Winston is an artist with stain. He stained newly built cabinet faces and doors to match furniture and stained the interior of the cabinets (constructed of a different material to match). The work was excellent and cleanup was immaculate.

We noticed our cabinets were looking pretty beat up and wanted to restore them. We had a few estimates, including a quote that required refinishing the entire kitchen at thousands of dollars. Mr. Kirby gave us an estimate, recommended a place to match our stain, and then returned to do the job. He was very thorough and did an excellent job at a fraction of the cost. He was only here 1.5 hours! He also gave us tips on how to maintain the cabinets so we're not doing this again in a year or two. He was fast and efficient. I would definitely recommend him and will use him when we completely refinish our bathroom cabinets later this year!

They did really good work. They were prompt, set expectations and met those expectations. When little things came up that were not expected in the original scope of work, they handle them without added delay or expense. Overall I was very pleased and would hire Kirby Painting again, without reservation.
Description of Work: Due to a roof leak we had water damage to ceiling, walls and the exterior patio. All of the sheetrock, painting, texture (including matching) and minor wood working were part of the job.

Thank you so much for your positive report. I would like to comment respectively on the 50% down payment. If I could get around that I would, but I'm a small business with a large customer volume and at times i have two to three jobs going at a time . I cannot afford the cost of materials on all of them and before these jobs are done I have other paint on order for the upcoming jobs. between this and maintaining payroll the half down is a necessary need in order to keep the work rolling forward. I am aware that some people may have a lack of trust in giving a down payment but 80% of any business transactions rather you are buying a car or a home or anything else requires a down payment of some type and I have no problem in trusting a customer for the remaining half so in reality it's really a good balanced system that works for both parties. Thank you so much, Kirby Painting

Winston Kirby and his team were extremely responsive, prompt, and professional. Very easy to work with. He also made some great suggestions on how to repair and cosmetically enhance places where we had some wallpaper peeling. We were extremely satisfied and recommend him highly.

Kirby was able to come out right away and give an estimate. I agreed and he came out a couple of weeks later to do the work. He even called and asked if he could come a few days early since it was supposed to rain on the day I was scheduled and he didn't want me to have to wait. Everything took about 6 hours to complete and when he was done the house looks brand new. The damage he repaired looks great and the paint color matches perfectly. Overall I am very pleased with the work and will use his services again.

Mr. Kirby offered excellent advice during his initial visit. He was the only contractor to do so -- he "took a chance", I felt, rather than merely going along with some of my choices. I respect that and it's why I hire professionals -- I hope they will occasionally point out flaws in my thinking and offer constructive criticism. His crew was a pleasure to have in my home -- they worked well together, checking one another's work as they progressed. They were responsive to me and very polite and professional. The work began and was completed on schedule and every square inch of it is perfect.

Mr. Kirby is a very nice and professional man. He came to talk to us about the job we had and I went over my desires in detail. We had a cabinet maker build some extra cabinets for our kitchen in a house that we had just purchased. We needed those painted and I wanted some bathroom cabinets painted that had been not been painted well by the previous home owner. He gave us the option of spraying the cabinets or having them hand painted (for a lower cost). He talked, in some detail, about handpainting and he told me that he could do a really good job handpainting the cabinets. He said they wouldn't be as perfect as spraying but that they would be very close. We talked about the brushes he used, etc. We decided to go with that option. He came early one morning and got his guys going. I checked on their progress at noon and called him about work that was being done in the bathroom that was different from what we decided on. We had talked in detail about the blemishes on those cabinets that I wanted to be fixed and his guys had done no prep work or sanding on those spots and had just painted right over them. He asked his guys to fix those spots and they got to work on it to rectify the problem. By the time I got home in the afternoon and had a chance to look over the kitchen cabinets, I could see that the job was a mess. The primer that was applied to the new cabinets was rough and messy and the painting was rough. There were numerous areas of extended drips in the kitchen and the bathroom. These were brand new beautiful cabinets in the kitchen and I was really unhappy. Mr. Kirby said he would get everything the way we wanted it and that things would be sanded down and repainted the next day. He said he would repaint the bathroom cabinets himself. He did come the next day and, I guess, to the best of his ability, try to do this. The kitchen looks pretty good but the bad primer coat that his guys did still shows through. The bathroom cabinet is a mess because it was not sanded down as we talked about and still has the drips that his guys caused originally. I wish I had never done anything to these cabinets because even though they had some blemishes they were so much better before. I was going to let Mr. Kirby know about it (after I saw them in the sunlight) yesterday but my husband and I decided to just let it be. We will just make the repairs ourselves. Mr. Kirby is a nice guy but we apparently didn't communicate well. I am particular but I stated my desires in our first meeting. I hate to leave negative feedback and I have resisted doing it until I saw the bathroom yesterday. That is what Angie's List is about so I decided to go ahead and post a review.

The new cabinet doors were fine the first time and approved by her husband. When I came to settle up ,she was looking at the cabinets with a flashlight and complained about everything even the color, which she picked. I ate about $600 on this job trying to please someone who can't be pleased. We re-sanded the door, re-primed and this time we sprayed the doors which is an option they had the first time around. We also re-did the bathroom cabinets which had about (40) years of nicks and damage and they looked great. You would have to re-build them to look any better than we made them look. My crew pointed out the doors and door casing and the rest of the trim in the house. If they can live with the horrible paint job, that's on them. I have no idea how they can complain about us. Once again, the job was approved by the husband with many compliments this time and why not?? They just got $600 of free labor and materials. This is the second time I have had a member tell me about painters they had right before calling us and all the problems they had with other painters. In the future, if a member has had problems with several other painters or you have to look over the work with a magnify glass and a flashlight....please call someone else. Thanks, Winston

Winston Kirby is a man of his word. He takes a lot of pride in his work and it shows. His staff is friendly and professional and he is more than fair on his pricing. They do all of their painting by hand, no sprayers here! And they are perfectionists. Winston even called his staff back out to our home on a Saturday to touch up a room because it was not up to his high standards. Our home looks gorgeous-- inside and out! Kirby Painting will be our painters for life.

Great crew and showed up on time, every day. Winston Kirby couldn't have been more helpful and professional. All of his workers did a great job, were speedy, cleaned up their areas, and tried their best to work around our family and dogs. The paint job looks wonderful inside and out. It is almost like we have a brand new house.
Description of Work: Exterior painting of house (lots of siding on our two-story house) and interior kitchen cabinets were painted as well. We decided to change paint colors mid-way through exterior painting so about $800 of the total bill was for replacement paint and labor due to our own mistake. Also they replaced some rotten siding before painting as well.

Mr. Kirby and his crew are true professionals and their prices are very fair. They arrived as scheduled and made several trips to allow adequate time for their work to dry before the next step was completed. My front door was so damaged that I really did not think it could be repaired but it now looks new; Mr. Kirby is an absolute magician when it comes to wood restoration work. I appreciated their flexibility in scheduling their work as some of it had to be coordinated with the installation of a new master closet organization system. Overall, I would rate their work as an A+ and I plan to use them in the future to paint the outside of my home. I feel truly blessed to have been able to have worked with this company; it was a hassle-free, high quality experience.
Description of Work: Painted master bedroom closet; power-washed, stained and sealed wood deck; power-washed concrete sidewalk and caulked sidewalk and limestone cracks. Overall I thought I was pleased UNTIL I noticed all the spots left after the painters left. Despite discussing the importance of drop cloths and being assured they would use drop cloths and be careful, I was left with a LOT of paint spots, on floors, furniture, cabinetry, personal items, etc. I am particularly annoyed with all the drops left on my furniture that are very hard to get rid of without risking damage to the wood. It appears the painters were in a hurry and did not use the drop cloths that were left for them to use. I even found some unopened cloths that had been provided for this paint job.
Description of Work: I am not providing the expenditure information because I do not think it is relevant for comparisons since jobs differ in the size and complexity of the area painted. Kirby painted the inside of my house, using my paint selections

I am shocked --i can"t believe this report!! When i first met the member, the first thing she said to me was all the problems they have had with contractors. She said it had been a nightmare...so this made me aware of past problems they claim to have had so i was extremely careful for them. The house did not look like it was done by professionals-- paint was everywhere and the house was filthy. Before I started this job, my crew and i pointed out all the paint spots on the floor, furniture and window frames. She said she was aware of it and halfway thru the job-i walked the member thru the work performed --she could not say enough good comments about the work and was very happy. i provided several extras that they were not billed for when the job was completed, and a day ahead of scheduled at that! I walked the member through the house again and she walked it again on her own--she wrote out my check and the whole time was praising my crew and i. The husband was out of town through the whole job. He came home one time according to her and he had no complaints but i never met the man. But he seems to have a lot to say. He never called me to tell me about this or to ask me to come look at what they were concerned about which would have been no problem and i would have been glad to. I have left messages for them to let me come see what they're concerned about, but no return call. I really do have to wonder if there were ever any other contractors and if so were they really the problem ?? or the members ???

We had a lot of sheetrock damage from construction and Winston's guys did better patches than the sheetrock companies. You couldn't even see the patches after they were done. They are just so pleasant, courteous, clean, have a lot of pride in their work and show up when they say they will. They work hard and full days. That's a huge deal in the construction industry. Their pricing is very fair for the quality of work and lack of hassle. You can find cheap painters, but you'll pay some other way. Hire Winston Kirbey and his guys. They're great.
Description of Work: Winston and his crew painted every square inch of our house inside and out. They were the best painters I've had by far. As a designer I have been involved in remodeling and building numerous homes and Winston is the best I've encountered. I would recommend him to anyone.

Kirby Painting was efficient and very capable. Their bid was not the low bid, but I think the value add that I got from Kirby Painting was worth the higher cost. Before the first bit of stain was applied to my house, Kirby Painting made sure I was going to know as much as possible, what my house was going to look like when they finished. They discussed the stain on my neighbors homes, they put samples of the stains we were considering on some of the siding that was removed so I could see what the stains looked like. They labored over the color choice as much as I did. They suggested painting the garage and exterior doors which I had not planned to do. The power washing was done thoroughly and not rushed through. The gutters and cedar that was removed from the house were not carted off immediately, but this had not been discussed and was not an important issue with me (I mention this only because I have seen this work discussed in many reviews. I'm sure Kirby Painting would have done this if I had requested.) Winston Kirby e-mailed me to keep me informed as to what was going to be done when, he was not present while the power washing was done, at least not while I was there, but he was there when the staining was done and was very 'hands on' during this part of the job. There was one thing that was not taken care of, we were going to take care of an external electric cord and the cable TV wires but this was a minor item and does not detract from the rest of the work. I did not discuss this with Kirby Painting and I'm sure they would have come back and taken care of this. The completed work looks pretty good, the clean-up was good, and one small problem with the painting of the garage door was corrected. I'm pretty happy about the results and I'm usually not happy after I have spent money.
Description of Work: Kirby Painting stained the cedar siding the exterior of my 2500+sq. ft. , 35 year old home. The work included removing the gutters and the cedar that boxed them in and hauling off this material, power washing the house, repairing numerous knot holes in the siding, and replacing some rooted pieces of siding. The original siding on the home had never been sealed/stained/painted. It was simply allowed to weather.

We contacted Winston Kirby (owner) to give us a proposal on painting our seven-year old home. The original paint job was the typical builder low budget prep and paint job. After interviewing Kirby Painting Services we also contacted two other painting companies with a high rating from Angie's List. After several weeks we decided to have Winston Kirby perform the work. Winston lowered the price a fair amount due to a friend who assisted in replacing some rotted fascia boards. Besides the fact of the high ranking and many positive reports on Angie's List, we decided on Winston mainly because he was the ONLY company who told us up front that he would use only brushes and rollers on our home. The other companies wanted to use a sprayer and when pressed for an estimate to hand-paint our home the cost increased considerably (as hand-painting should because of the labor intensiveness of it). Winston came by to look over the house again just to make sure he was up-to-date on what we wanted since it had been several weeks past his first visit. Winston suggested the type of paint to use and we could not be happier with the recommendation. He went as far as to have it mixed at the same store where we had bought a gallon the previous week. Winston's crew, James, Luis & Juan, arrived on time each day and were very conscientious. We cannot say enough positive things about them or their work. All trash (if there was any since we never saw any) was picked up. We're talking not even a caulk tube tip was to be found. No drips, no runs, no missed areas period. Winston came by the third day to make sure EVERYTHING was up to his standards. They even re-hung our gutter piece at no additional charge! The last day was a half-day and the "super" crew completed the work and were gone before noon. Again, a most excellent job!
Description of Work: Caulking and painting single story exterior with several large dormers and very steep roof pitch. Caulk and seal all roof hips and other areas where wasps and spiders could potentially build a nest. Paint all roof "jacks". We provided the paint for the roof "jacks" and some of the caulk.

From the onset of calling Mr. Kirby he was professional, polite, and always willing to respond to any questions. He and his crew were punctual and a delight to work with. Overall I felt as if Winston's crew did a good job and I was charged fairly as well. We had a couple of mishaps initially (he rescheduled last minute on a couple of meetings). Given that I had read a couple of notes regarding professionalism, I wasn't too surprised. I was a little taken back tonight though. Evidently our initial review did not post online for some reason. I just received the following e-mail from Winston (one month after the job was done) "As of the 1st-your warranty on all your work has expired do to failure to do your report on angie's list as stated on your contract. I'm going to e-mail angie's list giving you till the 10th of January to do your report. After the 10th your warranty will be permanently voided." VERBATIM AND UNSOLICITED. Draw your own conclusions!

I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHAT A WARRANTY REMINDER FROM SOMEONE IN MY OFFICE HAS TO DO WITH MY PROFESSIONALISM BUT I GUESS IT'S LIKE THIS: MY DAD WAS A PAINTING CONTRACTOR FOR 60 YEARS. HE ONCE TOLD ME, “IN OUR FIELD, NO MATTER HOW HARD YOU TRY, YOU WON'T BE ABLE TO PLEASE EVERYONE BECAUSE YOU WILL ALWAYS RUN INTO THE FEW WHO CAN'T BE PLEASED.” I SUSPECT IT'S THAT WAY IN ALL FIELDS, BUT I ALSO FIND IT'S VERY TRUE.

They responded quickly to our request for a price quote and even came out on a Saturday to do the estimate. Work was completed within a week of the estimate. On the day of the scheduled work, they called to let us know the painter was running a bit late(which was great to know). The painter was very professional, worked quickly and did a great job! We were very pleased with the work and would definite use Kirby Painting again.
Description of Work: We hired Kirby Painting to handle the painting of a stair well and hallway in our house.

Got Winston Kirby's name off of Angie's List in July. I asked Winston to come back in the Fall because the middle of summer is not a great time to paint outside. He finished in Oct 08...kept me apprised of his timeline...punctual, reliable. Great experience.
Description of Work: Painted the exterior of my one story home that has 6 over 6 double hung windows. Very labor intensive.

Immediately after I let Winston know we had chosen him for the job he kept in touch with both my sister and I by phone and e-mail concerning scheduling possibilities, our start date, and paint selections, about which he offered welcome advise. We then met at a time and place convenient for me to take care of the deposit transaction. He and James arrived promptly on the scheduled date and went to work, and what great work it was! I hope my report will do the guys justice! The peeled, layered wall paper debacle and the horrific, extremely thick paint job on three of the walls in the bath were the biggest challenges. However the removal, sanding, and orange peel texture in the room was done so expertly you absolutely can't tell there were ever any problems! The popcorn ceilings were scraped and painted twice, resulting in a finish that appears as smooth as glass and provides a very appealing contrast to the textured walls in both rooms. While the guys were here they did a litany of other things not originally discussed, and at no additional cost...some small cosmetic things that made a huge difference in the overall impact of the finished job included painting closet shelves, fixing holes in the closet drywall, staining trim under cabinets to match the flooring, applying polyurethane to cabinet fronts to make them stand out, and painting the metal ac/heat vents. In my line of work I am in and out of client's homes constantly and have seen poor work done by numerous contractors, at all stages of a job. In contrast I am pleased to say the job Winston, James, and Chris did was exemplary! They were professional, yet personable and easy to talk to, and in fact they were excited about the job and happy to share and explain the process with me along the way. They were conscientious and careful with our belongings, extremely neat, no paint out of place, and all furniture and fixtures were well covered. They cleaned up daily and actually finished the job a day earlier than projected even after Winston had to take a day off due to illness. My sister and I couldn't be happier with the exceptional job, from start to finish. We will definitely hire Winston for future work, and will not hesitate to recommend him highly to others.
Description of Work: Winston was commissioned to paint the master bedroom and bath including new trim, molding and baseboards, scrape the popcorn ceilings of each room and paint both ceilings. The bathroom job required dealing with an extremely thick unfinished paint job and at least two layers of wallpaper that had been torn loose from the walls in many areas, taking part of the drywall off with it, which looked to be a complete nightmare to tackle!
