The painting team arrived on time for a two day job. The first day was for prepping and priming, and the second for painting. The team leader had very basic English skills but was friendly and courteous. Unfortunately I was feeling terrible as I was right in the middle of a bad case of bronchitis and laryngitis so I was struggling to communicate as well. The team got to work right away and I did my best to direct them and choose a paint color. Despite telling the team leader I was very ill I was not sure he understood so it was a little frustrating when had I just gotten in the shower when he rang the doorbell telling me he needed to get in the house. I felt like better communication upfront would have allowed him to tell me to open/unlock all doors at the outset so I could rest. On the second day they returned to work and were very fast. They forgot to paint the keystones, but I was pleased that they returned at a later date to finish this as part of their satisfaction guarantee. The biggest disappointment came went I tried to turn on my A/C in the middle of a Texas summer (enough said!) after they left on the second day. They had used some type of cloth or tarp to wrap my A/C to protect it from the paint spray, however this had triggered the overheat switch to shut off the whole unit. Normally I would have been able to shake this off a bit better, but given that I had a 101 fever and was home alone, I had to wait 3 hours for the A/C repairman to come and state matter of factly, "You can thank your house painters for this." My bottom line is that the quality of their painting and wood work was an "A", but the mishap of the A/C turned that into a "B". I gave them a "C" on professionalism because there is room for improvement. My advice to Phillips is to require at least an intermediate level of English for the painting team leader, and train them to better communicate what they will need (all doors unlocked and opened, etc., ) at the beginning of the job, and be sure to train them to avoid accidentally shutting off an A/C unit!

John Stanley came to my house to do the estimate. He told me all that needed to be done and wrote up the estimate for the exterior painting immediately. The interior estimate was sent by e-mail the next morning. They were very reasonable. I was given the coupon offered by Angie's List with no questions asked. I accepted the bid on Tuesday and he told me they would call once he had checked the schedule. The next morning he called and said that if it was acceptable, the painters could be at my house that morning. I was having other work done also that day but he assured me that would not be a problem. The painters arrived on time each day. They were courteous, polite and very professional. The repair work was finished, the exterior painted and the interior painted in three days. It was amazing. The work is excellant. I will certainly call Phillips any time that I need painting done.
Description of Work: The exterior of the house (eaves, fireplace, garage door) was painted. They made repairs (replaced boards) as needed. Caulked around all the windows. They painted the family room, master bedroom/bath and hall bathroom.

I had the same rep Jeff Hahs come out both times. He was great. Patient through all my questions and obviously very knowledgeable. However, I was not considering Phillips for my roof because they were not members of all the roofing associations, and in a self policing industry and knowing nothing of roofing myself, I was weighing those memberships very heavily in my decisions. Because of all the other work I needed done, it was just a little easier to go another route for the total solution of all the work I needed.I have to say, Jeff was always super friendly and patient, never pushy, and always followed up. I have not had any work done by them but based on Jeff I bet they are good to work with.
Description of Work: I needed my roof done through insurance, some siding repairs, and my chimney totally reclad, everything painted, and gutters replaced. I had Phillips quote me the same job, on two separate occasions, when the roof initially got damaged in 2011 spring, and following 2012 spring because I had been suffering analysis paralysis and still had not hired anyone.

Our roof, which was all of 9 months old, got hit hard in the recent hail storm. Steve came out to do an estimate for repair. I had assumed that the roof would be totaled. Our skylight was smashed and everyone on our street appears to be getting new roofs. But Steve walked our roof and recommended against filing an insurance claim and having it repaired. We have used Phillips before and found it to be a very good company. Steve's honesty in assessing the damage to our roof did not come as a surprise. But it certainly confirmed our earlier sense that Phillips was a company we could trust. When the next hail storm hits, Phillips will be at the top of our list.

They did a really, really good work. The gutters are awesome. The service people who came out gives us a quote and they were very helpful and are so easy to get hold of. The only complaints that we have is that there's one tiny little spot on our back porch where when the paint started to dry, something was stuck in it and they had to pull it out.

Quoted at the same time as the quote for the exterior renovation done by Phillips Painting. Chris Walker made several evaluations of the property, running the ideas past me throughout. And suffered endless dumb questions with endless patience and well thought out explanations. Greatly appreciated, too. As it turned out the original gutter designs were fundamentally flawed in more ways than one. Chris unraveled the flow problems and came up with a very nice and simple solution. In addition we agreed to add two more downspouts in addition to the existing ones and the one added as part of one flow problem. By changing from 2x3" downspouts to 3x4" downspouts the flow through two drops were each reduced by a factor of four over that of the single original 2x3 one. He redesigned the ends of the gutter across the upper deck of the front porch and changed the way the ends are terminated by adding drops to feed the two main gutters along each side of the front fascia in conjunction with valley splashes. Extensive landscaping is to follow completion of this work and there will be three large trees added to the lot so leaf guards were added to the design. Rather than the type which slough fast moving water during a storm these are simple powder coated expanded metal mesh types meant to be sprung into the gutter but instead were to be slipped under the first course of shingles, bent along the opposite long edge, and screwed down to the outer edge of the gutter. I found this acceptable and had it added to the quote. The added cost was more than reasonable in my estimation. We selected the paint color for the renovation and the corresponding pre-finished gutter color was said to be a close match. Eventually the gutters would be painted with the next round of house painting sometime down the road so close is close enough for us. In the end it is indeed so close as to defy casual distinction. We're perfectly satisfied with the match. The formed seamless guttering, the elbows, downspouts, miter and end caps, and drops also match each other and the paint in exactly the same way. Very nice. During installation both Oscar and Dan were continuously concerned with our satisfaction and worked tirelessly to see to it, regardless of time or expense on their part which is highly unusual but of a piece with Phillips approach to customer service, at least from my experience. Impressive really doesn't cover it. During the hanging of the gutters every initial attachment was checked and double checked with a level, and every opposing end checked and double checked for the correct slope, cutting the back of the gutter as necessary to guarantee proper flow to the desired downspouts on any given run. I'd asked for the internal hangers to be placed on 18" instead of 24" centers to help keep the gutters well supported over the years even if it is overkill. It's not a significant cost adder though so it really was a no-brainer. They use passivated steel self-drilling sheet metal screws with a color-matched hex head, a nice touch considering all other installations I've run across are simply riveted. Especially the corner joints where the material is usually folded over and riveted together and then caulked along the lapped seam, something that simply doesn't last due to the stress of thermal expansion and contraction of the years. Instead Phillips uses miter caps, a formed piece that slides up behind the two corner-joining pieces, abuts the bottom surfaces, and wraps around in a contoured way, screwed to the pieces in two places each after having the internal volume of the piece filled with a perma-seal compound that forms the equivalent of a gasket between the two pieces. This sort of work requires more time than typical installations and especially those where corners are cut, so to speak. And the cost is higher because of it. But in this case you do indeed get what you pay for. There are plenty of online tutorials that talk about 0.032" aluminum being the best and what the customer should demand but really five thousandths hardly makes a significant difference in rigidity or the lifetime of the installation. Spacing the hangers at 18" makes the difference entirely moot in my opinion. What really counts are the details. In this case the larger screw diameter and thread engagement, something of importance when using Hardie Board fascia or any cement board fascia. The type of caulk and sealant used, the quality of the hangers, the manner of their installation that clamps down on the drip edge, 3x4 downspouts, care in managing slope with a level, etc. are really what makes or breaks an effective and long lived guttering system. After all, poorly done in even the slightest way will eventually lead to hidden and possibly extensive internal water damage. Ask me how I know. I'm impressed by the care taken in designing and quoting, the concern for our complicated interleaved contractor timing requirements, the exact material delivery, care and focus on an end-to-end perfect installation, and a like cleanup afterward. In addition to all these, to me, critical issues the final product is aesthetically pleasing as well, level, plumb, straight, without wavy edges or hacked up downspouts. Every downspout is a clone of any other. How they got them to look so similar is a mystery but they did. This was important to not distract from the pending landscaping and we're not disappointed in any way. My only disappointment is somebody forgot the Phillips Gutters sign for the yard as they really do deserve the recognition. For all I know there're only Phillips Painting signs. Maybe I oughta add Gutters with a bit of tape and some cardboard. :)These guys really are that good, I'd be happy to advertise their work as most homeowners probably don't take gutter design and installation as seriously as they might if it were as well explained, or in our case, made obvious by the results documented during the preceding renovation. Need gutters? Give 'em a call, you won't be disappointed. I can't imagine ever needing gutters again but if we find it necessary these guys are getting the call, no question. Thanks guys, killer job.

Needed exterior water damage repair and received a prompt response to set up an appointment for an estimate. A request was made to quote the cost to replace all exterior wood with Hardie Board material as well as installing new gutters and downspouts.. Chris Walker came out to the house right on time. Very professional and knowledgeable, he was prepared for the rain forecast for the afternoon so that he could work through it, and he did. That was the day of the tornadoes in Forney. He showed us samples of their materials including the guttering, downspouts, and guards as well as the paint they would use. He clearly explained the detailed line item format of their quote sheet as well as their warranties and insurance coverage, etc. He promised a quote and we made the proposal appointment. He called a couple of days later to ask for a followup appointment so he could make more detailed measurements of the guttering and downspout locations, which he was on time for, and completed while two other contractors were on-site. Chris was on time for the original proposal appointment and had everything promised, in great detail. We went over it line by line, arrived at an agreement, and the quote was signed for start of work at a yet to be determined date since replacement of the roof was pending a start date. Chris was extremely helpful in working with his management and the crew leads to help us convey to the roofing company what needed to be done by whom and in what order which worked out to everyone?s advantage. Excellent communication and understanding of project management on Chris? part made it all go far smoother than it might have otherwise. The start date for the renovation slipped a few days without impact to the overall schedule and for good reason. The winds were high and spray painting was being delayed at the preceding jobsite to ours. Edwin arrived as promised on a Saturday and we walked the job, checking the job description and making sure little details were clear to us both. Chris was able to help yet again with a series of emails clarifying the type and finish of the soffit material in response to my questions that arose after the landscaper?s architectural lighting consultant had been out to finish up their plans. Chris got answers through the weekend and on Monday right at eight as promised Edwin and his crew arrived. We walked the jobsite again and discussed a few more details. His crew started work and were very responsive to requests and very helpful in explaining the details of what they were doing, what they planned to do, and what the issues with the original construction were at many times throughout the project which lasted four very long days. As surprises turned up during demolition they were again very helpful in immediately pointing things out and asking for input as to how it would be preferred to proceed. Each issue was resolved quickly, professionally, and with detailed explanations. They were clear on what changes would require material not on the job sheet and were clearly ultimately concerned with customer satisfaction. I was surprised that stating that we had no problem covering any extras and overruns as needed since the repairs took precedence was an unusual occurrence. After all, it?s called an estimate for a reason. Every person on the crew was unstintingly polite, diligent, clean in their appearance and work habits, very easy to work with, friendly, and considerate. There was no significant damage to anything in the flower beds even though they?d been told it was all to be dug out for upcoming landscaping. This concern for our property carried through every day, including painting. Phillips Painting motto is ?Workmanship Beyond Your Expectations? ? often this is merely marketing noise. Not here. Not at all. If anything it?s an understatement. Seriously. Why? Well, this house was built in the mid-late eighties and without foundation damage but it has settled a bit leaving a lot of framing just a wee bit off square and plumb. Not by much but enough to make exact replication of the exterior trim physically impossible in places. Didn?t slow them down a bit although it did run extra hours for which we were happy to pay given the results. It takes skill and experience to redesign on the fly like this and they left a number of places quite literally better than new, both in quality of workmanship as well as the look of the house. Over a thousand pictures were taken before, during, and after making this demonstrably true. They weren?t hired to do remodeling although in the end this was a good portion of what they did. When your neighbors compliment the work through the day, and most every day, something more than mere repair is taking place. No detail was overlooked and no prompting was necessary for them to add extra features that have honestly taken their work beyond ?beyond?. And that ain?t hyperbole. Having worked as an assistant carpenter for a remodeling firm, albeit a long time ago, it was easy to recognize the first class skills of every single person on the crew as well as the quality management behind them. Chris proved to be an excellent source of help and communication, and took personal concern for the job, dropping by a couple of times to make sure it was going well and if we were happy with the work. Would we use them again? In a heartbeat.
Description of Work: Remove all fascia, soffit, freeze board, window boards, siding, and trim. New drip edge installed when the roof was replaced two weeks prior had to be removed first which was expected since getting this work done couldn't be accomplished before the new roof went on. Roughly a third of the 2x4s behind the fascia were replaced, some on their initiative, some on mine even though they weren't technically bad enough to warrant it but the cost now would be less than the cost down the road, in my estimation. Soffit had to be cut out with a reciprocating saw in most places due to the way the house was built. Not a bit of damage to any part of the structure resulted. Header board 2x4s needed to be replaced or placed for the first time as some of them had never been done correctly in the first place. They knew what needed to be done and did it right, nothing more, nothing less. Ventilated Hardie Soffit was installed and cut properly at the corners of the house. Excess insulation was removed without having to ask as they were concerned for the perceived quality of the vented soffit as well as their workmanship. Extra time was taken to replace porch ceilings with the minimal number of seams, the front porch being rebuilt better than new by managing to get a single sheet to bridge the width which was much appreciated. Pictures of the original details were supplied to the crew and the crew leads. All original features were not only retained but improved both aesthetically and functionally. A nice touch. Freeze board was cut to make a tight fit around the perimeter including all brick veneer features, not an easy task. And the soffit was maintained as flat as possible given the variance in the attachment points. Thin wooden trim strips were used to cover all soffit sheet joints, another nice touch. Part of the soffit at the back porch needed to be reworked due to my incorrect choice of vented versus solid after learning the architectural lighting group associated with the landscaping firm due to start work next had made the request for solid after pictures of the soffit space with dimensions were emailed. Changes to the back porch ceiling were accepted and a redesign was made to a complicated portion of the lower deck of the roof in that area making the integrity of the structure far better than it had ever been. Roofing felt was nailed up on the studs of the gable end in back prior to installing the Hardie Plank siding, something that wasn't there initially. Care was taken to get it done correctly, lapping it over in the correct direction and nailing it up with the correct 3/4" plastic cap nails. Care was also taken to get the correct level chalk line for the starter board, double checking it by having two people measure and verify. Termite damage was discovered upon removal of siding along the garage wall and I was immediately notified. The foam foil insulation board was removed and work redirected until the exterminator company's inspector could make it out that afternoon, evaluate it, and give the go-ahead to complete the siding work in that area. I requested that the insulation board be replaced and it was, correct side out, and again using the correct plastic cap nails. No shortcuts were taken, all nails that couldn't easily be pounded in were pulled. All window trim boards were cut correctly for the back porch and the trim frame of the back door was discovered to have a seam at exactly the most unfortunate line for reattaching the storm door. Examination of 'before' pictures and discussion among all yielded a very nice solution to a problem nobody saw coming. May not sound like much but it's details like this and the willingness to address them immediately and well that made the work go smoothly and without undue stress. Where there were wasp nests or mud daubers, etc. all material was removed prior to installing the replacement window and garage door header boards, an entirely unexpected plus. Satellite service was never interrupted, the A/C lines were carefully managed as was the A/C drain, hot water tank overflow drain, and the one outdoor outlet on the siding in back. The Halo fixture in the ceiling of the front porch had to be moved a bit during installation of the Hardie Sheet and one of the carpenters went up into the attic, found his way to that point, and re-nailed the fixture to the joists at the correct level. They were accommodating to my removal of nearly all insulation above the ceiling and especially around the fixture with them completing the removal as they moved up to work on the area, and without being asked. Every single joint, seam, and nail head hole was caulked well and uniformly around the house. I checked. Even edge seams, edge surfaces, etc. were carefully and properly caulked. This house was never this well sealed from the elements. The shingles were taped underneath and papered over the top, the brickwork was papered over beneath the freeze board, and the windows done twice as far down, for painting. And it was all done very carefully, to great effect when finished. Painting was done quickly and efficiently and with skill. Overspray was nonexistent, coverage was excellent, and the amount of paint deposited is more than adequate. Window frames were caulked well and properly. And it wasn't anywhere near easy given the way the frames were originally installed and the way the bricks were set around them. I think I found one place about a quarter inch square at the very top of one window that needed just a tiny bit to finish it off. Amazing. The finished work is as good as could be hoped. The color matches the paint chip exactly, the color is perfectly uniform around the house and under different light conditions, not a bit of it on the brick or windows or window frames, or roof which in itself is quite an accomplishment given the strange way some of it was originally built. Cleanup each day and after the job was complete was nearly perfect. Given the amount of work that was done I can't imagine it being any better. We're not going around picking up nails or insulation or bits of wood, etc. What's left is so minor as to be easily disregarded as a problem. And you'd have to look very closely here and there to find much of anything.

They were excellent. I was happy with their customer and followup. The first crew they sent had just gone through the training program and they didn't do a good job. When the supervisor came to check on we did a walk around and the supervisor found many things they did wrong. That crew was fired and a second crew came out the next day to make it right. I was told that I owed no payment until I was completely satisfied with the job. The second crew did a beautiful job and I would use them again.

Overall my experience with Phillip's Painting was very disappointing. The quote we recieved for painting the exterior of our 2700 sq. ft. home, detached single car garage & small shed was $7681. The quote for repainting the kitchen cabinets was also absurd. Although new to Dallas, I am a Licensed Interior Designer practicing in Florida for the past 25+ years and never heard a price so high. Perhaps they thought we were painting the neighbors house as well. We're back to the drawing baord and meeting w/ another Angie's List Paint Company soon.

I called Phillips to obtain a quote for complete exterior painting for my home after reading the great feedback from other customers who had used Angie's List as a reference point. John Stanley, who provided the quote, arrived promptly to the scheduled time. He was very professional and courteous. Plus he was extremely responsive to my requests and explained the complete process to me. Edgar and crew did a wonderful job replacing all the bad wood...my dormers and chimney were in pretty bad shape - wish I had taken BEFORE pictures! The prepwork was done with a great level of detail and made all the difference in the final paint job. Thanks to Phillips I feel such a renewed pride of ownership. The house seems like new to me. I LOVE IT.
Description of Work: My home is 20 years old and we have lived here for 10 of those years. Pretty sure the house had the original paint on it, and it definitely needed some attention! The two dormers, chimney, and front porch needed most or all of the wood replaced. There was a ton of prep work to be done aside from the wood replacement, like major caulking etc. I also had leaf guards installed on my existing front gutters and new leaf guarded gutters installed in the back of the house where NONE existed. My home is one story but outside structure is truly a 2 story. Both top sides of the house and the complete back porch area (1/3 of backside) is siding needing attention.

Disappointed that they won't cover all of Dallas when they say they cover Dallas county.
Description of Work: Company doesn't cover all of Dallas, despite listing Dallas county as their service area. UPDATE: Office manager called and scheduled a time to come and look at the job.

I contacted the company via their website email, requesting an estimate on roof repair caused by damage from a recent storm. One day later, I received a call from the company stating that they were really busy and unless I was committing to a complete roof replacement (roof unseen), they didn't have any repair technican available and had no time to do repairs. I guess I wasn't worth their time.
Description of Work: Had roof damge due to recent storm and needed inspection and bid.

I met with Christopher and got a quote and description of work to be performed. We discussed wood to be replaced and the painting process. They came out the first day, replaced some wood, sealed and cleaned. When I arrived home, I noticed that one of the boards we had discusses replacing was not done. I called Chris and he had it replaced. The next day, most of the painting was done. When I got home, they hadn't done the trim around the garage. They also only did the face of the trim rather than the face and the sides as one would expect. I couldn't understand their rationale behind that. Also, I had one window where the horizontal window trim runs into the vertical roof trim. Instead of completing the window framing, they stopped it and left a blank spot that looked very funny. After seeing this, I called Chris back, told him what I needed, took pictures and sent him details on what I would like finished. Unfortunately, I just took a picture of two window edges and said that the sides of the trim needed to be completed on "all" of the windows. Well, they completed the garage trim but only did the edge of the windows that were in the picture rather than reading that they needed to do this on all the windows. They also tried to fix the blank spot on the edge of the window, but this time that overdid the framing color. Now the window looked like it had a block on one corner rather than a blank spot. So, we repeated the call and return routine. 3rd time was a charm. I wasn't very happy with the overall experience. I would have expected professional painters to know how to do a proper paint job without having to come out 3 times to get it done. I do appreciate the professionalism of the company in forcing the crew to come out to do the job right. The C given for quality is based on the quality of job that was done prior to the second and third visit. After it was all completed, it ended up looking very nice. I would rate that job as an A.
Description of Work: They replaced woodwork and painted the entire house. There was some rotting wood facia boards that needed replacing and I asked for a two tone paint scheme. I also got a quote for gutters, which haven't been done as of yet. They are able to match their paint to the gutter colors that are available so that you don't have to have them both done at the same time.

Jeff Hahs showed up right on time for the estimate. After a thorough examination of my 31-year-old home, he gave me a detailed estimate that was easy to read and understand, showing the location of every item that needed repair and how he proposed to fix it. He gave me a separate estimate for the gutters, along with prices for optional add-ons. Six days after I gave him the go-ahead, the carpentry repairs were underway. Over the course of three days, Juan and his men worked quickly and continuously - I never saw them take a break. They kept the yard clean, carting away rotten siding and 2x4s within a short time of its removal. The young man who did the caulking even put black caulk over the white caulk that had pulled loose between a window and some brick, making the crack seemingly disappear. These people thought of everything. Jef even asked the crew to add a board along the bottom of the siding that a Weedeater couldn't damage so that the siding would last longer. As a senior citizen and single woman who is admittedly easy prey sometimes to slick sales people, I was so happy to find such a straightforward person to work with as Jeff. And I have a lot of admiration and appreciation for the meticulous, exacting repair work performed by Juan and his men, who sawed and hammered and caulked and painted to perfection. The gutters were installed three days later and they also look great. I could not be happier.

Chris came out as scheduled to give us an estimate, and it was clear that he knew what he was doing. He assessed the ground slope and roof area, calculating what would be required to collect and discharge the volume of water we could expect. He spotted a potential trouble spot due to the extremely steep roof and came up with a solution. Provided a detailed drawing showing exactly what he recommended, and adjusted it to fit our budget. Very professional process. We signed and returned the quote and was put on their schedule. Because they were busy, we did have to wait a few weeks for the gutters to be installed, and there was one rain delay. No big deal. When they came out, they did the installation exactly as promised and cleaned up after themselves. The gutters looked great and have functioned well in subsequent downpours. We have already called them back to install gutters on another of our houses. Same deal: professional, reasonably priced, prompt, excellent work.

We needed the exterior of our home painted for some time and due to the delay in taking care of it, needed some siding replaced due to rotting wood. Called several different companies from one man operations to the bigger outfits. I've seen Phillips in the advertising that comes to my house for some time and first thought they would be too expensive due to all their advertising expenses. I was very surprised to find out they were right in line with all the other bids I received and actually provided a little more for the money. They were the only ones to provide a nice package with sample colors to choose from. Jeff is the one that came out to give the estimate and he was very friendly and professional. The estimate was clearly written out and everything we talked about was included. Jeff even recommended some low cost alternatives for fixing some areas which turned out looking great. The crew of 3 arrived on time and went right to work. First day included power washing, carpentry work and caulking everything. The next day was all about paint. I had called Jeff about a concern I had with my schedule on the second day and he made a call to the crew and they were able to come out early to accommodate. They cleaned up nicely and the house looks fantastic. I would highly recommend this company and will certainly do business with them again. Don't think that the company is too big to provide competitive pricing. They are not only competitive but they have the whole thing down...you will not be disappointed.

They came early in the day to paint the stair well and did not even turn the light on. They were also supposed to repair texture work but the repair did not match at all. They also power washed the outside and left the windows open. They were by far the most expensive bid we had received. When they came out and dropped off the crew not a single person spoke english. I would not recommend their services. They did not do what they said they would. They also rinsed out their paint brushes on my front lawn.
Description of Work: I hired them to do the interior painting. They were to paint the hallway and the entry way. They were also to paint the exterior of the home.

I wouldn't change a thing. They were on time, started the day they committed to start and the experience was great.
Description of Work: Great job at a reasonable price. They added gutters to an existing system and the match was perfect. Would definitely use them again!
