Hard to believe this is an A lister, my experience was horrible: - Appointment made in advance - A two hour time window promised - Did not show up in the two hour window - When I called to find out why, I was instructed the plumber was stuck in traffic - One hour later I called back - Then told the plumber was still on the same job No estimated time provided, unwilling to provide a different plumber to come out. I can't think of a worse service experience I've had in the last 3 years. Rethinking my Angie's List subscription.
Description of Work: Wow, what a disaster, they no showed an appointment, never bothered to call.

The story of replacing our water supply line is a complex saga. There were some hiccups along the way, but I was pleased with Steve's Plumbing Repair getting the issue resolved. We had a very old 1/2 inch galvanized steel pipe leading from the City of Austin water meter to our house. By modern standards, this is a grossly inadequate water supply. It was causing lack of flow issues at the house. I contacted some companies for bids, and found out it was going to be VERY expensive (like $4200+) for them to dig a 115 foot trench and replace the line. To save some money, I had the trench dug myself, since this is not really skilled labor. I got quotes from a few companies to do the rest of the work other than digging (laying the new line, connecting it, and backfilling the open trench). Steve's plumbing had the low bid from these companies, so I went with them. Then the first problem arose. There was a large tree (25-30 feet tall) blocking access to the COA water meter. Steve's Plumbing determined the tree was (thankfully) located on the city side--so it was the city's job to remove it, at no cost to me. This began a several week process of trying to get the City to come out and take down the tree. Steve's Plumbing kept me updated, but it was slow going before the City finally removed the tree so the work could start in earnest. While this delay was pretty annoying, I think it was due to government dragging its heels. When the City of Austin finally removed the tree, they neglected to remove the stump that was left in the ground. The stump, of course, is what was obstructing the buried water meter! Steve's Plumbing tried to get the City to finish the job by removing the stump as they should have, but the City again was dragging its heels. At this point, Steve's Plumbing just did the work themselves and bored through the stump (and cut through the cement sidewalk) so that we could connect the new line. They did not try to upcharge me at all, which I appreciated. We had another minor hiccup when I went to inspect the work in progress. The line being used was not PEX as we had specified, but was PVC. I requested the PVC be removed and replaced with PEX, which was done with no complaints. (PEX has better long term durability, which I wanted.) Finally the work was finished, and passed inspection on the first try. Steve's Plumbing backfilled the trench and poured new cement in the sidewalk to fix it, which looked good. The whole process took more than a month, but this was mostly due to delays from having to work with the City. After the job was finished, I had another question about my tankless water heater (the main reason we replaced the water supply line was the tankless heater was throwing up an insufficient water flow error code). A tankless expert plumberfrom Steve's called me this morning, and gave me a few troubleshooting tips that I could try myself before calling them out for service. This was much appreciated, and I would definitely use Steve's again.

When I bought my home, I did all of the inspections to ensure that the drain and sewer lines were in good shape. What started as a small leak in the inspection turned into a major repair job when a different plumber tried to fix it. After an initial estimate from the first plumber, I got 2 more estimates to replace the old or non-existent cast iron drain lines in my house. Steve's came in right in the middle, and after a camera test, they determined that I didn't need as much work done as several other plumbers had recommended. I chose Steve's because they seemed the most knowledgeable and gave me straightforward answers about the job. Ricky and team showed up on a Tuesday morning to start the job, and by the end of Tuesday, they had the entire main sewer line replaced and functioning (a job that another plumber told me would take 3 days and leave me without functioning toilets or sinks). To make sure that everything went as planned, Steve came out to make sure that everything was going to plan, and even got a preliminary inspection on the main line to make sure that it passed city standards. By Thursday, the crew had replaced kitchen drain line, dug a trench and installed a new washing machine drain line (it had previously just drained into the back yard), put in all new plumbing in my utility room, and replaced my galvanized master shower valve. By Thursday afternoon, the final inspection was done, the trench was filled back in, concrete in my foundation and patio were repoured, and they had completed the project. After the project, I saw that my kitchen sink was a little leaky, and they came out immediately to fix it. And they also came out a few weeks later to reinstall my shower fixtures once I was able to have the tile repaired. Having to have $11,000 worth of plumbing work done immediately after buying a house was incredibly stressful. But Steve's crew was exceptional, and I'll definitely be using them for any other plumbing issues that might arise in the future.

Service was excellent. Needed help on a Sunday and the serviceman, Larry, answered the phone right away and talked with me about my options. We did several things on the phone to determine if a service call was actually warranted or not which would have saved me money had it not been needed. Once we determined that he needed to come, he was very prompt and knowledgeable. He determined the problem (blocked washout drain, i think he said) and he quickly fixed it. He was very professional and the price was the minimum he said it would be.

Fair at best. The point of contact for me was Larry, and he impressed me and gave a better price compared to another bid. I learned later that Larry didn't do the work, other plumbers from Steve's did. They had to dig and install a valve cover which is a circular plastic, bottom-is-open box about 12" tall over the new valve. Since the depth of the hole was greater than roughly a foot, they had to use two covers stacked on top of each other, but failed to take the plate/lid off the lower cover, so I had no access to the shut off valve. I called the office and eventually talked to Larry and it was fixed the next day. The next day, the lack of access was fixed - only one plate on the cover and I could access the valve, but the top of the cover was about 4" above the ground line, which I couldn't stamp down and would surely chop off with the lawn mover. It needed to be dug out and reseated. I called the office and Larry came out the second day and reseated the cover so the top of the cover was closer to flush with the ground. The faucets were installed leak-tight and all worked OK, but the faucet opening was tilted anywhere from 30 degrees to 45 degrees off true. While this may be cosmetic, and the pipe threads may not allow sufficient rotation to get nearer to true, it was sloppy. I complained and Larry stopped by to correct as best as each faucet could take. The quality of work seems OK - better faucets that aren't leaking and a house cutoff that is accessible and works. I don't understand how Master Plumbers could be so slip-shod. I asked the office if they had a supervisor to check work, and maybe mine was a smaller job not needing supervision, though it was surely needed. The main reason I went with Steve's was because of Larry - and because Larry explained that a city permit was needed and would be part of the price. Still waiting for the results of the city inspect. I know that is on the City's time, not Steve's.

Had a pipe leaking in the attic around the hot water heater. It was leaking down from second story to first story pantry. Found plumber on alist and called him because of good reviews. Plumber showed up quickly late on a Friday night and fixed the issue. While we paid emergency plumber rates for the quick fix, the cost was a small percentage of what it would have cost if the pipe had leaked all night. I would use this plumber again no doubt. Thanks Steve!

In summary: WOW. Larry had been out a few months back to give an estimate on another job. We went with another company on that one, but I was impressed enough with him that when I ran into an issue with this self-repair -- a jammed washer that I couldn't remove, and old copper tubing that I didn't particularly want to deal with -- I called Steve's Plumbing first. Lisa, who took the initial call, was polite and patient while answering several questions. I called in mid-afternoon, and she scheduled the install for early the next morning. Larry was prompt, called ahead to let me know he was on his way, and completed the job in less time than I expected given that I'd already had my head under the sink and knew it would take some extra effort. The price was quite reasonable, too. Well done, Larry, Lisa, and Steve's Plumbing. You've won a permanent customer.

I called on a Friday morning fearing that my water would be disabled for the weekend. The plumber(s) showed up 30 minutes after my call and fixed the leak plus put the yard back in about an hour. The tech called ahead and showed up on time. He was polite and attentive as I explained the problem. He took about 5 minutes to assess the problem and told me he had to get the replacement part. He was gone about 30 minutes and then came back with the part. In the process of replacing the part, he found another thing that needed to be replaced. He did a good job of explaining what he was doing as he went. Either he was so neat that he didn't create a mess, or he did a good job of cleaning up after himself, because when he was done there were no signs that he'd been there - other than the fact that the water heater was working! I am so happy to have found a good, reliable plumber!

Had a plumber scheduled for 3-5. Received a call at 2:30 that they were on the way. At 3:00 received a call from the plumber scheduled that he had been rerouted to an emergency call and it would be later that evening, but he was not sure when. I called the office and they were able to find another plumber who could be there shortly and he was there at 4:00. He did a great job of diagnosing the problem and giving me the correct information so that I could get the warranty claim approved. Very through and fast. Would recommend them based on my service.

Steve's plumbing stuck with the complicated job until it was completed. Our 1959 renovation presented some big plumbing challenges. Several of their plumbers & plumber's helpers gave it a good effort, working very hard, but it was not until the more experienced plumbers tackled our issues did they get resolved. A couple of the plumber's helpers did things that had to be redone. We hired them them to do additional projects as well, so all in all we are pleased with Steve's Plumbing. Our suggestion would be to request someone on their staff that is experienced with whatever your specific issues are. The exceptional thing about the company is the office staff! They are always friendly, up beat, responsive, efficient, and sincerely helpful, and very easy to work with. Bottom line: Steve's plumbing did a good job and we are pleased with the work.
