+ -1 moreAn agent came to my house to give me an estimate. I was impressed with his description of NorthStar's services and record, but his estimate turned out to be the highest of three I received. When I told the NorthStar agent this, he offered me a $1500 discount off the original estimate. I considered this offer very fair and generous and was happy to accept it. The men came on June 5 to pack up the house and on June 6 to load the truck. These were long days, but the men worked hard, and my husband and I were impressed by how carefully and substantially they padded the furniture and packed the boxes. We met the man who would be driving the truck and unloading our belongings in Indiana. He was friendly and gave us his phone number so that we could call him at any time to find out his location and the likely date when he would arrive at our new house. We did call him a couple of times for updates. The driver called us a couple of days before he arrived and also the day before to tell us when he would be at the house. He said he would show up around 8-8:30 am, but he didn't actually appear until 11:00 am. I would have appreciated a call letting us know that he would be later than he had said. Once they arrived, the driver and his helper worked very hard unloading all of our things in hot weather. They were pleasant and patient when I couldn't decide where I wanted certain furniture pieces to go and were willing to re-situate my heavy desk several times. They also brought in my massive old upright piano and struggled for a long time to get a sofa through a narrow doorway--all this they did without complaint or any signs of impatience or fatigue. The one disappointment was that a rocking chair that belonged to my grandmother had an arm broken. The driver pointed out this damage to us and advised me to make a note of it on the final document I signed. He also had me explain the damage to his supervisor, whom he called that night. Eventually NorthStar gave me $200 toward the cost of getting the chair repaired. They were not legally obligated to provide this payment, as they were only liable for $.60 per pound, and the rocking chair weighed 40 pounds, but they told me they wanted to offer a more meaningful sum to help compensate for the damage to my family heirloom. Although I regret that the rocking chair was damaged, I feel that NorthStar did everything reasonable to make up for the loss. No other possessions suffered any damage. A long-distance move is a stressful experience, but NorthStar overall was capable, responsive to our needs and concerns, professional and effective. Especially now that the move is behind me, I feel they did a good job, and I would definitely recommend them to others.
Description of Work: NorthStar packed my furniture and almost all of my belongings (I packed books and papers from my office at work and brought those home for them to store on the truck). They drove the load from California and unloaded it at my new home in Indiana. They unwrapped the furniture and placed it where I asked them to in the house. Some items required moderate assembly, such as attaching a hutch to a desk and legs onto a table.

+ -1 moreThey were great, arrived early, started the move right away. We had a mess in our apartment as many things weren't packed. Our apartment was on the third floor and we had an elevator but the entrance to it was tight. Also our 2 bedrooms were downstairs and the stairs up made a turn which made everything difficult. So, they had to disassemble the kids' bunk bed, the office desk, etc, and make it work to bring them up. The point of the day was my couch. We have a huge 3 seats leather couch that we don't even remember how we got it in the living room. The movers did everything day could to take it out of the building. They tried the stairs, the elevator, the fire stairs, but it was close to impossible. So the last resource was through the window and they did it, the couch went down 3 floors and it didn't even take long. Once we got to the new house, which is bigger and with more space to work, they assembled everything and put everything in place in 2 1/2 hrs. I would definitively have them again for another moving.hird floor
Description of Work: Move form an 2 story townhouse on the third floor to a 3 story house 18 miles away. The stair in the townhouse was very tight and made a corner which made the move difficult and the entrance to the elevator also had a corner that made it difficult, too.

+ -1 moreThe 3 guys - Herman, Yobani and Erick were all professional, punctual and effective. Called for an estimate originally to move out of my apartment. Not only did they call 24 hours in advance to confirm appointment, but also the driver called 1 hr. approximately before arriving at my place. They packed everything neatly, were fast, and even put back my bed frame back together even though it couldn't fit originally in the bedroom door it had to go into. They took it apart & put it back together. Kudos to the professionalism of this company. Would definitely use them again! Overall great experience,

+ -1 moreThe booking agent from NorthStar was very helpful and provided a quote within 30 minutes of my request. When I requested an additional mover the booking agent again provided an updated quote. The moving manager contacted me the night before the move to confirm the time and location. The movers showed up on time. Not only were they prepared and organized with a clear understanding of the job, but they had great attitudes, in addition to being smart and with excellent packing and loading skills. It is clear the they had been trained to make sure that our belongings were protected and safe when our POD was repacked and items were brought into our new home.
Description of Work: We were moving furniture from two PODS, putting part of the furniture to a new home and consolidating the rest into a single POD. The movers had to come to the PODS storage facility, load a truck and then unload the truck at our new home.

+ -1 moreOverall it was a successful move and I would recommend them....their pricing was very competitive and they stuck to the quoted fee. They could do a better job in keeping you up to date as to where your good were at any given moment so you could plan more precisely.
Description of Work: Moved cross country from California to Connecticut. The pickup and packing went very well. My only complaint is that the goods were moved too many separate times. From the house to a medium sized truck; from that truck to a holding warehouse; from the warehouse to a larger truck for the actual cross country trip. Upon arrival in our town the goods needed to be downloaded into a smaller truck again for final delivery. They could not procure a large enough truck for the transfer so it took four trips...three men did the packing and loading but only two did the unloading...so many transfers increase the chance of damage...Many of the boxes were squashed because they were stacked repeatedly.. It was only due to my wife's superb packing skills that things were not damaged..

All the staff I reached via phone were extremely responsive, and their email followups throughout the whole experience were prompt and appropriately detailed. The crew arrived right on time for the pick up and completed the work very efficiently. They wrapped furniture and loaded everything else, which was packed and ready. My load was to be combined with a bigger load, and once this was done, the driver called to say he was on the road. He checked in with me a couple of times over the next few days to give ETA, which I appreciated. Although he was later than expected and had to move the furniture into a shuttle, when he did arrive, he and his co-worker efficiently unloaded the truck. Out of the whole load, only one coat hook was broken. While one always hopes that everything will go smoothly, we all know it often does not. So what really counts is how a company responds when something does go wrong. I was extremely impressed with how every NorthStar staff person responded?especially Wendy, who handled my claim for the broken hook. Usually, when I deal with customer service at a company it is I who must do all the followup and chase after them. This was a rare situation where the opposite occurred. Wendy consistently called me to assist and check on the status of the repair?I was actually shocked! She was thoughtful, friendly, and helpful. Because of their top notch customer service and very good moving services, I would recommend NorthStar and I would use them again!

+ -1 moreWe were quoted a flat rate after a walk-through of our home, which we felt was fair. On moving day, we were given a window of arrival and the driver gave us updates so that we knew exactly when they would be arriving. The 5 guys were very hard working and did an excellent job. When there was minor damage to the ceiling, they promptly repaired and took care of the problem. The company honored the flat rate, even after it was discovered that they couldn't back the truck up as close as they had hoped to the house on account of some low-hanging power lines. The job took them an extra hour or two because of the extra distance. Overall they did an excellent job getting our furniture and boxes into the right rooms. We were very glad we went with a company as professional and service-oriented as Norstar.

+ -1 moreI called to get an estimate, and spoke with Stefy. She was very nice, and informative. They use a minimum of three (3) men, and during the week a minimum of three (3) hours time, at $85/hr. The gas fee is included in the hourly fee. Yeah!!! No extra 8% added on top of the final price. Also, California state law requires movers to charge double drive time, with a minim of a 30 min charge. So if your move is only 15 minutes away, they have to charge for 30 minutes. Luckily, it is included as part of the three (3) hour minimum. I booked with them for a Wednesday AM move. They sent 3 men, and a 26ft truck. The arrival time was between 8-10am. They guys arrived 15 mins early...a good, and bad thing. We weren't quite prepared for them. All three men were pleasant. Boy did they move quickly. They had the truck packed up in 1 1/2 hours. We did not have them move everything. Looking back on it, I wish I had. They were efficient, quick, and careful. They asked if I wanted them to pack anything, and provided wardrobe boxes, and moving blankets at no extra fee. We needed more tape, and also had our mattress wrapped for transport..an extra charge that was around $50 for both. At our new home, they quickly unpacked the truck, and put down boxes and furniture wherever we wanted them. Our couch would not fit through the front door at first. After a few minutes of trying to figure it out, they ended up taking off the front door to get it in. They, of course, put it back on. They also moved out the old washer, on 2nd floor, and replaced it with the washer we brought with us. They took care to not damage the wood stairs. All in all it took 4 hours, with drive time, to complete the move. I was going to get the Angie's List discount, but one mover told me about a deal on Yelp. It is a coupon you purchase for $50, to get $100 off. Essentially, it lets you get $50 off the move, which was $20 more than the Angie's list deal. I only had one broken item, a bottle of Sake, which they brought to my attention right away. I didn't do a great job of packing that box, so I know the fault was mine. Everything else was undamaged. I would hire this company again.

+ -1 moreThe company gave me a $1000 cheaper estimate than a competitor and was able to come on fairly short notice. Although they did come a day after they were expected, but did give me a slight discount for this. I had to regularly call for updated on status and to get payment scheduled etc. The driver wasn't very good which made him unable to get onto my street. So I had to pay for shuttle service. Also when dropping my furniture at the storage in Maryland the driver could not pull into the pull up storage. This is something that the storage manager said most drivers can do. They wanted to charge me for this but the manager of the storage facility made it clear that that was not typical. The driver was exhausted. They also removed their blankets upon arrival something I believed I had paid for or would have been willing to do.

+ -1 moreIlan Dahan came out to my house right on time for our scheduled estimate. He walked through the house and we agreed on what would move because I was getting rid of stuff in a garage sale. It was fast and efficient. He gave me a "not to exceed" estimate of about $1800. Ilan was efficient and professional. The day of the move the crew of 4 came out right on time and got started. I don't remember the name of the guy in charge but he did a great job. I was concerned about some stuff not fitting through doors, especially at the new address but they were able to get everything in where it belonged. The crew wrapped everything in plastic and tape for protection. They pointed out any existing damage prior to wrapping. They were able to complete the job in 8 hrs rather than the estimated 10 so the price ended up at $1468. It helped that I did all the packing myself to keep the cost down. Ilan and the team did a great job and I would definitely use NorthStar again. On time, fast, efficient, professional - can't do better than that!

They have giant TV boxes and wrapped the TV's really carefully. They packed my kitchen, using paper to wrap every item. Very nice and detailed job. Description of Work: My fiance and I scheduled a move to our new house. We moved from a 2-bedroom condo in Laguna Niguel to a larger house in Anaheim Hills. The whole process with Northstar was extremely smooth. From the initial call with Dianna, to Gil's visit a week before the move to obtain a binding estimate to the actual move with Ezekiel as a lead, I have not experienced any major issues with this company. All our stuff, including all patio furniture and stuff from the garage, including an extra living room set that we acquired on the morning of the move were packed, transported and unloaded in less than 4 1/2 hours. We did take our time to pack all the small things and appliances prior to the move, but still. It was a blazing fast move that cost us more than $100 less than what was stated in the original estimate! I am yet to find a single scratch or an issue with any of the furniture. Two minor items - I was told in the initial phone conversation with Dianna that the cost will be lower than it turned out to be, but Gil explained all the costs in detail when he visited our place a week prior to the move. Also, the movers didn't really want to interact in English, even though they clearly spoke the language very well. Very minor things, so I give Northstar thumbs up and will use them again if we ever move from our new house.

They worked very hard to get things done as quickly as possible taking virtually no breaks over the ~6 hours of heavy work. Their prices were reasonable and no hidden fees or charges. Overall, definitely would recommend and use NorthStar again. As usual with a move, some scuffs and bangs on a few items but nothing totally unexpected under the circumstances. We had some hard elements (needed to remove a door to fit a treadmill through) and the guys were persistent and made it work. Again, great experience with NorthStar!
Description of Work: The performed a somewhat local move of our 3bd home. We had packed up the boxes and wrapped some furniture but they were responsible for additional furniture wrapping/padding and all loading and unloading of belongings.

+ -1 moreThe movers were scheduled to arrive between 8 and 10 am. They came right around 8 am. As soon as they got there, they started working and they were fast (which they remained throughout the entire move)! breaking down furniture, wrapping it with furniture pads and that plastic wrap that they use. The furniture items we had included cal king mattress and bed frame, end tables, crib, several dressers, large sofa, a couple of televisions, dining table, washer/dryer, etc. They were very gentle with all of our items. We still have a few things to unpack but thus far, we haven't found anything that was broken in the move. Also, despite us having moved many things by ourselves ahead of time, there was still A LOT for the NorthStar movers to move. I realized that as I looked into the HUGE van that they brought and saw how much space our items took up. They took about 3.5 hours to load everything into the van (including disassembling furniture, wrapping it, etc.) and then another approx 2 hours to unload everything into the house. I think unloading would've gone a little more quickly except that they had to remove a door in order to bring our sofa into the house. They had a short lunch break (35-40 mins, which they don't charge you) in between loading and unloading. Anyway, they were excellent and I would recommend them to friends and will likely use them again in the future.
Description of Work: We moved from a 3 bd/2.5 bath condo, approx 1350 sq ft. We boxed and moved many of the smaller items ourselves ahead of time and NorthStar helped us with all of the large pieces as well as smaller items that we hadn't boxed and moved yet (many of the day-to-day essentials that we needed prior to the big move date). NorthStar sent 3 men who did an excellent job breaking down the furniture, protecting and wrapping the furniture, moving it into the truck, transporting from old condo to new house, and unloading and re-assembling the furniture.

Description of Work: Move from 2BR 2BA one-story duplex in Camarillo, to a 4th floor 2BR 2BA condo in Encino, plus an additional delivery to an address in Sherman Oaks. Gil came to do the estimate; very neatly dressed, well-spoken, low-key, not pushy or salesy, just very personable and quietly competent in the way he went about doing the estimate. He made sure to fully and clearly explain everything and to answer my questions fully as well. He provided me a "Not-to-exceed" estimate using 2 trucks and 5 guys, just to make sure the move got done in one day. The price was very reasonable. Because I was a little gun-shy from bad moving services, I sent Gil several emails to ask for further clarification, as well as calling a couple of times to do the same. He always responded within a few hours, always same day, either by email or phone or both. His responses were thorough, and he addressed the issues I raised in very straightforward manner. His responsiveness (plus great reviews on Angie's List) was a major reason I chose this company from the 3 estimates I obtained. North Star's office called a couple of days ahead to confirm the moving date and details, very courteous and clear about the contract, etc. The gentleman assured me that the crew would make every effort to be there by 8 a.m. I was concerned about that, to make sure we got the move done in one day, since we were moving 35 miles from a one story 2 BR 2 BA duplex to a 4th floor 2 BR 2 BA condo, which required moving everything through the front door of the building, all the way to the back and up to the 4th floor. Also, the move included a second delivery to a different address 5 miles away, which would have to be done after the main move was completed. So I was concerned about the time it would all take. The crew showed up at 8 a.m. on the dot. They were all wearing North Star shirts, and were all dressed neatly and cleanly. The whole crew came in to introduce themselves and Oscar, the crew chief, made sure he fully understood all that needed to be done, then the crew got right to work. By 11 a.m. they had loaded the trucks; by 5 p.m., they had moved the last item into the condo, and we were on our way to the second delivery, which went extremely well also. All our items were handled well and safely. They were very careful and respectful of our stuff, and knowledgeable about how to manage moving the large refrigerator through small doorways, etc. Oscar, Alfredo, Herman, Jose and Zack all did a great job! Oscar went over the entire invoicing with me, and sure enough, the "Not to exceed" price was honored even though they had to go over in time a little bit beyond what was estimated. I would recommend this moving company to anyone, and already have a couple of times.

+ -1 moreEstimator came out early and appraised the apartment. I asked for two estimates, a not-to-exceed estimate and a flat price. I ended up taking the not-to-exceed quote because, for some reason, that made me feel more comfortable. We had a small apartment and not very much furniture, so I felt like we could possibly have less than the 6,000 lb. quote. They gave me a load-out appt. window of between 9 and 11 AM, they (4 guys) showed up at 8. I hadn't finished packing, so they ended up having to pack some of the stuff. Lots of rolls of tape/shrink wrap/wardrobe boxes (extra costs) later they had packed the truck, then it was off to the storage space. Storage space was easy-peasy and they didn't even charge me for a long carry (75 ft. or more from site to truck= $100 I think), the actual distance was debatable (I measured it and it was around 75-80), but he could have just as easily charged me. The transport time window was for between 4-14 days, it ended up being 12. Movers showed up on time but with only two people. I wasn't too pleased with that and let them know, the driver said someone had flaked on him that morning, and when I called the dispatcher he said they usually don't need that many people for load-in, which is true but with only two people you add a bunch of time to the job. I just wanted it done as fast as possible, so I ended up helping out by unwrapping all the blanketed and shrink wrapped items. That would generally be all right, but I felt like paying that amount of money should come with certain amenities. Whether the lack of a third person was Northstar or the driver I will never know, but it seems like there should have been three (one unloading, and the other two hauling and unwrapping). Granted the two that did the job were nice and capable, it became a matter of project completion time and my expectations for service (as a function of money spent). Overall, given my near complete lack of experience with movers, I had a thankfully uneventful move. A couple things were broken (my poor packing), but everything showed up (they had cross checked each box). The dispatchers were very competent and responsive, and each of the movers were capable and agreeable.
Description of Work: Interstate move of a 1 BR apartment + storage space from California to Pennsylvania, responsible for load out and load in and transport only (minor last minute packing).

They were very informative. The speedy was good. He sent me an email the quote the same afternoon. They know what they were doing. I do not know about the moving but they were wonderful when they gave the quote. I was not shocked by the quote. They were very punctual.

+ -1 moreEverything about this experience was outstanding! Before the move, Ron Cohen came out to my house to give me an estimate and to advise me about how to be most efficient. He told me where to purchase moving supplies at 50% off. The bid was very competitive, but after the movers were through they took nearly $300 off the bill because they finished under the estimated time. The four men were great and deserved a generous tip (which I gave them from my savings). They packed those things which I did not have ready and put everything where I designated. At the end, despite the fact that they had to be exhausted, they asked if I had anything I wanted them to move to a different spot. Wow! I was impressed. I don't plan to move again, but I do, I will definitely call Ron and his team.
Description of Work: NorthStar helped me move from my large home of 30 years to a new home. Lots and lots of "stuff".
