Response from Benjamin Franklin Plumbing
I am so sorry this was your experience! You voiced some concerns, and I would like to address them one by one. 1) The work was OK. I am not sure how you can fairly come to this conclusion when the job has not been completed. Once the work is completed, you will be asked to view and approve, and once approved to your 100% satisfaction, we will ask for your final signature and the job will be done. Wouldn't it be fair to wait until the job is completed? It does come with a 100% satisfaction guarantee, and a 20 year warranty....in writing. 2) The tech was testy. This is of deep importance to us. Please call the office immediately, and we will take care of the situation in the appropriate manner. 3) The price was too high. Before the plumber started any work he diagnosed your issue, and gave you several options for repair written out including pricing for each. You then chose your option and initialed next to it approving the repair and the price presented. The plumber then wrote up the service report, detailing what the scope of work would be, and this included the pricing also (the same price from your option sheet). He then asked for you signature to approve the scope he had written, the price for the repair, and signifying your approval to start work (this is clearly stated on the service report, and explained to you). In other words, the scope of the repairs, including the price, were given to you two times before any work was started, and you signed both times that you agreed with the scope, and the price, and wanted the work to begin immediately, which it did. Can you help me understand how we could have been more fair, and up front with our pricing, than that? You are also set to receive a 15% discount on your price because you are a Ben Society member! This was not the first time you have used us, so you already know (after multiple visits) that all our work is quality work, guaranteed in writing, parts & labor, that our techs are fully trained & licensed, and that we have a 100% satisfaction guarantee. Our prices are comparable to every plumber of the same caliber in the area, but our warranties and guarantees are the best in the business. I look forward to hearing from you after the work has been completed to your complete satisfaction, and please call to discuss any issue with your technician.

There were additional costs on top of the big deal. They came and did what they were supposed to do and left. They however did not close the hole and when it rains, it fills up with water. The dug a trench to send the water out.

It was very informative. He used a camera to look in my sewer line and show me where breaks were and how much they would charge to repair it. I had a leaking outside faucet and they gave me information on repairing it. He was there for about 30 minutes. I came to the conclusion they are one of the most expensive plumbers. He was friendly and knowledgeable.

We just wanted them to replace 2 faucets that we had already purchased. They insisted on replacing pipes from the wall to the sink in order to do this. The job ended up costing twice as much as what we paid for the deal because of this. In my opinion this was not necessary.

The coupon from Angie's List is for $200 worth of plumbing for $99....that does not mean that the job will be done for the $200....it means that no matter what the total bill comes to, you will get $200 taken off the total bill. Angie's List does not make this clear, and I am very sorry for that. I am also a bit confused as our records indicate that the only work we did for you was to replace the faucets you supplied...and nothing else. We did replace your stop and supply lines because it is recommended when replacing the faucet, and is a safety feature for you. I am not sure what pipes you think we replaced for you, but if you call us we can certainly discuss what was truly done at your home....you should also have a detailed service report that was left with you by the technician. Since we always provide your options, have you initial your approval next to the option you choose (that includes the price), then do a detailed report explaining what we are doing, then have you sign your approval to the work and the total, and we do all this before starting any work, I am confused as to how you believe we did work for you that we did not do. Please call the office a soon as possible, and we will be happy to help you get to the bottom of this. Thank you for choosing Ben Franklin Plumbing!

They can't fix anything in the house. They can only replace everything. They do not have any plumbing parts nor do they think they can find any parts for what I have in my house. Overall they are not able to repair anything only replace. Beware of this deal!!!! I got nothing except for a lot of expensive estimates done for my $99. I cannot afford to have any work done. I will have to call a local plumber to get my shower and sink fixed and not replaced.

It is important to note a few things: 1) You were not charged anything by Ben Franklin. We came to your home, diagnosed your issues, and left you estimates to repair them...at no cost to you. 2) The notes from our tech state that whoever installed the valve in your tub/shower installed a mobile home faucet, and because of that he may not be able to rebuild it, and recommended replacement. 3) Once the issues in your home were diagnosed you were presented with different repair/replacement options before any work was to be done. I wish that the coupons from Angie's List were easier to understand. They are for $200 worth of plumbing for $99.....that does not state that all work will be done for under the $200, it states that no matter what the total would have come to, we would take $200 off your bill. I am sorry you had this experience, and if you call in the future we ensure that you are taken care of. Have a blessed day!

They have done work for me twice and it was very good. I purchased an $89 Big Deal for a portion of this service. My advice to others is to call them because they are good. They come, do their work and don't bug me. They are very professional and do their work and go. The price was much less than I thought it would be. Their work has still held up because it was good. I have told my daughter and her husband that if they needed a plumber to call Ben Franklin.

Actually, we replaced your outside faucet & PVC adapter, untangled the kitchen sprayer hose, pulled and reset the toilet, and replaced the flange....all with a 2 year parts and labor warranty. All pricing was presented to you prior to the work being done (twice), and was approved both times by you. We always do a thorough exam of the issue(s), and then present you with options that each have the price clearly given to you from our Straight Forward Pricing Guide. Once you choose the option you want to go with, and agree to the price, we write up the order, and have you sign that you want us to proceed with the exact scope of work, and the exact price quoted. There are plenty of plumbers in the area that offer a limited time warranty, or no warranty at all. We have a 100% satisfaction guarantee, and back that up with an outstanding warranty!

I called them due to a leak in both bathrooms around the toilet. Patrick could not find the source of the leak and then did not call me back to explain next steps. My Grandmother still has an issue with no resolution. I had to call the office this morning to find out that they didn't know what the next steps were either. I've had to find another plumbing service.

Your Grandmother was on site, but you were not at the time of the service call. We checked the HVAC unit and found no issue, saw no evidence of a slab leak, and all was draining properly. We advised the home owner that we could do a pressure test, and she said she would have to ask you for approval for that. We could not reach you in a timely manner, and left with the understanding that you would call us back when/if you wanted to proceed. This is usually why we require the decision maker to be on site-to avoid issues like this. You did call back, but not to approve, you actually declined the pressure test at that time (further diagnosis was needed, but not approved). I am sorry that you are less than satisfied with your Grandmother's experience. If you had been on site, or reachable the call could have gone much differently. Please consider using us in the future if she or you have any other issues that arise....if you call in I will waive the service fee, and we will give you a Straight Forward Price for the work you need done.

I called and asked for someone to come out Friday 8/8/2014. I told them I work and to please call me about thirty minutes prior to arrival so that I could drive home and meet them. I get up Friday morning, drive all the way to work and just as I pull up to my job my phone rings and they are ready to come look at my problem. I have to turn around and drive all the way back home. :) Not their fault but maybe a call the day before saying hey your going to be our first call tomorrow so don't drive to work until we show up. I have a very nice salesman and I like his style. He was very informative and courteous, When he looked at the three, what I would call honey do problems and quoted me a price, I almost feel over. $731.00??????????? You've got to be kidding me. With the $200.00 labor credit for Angie's list already taken off of that. It was going to be more, but they discovered that Master toilet wasn;t going to need all of the work they previously thought that it would need. Maybe I don't get Plumbing............but I know this is a woman owned company and I am a woman and I feel violated!! Normally the service call fee is refunded or not even charged if you have the work completed............I wasn't even offed that option. Although I'm not at liberty to discuss the quality of work, since I'm not home yet...........I'm sure that is all good and a well job was done, but they are super high in price for the minor plumbing I needed done. Would I use them in the future??? I'm not sure

Woke up to both pilot lights being out on our water heaters (we have two). I had used Ben Franklin in the past with a deal from Angie's List and had even provided a positive review so I didn't hesitate to contact them with this issue. I called and gave them detailed information and it was understood that they would meet my adult sitter at home as my husband was out of town and I was at a work conference I was unable to get out of. I was contacted by my sitter, who relayed information from Wes M. that my water heater was shot and needed to be replaced. This was not totally a shock as our home is coming up on 8 years; however, what was the shock was that ONE new natural gas 50 gallon water heater would cost me $3494.00 - this was NOT for a tankless system, as me and my neighbor were quoted $12,000.00 for a tankless system - yes! $12,000.00!!!!!! The price list Wes wrote out on the Proposed Work Form is as follows: $2699 per unit + $795 for a circulating pump, which we already had, + $269 for expansion + $198 for permit + $299 for attic installation + $299 for auto shut off + $1430 - possibly for the unit but he didn't write out what that amount was for. This totaled to $3394.00, so I don't know why he was quoting me $3494.00. Admittedly, I hadn't researched water heaters and my husband and I had only discussed the probability of needing a replacement at some time. Needless to say, I was shocked at what I was quoted. THANKFULLY, I looked on Angie's LIst and found other plumbers offering deals. I called up one company who was charging $999 for a water heater replacement and installation and they questioned why Wes would be replacing EVERYTHING rather than just the unit itself. They said A LOT of other things that I won't get into but I called Ben Franklin Plumbing and the person answering was unable to provide me with any information on prices. I was also a bit surprised to find out that I was charged $257 for his lighting a single water heater pilot light. My biggest frustration is the appearance of price gouging in this situation. I was not there, my husband was gone and I feel as if Wes and/or Ben Franklin Plumbing was taking advantage of this situation and hedging a bet that I would just buy into his fear tactic of the problems not being just my water heater but all of it's ecosystem. Interestingly, someone called me from Ben Franklin Plumbing last night and apologized that Wes M. was new and confused on his math and that the actual cost of a replacement water heater would be $1857. But then he continued to lecture me on how they have 24-hour service, extended warranties, etc. He never answered the question on how I was quoted such an excessive price. He also offered to refund a large portion of the $257 I was charged, so I give him credit for that. Overall, I feel this situation illustrates that someone was more concerned with a sales commission rather than quoting a fair price. While I'm sure they probably would have done a fine job, out of principle, I will likely never use them again.

Nothing was done. We paid $89 for nothing and a trip to Lowe's
Description of Work: Advertised $89 for $200 worth of plumbing work. 1) Wanted $389 to overhaul toilet (I already had parts)! Told the employee NO, that I can buy a toilet from Lowe's and have it installed for less than that, to which he said, yes you can... 2) Needed to fix hum at kitchen sink faucet, told a new cartridge would be $198, then told us he would have to break the faucet to fix it. I don't think I should have to pay $89.00 when no service was performed, or performed within reason. Please assist with getting credit for this. I always go into great detail with what is needed when buying a deal, and the provider never seems to have that information! Help!
