I've used ARS three times over the past two years for refrigerator and AC repair. All three times have been excellent. Each time they have shown up exactly in the time window I was given and have called ahead to let me know they're on their way. Technicians have been friendly and professional. the most recent call was to replace a compressor in a side-by-side refrigerator. The fridge is new enough and still in excellent shape, and it made better financial sense to spend $850 replacing the compressor (parts and labor), rather than the $2,500 a new, equivalent-model fridge would have cost. The compressor went out on a Thursday evening. A tech came out Friday morning to have a look and diagnose the problem. He was thorough and professional, answered all my questions, and discussed my options. Since they had the right model compressor in stock, another tech was able to come out and replace it that very afternoon (blow torches and all...) So my fridge was fixed within 24 hours of the original problem. The tech who replaced the compressor was efficient and skilled, and also thoroughly cleaned up the mess when he was done. I plan to continue using ARS for AC work and appliance repairs (although hopefully I won't need them again about the fridge for at least another decade!) They seem slightly more expensive than other estimates I've seen, but IMHO the quick and professional service is worth it.
Description of Work: Diagnosed and replaced the compressor in a refrigerator that had stopped cooling.

Had them come out to clean out backed up sewer line. Had to have them come out again a month later when it backed up again. After I had the water company inspect the line and had a handyman dig up the line, we could see that the line had been cracked open by the Cable TV company's main fiber optic cable. ARS was very friendly and did a very professional repair - they could see where a shoddy repair had been done before and showed me what was wrong with it and how they were making sure the line would not need to be repaired again. The repair took 2 days and they were careful to tape off the area after the first day so nobody would accidently fall in.
Description of Work: 2 sewer line clean outs and a major sewer line repair.

It was horrifying. Worst experience I have ever had with a company in my entire life.
Description of Work: One of my larger goals in life now is to make sure NO ONE DOES BUSINESS WITH ARS Rescue Rooter. They are absolutely, by far, the most unprofessional, unreliable, over-priced company I have ever done business with. Initially of course they were nice; they are nice in the beginning to gain your trust during the estimate so then you believe that they are seriously at your home to HELP you. I found out the hard way how horrific this company is. Their employees are rude, unprofessional, liars, argumentative, unstable and 100% disorganized. The worst part about this company is that the unprofessional and completely disrespectful way that the people are goes all the way up to the top - the General Manager was probably the rudest of all of the ARS employees and/or contractors that "worked" on my property (I use the word "work" lightly because a 5 yro could do better work than them). The General Manager, Jessie, came to my property because I had SO many problems with the work that they did when they replaced my entire sewer line in my backyard, and actually LAUGHED in my face. The idiots that filled my trench in the second time filled it in with some sort of cheap sand/dirt that was basically unstable because it couldn't be packed. They needed to fill in the trench with dirt that could be packed because they were filling in a trench that ranged from 2-5 feet deep. Needless to say, I walked outside and walk across the trench believing it was safe to walk on, no one mentioned it wouldn't be safe, and I fell right through the substance that they used to fill my trench. It wasn't the fact that it ruined my expensive trousers that infuriated me, it wasn't the fact that my new dress shoes were ruined, I was horrified and infuriated because I had a 70+ foot long trench in my backyard that wasn't even remotely safe to walk on!!!! The General Manager came out to look at the entire situation (or so I thought) and laughed at me because I was so angry and when I asked him how he would feel if this were his backyard and he had fallen in a dangerous trench he laughed at me and said, "I wouldn't have walked on it in the first place." I am still smelling a strong sewer smell, brought it to the attention of the plumbing manager Jose and after 5 attempts, he flat out stop taking my calls. They got paid and when they did they washed their hands of me and my house. ARS came into my life, turned it totally upside down, took me to my breaking point for 4 months and the result was that they didn't fix what I asked them to fix and had no intention of ever assisting me again.

American Home Shield (AHS) contracted ARS to repair or replace our hot water heater. The arrival time period was to be between 9:00 and 1:00. They called to say that the technician was on his way and two hours later he arrived. The technician stood looking at the water heater for about 10 minutes strunmming his fingers on the washing machine. Finally, he said that he would have to re-route the water line because it had too many turns and that would cost $125 and the charge to haul away the old heater would be $150. So, to replace the 25 year old water heater would require us to pay $275 in addition to the $60 service charge ($335). I asked why he would have to re-route the water line since it has been working and continues working even as we speak. We built our house in 1986 and the water line passed all inspections. He said that the codes had changed and he would have to run the line down from the tank connection and make a lower connection in the wall. He said that he would have cut the sheetrock to make the new connection. The old connection was not below nor above the the tank facet to the wall connect. There were two elbow joints which he said were not in code. The cost was $125 to make the correction. I said that we would haul away the old heater ourselves. He said no, we could not do that. They would have to do it. We called AHS and they verified what the technician had said was in fact true. The water line would have to be re-routed and we would also have to pay for the haul away in the amount of $275. We agreed. The work was finally scheduled, after ARS received approval from AHS. Two days later the work was scheduled. Again, we received a call informing us that the technician was enroute. It took more than two hours before he arrived. He completed the work, cleaned up the mess using and taking my roll of paper towels. Upon inspection I noticed the sheetrock had not been repaired and he did not install a new drain pan ( said his would not fit). He told us that they do not do sheetrock repair. I said that I had not asked them to cut the sheet rock, that they said it had to be done and had given us a price which should have included everything to complete the job. I did not have a hole in the sheetrock before their work and that I did not want one AFTER their work and that it had to be repaired. He said that AHS would cover the work and proceeded to call AHS. AHS inform us that they would NOT pay for the sheetrock to be repaired it was not covered. They agreeed that ARS should have told us before the job began. The technician stated that they (AHS) had in the past paid for such repairs; however, he said that ARS would Not make the repair nor pay for it. I believe that ARS should have told us that their quote did not cover the hole they cut in the sheetrock and at the very least AHS should have informed us. The following day I had a puddle of water on my lawn because the technician had not completely turn off the outside facet he used for clean up. These details are significant and are indicative of the professionalism of the ARS and AHS companies. I will not use either of them in the future nor reccommend them.
Description of Work: ARS was the company that American Home Shield (AHS) contracted to repair/replace our 40 gallon gas water heater due to a leak at the bottom of the tank (not in the wall).

When my husband and I had purchased our town home in 2004 we found out how horrific the contractor had been. When the house flooded internally I found out that the HV/AC was not installed properly. We had to have ARS pull down sheet rock, walls and everything. They did a brilliant job. This summer in Houston it was so incredibly hot that water pipes were bursting in the area. My landscaper made me aware of the issue and I immediately contacted ARS. They came out in less than twenty minutes. My entire water line to the main line had burst. They quoted me the price over the phone and I authorized them to fix the lines. They were able to fix it within nine hours. I had to have them come back out because the water irrigation lines for the plants were ripped. They recognized the mistake and came out and replaced everything for the irrigation system for free. Also six months after we purchased the house we had replace the first and second floor HV/AC systems because they died and were fourteen years old. I contacted ARS and they were able to replace systems in two days. It was not cheap but the did a brilliant job. I would never use anyone but them. I truly trust them.
Description of Work: I used ARS / Rescue Rooter Houston last week to fix my dishwasher. They do large appliance repair, heating and A/C, as well as plumbing. They fixed the external pipe burst. I have a annual maintenance contract with them. I have had them from over twelve years.

ARS replaced my hot water heater. The plumber explained to me that it would cost $925 because my heater was in the attic, however I later found out that the $925 was for items that I could of had a choice to replace. He did not disclose to me the itemized list of items he was going to replace that was costing me $925 above my warranty cost. The total job was $1,207. If I had know it would cost $250 to dispose of the heater I would have done it my self. There were other items that were replaced that may not have needed to be replaced.

I called about 10 am and they had a guy at my house about 11. I showed him the leak and we looked in the 2nd floor bathroom for possible sources of water and found none. He cut the ceiling next to the light fixture and could see water coming from the sewer vent (roof jack). He went into my attic and saw where 2 a/c units draining into that roof jack vent and concluded the vent was stopped up on the 1st floor and was filling with water. He did not have equipment on his truck to clear the stoppage and had to call someone else. He didn't charge me for the svc call and left. The other guy showed up about 1.5 hrs later and showed him the leak and what we concluded. He got on my 2 story roof with a long tube with a camera on the end and stuck it down the roof jack. He said there was calcium build up from the a/c drips clogging the pipe at a "T". He cleared the clog with a roto-rooter device he took up on the roof. He poured a gallon of water down the roof jack while I watched the leak inside. I could hear the water run thru the pipe and it didn't leak further.
Description of Work: Water dripping from a light fixture in 1st floor bathroom. After cutting the ceiling he could tell that water was coming from a/c units dripping into a sewer vent/roof jack that was stopped up. The guy didn't have the equipment needed and had to call someone else. He didn't charge me for the svc call. The next guy got up on my roof twice and cleared the stoppage with a snake device down the roof jack. He gave me a discount off the regular price of $375 (I guess cuz he thought I already paid for a svc call with the first guy).

I called at 1pm and they said they could still make it same day. Two guys showed up at about 5 pm and did the repair in about an hour. They had to come back the next day to clear rust and setiment from the cartridge in my shower at no charge. When the pipe was cut apparently allot of rust and setiment got in the line.
Description of Work: Water leak in my attic where bad galvenized pipe was attached to my water heater. The pipe was deteriorating from the inside and was leaking at the threads. They had to cut decking and remove the drip pan under my water heater to replace 5 ft of 3/4 pipe. $332 to replace the pipe, $178 adder to work in the attic, $97 adder for restricted access (cut the deck, R&R drip pan)

I feel the salesperson was not completely honest with the estimate. They go by house size when giving an estimate. I feel he used an erroneous factor to multiply the area of my house to calculate the roof deck area to inflate the price by a few hundred dollars. They did a good job with the radiant barrier but not as great on the insulation. They used a subcontrator to install the solar powered ventilation fan. He did not install it properly. The screws and caulk were supplied by the manufacturer, but he did not use them. He used the wrong fastners and didn't use caulk at all to seal around the fan. Also, he did not install the fan in the best place for optimum efficiency. I brought my concerns to their attention, and they forwarded me to another person. My concerns were never addressed. Recently, the fan has stopped working, so I called them to have it repaired under warranty. I was transferred to their service department. I was told they would ship the new fan to my home, and I should call them to come install it upon arrival.

We called them for an A/C inspection. We signed a service contract with them and they came out for regular maintenance. Nothing was wrong with our system at this time. After his inspection, he came to us and told us many of our vents were leaking. And he took the liberty of placecing a board on the top of the cold air return routed all the cold air into our attic. We started noticing that our home wasn’t getting cool and weeks later this is how we discovered what he had done.

Last time they came out, instead of fixing the problem, they tried hard to sell me a completely new furnace for $13,000 plus labor. It obviously didn't need to be replaced. They also wanted to charge me $2500 just took hook up a new tub, which I thought was on the high side. Another time they charged me $80 on top of the service charge to replace a little wire in my furnace. All of the service went well, but they were very pushy with their sales tactics and prices. They're not the most honest people in the business.

The ARS technician gave me a $1300 estimate to do the repairs. I tried to negotiate the price of the repair downward. The technician said that he might be able to come down on the price to $1000 but the technician said that he could not do the repair today. I was surprised that he was willing to do the repair today for $1300 but at $1000, he could not. I decided to get a 2nd opinion from another plumbing company. The estimate from the 2nd plumbing company was less than 1/2 the $1300 estimate from ARS but I had to wait 6 hours for a plumber to arrive from the 2nd plumbing company. The 2nd plumbing company did the work on the same day. ARS is an excellent company in regards to being punctual and quick to come out and do the estimate. However, you will pay a premium price for their fast service if you decide to hire them.

Called 8/30 to report a claim to my home warranty company. They in turn, contracted with ARS who they use for several service calls. Said ARS would call me shortly to schedule a service. Mid day that same day, I called ARS, was on hold for 10 minutes and when the customer service person came on, she confirmed they had recieved the info and the earliest they could come out was in two days. As water was backing up into the upstaris sinks due to the AC drain lines running into the plumbing, as is standard. I explained that this had happened in the past, and that typically a drain cleaner worked, but it kept coming back so I wanted it fixed. I told the rep that Thursday was not good but I would be here Friday and she scheduled a time. I explained that I was going to run some drain cleaner through it to try and clear it so we didn't have any water damage. When the service tech arrived on time today, I explained what was occuring. He looked at the sinks, turned on the water, and said, because the contract stated there had to be standing water, he couldn't do anything. I told him that the dedicated home warranty employee with ARS that I spoke with did not indicate there would be a problem and he said there was nothing he could do. He was nice about it and I feel like his hands were tied. I paid the deductable. I have since cancelled my home warranty and I will not use ARS for any service. Another issue I had with ARS was during the freeze this past summer when my sprinkler vavle froze and broke. ARS quoted me $1000 to replace it. A neighborhood plumber came out in an hour and did it for $270. From that point, I have been very suspiscious of thier practices. The people have been nice when talking to them, but they mistake kind with knowing how to service their customers.
Description of Work: Contacted home warranty provider who scheduled an appointment to clear a line that has been continuously backing up. ARS tech came out, and because I had cleared the line to the point where there was no standing water, did not perform the service but charged the deductable.

We liked them. He was very knowledgeable but he couldn't fix the problem because it was not a plumbing problem. It was an air conditioning issue and he figured that out which the other plumber didn't. It was under the home warranty thing and so I don't know how much he charged. He got us hooked up with the right people. He was great.

Call AHS for AC servicing. ARS was the provider. For the first visit the technician was a no show, did not call to cancel. So, we were playing telephone ping pong between AHS/ARS. This went on until finally the tech showed up on time but had no ladder to reach tthe A/C!!! had to reschedule. So finally after additional AHS/ARS calls someone showed up and finished the job.
Description of Work: Services were rendered through AHS. The technicians had to come three times to get the job done. Twice showed up without the right equipment to service the A/C.

I think I told the story from start to finish above.
Description of Work: Our A/C wasn't blowing air when we called and because we spent $10,000 with this company in 08 to put the air conditioner in we called them again. In previous years we have had good response/punctuality with ARS but this year was not good. We had an appointment with them in June to come out and do a tune-up and they never showed up, nor did they call us. This was a Saturday but no one in the office picked up the phone when we called. So we let it slide. But when we had no air in August (Houston is very hot) we called them again. When I contacted the office after they were 2 hours late and wanted to speak to a supervisor I felt like I was on that Russian commercial talking to "Peggy". I never did get to speak to a supervisor and who ever their supervisor is didn't have the courtesy to call me back. The ONLY reason I would use them again is because their technician was responsive, professional, and knew what he was doing. One of the people in the "office" actually tried to blame the technician for not calling! Technicians are HARD working individuals who work in hot attics and put in long hours. The people in the air conditioned office should be the ones calling home owners and letting them know if the technician who is working hard is going to be late. I've heard that Ideal Air in Katy is excellent and we may use them next time. Except for the fact that this technician was excellent I would not use them again but may give them one more chance. Who ever the owner of this company is needs to look at who in his office is responsible for contacting people when they are going to be so late and maybe getting someone to replace them. If we do use them again AND they give great service all around; I will report it accurately.

I liked that they were on time. The guys seemed to know what they were doing. It took them a long time to install it and I don't know whether that is good or not. It was a big job and they worked very hard. They had to go into the attic to do the work. It was inspected by the City of Houston afterward and the inspector told me that they did a good job. I did not do any comparison shopping and I asked for good quality equipment and I think that they gave them. They were very responsive.

Horrible. Overpaid for service and the techs were underqualified. Find another A/C service. I did and couldn't be happier.
Description of Work: I called ARS out 3 separate times for my A/C unit that was not cooling. The first tech told me to replace my entire A/C unit and quoted me $7K. I told him my house will probably be torn down to make room for townhomes when I move in a couple years so I really didn't want to do that. He told me to just clean my coils and hopefully that will fix it. Then my A/C got a little better after cleaning but then stopped cooling about 3 days later. I called ARS again. This time the tech recharged my freon and said to keep an eye on it. He said he could check for leaks but that would cost ~$500 (much more expensive than other service providers.) My A/C stayed cold for about 1.5 weeks and then started heating up again. I called ARS again. This time the tech said my A/C was down to 1/3 of the recommended level. He had me touch a tube on the evaporator to see something. When I touched it, it burned my hand -- that was great. Then he told me again that I should replace my entire A/C unit for $7000 + $1K labor. I told him to recharge it so I could shop around. Best decision I made. I got on Angie's list and found higher rated companies. One came out the next day. Within 2 hours he diagnosed the source of the leak and fixed it -- for less than $200. He said I didn't need a new A/C and it really didn't make sense if I was going to sell my house for lot value. Moral of the story: don't use ARS unless absolutely no one else is available. Their techs aren't as knowledgeable and their prices are much higher than everyone else's. Thank you Angie's list for helping me find a better company!!

Until this summer, we had been semi-regular customers of ARS, for years. They have done competent work, and we used them to repair all residential maintenance and repair issues our home warranty wouldn't cover, as we consider them reputable, better than those shade-tree techs contracted by our home warranty and cheaper than John Moore. They are also very quick to respond in the event we have something go out and need it up and running quickly. Their's was one of the 1st two service calls to an A/C issue and debacle that would drag on for another 3 months. In those 3 months, 8 other A/C techs, an electrician and licensed electrical engineer would troubleshoot and try to repair my 16-yr-old A/C. The conclusion would be that the compressor had grounded out, fan motor bearings were worn, welds were broken and had to be re-welded, owing to hard starts, created by over-amping at the old breaker box, and the compressor grill had over-heated to the point the grill melted, meshed together and didn't allow the outside compressor unit to dissapate heat, yet another reason to over-amp, heat and shut down. We decided to leave ARS out of the repair process after their solution was to add oil to the unit for $280, though no oil was leaking and replace the unit with one of their new ones as soon as possible. None of the other techs to follow would bring up, or agree, that changing oil would have had any positive effect on the spotty operation of the A/C unit, though all did recommend unit replacement. Part of changing the compressor, which was done shortly thereafter, included flushing out the lines and refilling them w/ freon, which, though I'm no A/C tech, I think included changing out the oil. The problems continued, only I saved $280, w/ respect to damage control. Upon meeting with and getting proposals from Angie's List technicians in this area, I've concluded ARS over-charges and is looking more at their profit margin, than delivering me trustworthy customer service. I will begin a central A/C-Heating maintenance contract with a cheaper Angie's List provider as soon as my contract w/ ARS expires.
Description of Work: ARS checked our A/C unit free, as part of the $169 home maintenance program I'd subscribed to with them. The unit kept tripping at the breaker and requiring us to re-set it, thus over-amping.

It was very good. I have their home service plan so I get service within a day and I get around a ten percent discount. There were two plumbers and they were very careful. They wore little booties over their shoes and they were very swift. I haven't compared pricing.
Description of Work: I used ARS to repair a bathtub.
