Description of Work: Had some 100 year old rugs cleaned and repaired. 6 rugs total, one large. The owner is very proud of his operation and took me in the back to see how it is done. The rugs were first beaten in a machine to shake out dust and grit. Then a wet wash cleaning process is used with the rug flat in a large pan and gone over with a device that looks like a floor buffer and using a special cleaning solution. Scary to watch but these very old rugs survived the cleaning well. They are then laid flat with a blower blowing under them for more than a day to dry them. The cleaning was reasonably priced. I had several rugs repaired that were damaged on the edges. The repairs were the most expensive part of the process. I was afraid the value of the rugs might be decreased by having the repairs done, and do not know if this is the case, but they do look nicer. One rug was a badly stained silk rug, newer and less valuable. On it the fringe tassels came unraveled and I feel that the fringe is now less attractive. Although they ran it through the cleaning process twice, the stains did not come out and the colors faded noticably. The wool rugs came out fine and look great. I don't know if dry cleaning is a better option but my guess is it would be much more expensive. This was the first time any of these rugs were cleaned and I don't expect to clean them again any time soon. For newer rugs without damage I'd say this is a good way to go. Reasonable price and an owner that cares about the quality of his work. If your rug is silk, ask if it can be cleaned and if the colors will fade.
