The Decker Electric Team is amazing! They were very professional and prompt. They showed up on time and got to work. From the very beginning it was clear to see that they are master electricians. They were extremely knowledgeable and very resourceful with our projects. I felt completely safe with them in our home and even had to leave earlier than anticipated for a meeting that I had to attend and they locked up the house and I felt very comfortable with them alone in my home. Reid, Richard and Kip all took great pride in their work and they went above and beyond to complete our work perfectly. They were also very fast. I can't believe how much they were able to accomplish in just a few short hours. It was very impressive. I highly recommend them and will most certainly be using them again in the future. You will not be disappointed in their work and will be very glad that you entrusted the care of your electrical needs to this skilled team.

Reid met with me a day after my call for bids. We went over the scope of work to be done and agreed on a cost-plus basis for the work. I accepted Reid's bid after receiving only one other response to my calls and work was scheduled within two weeks. John and Kip managed to get through some very tight spots in crawl space attic and got the job done within a week in 100+ degree heat. Reid arranged to meet with city inspector and passed rough-in on first inspection. Modified several breakers in addn to rewiring to meet city codes and assure safety. Final work was delayed twice by drywall contractor, but I was able to arrange reschedule within a week of my last call. Hung fixtures, completed breaker rewiring, and even added a few odd jobs for Unit B duplex. Found a problem with one receptacle and Reid arranged for his crew to fix it w/o addnl charge. Total bill was very close to original estimate for the whole project and within expectation based on work performed on the B unit.
Description of Work: Rewired a very old duplex unit in South Austin.

I called Decker Electric about a rental property of mine after searching for electricians on Angies List. My tenant said the power had gone off and one of the breakers in the box was buzzing and/or sparking. Reid Holm was responsive when I called, and quickly went to the house to check on it, the same day in fact. He told me that the entire service needed to be replaced. It's an older house and so that didn't seem too far-fetched to me. I asked him how much it would cost, and he told me $1,200. Interestingly, I had gotten an email from Angies List the day before with a deal for 200-amp service replacement for $1,343.00 from Efficient Air Conditioning. So, $1,200 being less than $1,343, I thought that what he was quoting me was a fair price and told him to go ahead and do it. He took care of scheduling it with the city and replaced it as promised on the scheduled day. This is where the problem started. He called me and said it was finished, and I gave him my credit card number to pay for it. Later that day I got an email receipt for the invoice for $2,300, almost double the $1,200 he had quoted me. I contacted him and he said he never told me it would be $1,200, he said he had told me it would be around $2,000. I, of course, think this is ridiculous. When I first found him on Angies list I printed out the info page, and when he told me $1,200, I had written it down on the paper, and also told my wife this was going to cost us $1,200. It makes no sense that I would agree to a $2,000 job when I had just gotten a coupon for $1,343. Of course he disagrees, and swears that he never said $1,200. I have no real recourse, because if I stop the credit card payment he will just put a mechanics lien on the property. I have to take a good bit of the blame since I was dumb enough to actually trust a contractor, and never asked for a proposal in writing. As I wrote above, he was responsive and punctual, and at least as competent as any electrician should be. But I feel like he took advantage when I didn't ask for a written bid and just went ahead and did the work and overcharged me, knowing that I wouldn't have any choice but to pay him. So, if you want to give him a try, I HIGHLY recommend you make sure you get a bid in writing first, and make sure that when you are paying him the invoice matches the bid.

I told [member name removed] that it would cost at least $2000.00 to do the work that was required. I explained to him that the breaker panel had to be replaced and that the sub panel attached to it also had to be removed and its wiring combined with the main panel. He asked I do the work ASAP.

Cost: $4334, a 32% increase over proposal of $3250-a hike we never discussed Price: F I accepted Decker Electric?s 9/17/13 proposal to replace the two breaker boxes with ?two new breaker panels with 100 amp main breakers? for $3250 on 9/29/13. At the end of this one-day job, done on 10/22/13, Reid Holm, owner of Decker Electric, gave me a bill for $4334. His explanation: He installed 125 amp main breakers, and I caused work delays. My response: When I got another proposal for the job specifying, ?two new (GE) 200 amp breaker boxes installed? I'd asked Holm, twice I think, about more amps. Each time, all he said was, ?I think 100 amps will work.? He never mentioned increased costs, or anything about 100 vs. 200 amps or why-why not to increase amps. I learned he installed 125 amps when I got his $4334 bill-an increase made without my prior knowledge or approval. Quality: F Only 10 breakers of 18 breakers in Box A and 2 of 19 breakers in Box B were labeled?couldn't tell what did what. The large piece of wall cut out was bolted back but looks awful. Responsiveness: D I called or emailed Holm 3-4 times between 9/29/13 and 10/22/13. Phone calls/emails either weren?t answered at all or took days to get a response. Punctuality: D Holm said he?d start at 8:00am on 10/22/13 and end about 2:00 pm. He arrived about 8:35 am, after the city inspectors arrived. I ran an errand soon after he got here, returned about 9:30 am. He and his crew were working; they asked to come inside to cut a hole in the wall near outside breaker boxes. Part of the 32% increase in cost, Holm said, was because ?I?d delayed? his start time. I disagree. Professionalism F: Hiking the proposal sum from $3250 to $4334 without my prior knowledge or approval was, in my opinion, unprofessional and unfair. Holm blamed me for the increase, and I disagreed but paid him. I gave him my $25 Angie?s List coupon; he changed his bill to $4300. I paid $3250 by credit card per our earlier agreement. But not enough funds in a/c to pay the unexpected $1050, so paid that by check, made payable to Reid Holm, not Decker Electric, as he requested.

Response from Decker Electric
After the work was completed and I presented [Member name removed] with the bill she replied that is was still less than the other bids. She had expressed concern about the service amperage from the beginning, so I made it larger. When I started my company I always thought if I treated people fairly and did good work the reviews would be positive and my business would grow. My experience with [Member name removed] has proved to be the expectation. We agreed to replace her electrical breaker boxes with a 200 amp service, !00 amps feeding each unit. I spoke with her at least four times before we did the work. Every time we talked she expressed concern that the size of the service was too small. I explained that it was more than adequate and allowed for circuit expansion. We met on site the day before the work was to be performed. I wanted to see if the utility company had left any special instructions, they did not. I also explained again the procedure, how long it would take and to remind her that we needed to get inside the house to complete the work. Again she asked about the service size, I told her it was fine, her reply, "well you just do what you think is best." As I left I said to my apprentice, "she really seems concerned about the service size, I can't seem to make her understand, let's make it a 250 amp service. For her peace of mind it will be worth it." When the utility company arrived the next day they informed me that they wanted the service to be built differently than I anticipated, (the crew disconnecting power always has final say on the rebuild even though it may differ from the first instructions). I went to the door to inform [Member name removed], she was gone and the house was locked. (I had met with her in the morning to remind her that we needed to get into the house to perform the work). I tried calling, no answer. We kept busy while she was gone but being unable to get into the house significantly impacted the job. Increasing the service size and building it to the utility company's unexpected requirements increased the cost of the job. I explained this to [Member name removed] when I presented her with the bill. She replied, " well it is still cheaper than the other bids." We were locked out of the other half of the duplex so we were only able to label half of the circuits. When we returned the next morning she was very upset. I went over the bill one more time. I explained the pricing, I showed that I did not charge for the days work for one apprentice, a savings of $400.00 for her. I offered to show the cost of the material so she could better understand the bill, she declined. I reminded her that I was arranging to have the closet wall repaired at no cost to her. She replied, " it's okay I can't see it any way." Earlier she had expressed concern about her aluminum wiring, I offered her two hours free for an inspection and repairs, she declined. The electrical service that we built was larger in amperage size and required more material to meet the utility's company requirements. That is the reason for the price increase.

They did a really good job. They sent a guy that was fairly new, but did a great job. He took his time and made sure everything was done correctly the first time. We bought an older house and the electrical system needed to be brought up to code. This was a big job so we took our time getting estimates from a few electricians. Decker's quote was right in line with the others but the professionalism of Reid definitely set them apart. He and his crew did an amazing job and really took the time to explain everything to me before they left. The work came out great and everything was done as promised. We're having them back to do some additional work when we remodel the inside. They'll be moving outlets inside the house and installing new outlets outside.

I called several people at the last possible second. We were having a baby any day and at the last sec my wife wanted me to put a ceiling fan in the baby's room. I started on the project and promptly screwed it up and got bogged down. Decker said they could come out immediately and they did the next day. I expected a rush charge but didn't get one. Told them that I was under the gun as baby was due any time. 2 guys came out and were finished in one hour and everything worked great. Only issue was that of course some insulation fell out of the hole in the ceiling and onto the floor of the new babys room (which was to be expected). Then I came in and saw that they guys had stepped on some of it grinding it into the carpet. It seemed to come up ok when vacuuming. Normally I wouldn't care about this but being in protective new parent mode I thought this could have been avoided. Other than that these guys were great and I would recommend them to anyone. I even forgot to use my AL coupon and it still seemed inexpensive for a next day appt.

I want to start by saying that I did not hire Decker to do the work on our home, but this is because we did not have the work done altogether. We wanted to install flood lights in our yard since we only have one exterior light. We wanted control over having continuous light so we sought quotes for having lights wired into a switch in our hoouse. That being said, we also had a budget for what we wanted to spend on this. Decker gave a very fair quote since i received comparable quotes from other companies. Though fair in price, it was more than we wanted to spend and we went with a different plan for our exterior lighting. They were very professional in scheduling and arrival. I would definitely consider them in the future. They got great ratings on Angies, which is why I called them in the first place. I can't speak to the quality of their work, but I can vouch for their responsiveness.

My AC went out with the temperature well over 90. The AC repairman (Strand Bros.) came but needed parts to be delivered. These were installed the next morning and the unit still would not run so he told me the circuit breakers were next. I pulled the cover from our main panel and found the circuit breaker for the AC unit partly melted! While I wish the Strand Bros repairman had better diagnostic skills, that's another story. So I called Decker Electric and discussed the repair with them. They took the information on the circuit breaker panel and promised to be there about 6 PM. After not hearing from them after 6:30, I called and left a message. Five minutes later they pulled up to the house so I guess they were on the way when I called them. They quickly replaced the breakers and gave me the burned out unit. Their price was quite reasonable given the short notice and late hour. Professional and friendly folk who I'd use again.

They were easy to reach and schedule. The work was simple, but they explained everything to me clearly and courteously and they came prepared to do the work. I was working from home while they worked and they kindly waited until I could talk when we needed to discuss anything. Slight negatives: --They arrived a little late and didn't phone ahead. --When I called they made no mention that there would be a minimum charge plus a trip charge. Not a big deal as the resulting costs was reasonable.

I called Reid from Decker for a second quote and he came in $250 less than the first quote. He had great reviews and wanted to save some money, so I went with Decker. I set up an appointment within 5 days. They were a little late for my appointment but I was called to inform me of such. They were held up on another job and I fully understand because you want a complete job. Reid showed up with two extra people and completed the work within three hours. They were very professional and covered all the floors, made suggestions on light placement and cleaned up after themselves. While up in the attic, Reid saw a few things that I might want to address in the future but wasn't an emergency at this time. I will certainly use them again.
Description of Work: I had 5 canister lights and two dimmer switches installed and two old florescent fixtures removed. They also ran new wire and added a light switch in the garage. I furnished the dimmers, lights and canisters so this was just for the labor to install. He did not charge me for this service call. He was prompt. professional and friendly. I was impressed that he was even able to go to the house today (much less this morning) due to all of the electrical havoc yesterday's wind's caused. In the future, I will call Decker Electric for any work needed and will definitely refer this provider.
Description of Work: I found Decker Electric on Angie's List and called this morning. My son's house was affected by the high winds in the area last night and lost electric power, along with other services. He called the power company and it was restored, but this morning, he noticed wires coiled up on the grass and assumed they were the power company wires. Power company told him to call an electrician. I called Reid who went out to the house before noon and assessed the situation. The Power company had fixed the wires (which Reid saw that the service line was properly in place ) but informed me that it was the phone and internet lines that were on the ground.

I contacted Decker electric about a week before the service work was done (Dec 2012). I spoke with Reid. He quoted me around $158 for the job. I asked if I could use the $25 coupon from Angie's List. He said they expired at the end of September but he would still honor it. Reid and two electricians showed up on time to do the work. I showed Reid what I wanted done. He gave instructions to the two electricians and left for another site. Work was finished in one hour. Both fixtures look great installed. The light/ceiling fan switches on wall were wired correctly. They even fixed the light/ceiling switch in the guest bedroom so that the switch closest to the door turned on the light (it had been reversed before the service call.) I was billed $149 for the work and $30 for service call for a total of $175 less $25 coupon for a total of $154. I feel the $149 for work done is reasonable. I would prefer to have known there was a $30 service call fee on top of charges for work done. My assumption was that the $158 quoted over the phone included all fees. Other than that minor irritation I was happy with work done.
Description of Work: Two electricians moved a medium sized ceiling fan from master bedroom to guest bedroom. Installed new light fixture that I provided in the master bedroom.
