Me and my fiancee recently had the displeasure of hiring Quality Handyman Services. The sole proprietor's name is Steve Lee. We hired him to paint and install tile in our newly purchased house in Del Valle, Texas. He came recommended by our real estate agent and we thought that he must be OK.So he came in as the lowest bidder and we gave him the contract. He told us it would only take about a week to a week and a half for completion. It took almost three weeks. He KNEW that we were installing slate tile downstairs, ceramic tile upstairs, and having the entire interior of the house painted. He first painted the entire interior and after he took notes on what we wanted, he screwed it up! He painted a stairway wall (which is a pretty big wall) the wrong color. He then proceeded to say that the cost to us was another $50 for the extra paint that he bought to paint the wall. I corrected him in saying that it was his fault for painting the wall the wrong color and that is why he didn't have enough paint to paint the rest of the project. The quality of the paint job was mixed. Great in some parts, horrible in others, such as not pushing down hard enough to cover the wall with paint in the textured finish, missing parts altogether, and not covering the old paint in some trim areas. Unfortunately, we only found out about this when we started to take a closer look at the job after he was gone. I took the quick glance over during the final walk through and should have taken my time. That was my fault. He then proceeeded to do the slate tile. To get the bid he said that he would provide the mortar for the job (me and my fiancee heard him say this) and at the end he said after discussion back and forth that he would only cover half the cost. He lied about this. Every DETAIL about the job should be drawn up if you decide to take on this inept contractor. He again did a so-so job on laying the slate tile down because the tile's heights in the mortar were uneven. After checking into this I found out that it is difficult to get the slate tile heights uniform because of the nature of the uneven thickness of real stone, but a few areas should have been redone with other pieces to see if a better fit could have been accomplished. This led up to the worst part of the job. We bought the sealer and enhancer for the tile and he laid it down incorrectly. He did it with a mop instead of a sponge and the amount of pools on top of the tile were painfully obvious. What a mess! He told us that this was normal and there was no way around it. We took his word at first but after looking into it he was again wrong. He is a conniving sorry sack. We had to hire someone else to strip it and reapply the sealer the correct way with a sponge after his job was over. Because of the excessive amount of sealer he applied, the grout collected dust with the sealer and turned it white instead of the dark charcoal it was originally. We had to hire the same people to clean the grout. Why didn't we call him back to get him to redo it? I will get to that below.During the final walk through, he was paid and additional $85 to paint the upstairs master bedroom closet because we had previously thought that we would paint it. So before he was to accomplish this we told him we needed it painted before Friday which was move in day. He was supposed to do this on the Tuesday before but he had to go out of town to El Paso. He said he would get his helper to do the job on Wednesday. He left no indication by phone that he wasn't able to do this and let us know THURSDAY. We had no way of knowing what was going on because we lived almost an hour and a half away and was not checking on the house. So we painted the closet ourselves and asked for the $85 back. We also wanted to talk about the discrepancies (paint, tile sealer, etc.). He stopped communicating with us at this point and could not be reached no matter how much I texted or called even though he said we could call him for any problems. He took the $85 and didn't seem to care even after I called him dishonest for taking it for work not done. He also: Mixed the mortar with a paddle inside the house getting tiny specks of mortar on the paint, he used our cooler to rinse off his mortar soaked tools, and he screwed up the threshold grout at the front door. And the saddest part about this guy is that he has a drinking problem. We didn't know he was drinking on the job! He had mentioned rum and coke as a way to relax before. He threw away a Captain Morgan's rum bottle in our recycling container along with other construction debris. He didn't even try to hide it. He was the only person working on our house. He showed up at my fiancees work to talk with her one day and she said the liquor on his breath was overpowering. Think again about hiring this guy.Our real estate agent was shocked about all this and does not recommend him anymore. Me and my fiancee have photographs of the work he did and we pride ourselves as being honest people. I have read many similar stories from others about him now that I have joined Angie's List. Just in case this "contractor" tries to rebutt this review I am willing to send anybody the pictures via email. Just contact jdvolosin@yahoo.com. Save yourself the time and expense of fixing his shoddy workmanship. This is why he says he is and does not have to be licensed and/or bonded. He couldn't be if he tried.

We have worked with Steve before and he is typically reliable. This time, he showed up on time (as he had in the past) and took a look at the toilet leak. I mentioned to him that the job might require a plumber. After examining the leak he said it was a relatively easy fix, which was great news. He went to get the parts and repaired the toilet. Unfortunately, the leak continued (and may have worsened). When I called Steve about it, he came by again (without any additional charge) and tried again. Again, the toilet still leaked. I called again and he was out of town. That wasn't a problem; I just wrapped some towels around the bottom of the toilet and waited for his call (once he returned from vacation). Unfortunately, he never got back to us. Steve really is a great guy, but this time he fell short on service. It may be just a fluke, but it was a dramatic change from the services we had received previously. My concern was that the leak was (1) more complicated than he thought at first or (2) made worse by his work.
Description of Work: Steve stopped in to fix what we thought was a minor toilet leak.

The job was done fantastically, very professional. We couldn't have been more pleased. Steve got there the next morning and completed the job with in hours. Other handyman companies wanted days to evaulate and the schedule about a week out at more $$.
Description of Work: We had our wooden fence blow down in high winds and we needed the work done asap as we were selling the home in just a couple of days. Also, we had dogs that could get out and run off. The need to get this done asap was very important. Reguired replacing post and two sections of fencing.

I used Steve a month prior on one of my rental homes. The project was small and I was very satisfied with everything that was done. I also found Steve to be a nice guy with a pleasant demeanor. Consequently, I used him again on a new rental home I had just purchased. Although there was nothing major, the list of repairs was long on this older home. His estimates are generated from a computer program which creates cryptic and non-specific estimates. Since his prices were in line with my budget, I took the time to create an itemized list, room by room, of all repairs and materials that were his responsibility. That was the document that he and I signed. His carpentry work is very good. Everything else was completed to my satisfaction until a month later when my tenant told me that the master shower was dripping. Since the itemized list included installing new hardware for the master shower I called Steve and left a message. I left 4 messages over 3 days and heard nothing. The drip turned into a constant leak in that time so I had to spend $135 for a plumber correct the problem. The plumber told me that the incorrect valve had been installed and for some reason valve was incorrectly packed in silicon caulk.
Description of Work: Repair sheetrock and trim. Repair and replace shower valves and faucets as needed. Install garbage disposal, light fixtures, ceiling fans. Re-grout tub surround tiles.

The first meeting to develop the bid went very well. I was given a very fair price for the work I wanted done. The bid was specific as to what was included. I agreed to put up the paint. We had a glitch on the start date due to a scheduling conflict. Steve was very apoligetic and offered a significant discount on the work. I was pleased with the quality and precsion of the work. The paint job was done well. Boards were cu well to fit. I am very pleased and plan to use Steve again for other jobs I have.

Steve came out to do the estimate. Since our shower floor tile was cracking and loose, we were extremely worried that water was leaking out from the shower. Steve provided a detailed estimate on what might need to be repaired, possible new shower pan and replacing wall tile around the floor. He was very accommodating to scheduling the time of repair. We had to cancel our first schedule as our baby was due a week earlier than expected. Steve came out a month later and completed the work as scheduled. He described in detail how he was going to do the work. Part way through the work, Steve let us know that there was no water leakage and that our shower pan was in excellent condition. He explained that we had a fiberglass mesh pan and it is extremely durable. This lessened the amount of work required to repair the tile and Steve was extremely fair in re-negotiating our amount due to less work that was required, i.e. no wall tile repair needed. When our cove base was repaired, I noticed that the tile was somewhat protruding and was sloped toward the outside of the shower, when it should be sloped toward the shower drain. Steve's apprentice was working on the cove base at the time, and Steve had no issues with removing all the tile and redoing the cove base correctly, himself. At the end, Steve was very communicative and did a great job addressing all our concerns. And to top it all off, Steve guaranteed his workmanship for life.
Description of Work: The job was to repair the tile in our master bath shower that was cracking. Steve was to remove the ceramic tile and set new mud. The shower pan was to be replaced with a rubber membrane pan liner. To fit it appropriately, it was estimated that the ceramic tile on the wall around the pan base would have to be removed and retiled. The shower walls would need 1/2" cement board and also repair the 6"x4" cove base. The shower would be cleaned and sealed with silicone.

In general Steve and his assistant did a good job. He was a little slow in responding a few times and cancelled our first appointment a few minutes before he was supposed to be there. Once we rescheduled he showed up right on time and worked very quickly and was a pleasure to deal with. The re-caulking work was done well but I did notice some slight damage to the tub faucet a couple of days later. The faucet had to be loosened to caulk behind it and it appears their pliers bent and tore the opening in the faucet. It's an old fixture and despite the damage still works fine, but I would have appreciated being notified of the damage.

Horrible, Horrible, Horrible After seeing that the roof was not on a slant that we requested on the first day of work from Steve - it just got worse. Steve finished the job june 9, On July 1 - we notify Steve that the porch was leaking, roof was crooked, and mold was growing inside panels and trim was falling down. Today is october 11 - over 100 days of poor communication and excuses and many many many missed appointments from Steve - ( he forgot, his birthday, lost our phone number, lost repair sheet and now he has the swine flu) our porch still leaks, roof is still crooked, the new panels that Steve put in are uneven, no mold because he took off all the panels and did not replace them as promised and now our fan wires are just hanging from the ceiling. Steve left wood in our yard, loose nails and trim boards on the ground, Steve can say all he wants in reply but we have everything documented and will show them to anyone to see. Steve refuses to call us all communication was done by email. We are very disappointed with Steve and will never use him or refer his company to anyone, Beware, his feedback is either hit or miss, and we missed with Steve, just Horrible

Found Steve Lee on Angies List and asked for a bid to repair and paint wrought iron fence and banisters on the back deck. Steve responded to my email promptly and arranged a time to meet. He arrived as scheduled, evaluated the job and provided a bid. His bid was quite a bit less than others who bid the same job. He knew we were working on a deadline and fit us in between jobs. Start was delayed a short time while he waited on the welder he subcontracted to do the wrought iron repair. Steve and one employee painted several hundred feet of fencing and banisters/deck railing. Did it in the time he said he would for the amount he bid. He was easy to reach and responsive during the work. Two reasons I can't give him an "A": first - they left about 2 feet of fence unpainted because it was next to a white limestone post and had to be hand painted. They forgot to do it before they left and agreed to return but haven't (30 days since he was here). Second reason is the overspray that occurred around the house. Several places where the railing connects to the (stucco) house they didn't do an adequate job masking and I have black paint on tan stucco. There was also overspray onto newly laid slate tiles on a set of stairs. He agreed to come clean up the overspray and like the agreement to finish the two feet of fencing that needs to be painted it hasn't been done. I would hire Steve again for some jobs but would make sure to have detailed discussions up front and evaluate all the work before payment was complete.

Steve is a pleasant man. He showed up for the estimate and work promptly. Unfortunately, I had to go to school after he and his team started on the work that Tuesday. So I couldn?t inspect the work until later that night. The floor is fine. The gas connection work is fine. However the electric plug was in a different place and there were several issues with the door: fit loosely, replaced some of a rotten board and not all of it, left the foam sealant around the door unsightly. When Steve came by for the check the next day we discussed the problems, and he promised to fix them. Today (June 28 ? over a month later) he did finish everything to my satisfaction. As I say, he?s a very nice man, and I would recommend him in spite of our original problems. He was always polite and tried hard to please me. He?s a busy guy so it took him a while to get back to me, but he did.
Description of Work: 1. Place a plywood floor in my utility room to level the space for my new washer/dryer. It's an older wooden pier and beam so leveling is an ongoing theme. 2. Extend the gas connection 6" higher due to the higher floor 3 Hang a new exterior door from my utility room to a small porch. 4. Replace the wood under the door frame before installing the new door & help weatherize the door. 5. Put an electric plug on the exterior wall of my utility room utilizing existing electric in the same wall. All this happened over 6 weeks ago while I was still in school so I forget the exact date and price.

To whosoever it may concern I regret that unfortunately we can never please everybody and reports like this end up on my website and anytime someone feels pleased by giving a bad grade I think that this is their way of trying to hurt the small businessman who is just trying to make a living and delivering the best work money can by. I apologize to the member for his time spent punching buttons on the computer but if you look at my reports I think the proof is in the reports.

This is an update to a previous post. We hired Steve to repair the skirting under our house, install an access door to the crawl-space, and install a vent in the ceiling of our attached shed. The work was not not done well and we just discovered that the vent leaks when it rains. I had previously posted that Steve had been unresponsive to my attempts to contact him regarding this matter; however, it turns out that he was on vacation. He has offered us a refund for the vent.

Steve Lee is the reason I (and I think most people) joined Angie's list: To find someone who is excellent at what they do, someone who charges a fair price, someone who you can trust. From the first meeting until the work was finished and met my approval, I found Steve to be professional, courteous, a good communicator, prompt, skilled and he even helped brainstorm better and often less expensive solutions to our problems. The process was easy: We called Steve and told him what we needed. He came out to look at the job and very quickly gave us an estimate. We scheduled the work with him and before we knew it everything was done at or under budget. He gave us detailed and accurate estimates so we knew every step of the way what the charges would be. And to be honest, I got several estimates from different sources, I found Steve's prices to match or beat his competitors in all areas from painting to carpentry to electrical. I couldn't be more satisfied. And as a side note, Steve has a LOT of knowledge about the needs of people trying to get thier houses "market ready" He is sensitive to the timing and deadlines, knowledgable about inspection reports and codes and worked well coordinating with out realtor to make sure potential buyers were aware of the upgrades that had been done.
Description of Work: Steve Lee and his team helped us get 2 houses ready to sale and then performed a complete, detailed conversion of the garage on our new home. He repaired cracks in the walls, sprayed texture and painted rooms, did work repairing gutters, flashing and other minor roof repairs, addressed some plumbing issues, fixed electrical switches, repaired doors that weren't shutting properly, windows that were rattling, dozens of small fixes throughout our old houses. Then he did an excellent job doing our garage conversion. What was once an average garage is now two beautiful and functional interior rooms. A Laundry room with walk-in closet and a gameroom. Excellent job framing, wiring, floating/taping, scraping the popcorn cielings, painting - he took care of every detail - Complete with air conditioning vents, ceiling fans, vinyl sheeting in the laundry room. And the work he did on the exterior is also great - hardiplank siding, porch light, and paint all look as if it is part of the original house. Steve also added a passthrough in our kitchen and added insulation to attic. There was nothing we requested that Steve and his team could not accomplish! A one stop shop to get all the things crossed off of your list.
