The service technician arrived on time, was polite and thorough. When done he gave me a full report that the unit was in excellent condition. "Aging gracefully." He mentioned one minor issue, a fan capacitor, which he did not recommend servicing now, but said it would probably need to be replaced in a few years. My personal test is whether all of the panel screws were replaced when done. They were!

After getting several quotes we decided to go with this company mainly due to the time they spent at our house when they gave us a quote. The looked at the unit, measured the space it was to cool and listened to our concerns. Being an upstairs unit (extremely hot in the summer) our concern was one bedroom not getting enough air in the summer and heat in the winter. We have had several companies service the unit previously and could not determine why this one bedroom did not heat/cool properly. Comfort Engineered spent the time needed to access the situation and found the problem (not adequate trunk line flow and there was actually a hole in the duct work allowing heat and air to escape). Four other companies did not find this problem! The unit has been repaced and the upstairs is extremely comfortable - more importantly this one room is now cooled!

The CES technican showed up right on time, and he did a very thorough job performing annual maintenance on both my upstairs and downstairs units. He went above and beyond and took his time making sure that everything checked out. He gave me an estimate for one small thing that he found that I might want to correct, but also told me that I could wait to do it because it wasn't essential that I do it right away. I appreciated his honesty and I really feel that I got my money's worth, which was helped by getting the 10% discount they offered for Angie's List members. I highly recommend CES!

Excellent service. Called CES for estimate and they arrived date and time we agreed upon. Their cost estimate was lower than another 3 contractors for replacement AC/Heat Package. They also found some water seepage in the duct work which other contractors did not discover. After agreeing to the service/install we set a future date (3 weeks ahead for installation). CES called twice to confirm equipment and date of install. They then showed up exactly when promised and had the unit replaced in less than 4 hours. They went as far to clean up the yard afterwards, make sure our porch was clean and wore booties not to track mud into the house when working on the thermostat. Can't say enough good things about this company!

The service tech arrived on time and discussed the work that was to be preformed. After answering several questions he began the modifications to the existing system. He was later joined by a second tech that installed a in the house air return filter. They both worked on cleaning the existing air handler by vacuuming, removing the squirrel cage fan and using compressed air to clean the fan. The fan was lubricated and reinstalled. The function of the unit checked.

On first trip out, they were able to correctly diagnose and FIND the pinhole leak in our AC system. Our previous company that had installed the system had not been able to find the leak in three years. They ordered the parts. On second trip out, they replaced the heater core (under warranty). But it took labor (not under warranty) and more refrigerant (not under warranty). While there, they serviced the system.

I called CES to get a quote and Dan came by the house and was very professional. In fact, I got a sense of professionalism unlike any of the other HVAC companies that had previously come by to quote. He assessed the situation, listed to my needs and said he would provide me with a quote. I received an email a couple of days later with a precise quote. I had some work to get done before I could commit, so I contacted him a couple weeks later saying that I wanted to proceed with the job. His crew came out and completed the work just as I requested. They damaged a couple spots in the drywall that were attached to the vents, but Dan was quick to remedy the situation and make me feel good about their service. He came back out to review the job and make sure that I was satisfied with their work. I would definitely recommend them and would definitely use them again.
Description of Work: CES removed and reinstalled duct work in our basement to streamline the amount of ceiling space that was being taken up. Dan was very polite and professional and I would definitely recommend his services. His crew accidentally broke some patches of drywall that were attached to a couple of the vents upstairs and Dan was quick to offer a solution. Great customer service!

CES quote was very competitive and they were on the approved list of TVA vendors, so we chose them to perform the work. There seemed to be a lack of communication between the sales person who quoted the job, the office that scheduled the work, and the skill level of the Technician needed to perform the job properly. The Technician showed up on August 30th to perform the work and after observing him work, it was obvious to me that he was not properly trained to perform the work as proscribed by the TVA standard. After speaking with the TVA inspector to better understand their requirements, I contacted the salesperson to explain the issue and have a Technician come back out and do the work correctly. The salesperson was very cooperative and apologetic and admitted that not all of their technicians were trained in the TVA standard of duct sealing, and they were in the process of rectifying that issue. The work was eventually done correctly by CES, and we passed the TVA re-inspection just recently Overall, the salesperson was slow to respond to my calls and emails and didn't seem to understand the process for turning in all of the requisite paperwork to TVA (or he had his own idea of how the paperwork should be turned in) which made the process even more cumbersome for us. While CES was cooperative and pleasant to work with, and they willing came out to do the work the 2nd time, the whole process from start to finish was more difficult than it had to be. Some of this could be attributed to lack of TVA training for their Technicians and lack of communication between the office and the sales person who quoted us the job.
Description of Work: Duct Sealing of our residential HVAC system to meet TVA standards. We recently purchased a home and had a TVA Energy Audit. The TVA inspector recommended we have our HVAC ducting (and other miscellaneous areas) sealed which, if done correctly, would qualify us for a rebate on the cost. We obtained 4 quotes from different companies and selected Comfort Engineered Systems to perform the work. The job was first completed on 8/30/2012 and due to improper procedures, a Technician had to come out a second time and re-do the work.

I diagnosed the blower went out on our main HVAC unit. Loud squeaking and then no forced air were primary clues. Comfort Engineered Systems located part same day and installed the next morning. Technician was on time (8AM!) and finished in less than an hour. He patiently answered my questions as I tried to educate myself in an area I normally avoid (if I get involved, it means something has broken!) Great service, on time, done professionally, price fair and reasonable. You could shop around to save a minimal amount, but you can't put a price on professionalism. 4th time, I believe, we've used Comfort, three times this summer. We have two HVAC units, one for main floor & finished basement and one for upstairs. Units are 8-10 years old and the upstairs unit's condenser failed earlier this summer, then we had an issue with the main unit that turned out to be just in the breaker box. Each time, we were pleased with their service. Very professional organization with earnest and courteous technicians. I endorse them without reservation.

I called them on Wednesday because my a/c units ran constantly and the house never got below 78 degrees. I figured it was probably lack of regular maintanence...and that's what it was. He called and showed up early wearing shoe protectors and introduced himself and asked what the problem was. He then went right to work and after about 2 hours told me everything he did. When I called them I mentioned that I found them on Angie's list. When I went to pay, he had deducted the 10% off without me remembering to tell him. Kudos. CES was super professional and did great work. I will definitley use them whenever I need A/C and heat service.

Due to an appointment cancellation earlier that morning, the technician called me at my office and asked if he could move my appointment up an hour earlier. I agreed and told him I would meet him at my house. When I arrived, he was already there and waiting for me. I must note that I only live 15 minutes away from my office. Once I arrived, he went right to work on the unit. Before he entered the house, he put on shoe coverings to protect the flooring. He did this each time he entered the house, and removed them as soon as he exited. He inspected the control unit on the inside of the house and took measurements of the air flow and temperature. At the same time, he asked me if I was familiar with the maintenance of this unit, including how to clean and replace the filters. I told him I was, and he agreed the filters appeared as if they were being maintained properly. From his measurements he determined that the unit was operating fine, and the reduced cooling was probably from low refrigerant in the the system. He asked me a few more questions to confirm his diagnosis, and then we went outside to inspect the outside unit. He found there was some oil leaking from the fitting which connected the copper line from the outside to inside unit and explained to me that sometime the fittings would get loose if the unit had moved on the pad. Normally this would be the result of a strong wind. Since my unit was not bolted to the pad, he recommended I get that done, but he was not equipped or qualified to perform that task. He then added the refrigerant to the system while paying special attention to the gauges. I have to mention that I was a distraction since I kept asking him questions, but apparently they did not distract him enough to where he wasn't paying attention to his job. He then tightened up the leaky fitting while explaining to me that the oil from the fitting is a sure sign of a pressure leak. When finished, we went back into the house and he lowered the thermostat and checked the internal unit again. Once he was satisfied the unit was functioning properly, he returned his tools to the truck and we finalized the transaction. The complete job only took about half an hour. During the whole time, the technician was polite, courteous, and very professional. I never felt that he was in any way incompetent or ambivalent about the job at all, even though it was a minor task. He didn't mind me asking questions or hanging around while he perform any of his tasks.
Description of Work: The technician checked the function of my indoor/outdoor split unit, and discovered it was low on refrigerant due to a loose fitting on the outside unit. He added refrigerant to the air conditioner and tightened the fitting. He also checked all the other fittings and features to make sure the integrity of the unit was intact. After the refrigerant was added, he checked the unit functions again and made sure the temperature range was within acceptable standards.

I called and explained that I needed to have my a/c checked out, but I had a doctors appointment in the middle of the day. They worked with me to accommodate my schedule. Gary came out and ran diagnostics on my a/c. He explained what the readings meant and why it felt like warm air was blowing out. My a/c was clogged up and needed to be cleaned. Then he came inside and did more diagnostics but seemed satisfied that all I needed was to have my a/c cleaned. Gary was very professional, courteous, and knowledgeable about my problem. He followed up with me by phone a few days later, and I was happy to report that the a/c was cooling fine and I was very happy!!
Description of Work: I needed to have my air conditioner diagnosed because it was not cooling properly. I wasn't sure if the a/c had a problem or if it was sized wrong for my house. I bought the unit last year from a different company, who has since went out of business and changed ownership.

They sent John Cage (I hope I spelled his last name right) - to help us during this heat wave. He was extremely professional and polite. He offered me a lot of advice about AC units and armed me with the informatoin I need to make an educated decision about upgrading our unit in preparation for future heat waves. Our unit is apparently performing very well confisdering the circumstances (almost 20 degrees above average temps here in Tennessee right now). Thanks John and Thanks Comfort Engineered Systems for a great experience. I should also mention he wore boot covers to ensure he didn't track dirt or mark our house up with boots. Believe it or not, that's been a rare experience among service providers we've worked with and we really appreciate it. Thanks!
Description of Work: They performed a system-wide checkup for the HVAC in our townhome and provided recommendations/analysis. They also discovered a problem which was very easily fixed and accounted for about 10% loss in cooling

Overall is was satisfactory. When they put in the new unit they had to disconnect my old one. I have natural gas for my water heater and it supplies fuel for the heating. They turned it off and hooked it back up. They turned the gas on but didn't relight the pilot light. I'm sure I could have called them to relight it but I did it myself. I haven't had any problems since. They do offer an Angie's List coupon.

After Dave Bowers came out and did the original proposal, taking measurement s and photographs, I had another contractor do an estimate. I obtained a total of 3 estimates before selecting C.E.S. My brother (who is in residential / commercial HVAC business in another city), reviewed all quotes for me. He found that Mr. Bowers had quoted the wrong equipment (my unit is an uncommon downflow type, and he had quoted equipment for the more usual upflow type). My brother spoke directly by phone with Mr. Bowers and they confirmed the correct model numbers for the Lenox equipment and Mr. Bowers e-mailed me a corrected quote with equipment model numbers and specific description of the work to be done and the total installed price of $4800, although the quote was not itemized, and only the bottom line total price was listed. This was true of all the quotes, and the others didn't even include any equipment model numbers - something I consider to be unacceptably vague in the quoting process. When one of the other companies (Lee Co., one of the highest bids ) was asked about this, the answer was that no equipment model numbers were ever quoted to prevent customers from shopping the equipment around. My brother did not negotiate the price with C.E.S., and I simply chose the lowest bid from a company with a good Angie's List record, having told all the estimators to give me their best price to begin with. The installation was done on a Saturday at my request so I could be present througout, and took about 7 hours for 2 men. They started at 8am and arrived promptly and went right to work, taking no lunch break. (that meant they asked to use our bathroom a couple of times during the day, which might be objectionable to some customers). They were unable to completely finish the re-installation of the furnace lacking a piece of ventpipe (small 'elbow'), which was not a major problem since we did not need to use the furnace but we were able to use the new A/C. They returned the following Friday morning and took about 30 minutes to fit and install the ventpipe, to complete the job.The installers were polite and used shoe covers in the house, although I had put down heavy contractor's paper anyway over the floor between the door and utility room the night before to protect the area from dirt. I am not pleased with any of the companies that provided quotes, and I would NOT use C.E.S. again. In the process of removing and re-installing the existing furnace, they managed to break plastic clips which hold the access panel on the front of the furnace, and also bend the frame of the furnace so that the access door does not fit snugly now. My primary source of dissatisfaction is that the Angie's List coupon listed on the site for C.E.S. stipulating a 5% discount for Angie's List customers on replacement of a system (worth $240 in my case) was NOT honored initially when I presented the coupon at the time of payment, but I was told by Dave Bowers , that the bottom line price he quoted "already included any and all discounts, including the Angie's List discount which is the way he writes all his quotes for ALL customers, to give them the best possible price right up front". Since I had never mentioned Angie's List before, he had no way of knowing I am an Angie's List member, which of course means that the coupon is simply a sham - Angie's List members beware. Finally, after my brother who is 'in the business', had a talk with Mr. Bowers, C.E.S. decided to honor the coupon, although Mr. Bowers then changed his argument and stated that the coupon really didn't apply to my project since I did not replace a 'system' which would require the furnace to be replaced to qualify as a "system". So, his initial explanation that the coupon had already been applied to my bottom line price was untrue .However, I am sorry to say, that even though they are very polite people, and thanked me profusely for my business, and have finally honored the coupon, I would not use them again because of what I perceive as misleading/dishonest/deceptive pricing practices and a general lack of credibility and integrity in communication with the customer. The coupon on Angies List should be removed, as it is completely false and deceptive.
Description of Work: I had the central air conditioning system (indoor cooling coil, outside compressor unit) replaced with a 4-ton Lenox system. The existing system is a "downflow" type and required that the existing downflow gas furnace be uninstalled, to remove the old cooling coil, and then re-installed on top of the new cooling coil. Differences in the size of the new cooling coil required some reworking of the return air ductwork and furnace vent duct pipe above the furnace, as well as the gas supply pipe to the furnace and the condensate drain line from the cooling coil. The old system used R-22 refrigerant, and the new system uses R410, which required that the old "line set" between the outside and inside be flushed out and pressure tested before charging the new system.

Response from Comfort Engineered Systems Inc
We are very sorry that the member was not satisfied with our work. This was a difficult project on several counts. It is true that our salesman initially specified the wrong coil, however our internal QC procedure is to always review all components with a project manager before the job, so we would not have actually installed a wrong component. However, in this case the member's well qualified brother discovered the error ahead of time. This was a downflow application, meaning that the furnace sits on top of the evaporator coil. Because of this, the old furnace had to be completely removed and re-installed on the new coil. Since the new high efficiency coil was larger than the old coil, a significant amount of rework was required. Unfortunately, this resulted in some minor cosmetic damage to the old furnace, for which we are sorry. As far as the coupon is concerned, this was a total misunderstanding on the part of our salesman, which has been corrected. We absolutely do honor Angies List coupons and will continue to do so. We are proud of our record as an honest company that strives to provide quality service to all of our customers, and feel that our ratings on Angie's List supports that.
