After researching appliance repair services on Angie's List, I called Mr. Hilliard back in February to set up an appointment to have my refrigerator serviced. Although it was cooling just fine, it was leaking water on the inside as it went through the periodic defrost cycles. He told me on the phone that the problem was most likely a plugged drain line and gave me an approximate cost for the repair (I believe it was $135) if that was in fact the problem. This price was within the range that I considered acceptable. However, due to the age of the refrigerator, which was 16 years old, he told me I may want to consider replacing at this time. I felt like he was very forthright and honest in talking to me and I did not feel pressured in the decision one way or another. He simply discussed the pros and cons of repairing/replacing a refrigerator of that age and told me that if I decided to repair he would be glad to come out. He spent considerable time on the phone with me given the fact that he knew he may not get any business on the possible repair. He told me if I had any other questions to just call again. Over the next couple of weeks, I eventually decided to go ahead and replace the refrigerator with another Kenmore. I had always had a top-mount refrigerator and was contemplating a side-by-side for the first time. Whereas I have had great reliability with the top-mount refrigerators over the years, I wanted a different look without spending too much money. I decided to call Mr. Hilliard again and ask his opinion of this type of refrigerator and whether they had any kind of track record for bad reliability or excessive repairs. He called me back within a couple of hours after getting my message and, again, was very willing to spend his time discussing my potential purchase with me even though it was not immediate business for him. After speaking with him and finding no reason not to go ahead with the refrigerator I was considering, I had it delivered 2 weeks ago and had the old one hauled away. (I did not want to consider repairing it and moving it to the garage as I just don't need that much refrigerator space.) I was very impressed both times I spoke with Mr. Hilliard that he was so willing to spend considerable time speaking with me when he knew that he was not going to get any immediate business from me. Just this fact alone tells me that he is running a reputable business and is trying to do what is right for the customer. He is definitely someone I would want to deal with in the future. He was very honest and provided both the facts and his opinions, as asked for, and simply allowed me to make the decision without feeling pressured or hassled. I found talking with him to be very helpful both times and will definitely be calling on him again if I should need an appliance repair in the future.
Description of Work: Mr. Hilliard spoke to me on the phone two separate times regarding the possible repair or replacement of my 16 year old Kenmore refrigerator.

Mr. Hilliard was punctual and very professional. He took pride in his work to ensure customer satisfaction and believe me, I was very satisfied. I would highly recommend him and also would not hesitate to contact him should I require additional appliance repairs. The entire job was completed in approx. 30 minutes and I could not be happier that I researched Angie's List, read all the reviews and decided to give Appliance Service of Houston, a call. The whole experience was excellent. Thank you.

It took him over an hour just to figure out how to get the panels off to get to the controls and that was with the help of my husband finally! Once her could see the controls I could tell right away he had NO CLUE what he was doing, he did know what it could be AT ALL! He said maybe a sensor but..... When he said but I said let's put it back together so I would at least have it for the weekend. He was wanting to leave soon for his next appt., he was late because this had taken soooo long. Mr. Hilliard was very, very nice but had no idea how this particular dryer worked.

Response from Appliance Service of Houston
We are amazed at the fact that the customer stated that we had "no clue". Immediately upon our arrival, we indicated that the issue was probably attributed to the motor overheating and shutting off prematurely or perhaps there was clogged exhaust venting (the customer mentioned that another company had recently checked the venting). Another possibility considered was the main electronic control board. Periodically, we encounter an appliance that is relatively new to us and/or the market. This will occur with any service company. Such was the case with this appliance. Despite the unfamiliarity of this particular dryer, most dryers have somewhat similar, basic design and functional concepts. We are not the kind of company that only spends five minutes attempting to resolve an appliance issue. We are diligent in attempting to resolve the problem(s). Unfortunately, we did not resolve the issue with the dryer. We realized that it would have taken much longer to resolve the issue than anticipated and time allotted due to other appointments. We had "squeezed this customer in" while in Cypress immediately following another appointment in order to accommodate the customer. As a courtesy and in doing the right thing, we did not charge the customer for our time and effort. We would have returned at a later date to complete the service. We could not be more pleased with the service we received from Mr. Hilliard from Appliance Service of Houston! I found him on Angie?s List and can tell you that all the positive comments about them is true. Mr. Hilliard arrived on time, was very professional and courteous. He found a bad electrical switch on the wall and that no power was running to the machine. Hoping that would solve the issue, he did tell me he would apply the amount of that visit to a future visit within one week for the same issue. After the switch was replaced the machine was still not working. I called on a Saturday and Mr. Hilliard scheduled me for the next week accommodating my schedule. He also provided me an estimate via email that night with the possible issues and what each scenario would cost for repair. He would bring all the parts but would only replace what was needed. He showed up promptly on time again for the repairs. Turns out we had really done a number when the switch went out. We needed one additional part to do the repair which would need to be ordered. He provided us with a full estimate of the total cost of repairs and left it up to us if we wanted to repair or consider replacing the machine. No pressure, very honest, and provided all the information needed to make a decision. We opted for repair. Again, he only charged me for the parts and the single charge for the repair job. Much unlike the machine manufacturer service center was going to charge to do the work. I have already been telling all my friends about Appliance Service of Houston and have added them into my contacts list! I will not use anyone else for my appliance repair needs. This is a company that believes in doing right by the customer and provides honest, ethical service!

Late in October, I had a problem where the freezer section of my refrigerator would ice over. Going through the Angie's list reviews, I saw that Appliance Service of Houston had some excellent feedback, so it seemed reasonable to give them a call and see what they could do for my ailing appliance. Scheduling an appointment was relatively straightforward, and the gentleman who came to do the work was certainly punctual and professional. In fact, I'd go so far as to say he was fairly likable-- but unfortunately, his work was not. After identifying the problem as a faulty defroster, it wasn't hard to convince me to go ahead and replace associated components like the timer and wiring. The argument that was made by the repair person was that when one goes, the others are likely to follow, so the most efficient thing to do is replace the whole system at once in order to prevent repeat visits. I agreed, since a little upfront money was worth avoiding the hassle of a failed refrigerator/freezer. That hassle wasn't to be avoided it seems. A few months later, the newly installed defroster has failed*, taking a fridge full of food with it. I contacted Appliance Service of Houston to try and get them to work on it again, but they informed me that their parts and labor are under warranty for 90 days. I, of course, contacted them on day 94. While I could understand guaranteeing the labor for 90 days, I'm seriously disappointed that they have so little faith in their parts that they only provide three months worth of warranty on them. For a major appliance, I'd expect parts to have at least a year-long warranty, and the level of customer service I've received from Appliance Service of Houston leads me to describe their operations as amateurish. I wouldn't recommend this company to anyone else unless you had the simplest of repairs on your appliances, and even then, only if you couldn't get anyone else, because you'll likely be seeing them (or another repair company) again soon. * The diagnosis was confirmed by Andy's Appliances, another highly rated appliance repair company on Angie's list.

Response from Appliance Service of Houston
Our company cannot (nor can any other company) guarantee parts that are designed and manufactured by the parts manufacturer to last for years! Parts are coming from other countries and just do not last like parts from past years. Nor do the appliances. Our company is not in the parts design and manufacturing business. The warranty on the parts was 90 days, which was clearly indicated on the customer's service invoice at the time of service just over 90 days ago. This warranty was a "parts manufacturers" warranty, not ours. Unfortunately, the parts failed shortly after the warranty period. The repair of any appliance, etc. is a risk (you never know whether the new parts will fail within a short period of time or last for an extended period of time). Warranties on not just appliances, but other things such as cars, trucks, computers, etc. are honored for the warranty period only. If companies began to extend the warranty period for one customer then they would need to do it for everyone. Otherwise, why have a warranty period? Shortly after we initially repaired the customer's refrigerator, the customer wanted to blame our company for their icemaker not working. We revisited the customer's home at absolutely no additional charge and found that the icemaker was in the "off" position! We informed the customer of this and he claimed that he had intentionally turned the icemaker off. We indicated that if the icemaker was in fact defective, that there would be a cost incurred by the customer. We indicated that the icemaker issue was totally unrelated to the work that we had initially performed on the refrigerator. We quoted the cost of the icemaker's potential replacement. When the customer learned that he would be responsible for the cost of the icemaker's replacement, he then stated that he would "get a second opinion". We never heard from this customer again until they indicated that the refrigerator was malfunctioning again yesterday. We then reviewed the service invoice and informed the customer that the warranty had expired. This customer is apparently disgruntled due to a similar issue with the refrigerator, the fact that the warranty period had expired and that our company would not extend the warranty. Occasionally, we encounter customers that expect our company to "bend the rules/policies" relative to parts and labor warranties. Additionally, these same customers feel that if you provide service on their appliances, that the appliances should work with virtually no issues, and if issues do arise, then "blame" the appliance service company! It is unfair to adjust one customer's warranty without doing the same thing for every single other customer that our company has provided appliance service and given a parts and labor warranty. Mr. Tolen fixed our dryer! It had a gas leak. He had hoped to get it fixed by doing a minor repair so that we wouldn't have to spend so much money, but it still leaked. So he came out and did the more expensive repair, and that did it. He was very professional and respectful. I highly recommend him and would definitely use him again.

Seemingly, appliances do not take into consideration the fact that the holidays are upon us. They fail when they decide it is time to fail! You were very understanding of the need to order the gas valve assembly, and our appointment schedule and constraints due to so many customers reaching out to our company during the holidays. Customers have to remember that we are providing service for others as well. Service increases, significantly, during the holidays, of which a number of such calls could have been done long before the holidays, but some customers procrastinate. We give each customer our total effort to resolve their appliance issues as quickly as possible. You are a great customer. Best Wishes, Appliance Service of Houston

Thanks for your great ratings. You are a "super" customer! Despite our efforts to resolve the "multiple issues" with your refrigerator, it is our understanding, as of this correspondence, that you have "thrown in the towel" on the appliance, and you plan on replacing it. Once appliances reach a certain age (e.g.: ten years or greater), it is a risk to repair it. It is like the analogy of an old vehicle that continues to cause havoc on a regular basis once it reaches several years of age. You will continue to spend money repairing it! It's just not worth it. Keep us in mind in the future. Best Wishes, Appliance Service of Houston

Tolen arrived on time, professional, courteous, and was able to diagnose our dryer problem within minutes of his arrival. With the help of my husband, Tolen had the dryer was back to working order in no time. Throughout the process Tolen explained what was likely the cause (a clogged vent pipe), outlined the limitations his company had with respect to going into attics and getting on roofs (which were required in our case since our dryer exhaust when straight up through the attic and out the roof), but he was patient and able to direct us to what needed to be done on the roof vent and attic vents in order to make sure that was what was causing the problem. With his guidance and troubleshooting and my husband on a ladder cleaning out the vent all was repaired. It was a simple fix, but we were very appreciative of Tolen advice and professionalism. We will be calling him again for any future appliance repairs.
Description of Work: Was able to diagnose our gas dryer problem and help us solve and remediate the problem in short order. More importantly Tolen was able to work on our Samsung appliance, which many other repair companies we contacted were unable to do. Refrigerator was working fine for a week to 10 days and then started malfunctioning again. Tolen made a second trip to analyze the problem spending 1/1/2 hours to discover compressor had gone bad. His recommendation was to replace refrigerator rather than repair and I agreed. Tolen did not charge me for the second trip. Tolen is knowledgeable and trustworthy and actually gave us 30% senior discount without us asking. The price was very reasonable considering he made two trips and spent a total of at least 3 hours. We made an appointment online for our service but bad weather caused a delay in schedule, so we received a call from Tolen letting us know that he was behind schedule. As a courtesy, he reduced the cost of our service call by 20%, but arrived on time for our rescheduled appointment. We have a 12 yo Kenmore gas dryer that had intermittently stopped drying, and were afraid we were going to need to replace the appliance. Tolen worked hard to assess our dryer and determined that we had a clogged vent, and simply cleaning it out would solve our problem. We even received a one week guarantee on the work of the service, should his diagnosis prove not to be the solution to our problem. The company seems very conscientious and careful about their work, and Tolen did not try to sell us any additional solutions or higher priced options. Which we appreciated, since the cost of the service ended up being much lower than replacing the dryer. We would recommend this company and Tolen to anyone that thinks they have an appliance that might be "over the hill".

It was raining and terrible weather in Houston today and he was going to be at my house at ten. At about five til ten he called to say he was tied in traffic and would be a few minutes late. Kudos to him for being so responsible. He arrived and took the stove apart. He determined that we needed a part that we did not have. He called the parts house from my house and we got two different answers from two different people. One said it was on back order and one said it was in stock. Basically, we are at the mercy of the parts people. Mr. Hilliard did all he could do and we have ordered the part. I can't get fussy at Mr Hilliard if the part is not here next week as it is just as much out of his hands as it is mine. That being said, he is fair in pricing, explains what he is doing, and is a person I will continually trust to do my appliance work. This is the second appliance for me he has worked on and I will use him should I need him again. People need to understand that some things are not in his control when ordering a part. He is fabu.

They said they would order a new door and it took a month or so and they were getting difficulty getting the new door. They even offered to pay me for the amount the door would cost. Finally the door came in and they came out and installed the new door. The bin could not be put in place with the new door. They said they would get a different bin and would come back out in 2 days. He did and came back and worked on the seal. He got the door to seal correctly. However, after the bin was put in, the door would not stay sealed. I contacted Mr. Hillard about this and his opinion was that it was between me and Whirlpool. He has washed his hands of the whole thing. When I talked to Whirlpool, they did not really have any explanation for this problem. Their suggestion was that I should call an authorized Whirlpool repair person. Whirlpool said that I was at fault for not calling an authorized Whirlpool repairperson.
Description of Work: He diagnosed the problem with my ice dispenser and came back about a week later to repair it. However, he didnot know how to get into the door to fix it. He tried to go in the wrong way and ended up damaging the liner of the freezer.

Our company unfortunately and inadvertently damaged (minimal damage incurred) the customer's freezer plastic liner in an attempt to replace a dispenser motor. We realized that we had approached the motor replacement incorrectly. As a result, there were small indentations around the edge of the area where the ice container seats on the inside of the freezer door. We agreed to replace the liner, but discovered that the liner was part of the entire freezer door. We placed an order for the new door, which cost us $628.58. The parts distributor stated that they indeed had the door in stock and that it would be shipped in approximately two weeks. Approximately, two weeks later the parts distributor notified our company that the door was on "backorder" from the manufacturer and that there was no specific delivery date. At that point, we offered the customer $628.58 for settling the issue (the entire cost of the purchase of the new door). The customer declined the payment and requested the door replacement. Once the door arrived we installed it and had an initial issue with the new door sealing properly. Upon completion of the new door, we discarded the customer's old door. We made a couple of trips to resolve the sealing issue. Prior to leaving the customer's home shortly after installing the ice container, the seal and ice container seemed to work properly. We later received notification from the customer that the ice container was not seating thoroughly and that the door would not close properly. The requested their old door. We informed them that the old door had been discarded. Furthermore, we informed the customer that we felt that we had met our obligation in terms of replacing the door (per their request), but that the issue with the door not closing properly should be addressed with the manufacturer. As a courtesy to the customer, we attempted to resolve the non-closing door issue with the parts distributor and the manufacturer. They stated that the new door was the correct door for the customer's refrigerator. We shared this information with the customer. We reminded the customer that we did not design or manufacture the new door. We simply installed it. We further stated to the customer that the warranty on the new door was with the manufacturer, not Appliance Service of Houston. We regret that we initially damaged the customer's plastic liner, but we feel confident that we did the right thing in attempting to rectify the overall situation, when other appliance service companies would have left the customer with a damaged door! Everyone makes mistakes. No one is perfect. We occasionally make mistakes. The key to making mistakes is whether you learn from them and attempt to correct them. We did. Mr. Hilliard arrived exactly at the time he said he would be there. He was professional, courteous and fair in is assessment of the problem. In addition, I had him look at replacing the fan and the broiler element in my Jenn Air stove. He was very honest in telling me that while he could work on the broiler, there was no point in doing that unless he could find the part for the fan. It turns out that the part for the fan in no longer made and could not be found. He saved my having the expense of repairing the broiler when the fan does not work. He was up front with all charges and we are very pleased with the work he did. The fridge works better than ever. We will certainly use him again.

Tolan arrived a few minutes early but had a very hard time getting the old fan out and actually broke the fan blade. He was very apologetic and called to check if they had one in stock. They didn't so he suggested we turn my own portable fan on to cool the compressor until he could return. He was appalled at the noise of my fan and felt really badly. He had asked me to monitor the coldness and since it was still cooling correctly in spite of the noise, he offered me the choice of waiting to instal the control board and would issue me a refund. I decided to do this since he wouldn't charge another diagnostic visit fee if I felt something WAS wrong later. He was so friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. He rescheduled to bring the fan when it was available but when I called a few hours later to change the time he told me he had found one from another dealer and was on his way back!! He arrived within the hour, fixed the problem in minutes and left. He is going to send me an email outlining my refund for the control board part and labor. I also reminded him about the 10% off discount for a new customer and he is going to take care of that too. I was delighted with everything about the appointment and will definitely call him again if needed.
Description of Work: Tolen Hilliard was really nice and helpful. He called to let me know he was running 20mins late and came to estimate my refrigerator noise and ordered two parts...a new fan motor and a new control panel. He was concerned the fridge cycled off very quickly and was concerned the board was damaged also. He let me know immediately that the parts were in stock and scheduled his return visit.

He was honest and advised me to not put more money into the machine due to its age, etc. I appreciated his honesty. He was professional and I will certainly use him again in the future.
