It was the best of times; it was the worst of times--literally. We contracted our move with NorthStar Moving Company one month before our scheduled move. NorthStar Moving Company showed up on time for our scheduled move with 5 energetic young men ready to move approximately 8,000 pounds of our possessions from our rental home to our new home. We contracted with NorthStar to pack our entire kitchen. Packing and loading went quickly and smoothly with good communication and enthusiasm by the crew. A little background: We are currently in the last stage of condo renovation; we were unable to get everything done prior to our move. Our newly installed wood floors are covered with a protective covering. Due to scheduling conflicts with our carpet installer, our second floor carpet installation was completed on the day of the move--five hours later than expected. Because of this, the crew could not move our furniture to the second floor. We asked the NorthStar team to unload all of our items either into our garage or our main floor living room. We asked them to return at a later time that day to move the necessary items after the carpeting install was complete. They told us that this would be no problem and would charge us for the just completed move and would charge us for the balance of the move at completion. The team was delayed returning due to the changing needs of another customer, but kept us apprised as to when they might return to finish the job. They were able to get to our home around 10:15 (pm!!) and after a few minutes finishing some popsicles for extra energy, they all worked hard to get our items to the desired locations in record time. The young men worked well as a team and didn?t seem bothered by the late hour. Thankfully one of the last things they did was to set up beds in two bedrooms. We were very tired but excited to finally have all of our stuff in our new home. It?s taken a few days but the realization that speed doesn?t equal quality is starting to become apparent to us. After the move, our freshly painted walls have a few gouges and many rubs and need to be repainted. Some of our furniture, old but well taken care of, now has move-related scratches and gouges. One high-value item has a large gouge. On August 13th we contacted NorthStar's office to begin the damage/claim process. Being that the condo renovation was completed late last week, we haven?t had much opportunity to look at all our moved items. We can see that some of our tables were left stacked top to top; I hesitate to look to see just how they fared. Some last minute packing shows little (if any) use of protective packing materials. One day before our rental walk-through, the day after our NorthStar move, we returned to the rental house to do some clean up. We were surprised to find one large pantry hadn?t been packed. Granted, my husband went through the house with Luis, the lead mover; unfortunately, both of them missed this pantry. On the day of the rental walk-through, both my husband and I checked each and every cabinet, closet, and pantry to make sure we?d removed all of our items and that the rental was in good condition. We were both surprised to find that one kitchen drawer still had items in it?pricey knives and other utensils. Had we not double-checked this drawer we?d have had to spend several hundred dollars replacing these items. When we contacted NorthStar regarding the unpacked pantry, they cut us a small check to cover our time and the cost of the packing materials we needed and a bit for inconvenience. We do need to stress that the NorthStar moving team members were likeable, enthusiastic, quick and worked really well together. They started our job early in the morning and, due to circumstances, completed it LATE in the evening. We have had several corporate moves and had high expectations for NorthStar?especially with its great Angie?s List rating. Not all of our expectations were met. Several items that need mentioning: We contracted to have NorthStar pack our entire kitchen. When we finally opened the boxes we were surprised to see that the crew had placed liquid items in with other kitchen items/food with no special protection. One large container of vanilla, for example, was upside down in the box containing boxed food items. Someone packed up two potatoes and garlic; this box was opened 1 week after our move. Secondly, the crew used an unusual and potentially dangerous method to get a wide sofa from the first to the second floor. Thankfully the piece and crew were uninjured. We can't say as much for one of our walls. Thirdly, Ilan Dehan, NorthStar?s project manager, promised that our mattresses would be boxed. They were not?they were wrapped. They were wrapped and taped so tightly that they were bent over. Remembering that we had a delay before the crew was able to move items from the 1st to 2nd floor, our mattresses were standing up and tightly bent over for over 12 hours. We believe that our master bedroom mattress set has been damaged and will need replacement.

The movers were amazing. They arrived early and worked incredibly hard the whole time. When they saw we weren't completely packed, they weren't bothered at all - they just told us they could pack us up the rest of the way and they got right on it. Not only did they move everything in perfect condition, but they helped detach our washer and dryer we were donating and took a door off it's hinges so that the people picking it up could get it out. They were professional, efficient, and extremely accommodating. All that, and they came in under the quoted price. Overall, the best moving experience we've ever had!

Moving - what a drag but had a great experience with Northstar David L. and his crew (Oscar C., Kenny J., Daniel P., and Wilbur / Vin Diesel) made my pack so easy for me. They are polite courteous and conscience of everything involved. Packed in one day my entire 3 bedroom townhouse - I was feeling a bit behind being ready for them but they assessed the situation with ease and started right in where they could and gave us space to organize the last few bits and pieces we needed also. Highly recommend this company from the visit for the estimate to the communication in the offices and the sales rep everything has been spot on and what you would expect when hiring a crew to pack and move. Thanks for the ease of this day. Day 2 of the move went as easily as day 1 also - David did another great job of leading his crew to efficiently pack the truck and move my entire place into storage Overall they did such a great job - every step everyone is very responsive and they came under their quote also. Will use again when I need to move my home out of storage into my new home.

It was good. They were really neat and really great. They came out to provide the service less than a month or within a month after I purchased the deal. There was an additional charge of less than $50 on top of the $50 deal because we asked for additional help. They moved our stuff seven miles away. They were on time, very careful, very clean and respectful of our stuff. I did not have any dislikes about them. They were really good.

It began well enough. We contacted NorthStar well ahead of the date we were going to start and they sent a gentleman out to assess the work and provide an estimate of the cost. That gentleman was quite professional and courteous. At this time he told us that the furniture, TV and other large items would be wrapped, stored, and then brought back and placed back where they were. We had some concern about items disassembled for the move and he reassured us that all items would be reassembled to their state and location before the move, at the least he assured us they would replace the two TVs in their original location, including in one storage unit with a lift-out feature. The crew showed up promptly at the appointed time on 6/20 to move items out. They seemed professional, wrapped and packaged the items to be moved and disassembled a number of them, likely to make them easier to store. This job was finished in a reasonable amount of time. Prior to moving items back to the house we were contacted to settle storage charges. I fully expected such charges, but what I did not expect is the degree of insistence and lack of communication that followed. They said they called to schedule a payment, but no message was left an any of the numbers we gave them for contact, and all those numbers have voice mail capability. When we tried to return the calls we left messages with the receptionist that were not answered by phone, but rather by e-mail. We are a bit concerned with the apparent lack of communications, which showed up again a few days later as we will outline below. Had the same crew showed up to return the items the remainder of this review would likely be considerably different. They showed up on 8/1 at the appointed time. Part of our remodel included new carpeting in the rooms where the furniture was to go. We specifically asked the crew to please unwrap the items outside so that dirt and debris would remain outside instead of on the carpet that was laid just the day before. In spite of this what we think was a reasonable request, the crew continued to bring items in still wrapped and we could not even tell into which room the items were to go because they were wrapped up. They proceeded to unwrap the items inside, getting our new carpeting much dirtier than should have happened. In addition, they had to move several items again since they were often initially placed in the wrong room. In spite of a schematic carefully drawn up by the first crew, this crew did not even attempt to put things where they were moved from until we had to insist, and many we ended up putting where they belonged after the crew left. They did not reassemble the items the first crew disassembled and in addition somewhere a number of the fasteners to do that job were lost. We were stuck with doing a job that the original gentleman promised would be covered in the job. In addition, a number of items were damaged and scratched in the process. This crew did not seem to be as engaged or willing to do the job professionally and as promised as was the crew that showed up on 6/20. We attempted to contact NorthStar to communicate these concerns. We left a message with the receptionist on the evening of 8/1/2014 and we followed this up with an e-mail asking that we be contacted by someone in authority to deal with these issues. We indicated in that e-mail that we would be posting a review on Angie's List on Wednesday 8/6 (today) and that we would love to talk to someone in authority before that. We have yet to hear back. Again, this seems to be a very unprofessional way to communicate with your customers. All in all this was not a pleasant experience, and one we would not want to repeat.
Description of Work: Based on high recommendations from Angie's List we engaged NorthStar for support in recent home remodel. We needed someone to move the furniture from first floor rooms, store during construction, and then move back when the rooms were ready. NorthStar moved items out 6/20/2014, stored them, and moved them back in 8/1/2014.

Everyone at NorthStar was very responsive and professional, pricing seemed fair, they arrived when the said they were, handled my property with respect, nothing was damaged in the move. One warning- I arranged a delivery date having no idea that the (very large) truck wouldn't be allowed to drive on freshly laid asphalt pavement done in my new complex the morning before the afternoon delivery. I was able to work it out with the complex manager, but if I hadn't the re-delivery fee would be $1200 dollars - almost half the cost of the total cross country move. Be forewarned!

If there are no other options for the truck, then a shuttle must be used to unload your belongings. We had a very complicated move; preparing for it took five exhausting, nerve-wracking months. However, the move itself went PERFECTLY. I can't emphasize enough how helpful, polite, productive, cooperative and professional the workers were on moving day, as well as the office personnel I was in contact with several times as I planned and finalized the arrangements. We cleared an old house, and renovated it from top to bottom, storing many of the contents. On moving day, we started where we were living at that time, and our destination was the ?new? house. We combined the two households, downsizing from 2000 square feet of living space and three packed garages to a total of 800 square feet and one garage. In addition to moving dozens of boxes, plus appliances and household items, we had to coordinate the integration and donation of furniture. I chose Northstar Moving based on their good reviews, and the very reasonable price they quoted. What sealed the deal for me was their offer to transport and donate items to the Chatsworth Habitat for Humanity Restore store. I knew we?d have to be very selective about what furniture we?d keep for the small house, and we?d have a lot of quality pieces available for donation. I had written out a plan of what furniture to move where, to be as efficient and organized as possible, and the movers worked with me step by step. We moved our household furniture to the destination, and then the shuffling began! Luckily the small house has a long driveway, which we used as a staging area. We had to move furniture out of the house, in and out of the garage, and into the house; all the while separating the 22 pieces of furniture from both sites to be reloaded on the truck for donation. Even as I made changes to the list ? ?no, that can go too? and ?no, I want to keep that? ? the movers were patient and helpful. They worked straight through, never lagging; and despite all the work to be done, we only went half an hour over the four hours planned. Not only would I say, ?there were no problems,? I would highly recommend Northstar Moving for your moving needs!

Northstar proved to be as good as their reviews. The guys showed up on time and were courteous, fast and efficient. They made very sure to explain to me at the outset that the "not to exceed price" that I was quoted in writing was just an estimate and that the cost could be more. That was ok with me as I had read the fine print and knew there may be issues that could arise but as long as they finished in the estimated time frame it should be at or under the estimate. II was pleasantly surprised at the end when the actual cost came in well below the estimate. I was sure they would come up with a way to make it at least meet the estimate but they added up all the time and materials and both came in below the expected. It may have helped that I unloaded some boxes and also unwrapped many of the bigger items to speed up the overall process. I would definitely recommend and use them again.

The move went well. The moving men were professional, very careful and efficient. They were fast as well; in other words, they did not waste any time getting the job done. The men were organized and worked well as a team. Also, we had purchased a discount coupon for the move on Angie's list, and it was accepted without any problems or unexpected conditions.
Description of Work: The three moving men removed furniture and boxes from a 2 bedroom apartment and, after packing these items into their moving van, unloaded them into a space at a storage facility a few blocks away.

They arrived early, reviewed the entire move and estimate prior to beginning. Performed all aspects of the move professionally, i.e. prepared the rooms, doorways, etc to preclude any damage, properly protected each piece of furniture and carefully disassembling any items. My experience with NorthStar moving company was a horrible nightmare!!! In the beginning NorthStar quoted a super low price of 3 professional movers and 1 truck for $115.00 per hour plus double drive time by law in California, to move my few things from a one bedroom apartment to a one bedroom condo about 15 minutes away. I told them I would have elevators reserved until 5:00 pm. I also warned them that the new place was located on a steep hill so they had to tie everything securely in order to get up the hill safely. They did not feel it was necessary to come check my belongings or the route beforehand. A few days before, I was informed they would be there between 12:00pm and 6:00pm. (Note that I told them I had elevators reserved until 5:00pm.! This was the latest I could be moving my things at both locations due to HOA regulations.) The day of the move no one showed or called by 12:45pm so I started calling to remind them they needed to be at the special packing location early and asked where they were and what their schedule was. Their response was, they would check and get back to me. After repeated calls I was told they would be there, ?after they finished their lunch!? Finally, at 3:00pm they showed up in a huge truck to start packing my few things. When all was packed and loaded it was already 4:40pm. Upon reaching the new place they said their truck could not make it up the steep hill so they would have to send in a shuttle to get our things in. First, we refused to pay for the shuttle since they had been warned ahead of time and it was already too late to move into the building since it was already 6:30pm by then. We were then told we would have to pay to store our things overnight in their yard. (This scam had been pulled on us by other movers in the past.) We refused to pay for this too because they had been warned. They then returned to their yard with my things in their truck. (Who knows how many people would be going through our things or removing some of our equipment? Also, my helpers had to drive for over an hour to get home and almost another hour to return the next day to help.) In addition, I already had been required by the city to get a special parking permit for the truck for that one day until 5:00pm because the truck would have to park in a red zone at the destination. Northstar had also been warned about this limit. The next morning I had to renegotiate with the city to get another pass at $20 a pop since it had been too late to cancel the previous day?s pass. At first they weren?t even going to issue another pass because we hadn?t informed them sufficiently in advance. The next morning Northstar started calling repeatedly regarding how the move was to be made. First, they were just going to send back the old truck. When we reminded them that they had told us their truck ?couldn?t make it up the hill?, they said they would park at the bottom of the hill and use their shuttle. When we told them there was no other place to park they said ?no trucks, even their smaller ones, could make it up the hill. We informed them that we had already witnessed several moving vans that had made it up the hill to park in that reserved space with no problem. We were then told they would transfer our things to a smaller truck and be there in the afternoon. A bit later another person called to tell us the original truck would be coming with our things and be there at one o?clock.??! Another person told us the smaller truck was coming but they would have to be using their shuttle?? During this entire process we had spoken with four different people even though one said he would be handling everything. Their customer service rep kept trying to placate us by giving us information about the move but much of it contradicted what the others were saying. She also said we would have to pay more for the extra day, storage, and time to which we refused. The bill was already three times their original quote. Because of this and all that had gone on we gave Northstar an F on Angie?s list. Finally, Northstar?s small truck arrived that next afternoon, made it up the hill, parked in the special zone and moved our things in in less than two hours. The actual time spent on our move was: Loading 1 hour 30 minutes Drive time doubled 45 minutes Move in 2 hours Total time 3 hrs. 45 min or 4 hours The materials used to move were charged to us in addition. This was part of the contract. The final bill totaled $1149.00! According to their contract, that would account for 10 hour?s work. The materials used were worth far less than 6 hours work. When we contested the bill, they balked. Their customer service representative called four separate times to get us to reduce our F grade to an A! We said we would be lying to give them any better than a C and doing anything else would not be fair to future customers. When we refused to give them the A they even tried to bribe us by telling us they would pay us back $400 if we would give them the A?and nothing lower. We refused the bribe to expose the truth and they refused to lower the bill. When it came to moving, Northstar played every scam in the book to get more money out of us while making the moving process a pure nightmare. They made an easy one bedroom move locally only 15 minutes away a complete fiasco and drove the bill up with all sorts of additional charges. Dear Angie’s List Member, It is obvious that you are very upset, but unfortunately, this level of anger is exactly the reason we were not able to come to a good resolution with you when we spoke immediately following your move. The “warnings” you close your review with tell the story of how difficult it was to find a resolution in your case despite my best efforts. You cannot fix a situation for someone who is determined to just be angry at all costs. We are not interested in “bribing” people, as you say, or in scamming them. What we are interested in doing, when we are at fault in some way, is finding a resolution that will make our clients happy. When I talk to you on the phone, if I can’t make you happy, then I consider it a failure on my part. The hours I spent with you on the phone trying to find a way to make things right were a failure because nothing I said made you feel better, no apology I made was accepted and you were determined to hate us no matter what. The simple facts are, something unexpected happened the day of your move and after all was said and done, when all the facts were gathered, we realized that we could have done something better and I tried to find a resolution that would make you happy. This is not the definition of a scam. You made it clear that nothing we did would make you happy and so I had no choice but to accept that I would not be able to make things right for you. You were not interested in a resolution, you were interested in being unhappy and telling as many people about it as possible. That is your prerogative and if it is the way you want to live your life, there is nothing I can do about it. For our part, however, I too can tell the truth. Several things went wrong with your son’s move before we got there. The HOA at the complex kept switching times on him, causing him to reschedule with us. They were making the entire situation more difficult than it needed to be, which no doubt added to your stress level before we even arrived on the scene. When we arrived and loaded his belongings, some things required packing prior to loading. We then drove to the new location to unload, but the hill was too steep for our truck to make it up. We later learned that this was not the case, and that our truck had a mechanical issue that day. This mechanical issue contributed to some, but not all, of the time that took place on the first day of your move. Due to this issue, your son’s belongings had to be kept in our storage for the night so that we could arrange delivery the following day. You were charged a fee for storage because your belongings had to be stored overnight. When we realized the storage fee was the result of an issue with our truck, we waived it and also lowered your bill even more before we had even completed the move in an attempt to be fair. We do NOT have hidden fees or charges. We go out of our way to make everything as transparent as possible. This is something we do because it is a fair practice for our clients, but most importantly, because it is simply the right thing to do. I NEVER asked you to alter your review, or withheld money because you wouldn’t. I am very sorry if that is what you took away from our conversation. What I explained to you was that my goal was to change your mind about our company, to get you to the place where you would use us again. Due to your feelings about the company and your state of mine, you said there was nothing I could ever do that would make you use us again or make you happy about your experience with our company. It seems to me that all you wanted is to hate our company at all costs. That is why I feel I failed you in this situation and why we were unable to come to a resolution. You didn't want it to be better. You wanted to be mad and that, too, is your prerogative. I regret that everything we tried to do for you was not enough to make things better. NorthStar moving Co. is the greatest! Ask for Jacinto if you want a careful, thorough move with thoughtful consideration on how to wrap/pack your most loved and delicate valuables. I am a totally hands on person and after just a short time I was able to comfortably turn over the reins to Jacinto.
Description of Work: NorthStar moved the contents of my 2 bedroom, 2 bath condo (which has 2 flights of stairs) from my residence of 13 years to a nearby storage facility while I am awaiting a new permanent destination.

We contacted Northstar in May and scheduled a move for 3rd week in June. We were moving from Seattle to San Clemente. Julie in the office got back to us and sent us email the required forms to sign. They gave us a 3 day arrival window about a week before and arrived on the first day of the 3 day window. They called at 8pm the night before and said they would be there at between 12-3pm. They arrived at 6pm and left at 11:30pm. We got calls periodically letting us know where the furniture was. It did take 2 weeks to finally arrive at the storage facility in Aliso Viejo. The driver and his assistant were great. Worked very hard. The furniture had been tagged by us to show what pieces and boxes would go to the apartment and what stayed at the storage. They had all the apartment tagged pieces organized to be unloaded at the end. They had to rent a smaller truck to use to get into the apartment complex with the tagged items. It went smoothly. We were impressed by the professionalism by all concerned and would definitely use Northstar again. We pick this company because of the glowing reviews. And we can say that the reviews were right on. Thank you Northstar for making a very stressful move much more manageable.
Description of Work: They moved us from Seattle to San Clemente. We had to have them meet us at a storage facility to unload part of the load and then rent a small moving truck to bring the remaining furniture to an apartment in San Clemente. They arrived in Seattle and did a great job wrapping the furniture to protect it. The movers were great. It took 6 hours to load the truck and they never slowed down. Very hard workers. The driver who arrived with furniture and his helper were great too.
