I have a 3 door garage and the double car side jammed and didn't open one evening so I called O'Brien having seen their ads often in the Valpak coupons that come to the house. I was told by the technician the spring is gone and the cost of replacing it. I was then told the rollers were bad so needed replacing. I had bought a new garage door opener at Costco and asked if it could be installed on the single door garage and as he didn't know the model he couldn't do it but quoted $350 to fit his garage opener. I was later told the opener comes with 1 remote only and the additional remote will be $29.99. Ofcourse I needed 2 remotes so added that to my bill. Fair enough I had no idea that the garage door opener and remote will end up costing me $410 but then to see the price of the same opener on Home Depot's website for $128 (Which I can get with a further 10% off there with a Military discount) really made me wonder what the profit margin on this installation and machine truly is. I also found another garage door company advertising a similar model (Craftsman) with 2 remotes and installed for $235. I am very disappointed and left feeling a bit ripped off now that I had 2 of the garage doors openers installed at $730, purely based on trusting a company and its technician. To top it off, I was also further charged $190 as labor cost, $38 service call out fee and tax of $126.38 making my grand total $1658.33. My trash bin was filled up with heavy bent metal rails and debris and the 2 garage openers cardboard boxes. Surely they could have hauled away all the debris as most companies who do any services around the house usually do or asked to place those kind of items in our personal trash bin. I have been waiting for 2 days with various technicians promising to come and finish the job however I am still chasing this up with several phone calls to the OBrien call centre and a lot of my time involved with ensuring the job is finished by them! I definitely think this is a company I would veer away from in the future and anyone who does go ahead and use them GET A WRITTEN QUOTE FIRST detailing the exact work and costs!!!!! UPDATE 9/20/13.....We have got a partial refund of the cost from O'Brien Garage Doors and am glad that this has been sorted out in a more amicable way for my family!

I called and scheduled an appointment. The tech came and did some work. It did not actually fix part of the problem. They came back the next day and gave me a discount on additional service that was needed. I wish the first tech had fixed the problem the first time, but they were very easy to work with.

I had this company do repairs on my door, but found out later they did not put tension on the springs, causing a safety hazard. This repair happened a couple of years ago, but I recently joined Angie's List. I originally called O'Brien because one of the side cables had come off its spool. They fixed this problem, but caused a more serious one. When the cable came off again three months later O'Brien could not come out when I wanted them and I called another company. From them I found out that the O'Brien technician had failed to put tension on the springs when he did the original repair. The motor alone was lifting the door without the help of the torsion springs! This failure had put extra strain on the motor and all the other parts of the door, causing the cable to come off again. Plus, failure to put tension on the springs was a safety hazard. If the motor had failed, no one would have had the strength to open the door manually or be able to lift the door off a person or obstruction. I also found out the charge for fixing the unwound cable was excessive and O'Brien overcharged me. I would not recommend them to anyone.

This report ask me "Would you use this company/individual again in the future?" I marked yes, because, even though I felt cheated and misled, it is possible the quality of the materials, the quality of the installation and performance of the installer, may be a better experience than the service charge issue. What ticked me off was when I made the appt, the woman on the phone made no mention there was a $38 service call fee - just to get an estimate. No actual work was done, but I was charged just for him to show up and write some numbers on a piece of paper. The service tech also made no mention of the service charge when he arrived. The service tech said the $38 would be applied towards any work done. Big deal, a whopping 2.95% credit, for money I have already paid. Now I feel mislead by O'Brien Garage Doors two times in one day. So, in effect, they are penalizing me for justing getting an estimate to see if I want to spend hundreds or thousands of dollars with them in the future. This leaves me with bad feelings towards O'Brien Garage Doors. So now I am telling everyone to beware, of how O'Brien Garage Doors works.

I really liked O'Briens responsiveness and promptness. When I called them they could have had someone come to look at it right then. That was awesome because if we couldn't have gotten our garage door down then we would have had to leave it up all night; so that's wonderful that they do that. When the guy came he was prompt, friendly and got right on it. We were really thinking the track was going to have to be replaced and we got a quote on that; and we also had a coupon from their website that if we did service the service call would be free (which I told the lady on the phone when we scheduled the service call). When the guy was finished it was amazing how well the garage door was working and how quiet it was! It wasn't until the end of the service that we had any problems. First, the guy wrote us up a service ticket and charged us for the service call; when I told him that we had a coupon he got irritated that I wanted to change the price! He said, "Well I wasn't charging you for tax; but if you really want to use the coupon I'll put the tax back on." -- Like I was putting him out or something. Also, the price was about $150 more than we were expecting from what was said on the phone (although we didn't get a quote on exactly what he did); plus he charged us for labor on the whole project and also on a part of the project. How does that work? And he made a comment that in the field he charges a lot more for garage door openers than what I was quoted on the phone by his company. So that tells me that he charges what ever he wants to. So bottom line is this: If you use O'Briens make sure you not only get the price over the phone, but also from the service guy before he starts the repairs. We will do that in the future and use this company in the future, but with a little more wisdom next time. :O)

Prompt appointment. Install date was set - but later was pushed out by a few days because of "ordering glitch" in their providers operating system. Once doors arrived, they were quick to install and did a good job. The only problem I had was that they left dirty hand prints on the doors and freshly painted walls (painted only 4 days earlier) . . . but even more upsetting was the spray lubricant they allowed to overspray on top of both doors. I ened up having to repaint atop both doors to make it right. So their work was good, but if you decide to use them, be sure to stress up front that you expect a CLEAN finished outcome.

Very well. Got next day service - this was not an emergency. Office called me 20 minutes ahead of time to tell me the tech was on his way. He immediately identified the problem and fixed it. He was so fast and professional, I went ahead and had him replace the rollers on my garage door. The tech did not try and sell me the rollers nor anything else. I knew they were old and cheap and would soon need replacement - door made a lot of squeaks going up and down. Having him do the work while he was already here, saved me both future aggravation and a later service call. The garage door had been acting up for some time, and I postponed calling for service because I figured that anyone I called would insist I had serious door problems and needed a new opener at the very least. I was very relieved by the integrity of my service person.
