The problem was that water pressure measured at 60lb when nothing was running, but dropped to ~5lb pressure when any faucet was turned on. This is a repair that requires getting a city permit, replacing the valve, city inspection ... so way beyond the normal problems I would take care of myself. The serviceman was Brandon ... exceptionally professional and polite ... who quickly diagnosed the problem, explained what was happening and gave a very reasonable quote to repair. NOTE: My brother runs an electrical service, so people need to realize that customers have to cover dispatch time, gas, cost of the truck, salaries, etc. ... for it to be worth the businesses time to perform work. The initial quote was $500 to dig around the pipe, replace the PRV, get permits, etc. And he came in exactly on target. He also notes that the city inspector would want the house to be up to code. Sometimes that might be a sales job, but I knew if we ever want to sell the house we would do that, and again the quote for the equipment and installation was reasonable. Brandon was friendly, informative, polite, and thorough, taking time to explain to me a few things I didn't realize about my plumbing. There is absolutely no doubt that I would use Steve's Plumbing again .... especially if I can request Brandon.
Description of Work: Replace PRV (Pressure Reducing Valve) on main water line. Install water heater expansion tank (to bring house up to code).

It went very well. The service appointment was scheduled the day after I called. Two plumbers arrived on time. It took a while to find the water cutoff to my condo unit, but once turned off the work was done quickly. In turning the water cutoff back on, the handle broke. This led to talks with the condo management company, but Steve's Plumbing came back the next day to fix that as well (cost for that part covered by the management company).
Description of Work: Replace outdoor faucet. Fix indoor faucet.

It sucked. But at least in the end Steve was a gentleman and fair. I can't say what kind of plumbing Steve does, this screw up may have been a fluke. But I was not only dissatisfied with the work but horrified by the administrative follow-through... Thank goodness my association with Steve's Plumbing is over and I assume they feel the same way!
Description of Work: Steve's Plumbing came to my son's home in Austin to fix a stopped up sewer pipe. For the price of $260, they said they would diagnose the problem using a camera, so that we would know where to dig. They had some difficulty in determining the exact break in the pipe due to sewage and put a marker on the ground where they said the break was located. The lady in the office then told me that to dig a hole there would be a $600 charge even if they did not find a break in that spot and that the $600 would not apply to the whole job, and the final location of the break might be further on... but the $600 was just to dig a rather small hole where the marker was left to determine if that was the location of the break. She said that it must be paid up front before they began to dig and would not be part of the whole bill. It seemed like a penalty to just begin the digging process. It was nonnegotiable and so I didn't go with their offer to give them $600 just to dig a two food long hole to complete the diagnosis. Another plumber and friend fixed it and reported to me that the place where Steve's Plumbing had marked the ground was approximately 8 - 10 feet from the actual place in the pipe that was broken. I called Steve's Plumbing to let them know and asked them to revise the bill. I then never heard from them until a County Constable showed up at my son's house in Austin looking for me to serve papers from Steve's Plumbing. I immediately phoned Steve's Plumbing and spoke to a gentleman who knew about my case and he said someone would call me back. I waited almost a week and no one called. I then found Steve Brougher's email on the Internet and sent an urgent message begging for a reply. After much worrying and waiting (OMG! I'm being sued!!!), Steve called me personally and he was direct and polite. I wish I had talked to him all along instead of the staff that never contacted me and rather than calling me (they did have my cell phone # because I had given it to them and saved theirs on my phone) instead of contacting me they sued me. When I finally spoke with Steve, I readily paid $200 ($60 reduction) just as I had been all along willing to pay. I felt it was fair that I only pay for part of the charges for the camera, since it was not completed as promised. Why did they sue me??? It costs them $75 to hire the constable and then they had legal fees and all for naught.

Response from Champion AC of Austin, LLC
Thank you for your review, Member. We tried to unstop your sewer line at your home and performed a camera test on the sewer line at your request in order to locate a suspected break in the sewer yard line. We marked the area of the yard at the point where the camera could not locate any further due to sewage stuck in the pipe from the broken sewer line. We were unable to inspect the remaining portion of sewer line. At this point, we gave you a price of $600.00 to pull a City of Austin permit for inspection, dig up the sewer line at the area marked in the yard in order to further locate the actual location of the broken sewer line to give you a more accurate estimate of the repair needed on the sewer line. You declined our service at that time. We attempted to contact you on 7/10/2012 by phone and by mailing a past due invoice notice to you. The number we have on record for you was no longer in service at this time. We attempted contact with you again on 8/10/2012 and 9/10/2012 in the same manner. All three attempts received no response from you. We submitted your original invoice of $260.00 to our collections attorney at that time. We then heard from you on 10/3/2012 via email. I called you the next day, 10/4/2012, and talked with you about the work that we performed back in April, the unpaid invoice, and the work that needed to be done on the sewer line repair. During our conversation you mentioned that you had the repair completed already by another plumber. I inquired whether your plumber pulled a permit from the City of Austin and had an inspection performed on the repair to which you seemed unaware of this requirement by City of Austin Code Ordinance and did not know if a permit was in fact pulled to make the repair on your sewer line. To date, a permit nor inspection has been made for this repair. Also, during our conversation, we agreed to settle the bill for the original invoice of $260.00 to $200.00 for the camera work already performed, to which you paid promptly over the phone. Thank you, it was much appreciated. I also dropped all pending claims with our collections attorney at no cost to you. Thank you for your honesty regarding the work we performed for you. In the future, I would recommend hiring a plumber that is properly licensed, insured, and knowledgeable of the City of Austin Code Ordinance and Uniform Plumbing Code requirements in regards to permit and inspection requirements for plumbing repairs. I pride myself and my company with all of these attributes, including the Master Plumber of more than 25 years in the trade who initially worked on the sewer line and performed the camera test at your home. Best Regards, Steve Brougher Master Plumber, M-39722

I called the company in the morning around 8 am and they scheduled an appointment between 2-4pm. My technician called before he was to arrive and was withing the time frame they had estimated. Very professional yet also very personable. He answered all my questions. As indicated above I had the option to provide my own unit but agreed to use theirs. He had the old unit out and the new one in within an hour and he was on his way. Nothing complex or unusual just quick and efficient and a fair price. I would use them again.
Description of Work: Found a leak under my kitchen sink and couldn't easily isolate what the problem was. I expected the garbage disposal but didn't realize they rust out. The leak was a result of the garbage disposal and I had the plumber replace with a new unit. The technician gave me the option of going to get a unit on my own(would have been a bit cheaper) but I agreed to have him replace it with their Badger model he had on the truck.

I heard the sound of dripping water and discovered a flex line with a leak and hot water spraying out in my attic. I turned off the water shutoff to the house and called one plumber who was too busy to help me. I called Steves Plumbing and a plumber arrived in about thirty minutes. Regrettably, he discovered that the leaking flex line was soldered to a fitting that was crimped to an obsolete section of Kytec tube. Kytec is no longer manufactured and the available supply of fittings and crimping tools are rare. After talking with his boss, our plumber was able to find a source for the rare fitting and tool that was delivered to our house within about an hour or so despite rush hour traffic. In the meantime he replaced a leaking toilet bowl seal for me while he waited for the Kytek fitting. Once the part arrived, it was installed within minutes and both plumbers from Steves Plumbing Repair were on their way home. I'm grateful that the job was done after normal working hours instead of making me wait to the next day without water. i will use Steve's Plumbing Repair the next time I need plumbing work.

After having 4 other local companies (all highly recommended on Yelp) come out to assess the issue of my washing machine drain line backing up into my garage (a year long issue), I decided to go with Steve's crew for 2 reasons: they were honest and thorough with diagnosing the issue. Every other company gave me theoreticals about what it could be, and even after camera inspections, most just told me that I should go ahead and re-route the drain line around the outside of my 1963 house (which my insurance company does not cover) and would cost somewhere in the neighborhood of $10k. Ricky and Sam, bless them, came out to investigate and I learned more about my issue in 1 hour than all the other companies combined. Ricky found an area that was difficult to pass through with the camera, pinpointed the location, and showed me on the camera what he was seeing. Sam was busy finding my clean out and found it buried some 3 feet underground. After walking me through the entire issue, Ricky advised it was best to punch a hole in the foundation and fix the area that appears broken. They did all that for a $100 camera inspection. After seeing their work ethic compared to all the others, it was an easy decision to go with them. Didn't even entertain other estimates once the direction was determined on how to fix the problem, I just knew they would do a good job, and having that feeling with plumbers is of utmost importance. Scheduling the work was a piece of cake. Same crew came out on Monday to jackhammer the slab. Did an amazing job working around all of the existing rebar. Located the break and sure enough roots growing all around a clean separation in the pipe. Cut out a 2 foot section of pipe and reconnected it. Fortunately the galvanized steel pipes did not show tremendous wear. Wall thickness of the pipe was still incredibly good so from my vantage point, I just bought me 15-20 more years before I'll have to consider the more traditional "re-routing" and that means I just saved $6k. They coordinated the engineers and city inspectors and by Thursday the hole was filled back in and I was back in business washing clothes without pools of water in my home. No question as long as I live in Austin, Steve's Plumbing Repair will be the company I call on when I need plumbing work, and with any luck, will always get the same crew that did this work for me.

They did a marvelous job and gave us a wonderfully competitive rate. I had a quote from Roto-Rooter for $5000, but they did it for roughly $2400. It was phenomenal and I was very pleased with them. I liked that they were in the neighborhood. Plumbers can command fairly robust prices and a lot of times the work is not that good, but these guys did a wonderful job.
Description of Work: They replaced a sewer line from the house out to the street. It had to be replaced because it was a sewer line that was used when the house was built and all the houses in the neighborhood had to do it.

Steve's Plumbing company came to the rescue last year when i was having a closing the next day and the pipes from the house to the street collapsed. I called and explained my dire situation and they came thru for me. Even sent extra workers to get the job finished, inspected and cleaned up the yard. (Yes, cleaned up! ) I am so thankful to them because if it had not been finished, my closing would have fallen thru.Steve's also came earlier in that month when another plumbing company ripped me off and did not finish a job and what had been done a lot of their work failed inspection. They corrected everything and inspection passed.

Steve's work crew located the break, repaired it and had the city inspector out to approve the repair within a week. They did not make a mess of the yard, and it was returned to it's original condition when the work was completed. They also worked quietly and did not disturb me at all. They checked all their work, including water pressure and faucets outside the house before finishing the job, and asked only for the location of an electrical outlet the first day. We were very pleased with their work, and especially with the reasonable price instead of the price gouging the other company quoted. I will gladly call them for any job in the future.
Description of Work: Tree roots broke the PVC pipe that took wastewater from our home and yard, resulting in exorbitant water bills for 12 weeks until we discovered the cause of the problem. We had estimates from three companies ranging from $1,900 to as much as $6,000 to completely replace the line! I had a recommendation to try Steve's, and called. They responded quickly, gave a free estimate, as promised, and gave a very reasonable repair quote.

I called various places this morning to get estimates, was told replacing the cut-off valve should take about an hour to an hour and a half. Some places gave me hourly rates ($110-$120) and told me it was time plus materials. Others gave me a fee for the job ($275-$300). Steve's gave me a range of $165-$265, depending on how long it took. They said they could get to it this afternoon, so I went with them (plus the receptionist said the 5% discount coupon on Angie's List was still relevant). They came much earlier, which was great (they called first). The plumber was here from 10 AM - 11 AM, and he didn't encounter any trouble, so I was expecting the price to be on the low end of the range I was given However, my bill came to $247 because I was billed for 2 hours (which he said included the time to go get the valve, which he had in hand when he arrived). While this amount still fell in the range I was quoted, I ended up feeling gouged. I would expect plumbing repair places to have a supply of basic valves, or that the cost of materials would include the time it takes to acquire those materials. If you are paying a professional rate of well over $100/hour, and they spend an hour getting a valve before they arrive at your house, by the time you pay for that hour of their time and the price of the valve itself, the valve alone ends up costing more than the hour of labor to install it. That's one incredibly expensive quarter-turn valve. I'd have happily picked it up myself ahead of time. In short, I wouldn't use them again.
