I wish they could clean the coils. They will not clean the coils after an air conditioner is a certain age without replacing. They are pretty good at what they do.

They give great customer service and they are family owned. They have always given it to me straight up. They are courteous and on time. They are what you want in a provider.
Description of Work: I called them out because I had mold growing in my air conditioner. They installed a special UV light that kills the mold.

It was a pretty bad experience. They said the price was $500 plus parts. One part was $200 and they said they would give me 20 percent off. My bill came up to almost $7-800. I didn't think the parts were that expensive. I checked and one part was $140 and the part that he said was $200 was $60. I called them and said that I picked them because I liked the boss. I asked them their margins and they said they were 20-50 percent. Finally he refunded my money and took the part. I had to get another company and buy the same parts and I paid them about $250 including the labor when this company wanted $8-900. They should not lie. They do not know how to do business. Tony, the service guy, should have talked to the boss. They shouldn't have charge 500 percent as a mark-up. I had to call them 3 or 4 times before they got back to me.
Description of Work: I used Stark Heating & Air to replace the outside unit where they had to change the motor and capacitor.

This service was performed a long time ago so I do not remember how much we paid, but I do remember it being reasonable. I also remember the service repairman being knowledgeable, friendly, and taking the time to put on booties in and out of our home taking care to be as un-intrusive as possible - which was greatly appreciated! I would absolutely use them again :)
Description of Work: They came out quickly, diagnosed the problem, offered a quote, we accepted it and they repaired it immediately.

I came home from work (had been away for a couple of days) at 10:00pm on Monday, August 1st, only to find that my air conditioning system had stopped running and the conditions inside my home were stifling. Since it was late and we were in the midst of a brutal heat wave, I didn't hold out too much hope of getting anyone to respond to me anytime soon. I called four HVAC companies - three which I had found in the Angie's List magazine (the fourth was the company that installed the entire HVAC system back in 2006). Two responded (Stark and another Angie's List provider) within the hour (NOTE: I have never heard back from the other two, including the one that installed the system). One suggested that I try to hose down the outside of the unit to clean the coils (on the premise that the unit might have overheated), and then stated that he would try to work me in sometime on Tuesday, but could make no guarantees as they were very busy. When Stark technician Clint called me back, he stated that he was finishing up a job in Ft. Worth but would be right over upon completion of that job. Clint actually came out to my house at midnight! I couldn't believe that there were still companies that provided this kind of service! Anyway, Clint spent about an hour diagnosing the problem. Unfortunately, the problem was found in an electrical component that Stark did not carry in stock. Clint promised that he would purchase the component as soon as the stores opened later in the morning and come back and install it. As promised, he was back at 9:00am on Tuesday morning, and he had the system up and running by 10:00am. Thank God because it was 110F on Tuesday! I should note for anyone questioning the price that I did pay a premium diagnostic charge because of the time of night that Stark responded, but anyone without a/c during this heat wave can appreciate that paying the premium was well worth it. I was so impressed that I purchased a service contract with Stark. They will be my only HVAC choice from here on out.
Description of Work: A/C was not working. Stark came out, diagnosed an electrical problem, and made the necessary repairs to get the system back up and running in short order.

I requested Stark send a sales tech to discuss full replacement of a 3 ton a/c & heating system. I am also condering replacement of 2nd 4 ton system. Both are original systems installed with the house 13 years ago. The office person told me that a specific person would arrive at 7 pm and would call before arriving. A different person showed up and did not call ahead. He did show up on time. I know this is all very minor but it contributes to the first impression. The sales rep was in a company uniform which helped but he did not offer his business card. I don't know his experience level with sales but this was a very awkward experience for me. He checked out the systems in the attic and then performed a basic heat load analysis. But after that, he offered very little information. I am not a mechanical expert by any means, especially with A/C systems so I expected that he would ask some probing questions to help steer the conversation. I ended up asking most of the questions and then he just offered a page from a binder and said to pick one. Since this was actually my second estimate, I knew some facts and figures already based from the first estimate. This guy was $3000 more expensive. I know that trying to do comparisons of complex systems are not always easy, since there can be different factors or services involved. I was not about to make a decision on the spot and so I asked him to provide a written proposal for the replacement of the 3 ton system only and to write another for the replacement of both systems. I have not received anything yet. I would think that most companies would be eager for business which could reach over 5 figures in price, especially in today's economic slowdown. Stark could be the best A/C company but based on my first impressions, their lack of followup and the poor salesman experience, I will not be doing business with them. I will spend my $7-12K with a company that shows knowledge, enthusiasm and dedication to doing a good job.

We have used StarkAir for about 8 years now and although we have our favorite and not so favorite technicians they all seem to be very professional in thier work. We have contracts on both of our A/C units and they are very proactive about scheduling our semi-annual service.

It was a great experience. I had another company come out initially to inspect the system when it went down, and I was turned off by their pushy sales tactics. Stark sent a salesman out to my house the next day who ran me through my options and didn't try to push upgrades on me. They also did the right thing and put me in a R410A. The other company was trying to sell me an old R21 which the government has phased out. The installation was a few days later and all of the technicians were very nice, well mannered and spoke perfect English. They really took care of me because I have an old house so they redid my furnace vent to get it up to code which was not a part of the work at all and they did not charge me for it. I would highly recommend them.
Description of Work: Replaced the coil and condenser for my upstairs AC unit. Removed my old unit that had been struck by lightning. Replaced the outside unit and installed the new one with the proper vents, filters, etc. Undid a lot of the previous owners shortcuts.

I have used them before here at my house too. They were determined to get the job done correctly and to my satisfaction. Some of their employees were more knowledgeable than others. We had some of the big wigs out there because the job was taking a little longer than it should have. There were some issues that they ran into as they were doing the job that they didn’t expect.
Description of Work: Stark Heating & Air put in a new heating and air conditioning system in rent house last summer. It included the duct work and complete inside unit.

The only thing I didn't like was the contract for continued services and sales pitches. The service itself was good quality. They did take the time to talk through things with me, but I felt a little uncomfortable with the continued recommendations. They did ease up when I said I wasn't interested.

Good overall experience. I called Stark based on their radio advertising because I noticed that the flexible duct work in my home's attic appeared to be deteriorating. I found out that the ducting material had been recalled more than a decade ago. The Stark salesman did not sell me more services or products than I needed and infact, did not recommend a radiant barrier and more insulation for my attic , which surprised me. He said i had plenty of insulation and would not benfit from the radiant barrier in a house of this size with the HVAC surplus capacity that I have. The two man crew set to work and did a great job. They kept the mess in the house to a minimum and cleaned up all of the trash. I can tell that my system works more efficiently now.
Description of Work: Tear out and replaced HVAC ductwork and plenum. Sealed return air cavity. Removed refrigerant dryer on suction side of unit and installed new dryer on high pressure side. Cleaned condensor coils. Seasonal system maintenance.

They installed the whole unit for my house in the year 2009. I had all the old air conditioning units, heating units and the furnace replaced to the new high-efficiency equipments. They have been doing the follow-up work for me since then. I have been using them for the past twenty years. I would score them and have been giving them the best ratings on everything. They have been doing the semi-annual service and check during the spring and the fall. They have not been charging me for their service and checks.

Stark Air has impressed me in so many ways. My initial visit to their office was at closing time. Didn't matter...they welcomed me and spent as much time with me as needed. Out of nine companies interviewed, they were the only company to explain the mechanics of the system....not just write down numbers. When I requested formaldehyde-free ductwork, no problem. When the system needed some tweaking....ie noise level and balancing the system....they went above and beyond to make it right. Every person I've worked with, whether in the office, sales or the mechanical side, has been delightful, professional and a pleasure so know. I love doing business with them!

Description of Work: We used Stark and had a maintenance agreement and everytime they came out they tried to sell us something else. One time they even tried to sell the same thing they sold us the last time they were out! We finally changed to a different provider and have are very pleased.

Their sales rep was extremely knowledgable, explained everything in detail. The installation was promptly scheduled, everyone showed up precisely on time and did the whole job in one day, which included running new refrigerant lines and some new wiring, installing a new high-tech thermostat/humidistat combination. When they were through, the installer (Todd) walked me through all phases of operation to ensure that I knew of the system's capabilities and how to set it, etc. Stark has called back at least twice to be sure we are happy with their work. We will also use them for all maintenance in the future. As always, when they finished, they cleaned up the site thoroughly. (They even wear cloth booties over their shoes, when working indoors, to prevent dirtying the floors). The workmanship was impeccable.
Description of Work: Stark replaced our 17-year-old complete heating and air conditioning system with a new Lennox high-efficiency unit, including a three-ton 16 SEER A/C and high efficiency gas furnace. They had installed the previous system in 1993, and had serviced it for the entire time. The installations both looked like "aircraft quality" work, with all wiring, plumbing, etc. done very neatly and all lines, wires, cables in place and fastened down.

Overall, our experience with Stark Air has been very positive so far. We like that the company has been in business for some time and has a good reputation which they appear to work hard at maintaining. Their company representative, Bo Smith, who gave us the estimate for replacement had done installations in the past and was very knowledgeable, rather than just being "all talk" like some other company reps. He also stayed in touch throughout the installation. Any problems that occurred during installation were quickly taken care of, and everyone from installers to other company staff seemed to be "in the loop" regarding our installation. Because of the time of year, we have yet to use our air conditioner units (other than testing,) but I am sure we will be just as pleased with them as we are the heating unit.

Our house is 30 years old and most of the HVAC equipment was worn out. Stark technicians did a greate job of removing the old equipment, and putting in the new system. They do a ducting leakage test before and after installation. Looking at how nicely they sealed the ducting, it was not suprising that the leakage went from about 25% to about 12%. A lot of the "extra" work that Stark does has to do with making the unit as quite and efficient as possible. Considering the age of our old system, I never thought it was overly loud. In comparison, this new system is virtually silent. The fan comes on slowly, and ramp up to speed. The only time you notice it is on is when you walk under a vent and feel a warm breeze. It took a crew of 3 from 8AM to 6PM to complete the install. They were very good, and careful about damaging anything during installation. Stark also added a return air duct in our bedroom to help the airflow in there to quite the register noise. Overall, I am very satisfied, with Stark, and with the Lennox system. I was very tempted to go with the same system from a different company for about the same price. The other place was offering 6" of free insulation. I believe that Stark made up for the difference with a first rate meticulous installation.
Description of Work: Our house is 30 years old and we replaced all of the HVAC equipment. Stark installed a Lennox XC14 3ton AC unit and a Lennox 80% efficiency variable speed blower furnace. They do a ducting leakage test before and after installation. The leakage went from about 25% to about 12%. Stark also added a return air duct in our bedroom to help the airflow in there. We also had an Aprilair 5" filter put in the system that is changed once a year. The only items that remained of the old HVAC was the copper lines and most of our metal ducting. They added flex ducting between the new plenums and the old ducting.

The A/C unit went out on a warm (rapidly closing in on hot) Saturday. I called another contractor I had used in the past, but they were unable to send anyone out until Monday. I asked for a name of another contractor & they recommended Stark Air. When I called them I was told they could have someone out that afternoon. About 90 minutes later I got a call from their technician saying he will be out in about 15 minutes. Mike C. arrived and diagnosed the problem and got the air working again in short order. He immediately became my hero!! Mike suggested I consider their Star Care Club Membership. It gives you two free tune-ups per year and discounts on repairs and service calls. For the price it was a great deal & I signed up. They even applied the discounts to that day's charges. My daughter had an A/C problem a few weeks ago & called Stark at my suggestion.
Description of Work: Mike C. came out on a very warm Saturday morning, immediately diagnosed the problem and installed new capacitors and relays. He also hosed down cleaned the coils in the outside A/C unit.

Stark installed our A/C in 1993, and has maintained it for us ever since. Always punctual, professional, did what they promised, good prices. In this case, our A/C went down on very hot afternoon, and inside temp went to 80 degrees. I called them for help about 5:30 PM. They said they'd send next available service man as soon as he was done on current job. He ("Jeremy") showed up within the hour. Immediately checked the unit, had problem (faulty capacitor) diagnosed within 5 minutes; replaced it and had the unit running in 10 more minutes. I expected to pay for the service call, but he said they had been having trouble with these capacitors, and the manufacturer was covering their costs, so there was no charge. I cannot recommend Stark too highly; they have always done excellent work for us, and we are completely happy with them after 15 years of taking care of our A/C and heater.
