Ken and his crew at Coopertown were exceptional! They called when they were on their way (within the time frame they had promised). They showed up ON TIME. Upon arrival they checked out the job, set up and covered my hearth so there would be no damage. As they went along, Ken explained to me what he was doing, and if any additional costs were going to be incurred. He asked for my approval on those items, before he moved forward. After he completed his inspection he came in and told me everything he had found in a clear and concise manor. His crew cleaned up so that it looked as though they had never been here.
Description of Work: He came in and cleaned out the chimney, capped our gas line, and inspected the entire fireplace and chimney.

Our 2 year old Peterson gas fire logs turned off suddenly and would not light. The company that originally installed these logs were backlogged and has yet to return my call to schedule a service. After finding Coopertown on www.csia.org - Chimney Safety Institute of America and reviewing Angie's List and the company website, I decided to give them a call. The receptionist was very professional, upbeat and immediately took my contact information to have a service tech call and troubleshoot the problem over the phone before initiating a service call. Ken called immediately and mentioned that with the holidays they were backed up and wanted to make sure I had a fire. He began walking me through lighting the pilot and then the logs. They would not light. I replaced the batteries in the remote control sensor unit. The logs would still not light. Ken wanted me to check for debris, cobwebs or dust over the oxygen intake valve. This required me to turn off the pilot, wait for the area to cool down and remove the logs which I was willing to do. Ken asked that I call him back with any questions at anytime. I took a picture of the log set and carefully began removing the logs being careful and placed them in front of me in the same way. They are like a puzzle and only fit in their designed groves and notches, so it was very easy to remove and reset. With the pilot off, fireplace cooled and a flashlight in hand, I could see lint and dust debris covering the intake valve just behind the pilot house. I carefully took my vacuum cleaner and cleaned off the area in and around the oxygen intake valve. I carefully reset the logs, started the pilot and it did not start. I called the company back who informed me that Ken was out and would call me back shortly. He called back in less than 15 minutes. Ken walked me through the lighting procedure one more time and presto... the fireplace started. He asked me to be sure that no flames were contacting the logs after they were reset. During areas of troubleshooting, Ken took the time to explain how the sensor worked and the safety features to be aware of with a gas fireplace including cracking the damper on our ventless logs, proper ventilation and even the dangers of combustion from chemicals in new carpets, floors or drapes. I will call Coopertown in the future for any fireplace cleaning, repair and inspection. I am very pleased with the prompt, courteous, professional and patience of the receptionist and Ken.

This was for a post sale home inspection. They cleaned my chimney and offered a free inspection in which they wanted to say that my fireplace & some other chimney features are out of code ( our home built in 1988) . They said if we do not want them to write that - we need to sign off saying that we denied the inspection. Either would mean a few thousand in repairs + scare the new buyer . We did not want to not disclose this to new buyer as that would not be ethical. So I spoke with my realtor, a contact at my city office and another at my county office . All said that if that was the case all the homes in our neighborhood ( with hundreds of homes built in 88) would be out of code. And that such things are grandfathered in new codes to take into consideration not very recent constructions. We were advised to see the help of another qualified company - of course that meant we paid 2 times. They did not see any issues.

Response from Coopertown Chimney & Wildlife Services
[Member name removed] Thank you for having Coopertown out to sweep and inspect your chimney. I am truly sorry that you received an inspection report you did not want. I realize there are a lot of rules and regulations and confusing jargon involving chimneys and home sales. I appreciate this opportunity of discussing “how a certified chimney sweep is required to inspect a chimney”. There is only one nationally recognized organization which certifies chimney sweeps. It is the Chimney Safety Institute of America (i.e. CSIA-A nonprofit educational organization). Many states require that a chimney company be certified by the CSIA to operate in their state. Other states require that you also be a licensed general contractor (Coopertown is both). Unfortunately, in Tennessee anyone can simply proclaim that they are a chimney sweep and start to work today without any training or experience. Shelby County has several good chimney service companies. Anyone can go to www.csia.org and view a current list of all certified chimney sweeps. If a company is CSIA certified it must follow all of the National rules and regulations and follow a code of ethics. Coopertown is and has been continuously CSIA certified for over 30 years, we are also licensed contractors in Tennessee and are insured and bonded. Before January 1st of 2000, chimney inspections could include or exclude what ever a chimney service company wanted. One could inspect the vitreous clay tiles or not, the chimney crown or not. It was up to each company to decide what was to be inspected. This led to many problems for homeowner’s and chimney companies alike. In 2000 the National Fire Protection Association changed all of that. A strict set of instructions were published in the new National Fire Protection Association’s 211 Standard which listed three distinct inspections (i.e. level one, level two and level three). Each level of inspection has very specific details of what must be inspected and what is not included and when each level of inspection is required. (Please see the back of your Coopertown work order to read these rules concerning chimney inspections). This has been accepted as the “industry standard of care” in all 50 states by the U.S. Courts and chimney companies are legally required to perform these inspections. If a chimney company is not certified it may be completely unaware of these rules. After being an instructor for several national chimney safety organizations for over 20 years, I am still amazed at how many chimney service companies are unaware of how to properly inspect a chimney and have no formal training in how to interpret the codes, how to sweep and inspect a chimney or how to properly repair a chimney. If a fire occurs or any other problem arises related to a chimney, the last chimney company to service that chimney is required to produce this written inspection to the homeowner’s insurance company. If the written inspection was not accurate, the chimney service company is liable for any damages or injuries which occurred. The discussion of the 1988 smoke chamber parge needs some clarification. Before 1988, smoke chambers were not required to be parged. But they were required to be “laid with cross bed and push filled mortar joints” (i.e. mortar completely filling the areas between the bricks and also fill the hollow cores in the bricks – no voids allowed) (this was the Southern Building Code Congress International building code which was in effect at that time). Because this was difficult and almost never accomplished and was causing house fires, the rule was changed in 1988 to require smoke chambers to be parged. (This was passed in October of 1988 at the annual Southern Building Code Congress International Regional meeting.) Your chimney did not meet the old rule because it contains voids. To repair these voids requires the smoke chamber to be parged. Your chimney also had other areas which needed repairs. This is why your certified technician explained that he could not give you a written inspection and omit the parts you did not want him to include but that he could write that you declined the inspection. I will be happy to return and meet with anyone who failed to see the defects in this chimney and personally show them the problems and photograph the problem areas. Again, I understand how confusing this can be. I apologize for any misunderstanding or inconvenience. I honestly believe that what appeared to you as “unprofessional service” was actually very professional service to the standards of the CSIA and the NFPA 211 Standards. I am happy to return personally and perform any follow up inspections, video scans, meeting with other chimney sweeps or anything else that you think would be helpful. Thank you again for the opportunity to explain this situation. Please do not hesitate to contact me if I may assist you. Ken Robinson President KR/jlp

The cost was a surprise, but was competitive with similar providers. The gentleman was very professional. He also put a priority on cleanliness, ensuring there was no dust or dirt introduced into the room. Also, he "saved the nest"! Took the baby birds out to the back yard and they successfully left the nest about a week later!!

It was a bad experience. First it took me a while to actually catch up with him to have him come and look. I caught up with him and scheduled a date for him to come and he never came, never showed. I called him that day and he never returned my call. I've never heard from him again. It was a totally bad experience. The work was not particularly complex. I wouldn't recommend him. It was very unprofessional not to call. The price he quoted was pretty reasonable; I was comfortable with it.

(Member name removed), We always appreciate and encourage customer feedback. Having been in business for over 35 years we understand how important our reputation in the community is. Immediately upon seeing your review, I started to research your work order. I found no work order in your name, or for your address. I then went back to the schedule and searched the entire month of June and July and found no appointment for your name, or your address. It is my belief that you may have accidentally confused us with another company. If it was indeed our company we would very much appreciate any additional information you may be able to provide such as a work order. Thank you, Ken Robinson

We live in an older home in Midtown. I had heard from neighbors that squirrels and roof rats can invade during the winter months. As a precautionary measure, I called Coopertown services and was provided with a service call that same day. Our service technician, Joey, was very professional, listened to my concerns, and quickly got to work. While inspecting the house he took photos of areas of possible ingress of pests and suggested sealing these to prevent invasion. It really helped to have photos of the things that I never would of have seen! It turns out there was a pretty large area along the roof where squirrels or some other critter had chewed a hole into the attic! He explained service options well and did not apply any pressure on me whatsoever to make a decision that day on whether or not to proceed with service. I called a few days later and scheduled my service. The lady on the phone went out of her way to help accommodate my schedule (made a few phone calls, switched around jobs) and had my service scheduled quickly. When Joey returned, he worked for a solid 4-5 hours and even removed a few branches that were scraping along the roof without me even having to ask him to do so. We were very happy with our service and hope that it prevents squirrels from coming into the house this winter.

The first time they came, they were extremely cheerful. The second time, they had quite an attitude problem. They didn’t want to come. They had put the concrete in the wall, and when it fell out from the fire, they had to come back and repair it. They did a good job though; I just had to ignore it. I am going to look on Angie's List and see what other people it has got.
Description of Work: Coopertown's Mastersweep Inc did chimney repair for me. The fireplace was fixed. He had to reattach the mantle to the wall. When I lit the fire, it fell out. So he had to come back again and do that over again.

Response from Coopertown Chimney & Wildlife Services
First allow me to thank you. I appreciate your business and I appreciate your review of my company. I am very familiar with the Chickasaw Gardens neighborhood and Coopertown has many good customers there. Next, let me apologize to you for any inappropriate attitude that any of my employees exhibited towards you. I was pleased you were happy with the actual work. When a service company goes on many jobs everyday and does so for 35 years it is assured that some of the work will require a return trip. When we do have to return, it is the customer who has been inconvenienced, not the company. Our service technicians and the office staff are trained to set up the return trip with a polite and apologetic attitude. As I said, I am pleased we did good work and the one area which required a return visit was also corrected, but I do regret that you were given the impression that we did not want to return and make things right. As the president of the company for the past 32 years I understand that the company’s survival is absolutely dependant on the trust and good will of its customers. We train and instruct our employees not only on the technical information and techniques but also to be courteous and respectful and we enjoy a healthy and happy reputation in the community between us and our customers. When on the rare occasion I do hear of a negative review such as yours it gets my full attention. I want to find out what went wrong and make efforts to ensure that it does not happen again. Your review is valuable feedback that my company wants and appreciates so we can maintain our high standards and again I thank you for taking the time to inform us of this. If you would not find it inconvenient I would welcome a phone call or email directly to me so that I might gather more exact information from you about the specifics of the return visit to be sure I made the correct efforts to correct the problems. Coopertown was very professional and courteous. They made several trips to my house as we had to let the sealant dry. They didn't get the chimney caps exactly correct the first time but promptly took them down and fixed them to look exactly as we had discussed. i would recommend a picture to be sure everyone understands what they are making (this was mostly my fault for not communicating). They painted them for free and they look wonderful. i am very happy and would definitely use them again.

I had started a fire in the fireplace, and the smoke did not go up the chimney, but entered the room. The next business day I called about having someone come out to look at the chimney. The appointment was set for the following day. I asked if they could call about 30 minutes prior to arrival, as I work about 20 miles from home. The person who was going to look at the chimney called and said he was 30 minutes out. He had just pulled up when I arrived home. They two men checked the fireplace, as well as the attic the make sure there where no problems. They suggested the chimney be cleaned (they said it wasn't overly dirty, but cleaning it would help to some degree). He also gave me a list of things to try in the future (opening a door or window a crack when starting a fire, etc.) and told me to call him if the problem re-occurred (he was willing to start a fire before he left, but I had to get back to work. They were there for about 35 minutes and cleaned up after themselves. I will use this company again if I have any other fireplace issues.

I had used Cooperstown Chimney Sweeps before, so I called them to inspect the chimney when my wife noticed a couple of wasps had gotten into the house. Phone conversation was very polite and professional. Ken arrived at the house at the scheduled time. He inspected the chimney and recommended the installation of a wasp guard. He also told me that the chase cover was rusting and holding water. I approved the work and Ken ordered the parts. Two days later he was back to complete the job. Very friendly and professional people. I would recommend them highly

The fireplace cleaning uncovered acracked fireplace floor which the Chimney sweep showed me in detail. He suggested that that the floor needed to be replaced. He did not pressure me to do so immediately and seemed willing to let me decide when to have the repair made. I asked for a cost estimate which seemed high but fair. Coopertown made arrangements to return at a specified time to make the repair-- they came back at the exact time took a little over an hour to complete the repair. And the repair was done exceptionally well-- just like a new fireplace. Very Clean as well. Great service!

Ken and his crew were clean, professional and their work is of the utmost quality. He was able to rework a coal-burning fireplace so that I can install efficient vent-free gas logs. They gutted the masonry from the inside of the fireplace and removed the inner hearth down to the old wood framing. They replaced the old brick with high-performance thermal mortar and new fireplace bricks that can better withstand the heat of a vent-free gas log set. They also put high-grade thermal insulation in the flue to prevent heat from traveling up the unused chimney and harming wiring I had installed for a TV above the fireplace. He was able to do all this work while protecting the irreplacable antique tile and the cast iron surrounding the firebox. They used drop cloths throughout the room to contain the mess and took all their construction waste with them.
Description of Work: Converted existing masonry fireplace in a 100 year old home to an insulated vent-free firebox.

Ken was about thirty minutes late for our appointment. However, he had called to let us know. When he arrived, we found him to be quite personable and knowledgeable. Ken got right to work. During the process, he spread tarps to keep our carpet clean and did a great job of cleaning up.
Description of Work: Inspected the fireplace and chimney. Repaired stuck damper, swept chimney, replaced outer liner screen and painted top cap.
