It wasn't expensive and they were very nice. The gentlemen were cordial and got right down to work. They were personable and did not dirty up the house. I would use them again.

Their service turned out very well. The house is much cooler and more efficient now that the vents have been redone. He was able to save me some money by showing repairs on some faucets instead of replacing them.

I requested a GM to call me a week ago. When he called me a week later he was rude and condescending and stated that he did not want to refund my money. After a lengthy conversation he agreed to refund my money but said it would take over 30 days to receive my refund. It only took 1 day to take my money so I am not sure why it would take 30 days to refund my money. At this point I am extremely disappointed with the level of service and the overall attitude of all their employees starting with the GM all the way down to the technicians that came to my home. Over one week we had 5 different technicians to come to our home to attempt to fix the problem that was created by the technician that came to our home in May 2013. I was disappointed by the supervisor that tried to sell me on purchasing additional duct work as he stated that was the issue with system. This was the day before Stark sent a final technician to our home and took over 4 hours to fix the issue and it did not require us to purchase the additional $3500 in duct work.
Description of Work: Since May 2013 Stark has been to my home 5 times. On their first visit in May they placed incorrect parts in my unit and it took them 3 days to figure out the problem. In August 2013 the incorrect repairs in May caused another problem that ended in a service call from Stark and a $612 bill for me. By their own technician's admission the repair from May were done incorrectly but they still charged me $612 in August. When I spoke to their GM, Shawn Stark, he initialed refused to accept responsibility for his technician's error. After much back and forth he stated it would take him at least 30 days to refund my money. This company and the people that work for them are very rude and unprofessional. I would never recommend them to my friends or worse enemy. By the way I am also a member of their $14.95 a month service plan and they have not done anything to maintain or repair my system.

Response was excellent. Technician was able to restore our level of comfort while waiting for part. The part was expedited and arrived much earlier than expected. The technician was able to restore full function in four hours. Only problem was that I was quoted a much higher price initially and if I hadn't checked my original installation and found out that I was in the warranty period on parts, it would have been significantly higher. I am one of their service agreement customers. In all fairness to Stark, I am in the ninth year of the ten year warranty and they have recently changed ownership, so record transfer might not have included older systems, but if I hadn't caught the error, they probably would not have done so.

They were excellent. I was only in town for a few days as we were in a short period before buying the house and moving in. They came out promptly at the appointed time, checked out our system inside and out, and gave us some recommendations that we could act on. During the time we were out there, the plumbing went out and they mentioned they had a newly formed plumbing service. We were able to call and get the plumbing division out quickly to solve our problem. They were fast, accurate, and professional both for the plumbing and the HVAC work. Both technicians gave me several options that I could work with and gave me an accurate assessment of what the facts on the ground were. Our system is older but is still functioning well, and now I have a much better idea of what we are working with for next year. The plumbing repair only cost me 200 dollars, and the A/C was only the trip charge hourly rate.
Description of Work: At our new house, we were a little concerned about the A/C, as it didn’t seem like it was pumping out as cold as it should have been.

I am a member of the Stark $14.95 /month customer program. I called out Stark for a routine Summertime "make ready." My Air Conditioning was working fine when they got there. By the time it was all over, they 'somehow' managed to loosen the cap on the freon pipe causing the freon to run out and the air to blow hot. They then proceeded to try and sell me a $7,500 system after they let the Freon out. I understand that my unit is old --but it was working when they got there. Seemed like their whole intent from the get-go was to sell me a new system at all costs. I'm cancelling my monthly membership and will never use them again. I had to spend $400+ with another company to replace ALL of the freon that Stark let out.

This is a difficult review to write. We've been satisfied customers of Stark for a number of years and have often referred friends to them. However, since Ben Stark's retirement and the sale of the company, we've noticed a change in focus with the company. It is as if they are more interested in upselling customers, especially if the customer has an older HVAC, than they are in anything else. On 30 May, a technician for Stark came out to do the Spring tune-up and check. When he arrived, he asked if we'd had any trouble. We told him that several weeks earlier, the outside condenser had frozen up briefly but that there had been no other instances of trouble and that this was the only time in years it had happened. He instantly went in to check the furnace and coil and then came back to tell us the coil was so dirty it needed to be replaced and that we should replace the furnace at the same time. We chose not to authorize the replacement without discussing it further and asked him to finish the Spring check. He said he would and went outside to the A/C unit and left after leaving us with paperwork that showed only that he had made the replacement recommendation and we'd refused it at the time. After discussing the issue, and based on years of satisfied service from Stark, we decided to have someone come back out to give us an estimate on the cost of the replacement. A salesman came out on 3 June. He went over our options and listened as we expressed some concerns since we'd examined the paperwork left with us by the original tech and realized he had not left the checklist Stark has been using for at least a year nor had he noted anything being done except telling us to replace the two pieces of equipment. I was also concerned because the outside unit did not show any indication that the condenser had been cleaned as it was supposed to have been done. The salesman set up to have a second tech come out to check the unit for us. The second tech came out on 4 June and did the check we've come to expect from Stark. He was hear approximately an hour and he did fill out the check list that the first tech did not. When we specifically asked him if there was anything we needed to be concerned about, he said no. Concerned by two very different reports, I called the office and the CSR manager who fielded the call said to believe the first tech because he was so much more experienced. She also said she would have a supervisor call but that it would be the following Monday before he could and he would probably be so busy after having been off that we shouldn't expect a call before Wednesday. Tuesday (6/11) came and went without a call so we called 6/12. We explained to him at that time that we had been forced to call another company for our peace of mind if nothing else. They came out, did a thorough exam of the unit and said not only that the coil wasn't as dirty as we'd been led to believe (3 - 4 on a scale of 1-10) but that id didn't need to be replaced. Because this company was responsive not only to our initial call and request for information but did not try to sell us something we didn't need, we chose to move our business to them. Even knowing this, the manager for Stark we spoke to yesterday said he'd still like to come out and see our unit. We arranged an appointment for 2 today. At 1:50 we received a call from yet another Stark employee to say Clint, the manager we'd been expecting, was tied up and couldn't make it at 2:00. We then arranged for him to come at 4:00. At approximately 3:20 we received another call form the same employee saying Clint couldn't make it at 4 and could he come tomorrow. We declined. This was the final straw. Waiting until 10 minutes before an appointment to cancel or reschedule when you already know the customer is unhappy and ready to move their business to another company is not the way to solve a problem.
Description of Work: They were to come out and do the Spring check and tune-up. The first technician came out, asked if we had any problems and then told us we needed to replace the coil and furnace. Even after we told him we weren't going to do so at this time and asked him to finish the tune-up, it appeared he failed to do so and there was no documentation that he had done anything but make the replacement recommendation which we refused. The second technician to come out -- after being requested by Stark's salesman who came to discuss the replacement with us -- did the Spring tune-up and did not recommend any action be taken, even after we specifically asked if there was anything wrong with the system. So, conflicting information from two techs out of the same shop all within a week. I listed the cost of the service as $129 because that is the approximate cost of the yearly service contract we had with them and that was in effect at the time they came to the house. The estimated cost for the replacement of the furnace and coil was $3975 - 4665.

We wanted to upgrade into a more efficient a/c unit. Wes presented very professional. This was the only company who provided a heat load calculation to make sure our a/c was sized appropriately (not too big or too small). I've called half a dozen places and they didn't know what a heat load calculation was. Our a/c was sized too big after he did a thorough evaluation of our home and our a/c needs. I was very impressed how knowledgeable he was. Estimate is priced good as it included 16 seer two-stage complete a/c unit among other additions like unit filter AND Reme purifier, seal all boots/grills (since ours wasn't done right), ductwork, and much more. Although their estimate is more than other companies we've seen, it would be worth it as it included a lot. Unfortunately, we couldn't move forward with the company based on what we can afford right now. I get the impression their work and service is high quality, reliable, and professional. I would use their service again in the future and recommend to family and friends.
Description of Work: Provided a free estimate for a new a/c unit, including a heat load calculation.

It didn't. See above.
Description of Work: I paid $99 for $200 worth of service. An estimator was sent to my house to give a price before techs come out to work. What I needed done should have been around $200 to $300. In fact, the work has now been done at a cost of $250. I was shocked when I got a $785 estimate for that same work and expressed my concern about how high the estimate was. I was informed that this company really only takes on jobs that are $500 or more. So, my $99 was just money down the drain....straight to the company for nothing. I guess it did pay the estimator something, but I would never have paid the $99 if I had known the "rest of the story" because it didn't fit my work needs at all. Truly, I feel I should be refunded the $99 I paid. I consider it a lesson learned about the "specials" offered through Angie's List. I felt I was ripped off and I can't afford that as most people can't.

I called ahead and let the Service Manager know that it was a very old system and the wires did not match to modern thermostats. He assured me that his technicians were experts and could handle the job. The tech originally installed them as a conventional system which did not work since it is a heat pump system. He did come back out 2 more times and brought a heat pump expert and eventually made sure it was fixed correctly. Although it took a while and we had 2 nights where we had to shut off the breaker because the system would not turn off, they were very persistent and finished the job. I was very pleased that they honored our Angie's List coupon and did not try to charge more. I have very mixed feelings about the B rating. The rating is really based on the fact that I called ahead and gave them information that should have been passed along to the tech before they got there so they didn't have to start from scratch. That and the techs left the panel off an outside unit that got rained on before I found it and replaced it. I really am not sure if I would use them again because you can't really have someone just "figuring it out" on an older heat pump system. They really need to know what they are doing. If this was a standard quick thermostat replacement, I think they could handle it very quickly and professionally so they would be fine for things like that.
Description of Work: This is a somewhat difficult review. We are very happy with the results, but only after 3 trips. But they didn't charge us extra so I have mixed feelings about the rating. We had these guys install two new thermostats. We just bought the house and the termostats were the original 20 year old thermostats. The system is a heat pump ( we know now) which makes it a little more complicated.

Description of Work: Heat went out night before Christmas Eve. I'm not used to service companies staying open late as normal hours and I could've called then. Instead we tougher it out overnite and called before their 8am start time, and got a real person. Kyle arrived and fixed my heater hardware problem under 3 hours later. He was very professional, understanding and accommodating of my new foster boxer's special needs for calm and quiet, and didn't try to upsell me--just answered my questions about their service options. Service plan sounded good so I'm in and we had a warm, Merry Christmas indeed!

After the estimator measured the house, he told us that prices in December are the lowest, and that Stark had come up with an unbelievable low price. After checking around for this Goodman 13 SEER unit (Goodman sells the least expensive units of all brands), I'm not convinced I was given such a great price. Stark is a responsible company, and I can see paying a small premium for their services, but they've been consistently on the higher side of pricing. As of this writing, I'm experiencing short cycling and occasional loud compressor stops. I called a couple of times and was promised call backs, but nobody called. After my third call, they sent a technician, who essentially said he couldn't check much because the unit was heating the house properly (this is true). While he didn't say the noises and short cycling were normal, he inferred that in describing how the compressor works. He did not check the system. He did recommend turning the unit into Emergency Heating when the outside temperature is below freezing to avoid the compressor short cycling. Being the skeptic that I am, I researched this on the Internet and found that all self-described experts said the only time to use Emergency Heating is when the outside unit is not working and you're waiting for service. This makes the Stark technician's advise quite questionable.
Description of Work: Remove 10-year old heat pump system and replace it with a new one (including the attic furnace). The new system is a Goodman 3.5 ton heat pump, 13 SEER. The also replaced some of the ducting.

When my unit froze up, I called them to come out and they told me that it would be like a 48-hour wait and that I would have to pay. I forgot how much I would have had to pay but it also included a service cost. I didn’t have them come out. I guess there is some history with me in Stark Air. They came out and did a check for the winter thing and they said everything looked fine and that I didn’t have any leaks or anything. When my AC froze up in April, I called them as I thought I would get some preference or priority treatment since I am with their plan as well as date of service, but that was not the case. So, I decided that I was not giving them anymore of my money because of their lack of service, and that’s when I called the Warranty Company and they caused problems and didn’t do anything for me, so I have to use somebody else.

On Tuesday 5/29/12 we called Stark and they showed up early evening. I felt they were very responsive. They discovered there was a bad evaporation coil and it was leaking refrigerant. They said they would have to check on the availability of the part and could not get to it until Thursday or Friday. They said they thought the part was in warranty. Tuesday night, Wednesday night, and as it turned out Thursday night without AC. A little history - we have used these people for MANY years and are a Silver Customer with them. We have purchased THREE NEW AC units from them, worth many thousands of dollars, so one would think we would be viewed as a valued customer. The "cost" to do this job was never discussed, & ( shame on me) I didn't ask as I felt like the labor to install the part & the refrigerant cost would be "reasonable" as jobs with them in the past have been. The TOTAL time on the job, both trips, was roughly 3 hours, give or take 15 minutes. The work was completed and the bill presented. My wife and I were both VERY SURPRISED by the price, to say the least, and I told Andrew (lead installer) the price of $1,036, was not acceptable & I wanted to talk to the owner. He was in a meeting and unavailable. Later that day I connected with Clint, the service manager, and the long and the short of the story is he said there "was more than just the labor to consider" in the bill. He said "he had to keep up with all the warranty issues & other things", and that he was "working for me even after the job was completed". I said I felt like all I should be paying for was the services rendered and not his other overhead. He asked what I felt the cost should be & I responded that I felt comfortable around $500 and my wife had originally said she thought it would be around $400. There was NO DISCOUNT offered even though we should have gotten the senior discount. There was a pause and really no comment back. I told Clint he had to do what he felt he had to do & that I would do likewise. I wiil say they have run off a LONG TIME customer as I will now find another HVAC company with which to do business. If you do business with them I suggest you get your price up front !!!!! I WOULD ABSOLUTELY NOT RECOMMED THIS COMPANY TO ANYONE IN THE FUTURE !!!!!!!!
Description of Work: This is what was written on their invoice verbatem - Install warranty evap coil * Charged unitThe Lead Installer was Andrew Hussey. I finally talked with Todd, (GM I think). He is someone over the years with whom we have dealt. He seems to be an very upstanding guy and customer oriented. We reviewed my account and what had happened and he agreed this was probably not handled in the proper manner. As I stated in my first review we have been a "long standing" customer of Stark and up until this last "encounter" I would not have thought about leaving them. Todd took care of the problem and sent me a check for what we agreed upon as a fair price. Had it not been for Todd's efforts I am sure I would be dealing with another AC company. Because of the professional way in which Todd handled this we will continue to be a custome of Stark Heating and Air. W. E. Binyon

We found out about them through Angie's List as well as Facebook preferences from some friends of ours who had used them before. We had our air conditioning unit serviced by another company who actually had messed it up. The guys came out, diagnosed it and worked on it one night and finished up all of it by the next afternoon. They worked with the warranty that we had previously purchased on our air conditioning system that actually got to us for just the cost of the Freon. There were two guys working on it and they were very technically competent. They were very professional. They dealt with the manufacturer of the original air conditioning unit to get us completely a new set of components replaced under warranty. I took out a service contract with them and I was so impressed with the work they did.

The service was wonderful..... Our A/C was out so we called for service. They came out the next day and we found the compressor was out. This was a 19 year old system. The following day (a Sunday) the representative came out to discuss options. After going over the entire system with my husband we went over all options. They offered a number of units and many prices. After all was said and done they gave me the best value with a warranty no one could match.
Description of Work: Replaced a 4 ton unit all duct work and added a return vent
