Description of Work: I've used Beardsley twice: both times with the same result - buying a new major appliance. He charges $75 (plus tax) for each estimate, and in both cases, found something that resulted in his stating I needed a new appliance. The date given above is incorrect, but date's a required field for this report. First, it was a refrigerator in an old duplex I owned. It was less than a year old but had been left without electricity and with the door closed for several weeks. He said roaches had gotten in the motor and it would be impossible to clean, might even have some electrical problem. Next, it was a clothes washing machine (the front-loading, expensive kind.) With this, he found a small screw that had caused damage to the large, rubbery sealing gasket around the door, which had nothing to do with the problem I'd called about. The replacement of this was quite expensive (I forget how much since I had immediately decided it was too much, especially coupled with the cost of repairing what I'd called him for, for me to invest on a four-year-old machine,) so I asked him just to fix the part I'd called him about, which had to do with replacing a broken water hose inside the machine which had broken in the hard freeze we had. He said he wouldn't because if I didn't replace the gasket, water might get into the motor and cause a shock. Then he recommended I buy from the same place he'd recommended for a new fridge the last time. He collected his money for the estimate, and left. Things started to bother me later when I reviewed what had occurred. First, Beardsley is a huge man. He has a giant girth. In other words, he's grossly fat. His breathing is even labored. My laundry room is tiny, with little room to move around in. When I thought back to the fridge I'd called him about, I realized he'd have to work in a small area, too. In both cases, he made it sound like there was no hope, other than pay a small fortune, for repairing the appliances. However, I don't trust him. Why was he fooling around the washing machine seal? It wasn't by the pipe where water had been spewing out. With the fridge, why would there be a roach problem now, when there hadn't been one before - especially considering there was nothing there for them to eat? Then it struck me. He'd gotten over $150 from me without having to do much more than look around for a problem. Why should he bother to fix anything when he charges so much for an estimate? The estimate doesn't seem so much when you think it'll be applied to the repair job you expect he'll do, but for doing next to nothing, it does. And why would he have to get down, squeeze his bulk into a tiny space or fiddle around near the floor for a period of time when he can make $75 plus just for showing up and concocting a scenario? Why have I waited so long to report this? Well, I'm pretty easy-going, but this has sizzled somewhere on the back-burners 'til it's gotten good and hot (I've been fooled twice! Shame on.... ) so when this request from Angie's List came up again for a report, I decided to take the time. Sorry I didn't do so sooner.
