that would not work with our existing roof configuration. When we said that we would like to think about his quote and the scope of the work, he put the "hard sell" on us. If we "signed up today" he could discount this by 20%, deduct $200 off that etc. It took a considerable amount of time for us to convince him that we weren't going to sign that day. In fact because of his sales approach, we aren't going to do business with EAS....we just don't deal with companies that use high pressure sales pitches.
Description of Work: Decided to use another company.

The marketing professional was well informed and friendly (and not overly pushy). The crew installing the radiant barrier and insulation was timely, courteous and hard working. I was surprised to learn that the solar roof vents would be installed by a third-party contractor and would strongly prefer being told in advance (as opposed to after the fact). I think the price is fair but it's hard to compare b/c I don't know of another company offering this 'combo' deal. I was also disappointed about not being informed about the option for covers for the solar panel during the original marketing demonstration. I've been told, but don't have proof, that the solar fans come w/ a 10-year parts and labor warranty perhaps this is b/c the solar fans are being installed by a 3rd-party. I would strongly prefer to have a copy of the warranty during the marketing phase.
Description of Work: EAS: 1) sprayed radient barrier under the roof, 2) added / sprayed insulation in the attic, and 3) hired a contractor to install solar roof vents.

Furnace out on Sunday. From the moment the serviceman came through the door he was only there to sell me a new furnace. Said I was wasting my money to fix furnace (12 year old Trane) and that the part alone would cost $680 and have to be ordered, but new $3500 furnace available next day. Said A/C coils leaking too and needed replaced--another $2700. I said I would get a second opinion. Next AM another company's service guy came out and found only thing wrong was the furnace door had vibrated loose which turned off the gas! Also said the part ARS said was $680 was a $25 part. Have since had A/C serviced and there was nothing wrong with it either. I refused to pay ARS $120 for the service call and will never do business with them again!!!
Description of Work: Gas would not ignite on furnace. Repairman came to fix that. Said he had to order part. See below.

The 3-man radiant barrier / insulation crew arrived 15 minutes early and got right to work, finishing 3 hours later. There was an initial mixup, since the baffles were not on their work order, and the crew chief had to call in to straighten this out with the baffles being sent out about an hour later. And at the start the "trainee" stepped through our garage ceiling sheet rock next to the access ladder making a 2 x 1 ft hole with ft long hairline cracks extending out. The crew chief got this sorted out, and a sub-contractor came the next day and did a good job of repairing this hole. The soffit sub-contractor came the afternoon of the first day to install these. I was surprised that the oval-ish holes he cut in the eaves were only about half the size of the rectangular soffit grills, but didn't say anything.
Description of Work: Our 2090 sq ft home has about 900 sq ft of raised central ceilings, thus about 640 sq ft of slanted ceilings, 5 to 9 ft wide, around most of its perimeter along with about 550 sq ft of lower (8 ft) ceiling over the 2 small bedrooms, their bath, closets and the laundry room. The home was built in 1982 with approx 8 in thick, paper backed, fiberglass batting insulation. The Efficient Attic rep, Mitch Sanders, analyzed our insulation and recommended upgrades at 3 different levels (70, 80 and 90% I'm not sure what these #'s refer to) of which I chose the cheapest. This consisted of painting the roof underside with silver color radiant barrier, blowing in 12 inches of added fiberglass insulation (making about R30 total) over the 1450 sq ft of flat ceilings, adding 10 more soffits along the eaves and 10 "baffles" (shallow metal trays about 12 in wide with open ends and 1 in high sides extending from the eave up the slanted roof, over and out of the batting between the roof and the ceiling sheet. These were needed because the original battings were tight against this slanted ceiling sheet rock and the roof, so very little air could enter via the original soffits to circulate out the ridge vents. They were spaced along the perimeter joists.

They did a great job and explained things to us very clearly. They were pretty competitive with their prices and they weren’t horribly over priced but they weren't the lowest bid either. We were very happy with the work that they did. We got a top of the line unit and their price was $13500 and change. They did the job beautifully and they are always trying to sell new stuff, but everybody does. Their price was competitive and I would use them in the future.
Description of Work: We used them to install our new A/C unit as well as the furnace. We had them do the work probably about a year and a half ago. They had to take out the old unit and install the new unit. They also installed new ducting and they added a return in one of our rooms so that there would be better air flow.

The price is a little high.

I was very pleased. When I called ARS I knew that they would not be cheap--but what do you do at 6:30 on a Saturday morning? The response was timely, the technician very helpful, very polite and very careful not to make the mess any worse (I appreciated him wearing shoe covers in the house). They basically turned a nightmare situation into something manageable.
Description of Work: My hot water heater ruptured in the attic of my 3 story house around 6:30 inthe morning. I called ARS--just because they had a 24 hour number--and they had someone to the house in just over an hour. The technician found that the water heater had split open. He called to get prices for replacement of the unit, including new piping since the 18 year old heater did not meet code. After I authorized the job, he cleaned up the water in the attic while waiting on the unit to arrive. He replaced the unit, drip pan and piping and checked to make sure every thing was working before he left.

I was planning to wait till summer to compare my electricity bills but I am not seeing any savings. The insulation is about 18 inches thick. When I go to the attic, the insulation seems to trap the heat in rather than keep it out. It is probably because the rest of the house is poorly insulated and the heat just gets into the house. I?ll put new windows and get other work done so that I will have a better feel of the house. Then perhaps I will see an improvement on the electricity bill. They did what they said they would. They quoted $2500 for the job. I told them I was prepared to spend only $2000. They came in on time and did the work in 3 hours. They made a mess when they were working. They did a good job with the cleaning up when they were done.

We had a storm over a year ago. I do not recommend them to anybody. They were supposedly a well known and honorable company, but I would not call them back again. I think that they are terribly overpriced. We had water all over our floor and didn't take time to shop for price. They put in a new water heater and it started leaking. They stopped up my dishwasher. There was one guy that was pretty responsive, but he went on vacation. He was going to Las Vegas taking some of our money that he had earned. They were here when they said that they would be. They recommended someone to do the sheetrock and he was not responsive and they didn't help me. I felt that they should have since they recommended them. All they told me to do was to write a letter. My husband had a stroke so I had to deal with everything and it was really scary. I told them that we would not to have worry about the pipes since they were new and he said that he hoped so. I thought that was a strange thing to say since they did the work. The person we dealt with was Dan.
Description of Work: We used ARS to do some plumbing work for us 1 1/2 years ago. We had pipes that ruptured and the sheetrock had to be replaced where they tore out the walls. He persuaded me that my kitchen faucet had to be replaced and it started leaking six months later. We had all our galvanized piping taken out and replaced. We are still getting rusty water in our bathtub.

They fixed some dripping faucets. They made a toilet do a better job of flushing. The garbage disposal unit was not working properly. They fixed it. I don’t remember exactly how much they charged but I they charged less than I though they would. That was encouraging and modest. I think I called them in the morning and they came in the afternoon. Initially, I was attracted by their labeled truck in the neighborhood. After that I noticed many of their trucks in town. So I figured that if they have so many trucks and a phone number that is so easy to remember, they must be very responsive.

Do not use ARS Rescue Rotor or Carrier AC units. ARS Rescue Rotor repair man is a slick sells person who talked me into replacing my old unit and charged me $10,000 for the job and didn't even replace the duct work. I have had nothing but problems over the past 3 years with my new Carrier Unit, and ARS Rescue Rotor charges alot of money every time to fix and AC unit they installed. This company has a racket going on.
Description of Work: In 2006 I needed my old AC unit worked on. ARS Rescue Rotor repair man arrived and talked me into replacing the entire unit. Told me the new Carrier unit would lower my electric bills, etc. They completely replaced my old unit outside and inside but did not replace my old duct work. I had to find this out later when they came back out to fix my new AC unit. That is when they wanted to replace my duct work for an additional $1800. Now it is 2009 and my AC unit has had to be repaired 3 times, and every time ARS Rescue Rotor charges me, and they are expensive.

First, a word of advice: Don't rely on an estimate you can get on their web site or via phone. The estimate I got that way was three times higher than the on-site estimate and actual cost turned out to be. When the estimator/salesman arrived, he was right on time, clean cut, and knowledgeable. Very willing to answer every question I had from the detailed nature of the work to the steps they take to keep your carpets and floors clean since hoses are needed from their truck up to the attic. There was no high pressure at all in his approach. All very professional. After he investigated the attic and did his measurements, he got on his calculator and did the estimate. He had come out in mid-July when they were advertising a special, which is why I called to begin with. But, he priced my job using the previous month's promotion, which was a good $200 lower than the current one. Got a call later that day to schedule the work for around mid-day on a certain August day. To my pleasant surprise, I got a call from their driver at 9 A.M. on the appointed day saying they'd finished early on another job nearby and would I mind if they did mine earlier than scheduled. Given the noon time heat in Houston of around 100, I was very happy to oblige. The two-man crew showed up shortly thereafter. They were in their early twenties, clean cut, and very polite -- "Yes Sir", "No Sir", etc. Most important, they were extremely careful to cover every area of my floors, carpets, stairsteps, etc., where their hoses would have to be run, and they were immaculate in their cleanup after the work. As to the work itself, flawless and as expected, with one interesting exception. The bid had estimated I'd only need about 5 bags of insulation. They ended up using over twice that amount to do the job right. But, they stuck to the bid and there wasn't even a hint at trying to up the price. I would gladly rate this firm A+ if that were an option!
