Initially, first contact went well. Didn't use him for job I contacted him about but told him I wanted to use him in future. Called him 2weeks later and phone call was not returned for 1 week. When he finally returned call said he had been out of town, which was ok with me. He told me he would call me, on arranged day and meet later in the day. He never called. Called him several days after he was supposed to call/meet with me, left message, reminded him he was to call/meet with me the week previous. When he did call me back I told him I didn't understand why he didn't follow up and said if you don't want the work just say so and I will find someone who does. He said "I don't want to work with you" and hung up on me!!!!

Response from John's Handyman Service
I had asked her, not the member, to call me back after vacation as i did not have my work book with me while i was on vacation. when she called back she was upset that I didn't call her back when she never left me a # on my voice mail as instructed. She became quite curt with me, at that point I suggested she find another contractor.

John showed up on time for the estimate. He walked through what we needed to do and scheduled a time for the work. When he arrived on the scheduled date to do the work, the heater hadn’t drained properly (I misunderstood his instructions) meaning he couldn’t proceed with the work that day. John was very flexible about scheduling a time the next day to finish the work. He came the next day and completed the work quickly and correctly, and cleaned up the area afterwards. He even moved my washer and drier (which I had moved out when my problems initially arose) back into the utility closet after he was done. The final cost was consistent with his estimate and he left me a neat stack of receipts for the parts he purchased. Before contacting John, I received an estimate from a plumber affiliated with one of the big box hardware chains. That plumber had insisted that a significant amount of other work was necessary to complete the job. As a result, the final total for John’s work and expenses was much less than the other quote I received. John was a consummate professional throughout the process and a real pleasure to deal with. It was a great experience and I wouldn’t hesitate to use John again. I highly recommend him.
Description of Work: Installed a new water heater (that I purchased separately), along with a drip pan and other minor modifications.

It was a good experience all around.
Description of Work: John was very helpful over the phone. Gave a prompt estimate and did the job on time. The quality was very good except for one hole in the wall that I believe could not be fixed. Help kept the garage wall standing which was good enough for me. I will most certainly use him again.

The tape and bed/paint in the garage exceeded my expectations. I couldn't have asked for better work. I was also very happy with the work they did to repair several small cracks above doors and windows in the house. They really did a good job and it's hard to even tell where they had to re-texture. The door threshold works great and the ramp to the storage shed is good too. The only small glitch in the whole experience was in the tile replacement in the master bathroom. The floor tiles were installed with no problem, but when it came to replacing four tiles in the middle of the wall in the master shower - things didn't go as well. I had 11 replacement tiles, and as they started taking out the cracked ones to replace - the ones on each side would break. To be fair - not all their fault, because the tiles were thinner than most and were expertly set in the original installation. John Kollenborn was very willing to work through this with us, as we ended up with many more broken tiles than we had for replacement. We ended up having to put in a mosaic pattern in the middle of the wall, as there was no more of my original tile to be found anywhere. So in the end - it doesn't look like I wanted it to, but it is fine - it works and the replacement mosaic was well done. Also - if I need to have their handyman services again - I would also be sure that John reminds them to use plastic to cover furniture and the work area. It took me quite a while to clean up after them each day. I think this is a function of them working quickly - but I would have preferred they take a bit more time and use the plastic to cover the area in which they are working. I will say that John Kollenborn is very good to work with.
Description of Work: They did a lot of different jobs that I needed to get done. Tape and Bed Repair and paint in garage. Fix several wall cracks and re-textured. Closed up a threshold at the front door, installed a ramp to our outdoor storage shed, replaced some broken tile in master shower and replaced two tiles in master bath floor.

John did an excellent job as always on all three of the jobs we hired him for. The majority of the work was done while we were at work during the day. John is very flexible with scheduling, and communicated very promptly and in a timely fashion. Everything was done very professionally. We've had John do the types of things that you just don't know who to call for, like the broken water supply to our pool waterfall. It's a relief that you can find someone who you can trust to do a variety of things. Great job from beginning to end.
Description of Work: Installed new toilet Fixed a particularly difficult issue where we had chopped through the pipe which provided water to the swimming pool waterfall. There is a stone planter elevated above the pool that water shoots out of, and we cut through the water supply right where it attached to the stone masonry, making a simple repair impossible. John had to get a new pan to create the waterfall effect, and take that part of the stone planter apart, stone by stone, replace the pipe and pan, and them put it all back together, matching the grout. Power wash and re-stain the cedar fence.

Showed up to review tasks and provide estimates when he said he would. Prompt with the estimate. Showed up to do the work when they said they would. Completed the work in 2 days as they said they would. Cleaned up after themselves and did not leave a mess for us to deal with. The process was smooth and painless, everything done as expected. Would use again.
Description of Work: One new and one modified thresholds for two doors. Weatherstripping for door. Rework three closets adding additional rods, double-decking existing single rod closets. Install mirror in bathroom. Add detents to media room doors as well as lip. Paint caulking which had been added to baseboards / shoe molding.

John came out to our house and reviewed all of the tasks in detail so he could give us a quote. We liked him a lot and he had good recommendations on how to fix everything or improve our ideas. He gave us the quote on the spot and we said yes on the spot. We agreed he would start in a week and a half, which at the time was Feb 8th. On that day, he and his 2 helpers arrived on time and got to work. I was at the office, but my wife was home and supervised them out of the corner of her eye while she went about her day. They appeared to make decent progress. John left around lunchtime (to go to another job, I guess) but the two other handymen stayed until about 5:30 or so. They were just leaving when I arrived home from work, and noted that the TV in the living room said "no signal". The one guy acted mystified by it and said he hadn't touched any of the cabling while putting the TV on the wall, which sounded unlikely to me but I didn't argue because we had somewhere to go that night. When we arrived back home and tried to troubleshoot the TV issue, it turned out that all the cabling was totally messed up. We took it all apart and put it back together correctly--and the TV still didn't work. Still "no signal". After two hours of trial and error, we finally figured out that the HDMI port on the back of the TV was buckled and bent, and had been further damaged when the handyman had jammed the HDMI cable back into the port even though it was already bent. It appeared that the original damage had happened when the TV was moved without the cable unplugged, and banged against a wall or something, which bent the interior of the port. This is on a 55" TV that we had bought 5 days earlier specifically for this project! I called John's cell once we discovered this, and calmly let him know about the problem we had found. He was very apologetic and professional about the problem--didn't try to make excuses or weasel out of anything. I wanted to make sure he was intending to come back to our project the next morning so I could show him personally what had happened before I went to work again. He readily agreed to meet first thing the next morning, so we did. When he arrived the next morning, he appeared very upset and almost despondent. He took one look at the port on the back of the TV and agreed it was ruined. He informed us that since our phone call, he had fired his two handymen from the day before, fired his other workers, and even fired his office staff! He said he couldn't take it anymore and was going to take some time off for himself and wasn't sure if he would ever be a handyman again. He had gotten a quote from a TV repair shop for what a new motherboard would cost in the TV, and showed us on his list of accomplishments from the previous day that according to the value of that work, we should be close to even, financially, if he didn't charge for any of that. He apologized multiple times and took responsibility for the errors, even admitting that he had had to replace entirely 2 other flat panel TVs that were damaged by his guys the previous week. After 2-3 more minutes of chatting, and honestly, us trying to make him not feel so bad, he left our house and drove away. We were somewhat in shock that he had just left us in the middle of a $1500 project over a $400 motherboard, but mostly we felt bad for him and hoped he was going to be ok. He was a very nice guy and really seemed to be at the end of his rope... Imagine my surprise when I come on Angie's List tonight, and see a positive review for him for work completed yesterday! I guess I can stop feeling bad for him and his office staff, huh? I'm confused. Is he a good guy who is a bit down on his luck now with his hired help? Or is he just another douchebag contractor walking off a half-done job amist a cloud of lies? Honestly, I don't know. But if you reading this, and thinking of hiring this guy, don't. There are plenty of contractors out there who won't abandon your project when something goes wrong.
Description of Work: We had a list of honey-dos to fix up in our house that we wanted a handyman to handle for us. Repairing trim work, fixing a faucet, some minor painting, repairing a door knob that was loose, etc. The biggest aspect of the job was mounting two separate large flat-panel TVs to the walls in our living room and bedroom.

Response from John's Handyman Service
The post above is unfortunate and yes the worst thing that I did was walk away from the job. I was embarrassed by the whole situation and probably could have handled it differently if it were not for the fact that I had just replaced two big screen TV’s the week before. I had finished $800.00 dollars worth of work for the clients and decided that the best thing for me to do was to leave the job incomplete and not charge the customer the $800.00 so that he could get his TV repaired for the estimated $400.00 which would give him an additional compensation of $400.00. I understand that it was not very professional to leave this job incomplete and truthfully this is the first time I have done such a thing. Needless to say we will no longer be hanging TV’s and I have made the necessary staff changes. I did try to fire my office staff but my niece and sister just laughed at me. Again I do sincerely apologize to the client it was unprofessional and unfortunate and it won’t happen again.

I was impressed with the high quality of professionalism, workmanship and materials John and his crew used for this job. My cabinets are better now than when they were new. They were made of pressed fiber board with wood fronts of course. He replaced the inside cabinet walls and floors with furniture grade marine plywood then they primed and painted them and all the while they kept my granite counter top supported with my heavy iron Kohler undermounted sink and disposal intact. His labor fees were reasonable and I would definitely like to have him back for some other repair projects that need doing.
Description of Work: Gutted water damaged kitchen cabinets, took time to dry out the area thoroughly, then four kitchen floor cabinets were rebuilt due to water damage plus primed and painted the cabinets and kickboards. Added wallboard and insulation on back wall also labor to replace damaged floor boards with backup floor planks we had on hand and installed new dishwasher.

John gave me a quote within 24 hours of my call. Condo was vacant so although it was the holidays, he fit my remodeling in on weekends and rain days which allowed the work to begin early. John has good design ideas. This was my first remodeling project and several unexpected problems came up which cost more money. John had suggestions that saved me money like using granite tile instead of slab granite for a new shelf in kitchen. They pressure washed, replaced several boards, and stained my deck making a terribly warn deck look new. They also installed a new sliding patio door. I have asked John to return for several other projects.
Description of Work: Completely remodeled my kitchen and 2/3s of my bath. Installed a new sliding patio door, granite countertops, kitchen sink, microwave vent, garbage disposal, dishwasher, kitchen cabinets, stained and clear coated cabinets, helped design kitchen which added more storage space and is more aesthetically pleasing and efficient, new ceramic tile floor in bath, installed dual flush toilet, new vanity which needed to be modified for the space, new faucets, removed extra sink from bedroom and created linen shelves.

My home is getting ready to be put on the market and John was a great resource to help me determine what needed to be done. I was in a rush to get it done and John was able to work me in with only a few days notice. He understood the importance of curb appeal and making things present as well as possible. His staff was very professional, and they did a great job of keeping their mess to a minimum. They "tented" off the areas where they were doing drywall repair in order to keep the dust to a minimum. They even cleaned up their mess before they left. I can't even tell where the areas are that they did the drywall repairs. My walls are texturized so it definitely wasn't an easy task. All of the areas had been done previously so they had to undo what the previous contractor did and fix it. The pressure washing also looks great! I would recommend John to anyone needing odds and ends done around their house. It was perfect to have them come and knock it all out in one day.
Description of Work: I had John and his team repair some drywall inside the house and do pressure washing on the exterior of the house. I also had him take a look at a stairway that needed refinished, but he was honest with me and let me know I should use someone who was more specialized in order to achieve the very best results.

John's guys did a great job of scrubbing 6 years of dirt off my doors and shutters, then oiling the wood to protect it. They took care of the other work very efficiently. While there, John spotted a metal umbrella stand that I was sure I was going to have to trash. The stand is really a work of art that had been seriously damaged by my dog who felt it was his property - i.e., peed on it regularly. The enamel paint on the bottom 4 inches of the stand were terribly rusted, among other issues. John suggested that one of his workers might be able to restore it. He gave me an estimate and they took it away to see what could be done. About two weeks later John returned it to me looking as good as new! I am so happy that John 1) noticed it and 2) had someone who could revive it! Although it was more work to restore it than John had estimated, he stuck to his original price, which I also appreciated. I am so happy with John's service that he is coming back to install a lighting fixture for me.

The cable company accidentally broke our attic door when installing a cable line. The attic door would not stay closed, meaning the stairs to the attic would not stay up. This was a real crisis two days before Christmas to have the stairs to the attic blocking the hallway to all of the bedrooms. John came out to the house right away, fitting us in between appointments, and fixed the door in about 10 minutes. John has been to our house previously to fix a door that other repair people had told us needed to be replaced. We love it that repairing is always his first option, not replacing. His extra effort is very much appreciated!

John had first come to give an estimate as I showed him what needed to be done. He fixed an issue that day with one of our toilets before I had even agreed to hire him! His charges seemed reasonable and we set up an appointment. On the day of our appointment, John and his crew of Joel and Mikey showed up on time and got to work right away. They were very conscientious and did the work until we were satisfied. All of the above tasks were completed in about 3-4 hours. John and Joel even reattached a couple of sofa springs for us for free! All in all, a great crew that goes beyond the contract to make sure that the customer is satisfied.
Description of Work: Replaced bathroom faucet and toilet handle and installed toilet paper holder. Replaced smoke detector battery for very high ceiling. Removed old caulk and applied fresh caulk around kitchen countertop/wall seams. Repaired and painted trim piece at end of countertop. Cleaned high ceiling fan. Adjusted lampshade on high ceiling chandelier and replaced bulb in high ceiling staircase. Reattached 2 sofa springs. This is the second time I've hired John. He is very good at coming up with ways to fix a problem. The first time he stacked my washer and dryer in my very small laundry room and it has been perfect! This time, John ordered and installed sliding doors for my pantry - he came up with ta creative way to replace what was a very ugly peg board sliding door. I highly recommend John and his crew.

I called John to get an estimate on hanging four light fixtures after an electric company quoted me an astronomical amount. After an inspection of my house, he determined that the exterior siding and eaves were in bad shape and the upcoming winter would only make the problems worse. I'd had my foundation repaired this summer and the space between the bricks and eaves hadn't moved back together, so I was aware of this. I was also aware of the rotten wood pieces. I hadn't really paid much attention to the seams and holes in the siding but knew it would be better to repair now rather than waiting. John gave me estimates on several projects, but due to cost, I decided to wait on some of the more "cosmetic" repairs and focus on the bigger projects. I'll have John come back next Spring or Summer to fix some other items. Apparently John and his crew are booked several weeks in advance, so I scheduled him for about 2 weeks after his inspection. He said his crew would arrive at 9A and they did, on the dot. He also estimated the job would conclude about 3P, and they finished about 15-20 minutes before that, even with the addition of replacing and painting the wood on the chimney, which he hadn't noticed on his prior estimate trip. The guys in his crew were nice and professional and cleaned up very well after their work. I'm pleased with the work and will use John and his crew again.
Description of Work: Three light fixtures were installed after removing old ones. Lots of old, rotten wood on exterior of house was removed, installed and painted, including wood around chimney on roof. Filled many holes in exterior siding with chaulk.

They performed the services promptly and did a fine job. John charged me what he told me he would charge me. I have invited them back to install a new bathroom vanity when it arrives. They finished on a Saturday afternoon and his two helpers were in a hurry to get somewhere; in their haste, they forgot to reinstall some blinds and a towel bar, and left a heavy mirror in my child's bedroom that I could not move by myself. If they had taken another 15 minutes, the job would have been perfect.
Description of Work: John's Handyman painted a bathroom and laundryroom, plus parts of another bathroom, as well as a mirror. John and his 2 assistants also re-caulked a bathtub and shower and removed an old bathroom vanity. The used a fungicide in the bathroom paint, which hopefully will eliminate a mold issue we have had.

I spent about $400 to $500 for their service. They said that they could fix the tiles for us. So, they did that and they did a really good job. I would highly recommend them to others. They were very conscientious and did what they said they were going to do. They had to leave because the weather was really bad since it was during the stormy time. They had to get out of the pool because we were having a storm. So, they came back the next day and finished it up. I would definitely use their services in the future too. In fact, I have asked him to give me some quotes on a few other things that I would like to do later. He is very good.
Description of Work: I used John's Handyman Service just before Memorial Day for some electrical work. They repaired the wall plugs that needed to be repaired and fixed the wiring that was loose. They also put an outdoor one back in the socket with a cover. There were some tiles in the swimming pool that had come off because of the cold weather and they went in and put the tiles back on.
