We were tremendously happy with Midtown Hardwood. Our floors look amazing. Maybe more importantly, Carol and Bill were terrifically easy to work with. They initially aimed for the most thrifty solution possible, but when that proved impossible, they switched gears seamlessly. As our schedule shifted, they were flexible. When I forgot to check in, Carol would remember to follow up with me to ensure that we stayed on schedule. Their crews showed up on weekends when needed. They patiently painted sample stain swatches on my floor and stairs till I got the color I liked. They cleaned up after themselves. And Bill is deeply knowledgeable about wood floors. In short, I can't recommend them more highly.
Description of Work: Removed old kitchen floor, repaired subfloor, installed new hardwood (white oak) floor, sanded, stained, and polyurethaned new oak floor and old pine staircase.

We needed our downstairs wood floors and staircase refinished, and were looking to try to match the stain color as closely as possible with some new upstairs wood flooring that we had installed last year. We received two bids for the job - and Midtown Hardwood were willing to honor a very competitive quote that they had given us a year ago that was submitted as part of a broader scope of work. We selected Midtown, moved all our furniture out, and arranged to move out of our home while the work was being performed. Here's a list of positives and negatives about our experience... Positives: - The up-front contract and bid process was very smooth. The fact that Midtown were willing to agree a price that was submitted as part of a broader job was impressive, and showed an appetite to do the work - Carol (co-owner) was very responsive throughout the process, even after the work had been performed. She consistently responded the same day to queries, even at weekends - Remediation work was performed and the majority was picked up by Midtown - Bill (co-owner) is a very knowledgeable contractor, and did take the time to address other issues during the remediation process (including helping me to cut open a window that had been sealed closed during a paint job) - The floors themselves look very nice Negatives: - Our quarter-round was torn-up/ruined from the sanding process - including a bevel that had been carved into the quarter-round (inconsistently) throughout the downstairs (see attached picture as an example). We raised this issue and Bill came to take a look - he advised me that I could caulk and paint the beveled areas...however I'm not sure why it was my job to remediate the problem, and I had to purchase all of the supplies! This not only didn't fix the issue, but I ended up with the additional problem of having a paint-line on the floor where paint seeped between the carved-up quarter-round and the refinished floor. Ultimately Midtown agreed to replace the quarter-round after I shared a picture of the damage, however we now have to get the new quarter-round painted to match the baseboard (additional expense for us). We also couldn't move our furniture back in until this was resolved (over a week from the end of the job) - Our stair trim and some of our doorways had a lot of stain blotches that required painting afterwards. After we raised this issue Midtown paid for a painter to do the touch-up work on the stair trim (the worst area), but the fact that so much stain on the trim was originally deemed as acceptable was a disappointment (see attached picture as an example) - We received a call during the middle of the job informing us that an oil-based polyurethane would need to be used to match the color of the downstairs floors/stair treads being refinished, to our newer upstairs wood floors. In fairness we were asked the question, but not knowing what that really meant (and feeling that we needed to make a decision quite quickly) we deferred to the professionals and agreed to the oil-based solution. However it turned out to be a big mistake, given the fumes/VOCs that are emitted with oil-based poly, and the fact that we have three young children including an infant. We returned to our house 1.5 days after the job was complete, and could only stay in the house for a couple of hours before having to move into a hotel for two nights. My wife and children then had to stay an additional six nights at a friends' house due to the smell and concern about the VOCs (I stayed behind to keep all windows and doors open with box fans circulating air to try to ventilate the property). They were still having to spend the majority of their time upstairs 14 days later due to the smell downstairs and concerns about the fumes. In summary this was a difficult review to write, as Carol and Bill were pleasant to deal with and were responsive in addressing the issues that we encountered. If we were grading only on price and responsiveness Midtown Hardwood would receive an A...however the quality, quality control, and some of the communication during the job were poor and would receive a D, and that led to a disappointing overall experience for us (with the VOC worries compounding the situation).

Response from MIDTOWN HARDWOOD
Many issues surfaced while doing this job that could not have been foreseen during the initial bidding, (which was April of 2012). Our company should have handled the issues that presented themselves upon the completion of this job in a different way. I would like to point out however, that the refinishing process itself yielded excellent results considering what we were up against. It was unfortunate that the client did not include a picture of their refinished floors, which came out beautiful. We would like to explain a few issues we faced during this process. The flooring that we sanded was a ½ inch, (not ¾ inch) floor that had a very minimal wear layer. Those in the business know that it is very difficult to sand a floor like this. The floor itself was not level, sloped toward the wall in certain areas, and had a lot of movement, which resulted in the inconsistent scoring on the quarter round. Unfortunately, there is really no way to see those problems until you actually start working on the floor. The client is absolutely right in that we should have caulked and painted the damaged area ourselves and we apologize sincerely for that decision. It is easy to forget that we have much more experience with this process than the typical homeowner. The matter could have been corrected within a few hours had we done the work ourselves initially. Instead, we had to replace 256 linear feet of quarter round at an expense of $384 to our company. We also paid an outside contractor $100 to paint the staircase where the stain lipped up on the wall. We do make it a point to inform our clients on the front end that there will be touch up on the trim work because of the way we have to apply the stain. This is the standard operating procedure within the industry. There was obviously miscommunication on this point. As far as the oil based polyurethane goes… It was clear from the onset of the job that it was a priority to match the existing pre-finished floors that were installed upstairs. The only way to come close to matching the color and sheen of those floors was to use an oil based product. For most companies in Memphis, applying oil based polyurethane on every job is the norm. We are one of only a few companies that even offer a water based product at no additional cost to the customer. While we understand that there is a stronger odor when using an oil based poly, we have no control over how the client will react to that odor. The customer knew and approved of using oil based poly in order to match the existing floors. After the initial complaint about the odor, we immediately came to the house to assist with air exchange which helped to disperse the smell. We returned to the house on several occasions during the week and did not notice the strong odor that would require the family to seek alternate living arrangements. We also suggested several other natural remedies to assist in absorbing the odor, (putting out baking soda and charcoal, per our distributor’s advice). We are unaware if they tried any of these tips. While this has been an unfortunate situation for all parties involved, we felt that our company addressed the customer’s needs in a timely way. It is very rare that Midtown Hardwood faces end of the job issues like this. Over the past10 years that we have been in business, the overwhelming majority of our clients are thrilled with our work. We will continue to strive to be the best in our business and trust that our work will speak for itself.

The floors were far too dark and in need of some replacement in a couple of places where damaged had occurred. The work was excellent. When he had to go above the original budget he called us to come to see why. His suggestions about what would work for appropriate stain were spot on. His recommendation of an individual to do some tile work was totally right. Carol in the office was just excellent. I would use them again without hesitation.

Everything went according to plan. They arrived when they said they would and did what they said they would do. We made some major changes to the bath after it was underway and they were most pleasant about making those changes. I think highly of this company and would use them again in a minute. They are easy to work with and are most efficient.

Absolutely wonderful. They were the most professional group I've ever worked with. Arrived on time and finished exactly when they told me they would be done. Had absolutely no fear leaving them in my home to work while I was gone. The floors came out wonderful. For days I didn't want to move the furniture back in. I just wanted to admire the beauty of the wood. I had them put on an industrial finish (which cost extra so that is why my price is higher) because I have dogs and I didn't know how a regular finish would hold up to the dogs running and sliding on the hardwood floors. You can't tell there are dogs in the house from the floors I've had done. I can hardly wait to have the other rooms in the house refinished by Midtown. They are absolutely wonderful people!

In total there were 4 men who worked on the floors. The installers (Joey and 1 other man) were great! They were on time and the floor looks wonderful. When I noticed a chipped board on the first day in a visible area, he told me it would not be visible when they were done, but quickly said he would replace it if I wanted him to and he did. The other team who put down the polyurethane were also prompt and did a wonderful job. Carol who sets the appointments and Bill who met with me to give the estimate were also very professional and pleasure to work with. I highly recommend this company.

First, I sent an email requesting an in home estimate from Midtown Hardwood and Tile around May 1, 2013. I received a phone call from Carol and she set me up with Bill to come to my house to take a look at my room. He came over and measured, helped me lay out a vision of what we wanted it to look like and etc. Once Bill took the numbers back to the office, I received an estimate back from Carol the next day. However, that was well above my budget so we had to go back to the drawing board. She sent back two other options for me and I ended up going with the prefinished hardwood. Next, once we agreed to the budget, Carol set up the delivery of the materials and I must tell you they were done in 1.5 days with over 500sq ft of room. It looks AWESOME. Once we get hardwood over the entire house I will definitely give them a call again. They were on time and did everything they said they would do from start until finish. I even left them in my home unattended. So they are very trustworthy. You did not have to leave any keys with them, they locked the doors while they were in the room working so no one else could get in but my wife and I. Give them your business, they will work with you, are trustworthy and will give you the best bang for your buck. No shady business here!!!

Midtown did a fantastic job on my floors. They weren't in the best of shape with some spots missing poly. They really could have been totally refinished, but we just moved in and wanted to see if a screen and coat could get us by for a while. All the other companies I called kept trying to get me to refinish the floors and didn't listen to what I wanted. This company listened and told me what to expect once completed. I was happy with that and decided to do the screen and coat. They were flexible to my time table and got the job done on time. The 1st day they sanded the floors and applied the 1st coat of poly. At this point I was only going to go with the one coat, but once I saw how good they came out, I decided it was a no brainer to have them apply the 2nd coat. I called them about doing to second coat and they said no problem and were able to fit me in. They came on day 3 and applied the 2nd coat. The floors came out FANTASTIC...BETTER THAN EXPECTED!
Description of Work: Midtown Hardwood and Tile screen and coated 1109 sq ft of oak flooring in my home. They used two coats of Oil Based Poly Satin finish. One coat was $665 but we decided to go with the second coat for only $167 more. They did a terrific job and the floor are wonderful. I called at least 4 other complanies for quotes and Midtown was the best price and had great reviews.

Bill came out promptly after we called his firm and asked for them to provide us with an estimate. Another company was good enough to come out and gave us an estimate, although costing almost twice as much as Midtown Hardwood & Tile, and a third company recommended on Angie's List never returned our phone call. Bill's two-person crew arrived on the scheduled day and immediately went to work. They carefully sanded the entire area down to the natural wood and then we selected a stain from a host of colors they offered. They immediately applied the stain and then put down the first coat of protective varnish. They returned the next day and put down the second coat. The sanding machines all had bags to collect the dust so there was absolutely no mess. The finished job looks beautiful. Bill's workers were polite, extremely efficient, and hard working. Bill visited with us twice during the job and he was super. We highly recommend Midtown Hardwood & Tile.

We were extremely pleased with the workmanship and professionalism of the entire team at Midtown Hardwood. From start to finish it went smoothly and efficiently. Where there were issues, they were dealt with pleasantly and without hassle. Although it was a huge hassle for us in logistics to get everything out of the way, the workers made it all worthwhile by their good attitudes and responsiveness to our needs. The finished product is perfect. We could not have asked for a better job. We will not hesitate to refer our friends and family to Midtown Hardwood in the future. We LOVE our new floors. My overall experience with Bill and Carol was wonderful with just a few opportunities noted. I submitted a request for proposal through Angie's List and immediately got an email response from Bill's wife, Carol. She was very friendly and said Bill would make a trip out to my house for an estimate. Bill arrived on time and went through the details of different options for me. He also got the measurments of the room and recommended a certain hardwood based on my taste and budget. I then worked with his wife Carol on a quote. She and Bill were very flexible and considered different ways to fit the overall quote into my budget. I must have emailed back and forth with Carol 20 times before we were both comfortable with the agreement. She was very patient with me and always spent the time necessary to answer my questions with detail and care. When the day came for the installation, Bill and his team were 15-20 minutes late. Bill was very apologetic for getting lost on the way; however, I was frustrated that he had already been to my house before and should have noted the directions. One other thing that frustrated me was that Bill had said during the estimation that he would do some inlaid decorative work around the fireplace that would make it look very nice. When the installation was completed, his team did not do the extra decorative work we discussed, nor was I notified. I had to reach out to Carol for an answer on why the decorative work wasn't completed. Bill said the foundation was not quite level enough around the fireplace and would have made it risky to do the work. I would have liked for him to have told me during the estimation the decorative work was dependent on the shape of the foundation, or I wish he would have contacted me during the install to let me know it couldn't be done. When I arrived home looking for the decorative piece around the fireplace, I assumed it was an oversight. Those opportunities aside, the floors look beautiful and the fireplace still looks wonderful! Additionally, Bill said his team would be done in two days and it only took one! My wife was/is very happy.

This was my second time using them to put my wood flooring in. I have recommended them to others and will continue to do it. I used them summer of 2011 the first time. Will use them again if I do more.

Description of Work: They refinished three rooms and patched several places in a 100yr old midtown home. I would tell everyone "this is who you want to use." They were the best contractor we have dealt with on a renovation. The reasons to use Midtown Hardwood and Tile are 1. they are on time, 2. did not leave a mess of saw dust an inch thick in my house, 3. there is no trash in my finish, 4..they offered me a huge selection of stains and put them down two for final selection 5. didn't slop stain all over the baseboards,(our painter even ask who they were) 6. they patched in an old floor furnace hole perfectly as anyone could have in a 100 yr old home 7. they are just all around pleasantly nice people to conduct business with. 8.THEY HAVE INSURANCE CERTIFICATES. You can keep looking but they are the ONES in my book. I will them again, they can count on it. Do call them, Don't look any more, your worries are over

We recently bought our house - built in 1986 - and decided to replace the flooring before we moved in. We replaced the flooring throughout the house: in all rooms with the exception of the kitchen, upstairs game room, sun room and baths. The difference in our house was astounding. Bill and his crew worked very hard to ensure everything was done beautifully, paying close attention to detail. Bill engineered careful solutions to problem areas. Originally it was estimated that the project would take two weeks, but the discovery of a significant leak in the chimney (which dampened the floor), deep irregularities in the slab (which had to be leveled) and scheduling conflicts made it take longer to complete. Bill helped us choose the best quality materials. Once complete, the house sparkles and feels incredibly solid. We couldn't be more pleased with Midtown's performance, the quality of materials and workmanship and the resulting look. We would hire them again.
Description of Work: Tore out existing damaged engineered wood floor downstairs and carpet upstairs, replacing it with red oak. Leveled slab in a few places and replaced upstairs particle board sub-floor with new 1/2" plywood. New sub-floor was glued and screwed to prevent future squeaking. Installed 2100 sq. ft. of solid red oak 3.25" planks upstairs and 2100 sq. ft. of engineered glue-down 3.25" red oak with heavy (5/8") wear layer downstairs. Finished all floors in place with two coats of polyurethane.

They did a great job. Their finished product was very good. We were very pleased with it. Their price was very good. I have some hesitation when it comes to quality because the finish in the living room was a little dull. It was not matched as well in the living room as on the stairs. It could have gone better. I think when you put something in, you should have a complete finished project. They put the stair tread in but they left me with painting to do. I do not think that that was the case when I first got the quote but I was okay with it. I think they probably quoted me with that in mind and that may be just my misunderstanding.

We had a very positive experience (as positive as it can be having your floors replaced while living in your house!!). From the beginning, we were not sure what we would need to do. We had been told by a couple of contractors that the floors could not be refinished. We do live in midtown in a 100+ year old house. When Bill arrived, he confirmed the same story but did face the problem differently. His goal was to get the floors back to a state that would make them sustainable and restore them to as close to the original as would allow this. We ended up selecting a mixture of nail down oaks with a walnut boarder around the room. We also did natural slate in the kitchen. As with any jobs of this size, we faced hiccups (tile was delayed for example), but the team was able to take it in stride and did what was needed to complete the job. The process was surprisingly not as dusty as we expected - there was some dust, but it was very controllable. We felt comfortable leaving them in our house for the day while we went to work. Many days the team worked 7 to 6 to try to get the job done in the window we had planned! And between Bill and Carol, they thought of everything. We were able to turn the job over to them and not be concerned with the small details because they were all taken care of!! The floors are beautiful, and we are now working on scheduling a second job with them.

Bill arrived at my house when he said he would, and he was extremely gracious in sharing his vast knowledge in what needed to be done to my hardwood floors. To my delight, the majority of the floors did not need to be completely refinished. The majority of the floors needed to be resurfaced (screened) and re-coated, and only the master bedroom and closet needed to be completely refinished. The crew finished my job in two days, and I could hardly tell the guys had been there at the end of each day....no dust left behind! Carol was wonderful in scheduling and communicating with me every step of the way, and she worked with me to get me "worked in" to their very busy schedule. This was very important to me because my furniture was in storage as I was trying to get some projects finished in my house before I moved in, but I also did not want to have to pay for another month of storage. My floors are beautiful! Now that I am moved into my house, everything looks absolutely lovely. I am very happy with the work Midtown Hardwood and Tile did for me, and I will definitely use them again. I am planning on using them to replace my kitchen floor soon.
Description of Work: Refinished approximately 300 square feet of hardwood floor and screened and recoated approximately 1100 square feet of hardwood floor.

The experience was wonderful. I am positive that the hard work put in by Midtown Hardwood & Tile will be held in the value of my home years in the future. If I ever needed floor restoration for a property in Memphis again (or a different room in the same property) I would immediately call them rather than assessing different contractors as I have found one that does work of high quality and deals straightforwardly with me.
Description of Work: I am a first time homeowner, and bought a home built 100 years ago. Some time in the 70's the previous owners had taken some beautiful pine flooring (at the time considered to be an inferior wood compared to the oak floor downstairs) and covered it with 1 layer of linoleum, a 2nd layer of linoleum, and finally a layer of carpet in two bedrooms -- and drenched a third bedroom in paint. Bill came out (exactly at the appointed 8am) with a small crew and stripped the floor coverings, filling holes where nails had previously been, and used multiple grades of sandpaper to grind down and capture the dust of the paint. The floors looked remarkable when they were laid bare, and even better once the polyurethane coatings were added. Now instead of a slapdash second story we have a carefully restored, beautiful hardwood floor. My fiancee, an architect/historical preservationist by training, absolutely loved the attention to detail. The second inspection revealed additional work that needed to be done, but Bill immediately explained the alterations in his plan, how it would affect cost, etc. This was a much preferable experience to a second contractor we had consulted when looking at the market, who looked at the task and wheezily declared that he wasn't sure what the cost would be and that he preferred to work easier jobs in recent homes. If you have an older home and want careful, restorative attention to detail, I could not recommend Midtown Hardwood & Tile highly enough. Carol was a breeze to deal with administratively and was a huge help, making my impression of this company so much stronger. She helped ensure that every detail was carefully chosen (the gloss on the sheen was confirmed by email to ensure we got what we wanted, service updates were provided every day, and due to busy schedules a key was dropped at my sister's for safekeeping.

I'm quite pleased with with our experience. Firstly, the owner was a pleasure to deal with and knows his stuff. He seems to enjoy educating the customer. Midtown came highly recommended, so I was expecting corresponding prices. But they were quite competitive, even beating out a few others on Angie's List. They also helped us find a good quality product at less than what I was expecting to pay. A couple of niggling issues arose and they were dealt with. That's why I decided against the fly-by-nighters and generic stuff after all. Things happen, and you just want someone to handle it when they do.
Description of Work: Installed roughly 600 sq/ft of engineered hardwood in kitchen, dining area, and living room.

I felt their response was immediate and appropriate. When I called to let them know that someone else was doing the job and why, they were professional and very supportive.
Description of Work: I made an email and telephone contact with the company on a Friday afternoon. By Saturday afternoon I had an email response that stated a telephone call to set up an appointment would be made on Monday. The call was received Monday AM and an appointment for a " meet and discuss the project" was made. This was an entire renovational and partial repair/replacement of a 6800 sq. ft, house with hardwood floors throughout. After a walk through and discussion, we left Mr. Marshall alone with his tape measure and inspection. We received an email bid within 24 hours that was competitive and exacting in detail. The only reason we didn't secure them for the work is because other flooring work provided by the contractor was done, and a relationship with on site workers had been made with the company doing that work. We will definitely consider Midtown Hardwood for future projects and recommend them to those who have restoration work that needs to be done. They couldn't have been more available or succinct in their discussions and bid material.

Called Carol, which did a awesome job of being the office contact person through the whole thing, to set up a free quote. Bill arrived as scheduled to ask questions and to take measurements. A few hours later Carol sent me the quote via email and told me to call her if there were any questions. We scheduled the job for about a week later. They were here when they said they would be and got the job done in a few days. We've had a few issues with a little creaking due to our concrete slab having 2 major cracks in it and Bill and his crew took care of those issues and the floor looks beautiful. We will be doing the upstairs in the near future and we will be using them again.
Description of Work: We had a new hardwood floor installed.
