Professional from the start. Badges were worn and calls of confirmation made at arrival. The staff was courteous and professional. I was in need of a security system as I had been broken into about a week prior to the appt. They were sensitive to heightened security awareness and I didn't feel as though I was being pressured to buy the products they were offering. the installer was prompt and professional throughout.

This company uses extremely deceptive methods to lure customers. The initial caller claims to be from ADT (which currently monitors our system for about $58/month, so of course I'm interested in lowering that). The "verification manager" then has the "technician" contact you about the actual upgrade, a wireless keypad, smartphone capability, etc.) When pressed, the caller claims to be a "broker" who has access to all these rates and can find you the best price for monitoring. When further pressed, the caller claims the company is owned by GE, which makes ADT equipment. (Not sure if this is true.) The company's name? Monitronics. And lo and behold, the best monitoring rate is with Monitronics! $35.99/month/3 year contract. They will let you believe they are with ADT unless you demand quite specific information. But why would ADT call me and offer to upgrade my system and lower my cost? What's in it for them? Nothing, because it's not even ADT calling. When asked how reliable their service is, they further claim to be the #2 rated provider in the US. But Google "Monitronics" and you'll find nothing but angry, betrayed, dissatisfied customers. From the first phone call, they're lying to you. Don't buy it!!!!

They sent Capital Defense, which did the job, but bieng gone for th summer and I returned, several items were stolen from my home. Every time I left, my home was robbed and by Christmas, 2012, I called them and reported missing items from my home. A tech person had me enter several codes on the keypad and saw through her computer that 3 key fobbs were entered into my system, but I never had one and never authorized this to be done. She disabled all and said they'd no longer use them. I asked that my bill be taken care of by them. I shopped around for another alarm company, and January 2013, an Ackerman security system was installed. I called to cancel my account with Monitronics, and they claimed it had to be in writing. i told them based on the immense cost of my lost and changing every lock in my home, I owed them nothing. They continued to send my bills and I told them that I was reporting them to MD Atty General. Capital Defense' technicians broke into my home, bypassing the alarm system, and stole irreplacable property from me. Monitronics was non supportive, wouldn't pay my insurance deductible, and they don't have they're own techs install anthing, but subcontract out all labor. They are the worst for everything: price, work, customer service, response time, etc. They are a bunch of crooks, are based out of Utah, Mormons I've heard, charge contracts to be 3+ years, when by MD law they should be no longer than 2 years. Honestly the only reason I went with this company specifically was I won the system, including installation, activation, 2 door sensors, a motion sensor & 2 key fobs in a drawing. After being with this company for 9 years you'd think we would have gotten some kind of customer loyalty reward or a price drop or something but instead the rare communication we received (last March) was a notice of a rate increase! I also would have expected, at the very least, 1 or 2 equipment maintenance services &/or upgrades over the 9 years we've been using their service but we have the same standard (wired) equipment we signed up with in the beginning. What I see now on their website is so much better than what we have, including wireless systems. You would think they would have notified us of and provided their loyal, in good-standing customers the upgraded systems but I guess they don't value us as much as we would think. My honest opinion is, it's just not worth it. In fact I am investigating other providers who seem to be much more competitive in price, equipment & service.
Description of Work: The last contact we had with them was a notice last March informing us "in order to maintain the high level of performance..." our "...monthly monitoring rate will have a of a 'small' increase...". Otherwise there hasn't been any contact over the past 2-1/2 -3 years, that I can recall, except when we've needed to use the key fob for emergency medical needs.

A young man came to my home to discuss the home alarm system. I informed the young man that I was more interested in the Medical alert system. They offer to give me the equipment and installation for free in exchange for allowing them to advertise on our property. They put a sign on my lawn and told me I had to keep it clean and have it up all summer. I was informed that $99 would be the charged for activation fee and then $49.95 plus tax per month to maintain the service. They asked me to sign a document but I decided to decline. They told me they would install the system that same day which I agreed to originally. When the installer came back later that day however I changed my mind. I informed them she wanted to wait before installation because I wanted to think about it. They were very nice people and very professional.

I had another security company come into my house and promise upgraded equipment (interactive panel box, 2 glass breaks, upgraded motion sensors that my dogs would not alarm at a cost that was $6/month less expensive than Monitronics. When I went to cancel my Monitronics contract, I discovered that I was still under contract and the 15 months remaining was too long to buy out. So I cancelled the new service. However, while I was trying to cancel my Monitoronics contract, I had all kind of problems. I talked to about 6 different people on the phone over several days time. In each case, I had to wait for service a minimum of 30 minutes at a time and although supposedly the information was written down in their notes and in one case, recorded, I never got the same information back on previous discussions from any of the individuals. Originally, the rep asked me why I was dissatisfied with my service that I wanted to shift. He promised a reduction in my monthly fee to $36, new glass breaks, and he would have the technician discuss with me the interactive panel and check out my motion sensors. I called the company back to confirm the new arrangements and was told to get the $36, I would need a 24 month extension on my existing 5 year contract. I said I would only agree to an extension of two years from the current date, not added on to my original 5 years. The rep agreed and asked if she could record the agreement on the phone. I agreed and specifically had her agree to an end date of 5/14/2016. First of several mistakes on my part, I didn't insist upon a written contract to review. The technician arrived and did not install any changes to my system. We did discuss glass breaks...he said I needed 3, not 2. He checked my system operations out but did not check the motion detectors for the dogs. He said he would be back in touch but never called. I did get a call from the company about a week later. I called them back, spent 60 minutes on the phone, talked to two reps for a total of 5 minutes (the first rep eventually cut me off and I had to tell the same story all over again for the second person.) Here's what she told me. It was going to cost me an additional $300 plus for 3 glass breaks and a new panel. By this time I was angry and confused enough at this point that I didn't pay very close attention to the terms but I think additional fee was due with in a short period of time after installation. The extension was going to start at the end of the 5 years (not immediately as agreed to by the previous rep and recorded) and extend my contract an additional 2 years. If I wanted the 2 glass breaks and the reduced monthly fee, I would have no up front expense but would have the additional 24 month extension. I asked myself, why would I keep an existing contract for another 36 months with equipment that was not upgraded and that I was not happy with when another company offered me upgraded equipment at a reduced monthly fee. I was particularly upset with the differing offers I received from Monitronics reps over the phone and the nearly unbearable delays waiting to talk to a rep on the phone. The rep was not interested in discussing the contract changes, telling me the original contract could not be changed. Because I felt they were lying to me, I decided that I would cancel the 24 month extension that I had agreed to and wait the remaining year plus left on my original contract. Then I would go shopping for a more reputable firm and a company who valued their customers. They didn't do what they said they would do for me and only used vague and false promises to attempt to sign me up for an additional number of months. They kept shuffling me off to sales persons whose only job was to convince me to stay with their company and really weren't interested in keeping me as a satisfied customer. If you deal with the company, don't accept anything their reps say in the phone without written confirmation. Be prepared to listen to lengthy phone recordings before taliking to anyone...not even music, just "we're sorry for the delay; we're experiencing an unusually large number of calls." Nothing wrong with their equipment as far as I know, but they are not interested in keeping customers happy with the packages most needed by their customers.
Description of Work: Monitronics provided a security system and monitoring service under 5 year contract at $46 per month with a $100 installation charge. The original system was purchased and installed by Platinum, who shortly after sold their customers to Monitronics.

.I called the Monitronics to cancel her service and was on hold for over an hour and a half. I spoke to 4 different people and they all said they would have to transfer me to another dept. EACH one said the same thing when I told them I was cancelling the service. By the time the 4th person, Ryan, got n the phone, I asked him DO NOT TRANSFER as I have been on hold for 1 1/2 hours. I explained my situation and he said he would take care of. The service would be disconnected that day per Ryan. He also told me to write a letter with the info which I did and mailed to Monitronics the very same day. Imagine my surprise when I have a BILL from them for the next month. My mother does not use their service. I will also report them to BBB and Atty General's office
Description of Work: My mother was "sold" this security system, even though she had ADT and had no problems with ADT. She had some health issues and unfortunately got conned into switching security companies. She does not use this system and is going to move.

They have been rude, unprofessional, and outright obnoxious on the phone. I have asked them for the past 2weeks to send me information they their company actually took over my other Security system- and they have not sent anything. And in addition to just trying to get basic information, it seems that my alarm is not even registering with them when it goes off. I would never recommend this company!

When they finally did call, it was an electronic message on my answering machine trying to collect a debt. I have spoken to 7 people (over 8 hours on the phone) trying to get information on the company and an actual bill that states I owe them the money. When they finally sent the bill - I have a 0 balance!!! They did not even look at what they sent me !!!!!!!

The company failed to provide the most basic of monitoring services and would never call to follow up on the house alarm going off. When the contract expires they do not acknowledge your cancellation and you can not get a hold of any one in customer service who will assist you in having the alarm properly monitored or ending your account.

I had a break in at my house last week.They were nice enough to call me on my cell and leave me a voicemail letting me know there was an active alarm. I called back the number they left and was on hold the entire drive from my work to my house. Got to my house and the thieves were still inside. I ended up having to flush the thieves out of my house myself. So, why is this a positive review? Because they did their job. They called me, they called the cops when they didn't get the safe word, they called my mom. The cops had 20 minutes from the time they were called to the time I got home 20 minutes later to do their job and they didn't. My only complaint is in the phone system. It isn't clear which option to select when you have an alarm and need to speak to someone. I previously left a negative review on them because I didn't think they had called the cops. Someone from their corporate office called me and gave me exact details and who they spoke with both times they contacted the police that day. Now, if only I could leave an Angie's List review on the police department and dispatch.

I think the [art that I didn't like is that, when the battery was going back, it adjust, I didn't know it was a bad battery and they sent somebody to check it out and I got a bill for every time they came out and I wasn't really, they're trying to bill with me but basically, I don't think it was my fault that the battery was faulty. They were fine. I think the price is good.

We signed up with Monitronics upon moving into our new home in the summer of 2008. The equipment they installed was dated, and some of it seemed used. It was not standard throughout the house, and they wanted to charge a significant fee for every visit to fix their mistakes. They are a company that seems to provide about average service at a pretty good price. The equipment is substandard. The customer service is fine until you want to cancel service, then it is a real pain. I may recommend them if you are really looking for a low cost, low quality security system, but there are cheaper ones out there. It is the only security company that I have worked with, so I am not an expert. I was just disappointed and locked in for 5 years. I did my time, and I am now going through their hoops to try to cancel. Wish me luck!

I left town with my husband here at the house watching my cats. He inadvertently set off the alarm. He tried turning it off with the code which he had. They called the police then called him and he had the code but since he did not know the further information they still kept the call going with the police. This "false alarm" cost me $350.00. I told them them that burglars did not answer the phone because they did not know who was calling and certainly would not bother talking to them. The guy that answers the phone was so stupid that he could not figure this out. Also I called them and left messages and did not hear back from them. I have never liked monitored services of any kind due to the type of people that are used to answer the phones. I have had ADT before and they would call me to tell me the alarm was going off at my business in the middle of the night. What was I supposed to do?

Monitronics utilizes local contractors to install the equipment. There were several miscommunications in what was supposed to be installed, but the local System's Alert Security out of Douglasville did the install and cleared up the issues. I am satisfied with the end result.

It went fine. They were on par and it looks good. So far dealing with the company were very good. They didn't tell me over the phone that I had to actually have a permit for the alarm. There was something and the alarms went off but when the cops came out it ended up costing me like$260 but I don't know if that would have been cheaper with the permit as it turns out they came out and looked out and there was a problem with the front door and they fixed it and it was free. So I don't want to complain about them but the one thing they should have told me that I needed a permit.
Description of Work: We moved into the house and Monitronics Security LP already had their systems set up around the various places.

I tried to cancel in November with them as the contract was already over and they gave me such a hard time and after many phone calls and letters they cancelled in January. They still contacting every day, several times a day to try to get me back as a customer even though I already said no. They are still trying to charge me for their services.
Description of Work: They charged me to come out and inspect the alarm system even though it wasn't working properly. They lied to have me sign a 3 year contract. I had a friend house sit, and the alarm went off, when they called the house she didn't have the password and she just stated that she was house sitting and they failed to contact me or the police. Very well done and professional people.
Description of Work: Evaluated my home to see where I would need to put security in my home. Worked with me with pets in the house and having alarms on. Installed the system free of charge. Remodeled home they came back out and adjusted the system for better protection.

The first two years we had the service we had no issues. The past year our cellular connection quit working and they replaced our cellular module with no problems. Also, over the past years, when we call or go online to change our contact list, they have failed to properly update it. The last false alarm we had they contacted everyone but us (even my friend in Chicago who has no access to our system). This last service call, the tech showed up three hours late with no phone call and then took three and a half hours to "fix" the problem. When he left, our cell phone access no longer worked and our key fobs no longer worked. When I talked to the company they did offer me two free months of service but told me any further compensation would have to come from their subcontractor. I feel if it's all under the Monitronics name, then all compensation should have to come from Monitronics. They should have to deal with their own subcontractors, not me. We are now switching to another company.
Description of Work: Was supposed to fix a no A/C message on our panel. After "fixing" the issue, our iPhone access no longer works and my keychain remote doesn't work.
