They called me within 48h of my online submission request. Karen was apologetic about the delay, claiming my request had been sent to her junk email. We set up a day/time and the tech showed up on time. The work was professional and he cleaned up afterwards.
Description of Work: Installed a cable and phone line/jack into an upstairs bedroom that had been converted into an office.

I bought an old house and wanted to make some electrical improvements. She came to install some new outlets and grounding but while she was working noticed that there was some old know and tube wiring in the attic. I knew it was there but didn't realize it was active. I arranged to have her come back and address this at a later date. She came back 3 or 4 weeks later and replaced that most critical parts of the old wiring and, while she was in the attic, fixed the doorbell. The work went very well. Karen is highly experienced and very professional. Although the work seemed expensive I think she probably charged a lot less than someone else would have. I found her to be very honest, personable and pleasant. I would definitely recommend her.
Description of Work: Karen did two jobs for me. First, she replaced some breakers, added 6 new outlets on a new circuit, added a GFCI, and grounded two other outlets. Second, she came back and removed a lot of old knob and tube wiring in the attic, installed new boxes for switches and lights, added junction boxes in the attic, and rewired some switches.

Hi Member, I thank you for the good report and I hope you are doing well. I'm a little confused on the B grades and wondereing where we failed. My goal is to give everyone the best service experience possible and because of that, I feel I failed in your case. The scheduling was hard to do when we both have a busy schedule and things could change for us at any time, especially since we are a 2 man company. I remember you saying there was no hurry so I didn't realize you really meant sooner. For that I am sorry. I remember having to change the schedule because of you needing the power to work and another time because we got sick. It was also a very rainy season if I recall rightly and we were trying to work in the rain. I also tell all my customers that emergencies take priority so if we were late it might have been because of that but I always called to update you every time something changed just to keep you informed It takes a lot of time to rewire a house that is mostly knob and tube wiring and at that point I knew money was getting tight and the wiring you had was a mess. We cleaned up the worst of it by rerunning new wires, pulling out old boxes, and setting many junction boxes but before we could do that we had to trace out the wires which knob and tube wiring is very hard to trace. Between that and the enormous cost of materials these days, the price can seem excessive. I wished things were cheaper. In reference to the quality, if you feel there is something that is not of good quality just let me know and we will fix it. The house is very old and the sheetrock very brittle so we couldn't help little pieces that may have fallen out when cutting through your shiplap/sheetrock walls if that is what you didn't like. That I can't fix but I want you to be 100% satisfied so just let me know what went wrong and I'm there for you. Thank you for the recommendations and the kind words even though I feel we didn't make you totally satisfied which is always my goal. I wish the best to you and you new wife and I hope you have many happy, happy years in your new home. Just remember, I'm just down the street if you need me. Thanks again Karen Phaup Master Electrician A-One Electric 497-1513 Please accept my sincere apollogy for anything that didn't make your experience a good one. I totally understand how hard it is to have some one come into your space and take it over and even change it.

She never completed the project correctly. I asked her what she wanted me to pay her for the job. I paid her because I felt bad that she had been in the hospital. She said she was supposed to get more money per hour than we originally agreed on. She said that I underpaid her, but never gave me a bill or completed the job correctly.

Member, Did something recently upset you that would cause you to write such a bad review about me after more than 4 years? I have done many jobs for you at which point you seemed to be happy about the service, the work, and the price. If you were not happy with my work, why did you keep hiring me? The last thing I remeber was in order to wire the speakers into your appartment I would have had to cut through sheetrock to hide the wires. You didn't want to do that and I totally understand because then the sheetrock has to get repaired and painted and it gets costly. I wouldn't want to do that in my own home either. Because of the, we were having a hard time trying to figure out a way that would work for you. I remember buying the speaker wire, which I left at your house, finished up the other things you wanted done and told you to call me when you decided what you wanted. I never heard from you again at which point I assumed you gave up on the idea of wiring in speakers. In reference to fees, I have always given you a discount for the fact that I knew you were on a tight budget. I've even gone as far as going to Home Depot with you to help you pick something out. That was on my time and you were never charged for that. I could have said no and I could have charged you my going rate but I felt sorry for your situation and wanted to help you out. So my question is, if you didn't like the way the job was left, why didn't you call me? If I was such a bad person, why did you keep hiring me and if I did not give you a receipt and you wanted one, why didn't you call? And for your information,I have never left a job incomplete on purpose or tried to take advantage of someone even when I get treated poorly so I'm sorry If you feel that way. I have learned one thing though over my 30 years of doing electrical work and that is no matter how hard you try to make someone happy and do the right thing, there will always be someone you can't please no matter what. If you still want that receipt after 4 years please write me and tell me the date, the amount, and the work performed and I will make sure you get that receipt. My address is plainly listed. Sincerely, Karen Phaup

I called Karen right before the Christmas holiday asking if she could have someone help me out before company came. My heater wiring was smoking and I knew it needed attention. She was able to schedule Bill to come out, and he had everything taken care of in a couple of hours.
Description of Work: This company is wonderful - responsive and professional. I needed rewiring of my A/C and heating unit - Billy took care of it and I feel like my home is safe again! I would definitely recommend these folks and I will use them again.

I found them on Angie’s List. I spent about $300 on the job. They were excellent. They cleaned up after they completed the work; they did it without being asked. Everything worked out well for me. They were very professional. They listened to me, which was biggest thing for me. They really understood the problem before they got into it. They asked me important questions throughout. They delivered exactly what I wanted. I will use them again in the future.

Billy was very professional and thorough. He was friendly and very polite. He worked at a good pace and was done quickly. I felt that Karen and Billy handled themselves professionally with a very strong good customer service attitude. I will have electrical work in the future that I will give A One Electric an opportunity to do and would recommend them to others.
Description of Work: Woke up 10-12-2011 with electricity out in half of my house. Due to work obligations and since fridge and a/c was plugged into working half, I waited until 10-13-2011 to contact an electrician. Karen picked up on my first try to contact and gave me some advice on steps to take that might save me money. After taking the steps, I still needed an electrician, so I called back and Karen again picked up and indicated that she would be sending Billy over soon and that I would receive a call when he was on his way. About an hour or so later, the call came and Billy arrived within 15-30 min. later. He located the problem in my main switch (it was a burned out very old fuse) and fixed it. He then checked the wiring from the main switch to the breaker panel to make sure that wiring did not cause the problem. When he determined that was good, he checked the wiring in the rest of the attic and determined that still looked good. Price was well within the range that I had researched.

Karen did all the work within just a few hours. She had to run a new line all the way up through the attic (in this horrific heat!) to the opposite end of the house where the breaker box is located on the outside back of the house. She even noted that my breaker box had a breaker that was not made by the manufacturer and changed that out for me as well. She's very detail oriented; tightening all the screws on the inside to ensure proper connection. She is a pleasure to do business with and is as fair as they come. Her charge for her service is unbelievably reasonable, and I'm positive that her prices can not be beat. I look forward to A One Electrical handling all of my electrical repair/services for here on out. If you're reading this, you'd be wise to call her up and see for yourself!

Once I realized that in removing the unneeded phone jackI had lost all phone service in the house I went to Angie's List, found A-One Electric on Sunday afternoon and sent an email. I was amazed when Karen called first thing Monday morning. The first thing she tried to do was talk me through the repair on the phone to save a trip to the house and repair charges. Unfortunately the wiring was not color coded the way she anticipated and her suggestions over the phone didn't work. She agreed to do her best to come by the house Monday PM. She did so and was able to figure out the abnormal wiring scheme and reconnect the necessary wires to restore service. She did so in about 20 minutes and only charged a service call. I will Definitely call A-one electric anytime I have a small electrical or phone issue that needs attention. Karen was terrific.
Description of Work: We had a phone jack that was no longer needed. I wanted to remove the connection box and put a blank plate over the opening. This action I took myself thinking the connection was dead. Unfortunately, that was not the case and I lost my connection to all phones in the house. A-one Electric was able to come by the following day, determine the problem and reconnect the necessary wiring.

Hi Member, It was a pleasure working with you and meeting you. Thank you for the great review. I truly am sorry that I have to charge so much to do a simple job. By he time I drive out there, pay for the extremely hi gas for my truck, and pay the IRS, I end up making almost enough to pay myself after paying the overhead for he business. I just enjoy helping people without trying to gouge them. This is why I won't charge a sevice call fee on top of the charge for the work. Thank you again and I hope you, your house, and your family stay safe. Karen

I used A One in the past for installations, repairs and to add a 220v line to the kitchen, so when I needed fans and lighting fixtures installed, I called Karen. I called them with very little notice so wasn't hopeful I would be able to get the work done on the day most convenient for me, but they were able to fit me in. Gilbert does fine work and I am satisfied with the value (quality, dependability vs.price) I recevie. I will use A One the next time I need electrical services.

Hi Member, I'm glad we were able to get out on the days you were available. We try to make that happen with everyone. We are fortunate enough to get such nice customers as yourself who are will to work with ours and everyone elses schedule so we were able to move people around. I'm sorry you're not totally happy with the price but we were there for a day and a half and reduced our price as low as we could go which is lower than most companies who charge service calls on top of everything. Hopefully in the future things will not be so time consuming because I feel bad when we can't make someone 100% happy. Thank you for the great review and I hope everything goes smooth in your house. If you ever need anything please feel free to call and we will always try to help and even give out recommendations. Thanks again, Karen Phaup - Master Electrician

It went great, including coordinating with my tenant.
Description of Work: My tenant reported a problem with an expensive dryer that she thought may have been cause by the house wiring. The electrician determined that the problem originated in the dryer and that there were no problems with the house wiring and no damage to the house when the appliance power cord "burned up." The electrician also identified that my HVAC system did not have the optimal breakers matched to it. This had resulted from when I replaced the HVAC with a more efficient system. I authorized replacement of the breakers. So, I got pease of mind regarding the first issue and I got the bonus of better circuit protection for the HVAC in the same service call. I am very satisfied with A-One and will use them again.

This is the 2nd time I have had someone from A-One to my home. I am a happy customer. This time, Master Electrician Karen, was able to schedule an appointment for me within 2 days of my initial call. The big issue was the electrical surge that happened whenever the newly installed Central AC cycled on. [The AC Installer had advised that the reason this didn't happen with my old AC (which presumably drew more power, since it was less efficient) was that the old system had a 2 stage start up process designed to ease the demand for power to the unit.] Karen ran a diagnostic on the connections for the new AC, as well as running tests on both the outdoor breaker box and the older, indoor breaker box. She asked me to call the AC Installer, which I did, so she could ask him specific questions about what he had already tried to do to address the problem, and about the specific system. At some point she became concerned about a fluctuation in readings of the power coming from the city and contacted the city to ask for them to come and check it out. While waiting for them to either call or show up, she worked on installing the electrical outlet I wanted for use in my front yard. We agreed on the interior box that was best positioned for the job. The exterior box looks good and works well for me. At the same time, she replaced the interior outlet box, advising that it was old enough that replacing it would be a good idea (it probably is an original for a 45+ yr old home). She also remounted the dangling ceiling fixture, using a fan brace this time instead of a light fixture brace, since the fixture globe screws off on & on and puts torque on the fixture every time I replace a bulb. The City of Austin guy showed up pretty fast. After getting the scoop from Karen, he got up on the roof to replace or reconfigure something in the wires that connected the city line to the house; AND committed to coming back on Monday to replace the line connecting their pole to my house with a slightly larger capacity line. Karen stayed until the man from the city was gone and she had done all she could do. Although the power surge issue was not resolved, after Karen's analysis and explanation, I was more at ease that it wasn't a safety issue. Karen was that combination I like - both professional and easy going. I didn't feel stressed out having her in the house, and she communicated with me and answered my questions all along the way.
Description of Work: Three issues: Installed an outdoor electrical outlet for use w/lawn equipment, power tools, & Christmas lights in the front of the house. Replaced corresponding indoor outlet at same time with an updated product. Reinstalled a ceiling light fixture that appears to have gotten pushed or vibrated out during Central AC installation. Analyzed & coordinated with City of Austin re problem with electrical surge that happened every time newly installed Central AC cycled on.

Hi Member, Thanks for the great review. I try to treat my customers all the same but when someone like you is so nice and easy to work with, it makes our job more enjoyable. I'm sorry your lights are still dimming a little. The only thing left that can be done is to upgrade your electrical service like we talked about since the AC is demanding a hair more power than what is coming into the house. If you want to talk about it some more please give me a call. We have been very swamped lately but I'll always find time to talk to you. Thanks again, Karen Phaup - Master Electrician - 512-497-1513

First of all, Karen was able to fit me in on the day I wanted with very short notice so that was greatly appreciated. My exterior lights have always been an issue, my husband had replaced the builder grade lights 10 years ago but those had become faded and worn from the weather plus he's not an electrician and wasn't able to get them perfectly flush to the house. The first light Karen replaced was mounted to limestone which needed to be chipped away in areas to get the light to mount properly - Karen did a beautiful job and that light looks like it should have looked when the house was built. On the second light Gilbert had to install a Pancake box to get it to mount flush (sounds pretty important - not sure why builder didn't have that in place)and the same with the third (ceiling) light fixture. While Gilbert worked on the exterior lighting Karen climbed a huge ladder to assess the noisy wobbly ceiling fan. She immediately found something wrong with an installation screw or piece that was causing part of the problem but ultimately advised that due to the age of the fan (10+ years) the blades were too warped to change the wobble factor. Whatever she corrected has stopped the noise and we are now able to use the fan on the low setting. I wish I had known about Karen when I had this beautiful fan installed by a much less competent electrician 10+ years ago. I will call Karen to install its replacement as soon as I find one I like! Karen was all set to install the bedroom ceiling fan when I discovered a piece of the base broken. I thought I might be able to glue it back because I really liked that discontinued fan (of which there are no more of) but Karen showed me how that little piece was helping to hold the screen or filter over the motor and that would now be compromised. She advised me against using this fan, so lesson learned that I will thoroughly check over the next one I purchase before calling her out. I will definitely call Karen again for any electrical need - in fact a Facebook friend just asked if anyone knew of a fair and honest electrician so I jumped at the chance to put Karen's info out there for all to see!
Description of Work: Installation of 3 new exterior light fixtures, bedroom ceiling fan and troubleshoot and hopefully correct wobbly/noisy great room ceiling fan.

We called Karen...she came out and determined what was required for us to completely replace the outside service panel and meter box. It was determined that we would need a hole dug for a grounding plate. Luckily we had landscapers working in the yard...and they were able to dig the hole for us. (Their fee is much less than the hourly rate for an electrician). All work was done in one day including the city coming out in the morning for the full disconnect and the inspection and reconnect were done just after noon. Work was done professionaly and timely. This is not the first time we have used A-One Electric...Karen and Gilbert both do fantastic work.

We called Karen to come out and see if she could install an electrical outlet above our fireplace so we could have a new TV installed. After crawling around in our attic and much probing, it was decided that there was not enough space to run a line down through the wall, she would have to punch several small holes in the wall beside the fireplace to run a line to accomplish what we wanted. This would not be a problem as we were having cabinets built in and the holes would be hidden. We called Karen back to do the install once the TV was purchased and we had a delivery date. Gilbert arrived to do the install and checked in the attic once again to see if he could find a way to drop a line so he wouldn't have to punch holes in the wall. He was able to use his equipment and get the outlet safely placed through a small space in the attic. I don't know how he did it, but he was great!! This is the second time that we have used A-One Electric and will definitely call them if we need further work done.

The electrical circuit blew when we had too many devices operating (their was no clue they were all on the same circuit since they were scattered over the kichen / breakfast area. We tripped the circuit breakers and the interrupter switch to no avail. We called Karen and she came out promptly, solved the problem, and had an informative discussion with my husband about various electrical matters. She was great! Then she even reduced her rate because the problem was so easily solved--with her expertise!
Description of Work: We had a mysterious electrical outage in one kitchen circuit. Karen solved the problem embarassingly quickly and gave us a break on her usual charge. Meanwhile, she chatted with my husband and gave him useful info about the electrical wiring, etc., in our house.

Excellent--they solved our electrical problems fast and really know their stuff. The job took considerable work and expertise to figure out--their prices are reasonable and in line with work by licensed, professional electricians. And they are both very nice people.
Description of Work: Our older house has some serious wiring problems. When a circuit completely fried out Karen came right over and checked it out. She did some investigating and got the power back on for us temporarily and the next morning Gilbert came by, figured out what was wrong--not easy with the wiring mess at my house--and fixed everything.

Hi , Thanks for taking a chance on us and being so patient and understanding with us while we were trying to figure out that web of wiring. Hope things get better at home and hope they catch the bad guy. And most of all thanks for making me laugh. If we can help you out in any way give us a holler. Karen Phaup 497-1513

It went very well. Karen came out promptly and gave me a fair and accurate estimate, then her guy came out the following day and performed the work. It was a pretty straightforward job and I have no complaints at all.
Description of Work: I converted a closet into a computer closet by having A-One install a dedicated power circuit and patch panel in the closet, then run cat-6 network cable into each bedroom. A few days later I brought them back out to replace a burned out attic fan. This review reflects the total price I paid for both visits.

My electrician came out and not only told us what the problem was with the AC, but she also pointed out fire hazards and upgrades that needed to be done in our old home. She did all the wiring and what she couldn't do, she had someone else come in to assist her. She gave us some good tips about the wiring in our home and she was very trustworthy and reliable. I am so happy and grateful to have found this company and will use them again.
Description of Work: We hired them to come out to check our AC connection.

The worker arrived exactly on time, and proceeded to quietly perform the work. It required running new wire in the attic which has been blown deep in cellulose insulation. It required almost three hours to complete the job - seemed about right to me, and the worker did not waste time or get distracted. Excellent, high quality work.
Description of Work: I needed three "hardwired" (connected to 120 V AC) smoke detectors installed - one to replace an old one in a hallway, and then one in each of two bedrooms. All three of them needed to be wired together so that any one of them would trigger all three to sound.
