They were delays, not of the providers doing, which due to the nature of the appliance we made the decision to replace rather than repair the appliance. The provider was courteous, prompt and knowledgeable. We would use him again if repairs to a large appliance were needed.

I have an LG washer and the dispenser was filling up with water. He fixed that and cleaned it all up and it works real well. Not everybody does LG. He was prompt, he was professional. The price was reasonable and he was honest because there was some things there that he said could be that and it cost more but it wasn't reasonable to do those. We liked him real well.

Showed up on time. Quickly diagnosed the problem as the soap dispenser motor. Suggested if we did not want to spend the money to replace the motor we could continue to use the manual dispenser. Since the motor is quite expensive this is what we decided to do.

Thanks for your comments. Actually, both dispensers are motorized, but one (with a small "wax" motor) allows the consumer to manually open and close the lid to replenish detergent and rinse aid. However, a motor opens the dispenser at the correct time within the wash cycle. Your dishwasher is an upscale model that came with two separate dispensers. The additional dispenser had failed. We were honest in mentioning to the customer that they could continue to use the dishwasher with only one dispenser operating, which would save them money. Regards, Appliance Service of Houston

He was very honest in suggesting replacement. He also offered to deduct the service call cost if I decide to repair. While his diagnosis included replacing parts that I was pretty sure were not bad that may have just been an indication of trying to do the job right the first time. I give him bonus points for honesty.
Description of Work: He came to repair a GE refrigerator. After diagnosing the problem he suggested that it was a better idea to just replace rather than repair.

We visited the customer's home on 11/21/14. The customer stated that the fresh food compartment was colder than the actual setting. The refrigerator's fresh food compartment receives its cold air from the freezer. This air is regulated by a fresh food damper assembly that opens and closes periodically. Some damper systems are manually-controlled and others are motorized. This damper assembly can fail in two ways: either it remains completely closed and deprives the fresh food compartment of cold air, or it remains open at all times and allows the fresh food compartment to simulate a freezer compartment. Temperature sensors are typically located in each compartment (freezer and fresh food) that work in conjunction with the temperature settings. We usually recommend replacing the sensors, which can fail and cause the temperature to deviate from the normal temperature, at the same time that we are replacing other components relative to a temperature issue. We determined that the primary problem was the fresh food damper assembly (and possibly and additionally) the temperature sensors. The actual cost of the sensors were minimal. Our diagnosis/estimate fee was $85.00 + tax = $92.01. If work was performed within one week from the date of the diagnosis/estimate, then we would have applied the $92.01 toward the total bill. We estimated the total repair at $496.04. The "customer" elected not to proceed with the repair. The appliance was ten years old. Regards, Appliance Service of Houston

We made a call to Tolen at Appliance Service of Houston on Wed. 3/25/2015, we had set-up a date for Fri. 3/27/2015 at 4:00p.m., he arrived as scheduled, check out the Dryer and diagnosed the problem and said he'd be back, he provided us with price of parts he needed and it was reasonable. Tolen sent us an email on Monday, 3/30/2015, so we set-up a date for Wed. 4/1/2015 at 10:00 a.m., he arrived at 9:45a.m., installed the Timers, it works and he did the job in 30 minutes. Tolen, is a gentleman by trade, he was prompt, neat and pleasant. His impression is that he takes the time to get the job done and in a professional manner. Would we use him again, you bet! Water dispenser was fixed in one visit and took less than 40 minutes to complete the repair. In addition, replaced the water dispenser. Service was quick, good and he had all the parts available in the truck. One of my best repair visits in my life.

Water was accumulating in the lower part of my refrigerator. I called Appliance Service of Houston and talked to Tolen. He set up a service call. On the day of service he arrived 10 minutes early. Once he saw what was happening he was able to immediately determine what the problem was. The drain line from the freezer was clogged because of algae. The water that was created by the automatic defrost process had no place to go so it was draining into the refrigerator compartment. Tolen was able to unclog the drain and flushed it with a bleach solution to remove the algae and inhibit its return. He did say that he did not realize that my refrigerator was so old (18 years). Normally he would not accept a job on an appliance this old, but since he made the appointment he would see what he could do. Throughout the process Tolen explained what he was doing and why he was doing it. He was very professional. I would not hesitate to call Appliance Service of Houston in the future.

I called Appliance Service of Houston because of its ratings on Angie's List. My LG Tromm front loading washer has two problems that need attention. The first problem is the soap and fabric softener dispenser door will not pull out and open. The second problem is the machine makes a VERY loud roaring and growling noise on the spin cycle. Tolen came out and diagnosed both problems. He explained what the problem was and what it would take to fix them. He had the full costs of all the parts and labor. He explained exactly what to expect if the repairs were done. Since the main tub bearings need to be replaced they have to almost completely disassemble the machine to reach the part that needs replacing. They would have to take the machine away and do this at their shop. It cannot be done in the home. After Tolen explained everything fully I decided the costs of the repair was too high for an eleven year old machine. I decided not to have the repairs done, so I just paid Tolen for his trip fee and diagnostic services. Tolen is very professional and knowledgeable about his work. I was highly impressed with his professionalism and ability to explain the issues. I am extremely satisfied with Tolen's response and with Appliance Service of Houston. I absolutely would use them again in the future and I do recommend them to anyone needing large appliance repair. Outstanding service!

TOLEN ARRIVED EXACTLY AS SCHEDULED. HE QUICKLY DETERMINED THE PROBLEM AND TOOK THE TIME TO SHOW ME EXACTLY WHAT HAD HAPPENED TO MY MACHINE. BECAUSE THE REPAIRS WOULD BE VERY LABOR INTNESIVE. HE GAVE ME A ROUGH ESTIMATE ONSITE AND RECOMMENDED I BUY A NEW MACHINE (THEY DON'T SELL THIS MODEL, SO HE WASN'T TRY TO SELL ME ANYTHING) RATHER THAN PAY FOR AN EXPENSIVE REPAIR. Our diagnosis/estimate fees depend on the customer's location and the extent of what we do in order to assess the situation (e.g.: the degree of dismantling portions of the appliance, conducting tests, etc.). Removing portions of the washer dictated the cost of our diagnosis/estimate. We were pleased to quickly determine the issue with your washer and further advise you of purchasing a new appliance. Some companies will attempt to encourage repair, simply to make the $. We do not condone such advice if the cost of repair is going to come close to the cost of a new appliance. Tolen was very professional. He was very good about explaining exactly what he thought might be the issue and the steps he intended to take to address it. Initially had miscommunication but after talking directly with provider, All was resolved to my satisfaction. He also gave additional information and tips to help me keep the appliance in good working condition.
Description of Work: Refrigerator was not cooling. Mr. Hilliard came out on the 12th and looked at refrigerator and saw that it was a Samsung brand and that ice was accumulating behind the Evaporator cover. He indicated that this is a common problem with Samsungs. He has seen it with many of his customers. He recorded the model # and indicating that he would need to order new parts He indicated that the parts were minimal in cost and it was best to replace everything. I accepted his professional opinion. Once the parts arrived they were installed to my satisfaction

Tollen Hilliard was very professional and courteous when I made the appointment. He showed up on time and was very professional in my house. He spent time with me and explained what he was doing as he checked out my clothes washer and dryer. I was concerned about a noise it was making, but he said it is normal. The machines are 7 years old. He said that if the noise got louder we can consider service, but at this point everything is operating at normal. Tollen was fair and honest. He explained the situation clearly and told me what my options would be if we need to do a larger repair in the future. I will call Tollen Hilliard for all of my future appliance repairs.

*** Buyer Beware *** My wife and I are Senior Citizens and I called Appliance Service of Houston that I found on Angie's List to repair the our dishwasher's (DW) door because there was no tension and the door fell freely open. I spoke to Mr. Tolen Hilliard, Owner and we set an appointment. Mr. Hilliard arrived at my home on time and he was well spoken and cordial. He started to pull my dishwasher out from under the kitchen counter. He complained that our DW was difficult to remove because it was installed just behind our floor tile and not installed on top of our floor tile so it took him a little extra effort (approximately 3-4 minutes to raise the DW up about 1/4" to pull the DW out from under the counter. He ended up not completely repairing the DW and when I received his invoice about a week later, to my utter astonishment, Mr. Hilliard tried to collect an additional $95.00 because he stated that lifting the DW above the 1/4" floor tile was "difficult"! Unbelievable! Be wary of excuses. As with most contractors, proceed with caution and buyer beware! IF you decide to hire Appliance Services of Houston, get everything in writing "up front" before he begins his work and hold him to it. We agreed to $121.78 as payment in full. We paid $121.78 for a "repair" and we still cannot use our dishwasher.

Correction: It took approximately "45 minutes to one hour" of additional time to remove the dishwasher from its opening, not a few minutes as the customer stated. Companies typically charge an additional amount for such additional time. We are no different. This customer, apparently, expected to pay in the area of $50.00 for the dishwasher's repair! After replacing the new door links (ropes), the door would not remain secured/locked relative to the door latch assembly. We left the home with a genuine intent of revisiting the customer's home in the next few days to resolve the unanticipated "latch" issue. The links were slightly different than the original ones. We conducted research and found the ones that we had replaced were appropriate for the dishwasher. At that point, we shared with the customer that we felt that the door latch assembly may need to be adjusted slightly to accommodate the latch issue. We did not request any form of payment at the time of our visit. As a courtesy, we did not charge the customer for the new links and we waived a late payment fee of $35.00 from the total amount due. It took approximately one month to collect a payment from this customer! This customer receives an "F+" rating from us. Notice To Other Service Companies: Beware of This Customer! We had set a specific time for him to be here and he arrived on time. He does not like the 2 to 4 hour window most repair services give you as he feels his and your time is important. He is one of the kindest, most gentle, polite people I have ever met and I would use him again.
Description of Work: Reattached the filter compartment on my dryer. I had removed it to clean for out and the sensor came loose. LG could not tell me how to reconnect it so had to call repair. He said in all his years of repairs he had never run across this problem. Guess he had just not met the right person.

We typically remove the entire front panel assembly, which includes the lint and temperature sensor assembly, to gain access to other parts. However, we had never dealt, specifically, with a similar issue involving the lint assembly and the temperature sensor attachment becoming dislodged. My house was struck by lightning in August, which fried the control panel, thermostat, and display panel on my oven. Tolen was great, super professional and fixed it all. When the range acted up in December, he came out and replaced the thermostat and did not charge me for either the part, the service call, or the labor. We got to talking, and I found out that he has worked for many years in the industry, working for Maytag back in the day. I highly recommend Tolen, and will certainly be working with him in the future.

The technician was super friendly and provided all sorts of useful advice about buying our next fridge. He seemed to operate with a whole lot of integrity and it showed. He was early to the appointment (and we were able to schedule quickly... which was important since we have no functioning fridge). He even offered for us to call him (no charge) if we had any questions about fridges we were looking at buying for any advice. I plan on using this company again.
Description of Work: Inspected our fridge that was broken. He found burnt out electronics and compressor (may have been a lighting strike). He advised us to buy a new fridge as the parts alone would run upwards of $900.

I have already called them for additional service (the NEW dishwasher from Best Buy :-( isn't draining properly) ... and I will absolutely recommend Appliance Service of Houston again, and will recommend them to anyone looking for honest, reliable friendly service. Description of Work: Our 14-month old Bosch dishwasher was no longer draining or completing a cycle. Tolan was able to (sadly) tell us that the panel was no longer working and provided a quote to fix it. What I appreciated most was that he actually recommended we purchase a different dishwasher since the repair was going to be so expensive. I felt that was a sign of a great, honest repair person -- he could have made the money and advised us otherwise.

Appliance Service of Houston and Tolen Hilliard are the best! I won't even consider hiring anyone else to work on my large appliances. I've used their service several times over the past 2 years and am extremely satisfied. My 20 month old Samsung high efficiency top-loading washer began leaking around the drain hose area. I scheduled a service call via the Appliance Service of Houston website. Tolen Hilliard arrived promptly for the appointment and discovered a small hole in the internal drain hose which connects the drain pump to the external drain hose. Since the replacement part had to be ordered, Tolen repaired the existing hose with an application of silicone sealant. This enabled me to used my washer until the new part could be installed. Tolen arrived promptly this afternoon for the installation appointment and my washer is now operating perfectly. Tolen also replaced the factory installed spring-type hose clamps with high quality screw-tightened clamps. Better clamps make two fewer points of potential failure for my washer and exemplifies the commitment to excellent customer service I depend on from Appliance Service of Houston. Overall it went well, and I am satisfied. As is often the case, the repair required two visits: first an initial inspection/evaluation, then followed by installation of the ordered parts a few days later. Success of the repair may have depended on the fact that I discovered, myself, an overlooked aspect of the underlying problem after the initial inspection. The unit is now operating well, the temperature regulation is, I think, entirely satisfactory. Though the temperature is not as stable as it had been before, the technician informed me that the current performance is within normal operating specs. The service call was prompt, carefully executed, and reliably on time. I would not hesitate to use the company again.
Description of Work: Repaired GE refrigerator/freezer in which the cooling had become poorly regulated and which ran too warm in both compartments.

Thanks for the nice review. However, since this review it is our understanding that there is once again ice accumulation in the fresh food compartment. We replaced the temperature sensor and temperature control assembly. We did not charge for the additional temperature sensor in the fresh food compartment and the defrosting of ice. We have since referred the customer to the manufacturer or another service company that specifically services evaporators, compressors and/or refrigerant. Regards, Appliance Service of Houston

I made my appointment online. He emailed me to say that he was out of town and, if I had an emergency situation, I might want to call someone else. It not being an emergency, I went ahead and made the appointment. The time I chose worked for him, so there was no problem there. I liked being able to make the appointment on line and getting an emailed confirmation. Tolen phoned me the morning of my 11 a.m. appointment to say he would be a bit late (30 minutes) and was that OK. It was. He arrived right on time. He had already bought the part. After looking at my machine, he advised me against having the work done. He thought it was unnecessary and a waste of my money. It would have been a fairly expensive repair (almost $400). His advising me not to have the work done seemed to me to be an enormously kind and honest thing to do. I would not have known that the work was not needed had he not told me. He said he'd hang on to the gasket for a few days just in case I changed my mind, and that he could return it if I decided not to have him do the work. I'm really impressed with his honesty and professionalism and will certainly call him when I have other work to do. He refused to let me pay for the time he spent. A very, very nice man!
Description of Work: Tolen arrived with the part I thought I would need to have installed (a new rubber gasket for front loading washing machine). After examining my machine he told me that he thought the replacement was unnecessary. His advice was to not do the replacement since it would be a fairly expensive job and wouldn't really increase the life or the efficiency of my machine. So, in the end, he didn't do any work and there was no charge. (See below.)

He was early to our appointment . He was thorough and efficient in his work. The most important thing was to get him the model number and serial number of the unit so he could get parts to repair before hand . I would highly recommend this vendor for any appliance repair work

Tolen came out on Wednesday, Oct. 1 to check out the problem. After a process of elimination, he thought he had found the issue but needed to order the part. We scheduled his next visit which was on the following Saturday, Oct. 4th. He came out with the part, but sadly not even this would fix the problem. At this point he told me and my husband it would be cheaper to buy another washer than try and fix this one. He was very knowledgeable and professional. He showed up on time or even a little early one day, which was greatly appreciated. He came on two separate occasions, spent a great deal of time taking the washer apart and only charged us for a service charge. When we told him we would go shopping for another washer he gave us pointers on what to look for and told us to call him if we got to the store and had questions regarding our purchase. If we have any problems with our appliances you can bet Tolen will be the person we call.
Description of Work: My three year old washer had stopped spinning.
