After previous good experience(s) with this company (and negative experience with others), I called Custom Renovations on the off chance that they might also work on water heaters. I wasn't hopeful that they would since is a minor plumbing issue, not what I think of as a "renovation". I was pelasantly surprised to find that they could also do this job. Mark was prompt in coming out to inspect my old heater and provide an estimate for installation of a new one. He let me know that they don't actually keep these in stock, so I would need to select one from Home Depot or Lowes and then let him know which one I wanted. This was actually good because I could then go online and choose exactly what I wanted, read reviews on all the different models. After I had one picked out, I just gave him the model and sku number, and he went to the store to pick it up. I did need to wait until the next morning to have it installed because I was worked into his already booked schedule. This was okay and the wait was well worth not having to deal with a company I wasn't familiar with. Once they arrived, it only took about an hour for the job and haul away my old water heater. There isn't much more I can say about this since it was a small task for them compared to larger projects The price was more than fair, and there was no markup on the heater itself. I trust these guys and will be using them again soon.

Was a fairly long and involved project. Overall, happy with results. As with all major projects, issues arose that slowed or altered progress. Mark was always quick to intervene and make situation right. Estimates were very accurate.
Description of Work: Finished approx 2500sf basement, to include exercise room, media room, kitchenette, bathroom, bedroom, and storage room. Installed vaccum system, wiring for media room, flooring, and altered AC to dual zone system. Fairly high level materials, ie nicer crown molding, cabinets, bullnose drywall, solid doors, etc.

Initially contacted him about the leaky roof on 12/20/2010 and the other 2 projects. I stressed the emergency situation with the roof, while I explained that the other 2 projects were lower priority. Almost 2 weeks and still no estimate. In the meantime, more water is leaking into the house, damaging structural wood in attic, insulation, ceilings, walls, floors, etc. Called him the final time on 1/1/2011. He said he's been too busy. He didn't even seem to remember coming out and inspecting the problem on 12/22/2010 since he wanted to know where I lived and when did he visit. On my final call, he did offer to send a roofer out as soon as he could, but, by that time, I had lost all confidence in this contractor. He's had some good AngiesList reviews, and if you're willing to wait in line for a while, he might work out alright for you
Description of Work: Contacted to repair leaky roof, in addition to 2 other follow-on projects (exterior painting and drywall). He promised to get an estimate back to me soon.

For this job I got three estimates. One didn't show up and the other was too flaky. Mark Steck, the owner of Custom Renovations, came in a timely and professional manner and looked over the job. He said he would get right back to me with the estimate. Here he needed some prodding. It was a few weeks before he got me the estimate. The date on the estimate is 10/21/10. We decided on CRC and it was 11/9/10 when we signed the contract and paid $1000 down. As for the contract, he had two other jobs on it: another gutter replacement and another ceiling repair. We declined those two because they seemed a bit pricey to us. The ceiling repair that we let them do, we thought, was a bit pricey too--$425--but we agreed to let that one be done. Some time went by and I called Mark. He said he was just going to call me (or maybe it was the other way around). I asked him where I was in his que. He said I had just risen to the top. I asked him if I was the squeaky wheel and he said yes. We laughed. He has a great sense of humor and is fun to work with. He seems to be honest and forthcoming. I appreciate that and we kidded around a lot. We had confidence in Mark and his workers and we understood and didn't mind when things took a while to get done. He was good about calling and letting us know he hadn't forgotten us. It was really a stress-free experience. So his roofing team came and it took two or three days with rain days in between. As I said before, they gave us a confident feeling about their work. Time went by and his ceiling repair man came. This turned out to be his son, Julian, a very competent and delightful young man. He took a couple of days and did an excellent job. The last step was the gutter and downspout. It was done very well using our old copper gutter and downspout that had fallen and was a bit bent. They couldn't find the right "piece" to hold up the gutter and Mark told me he would make some strips out of copper scraps he had to hold up our gutter. That took a little while. But finally it was all done. It took him another little while to come for the final payment. I kidded him about not being anxious to get his money. So from the signing of the contract to the final payment was exactly one month--12/9-12/9/10. All in all not bad timing.
Description of Work: Custom Renovations Co., 865-274-8845, (1) completed roof repair, including chimney flashing and tile replacement; (2) repaired and reinstalled copper gutter and downspout; (3) repaired and painted water-damaged ceiling inside. Our roof tiles were the original (bulit 1925) and rare to find. The owner found them and offered to bring us as many extras to have on hand as we wanted at his cost. It turned out, I believe, he actually charged us less.

From beginning to end, the workers that the owner uses were always courteous, prompt and hardworking. They were always here when they said they would be. There was one occasion where an emergency took them a different direction one morning so they had to reschedule but they alerted me to the problem as soon as they could so that I could make other arrangements. The electrical panel was not in the original quote but as they worked with the outlet relocation and addition, it was discovered that our panel is not allowed by code presently, and has not been allowed since the early '70s. Therefore the job had to go a little longer than originally thought due to the removal and installation of a new panel. The entire job was done to our satisfaction and we would (and plan on) using this company again in the future.
Description of Work: We had a partial basement renovation which included old flooring removal; installation of new flooring; installation of plumbing that tied in with existing; electrical work which involved the addition of outlets; breaker panel switch out of outdated (and no longer allowed by code) panel; outside door removal and replacement which involved some carpentry to make the passage airtight; removal of old porch carpeting on front and back porches and the application of stain and paint.

All of our contact with Mark Steck, the owner of the company, was pleasant and professional. The work was performed within the time frame promised and done with quality and attention to detail. His workers were reliable and kept the site cleaned up as they worked. We were very satisified with the job and already have plans to have Mark and his company do several other jobs for us. In an industry where reliability and quality workmanship is rare you can feel confident in hiring this company for all your home renovation needs.
Description of Work: We contracted with Custom Renovations to remove several layers of roofing from our house and detached garage, install new roofing, install 4 windows, new gutters, add an additional outdoor electric outlet and raise a low hanging wire that crossed the backyard.

Mark came out to check the roof which was leaking during hard rain. During his inspection we discussed the fact that it appeared the company I used for the addition did not frame the roof properly, and this was the cause of the roof leak. I also asked CRC for bids on blowing insulaton in the attic and replacing the gutters which had not drained properly since the addition was done. Mark worked up a bid which he emailed to me. After I had gone over the CRC proposal and had received bids from 2 other companies, Mark came out and went over the contract in person and set up a time frame for the work to be done. I signed the contract the first week in September. The first crew came and blew in the attic insulation. They were very professional. The job was finished quickly and cleanly. I appreciated the fact that the men were so respectful and friendly to my 83 year old mother who was there to let them in while I was at work. There was a wait of several weeks before the roofing crew arrived due to the weather, but the foreman called several times to keep me updated on the schedule. As we feared, when the roof was removed there was a good bit of damage due to the poor construction job done 2 years ago by another company. CRC had to replace parts of the roof from the rafters up. This caused additional cost. When the additional damage was found I was contacted immeditely and informed of options and the fact that there would be additional cost. Even with the weather delay and extra roof work, the job was completely finished by the end of October. The gutter crew even worked the weekend to get everything finished. All 3 jobs were completed in a very professional manner. We have had no leaks and the gutters drain properly. I will use Custom Renovations on future projects.
Description of Work: Rebuilt a poorly constructed, leaking roof over a 2 year old room addition (unfortunately didn't use Angie's List for that job) Replaced gutters which had been damaged or poorly rehung when the previous work was done. Blew insulation into the attic space over the whole house.

Weather, previously ongoing contracting jobs, and problems with the paint company getting the correct color mixed were the main glitches with this job. However, Mr. Steck stayed the course, making sure that every small detail was taken care of. I don't know when I've seen a contractor so conscientious, even though it may have cost him some time and money of his own. The job took a little longer than any of us expected, but we are very pleased with the result. I am very appreciative of Mr. Steck's and his crews' professionalism and would recommend him to anyone who needs this kind of work done.
Description of Work: One exterior wall was rebuilt. Previous repairs to this wall were not done properly, causing the wall to rot. Mr. Steck and his team re-framed the wall, replaced rotted wall with new wood and siding. The interior of the new wall was insulated and new wallboard was installed. Old stucco on the foundation was removed, and replaced with new stucco. The entire exterior of the house was painted. It is not always possible to know the extent of needed repairs upon initial inspection. There were problems that were not known until the work had started. Mr. Steck was very fair in working with us and giving a reasonable price on the repairs. He is an excellent contractor and all his employees were polite and hard-working as well.

The call turned out to be more involved than a simple estimate, yet he still did not charge for the visit. He went above and beyond the call of duty. In addition to the estimate, he also took the time to write a seperate and very detailed documentation letter which describes, point by point, the work that was done incorrectly, damages to my home, as well as contracted work that was not done at ALL by the other company. He did all of this to help me, at no charge, even though he was not yet hired to complete the work. He still has not yet been hired to complete the work, as the case is still in dispute with the original contractor. I checked "no" in the box regarding whether or not they perofrmed services, only because they did not do any "paid" home repair services at the time. That said, Mark Steck did, in fact, provide an invaluable service to me when he took the extra time to write the letter. The entire situation with the 'other' guys had left me feeling entirerly mistrustful and fearful of dealing with contractors. Custom Renovations has gone a long way to help restore my trust in home repair businesses, and I would not hesitate to call them again. Mark Steck was helpful and honest from the start, even when he did not need to be.
Description of Work: I contacted Custom Renovations because I needed estimates for several jobs to be redone following a (more than) horrific experience with another contractor. Mark Steck responded quickly. He not only provided an estimate for the jobs I requested, but he also did a thorough inspection of the jobs I had contracted to be done by the other company.

The tile on the floor and walls was more complicated than anticipated, due to the design. Also, I demanded perfection. The contractors were professional when I knew they would rather just shoot me. They were always pleasant. They had to be creative with modifying a vanity that I purchased that didn't fit against the wall. They really worked their hearts out--I don't think any of us had ever thought a small bathroom would involve so much sweat and labor. There were some re-do's, but they worked to make it right and make me happy. At the end of the project, my husband and I were very pleased. Again, Rick and Justin get kudos, and Mark is very appreciated because he didn't throw up his hands and give up. (BTW, this was the third project we have used CRC for)
Description of Work: Guest bath: gut. Remove tub, install tiled shower. Remove carpet, install tile. Remove existing vanity, toilet and plumbing, install new. Install tile from vanity to ceiling, new mirror, new light fixtures , ventilation system for shower, multiple shower heads and fixtures in shower. Paint walls. Remove swinging door and install pocket door.

Found CRC on Angies list, contacted six different companies, four looked over the job, and we got only two quotes. CRC's owner (Mark) paid better attention to our needs and wants. Plus they had a better quote for the job. He and his crew showed on time and worked thru rain delays. Due to budgeting, we replaced siding, a door and insulation on one side of the house. The crew worked thru 100 degree heat for two days and got the job finished on time.

I found Custom Renovations on Angies list. I called Mr Steck about 2 weeks ago about our problem. He said he was booked up for a couple of weeks but would call us when he was ready. He called today and said that he had to be in our neighborhood so would it be good for him to do the work. I said yes. He was there and finnished in minutes. He did not charge a travel fee since he was in our neighborhood. It was a simple job and he charged us accordingly. We are very pleased.

I had called 2 other companies to come out, but did not hear back from them. I then got on Angie's List and found Custom Renovations. I believe he came out the same day and figured an estimate for me. He also suggested a few things to improve the performance and look of the gutters (deeper gutters etc). C.R. came out the next week and completed the job. I was very impressed with the response I received, and I love the gutters.

Flashing repair was very well done. Last rain or two noted improved drainage. Chimney was sealed with caulking repair around base. Leak found and repaired in roofing. No leaking as of last rain. Interior damage to roofing(wood) sanded and stained. Given condition of wood only other option was replacement. I opted for stain. Very difficult to cover damage. I feel they did as well as could be done with the damage. They found a perfect color match for some J channel in my siding which had been damaged by some squirrels. They did a quick and very good replacement.
Description of Work: 1)Flashed between the house and attached deck(required some deck removal and reinstallation). When the deck was originally built it was not adequately flashed leading to rot. 2)Sealed around chimney and repair of leak in roof.3) Repair and refinish of roof leak damage.4)replaced some J channel in my siding which had been damaged.

The workers arrived and commenced to construct a lattice over the existing roof (which was deteriorating, though not leaking). Being the First Day of Summer it was un-comfortably hot and the crew worked with all the diligence they could sustain. The following day the heat continued and so did the work . I was impressed with the both the qualifications of the employees and their attention to performing tasks as cheerfully as possibleThe workers arrived and commenced to construct a lattice over the existing roof (which was deteriorating, though not leaking). Being the First Day of Summer it was un-comfortably hot and the crew worked with all the diligence they could sustain. The following day the heat continued and so did the work . I was impressed with the both the qualifications of the employees and their attention to performing tasks as cheerfully as possible. Concern for Safety and respect for each employees task was evident in the conduct of every stage of my project . There were no 'job site' injuries though due to the steepness of the roof the relentless heat the danger of in-attention to any detail could proven hazardous. The workers Mr. Steck has chosen to represent his firm are in my experience the best I could have hoped for . They respected me and my property . They would be welcome to perform any future job .
Description of Work: As the result of several consultations with Mr. Steck we determined the best choice for my deteriorating roof was to have it covered with metal . Although initially more expensive than shingles the durability factor was my primary concern. The plan that evolved was simple to explain though somewhat difficult to perform due to the steepness of the roof . First, a lattice 1/2 X 4 inch was attached to the existing roof .Then the metal sheets were attached to the lattice frame . Due to the age of the house, some settling had taken place and establishing a `square' frame was challenging in some instances. The problems were dealt with efficeintly and the finished product looks very good to me .

Came to our house to measure five existing windows. Windows were custom-built on order from a different vendor, then were installed over the course of twelve days, with a few delays due to weather (we didn't want to have open holes in the house during recent heavy rains.) Mark was very responsive. It took a few days for us to find a time to meet to discuss what I wanted to have done, but he was at the house exactly when scheduled. The quote was good - there weren't any questions about what was going to be done. We had a couple different crews come out, one for the decking and one for the other work. Both were prompt, very polite, and professional. My wife was particularly happy with the decking crew's courtesy. I had no problem leaving the crew doing inside work and just having them lock up when they were done. Mark made sure everything was done well, and had a few things redone that I hadn't even noticed. Everything was done without any extra costs, and really quite quickly. Unfortunately, the chimney repair required more parts and effort than in the initial quote, so I'm having Mark take care of that in a second job. I expect to call him again as we move through more of the house and fix it the way we want it to be. Update Feb. 9, 2011: I just realized I never updated this. After submitting the report Mark came back one more time to check everything over and figured out a way to fix the chimney without extra charges, so we never had to go back around on that. Since then I've hired him for more jobs, with the same excellent results.
Description of Work: We had our deck enlarged and the existing decking/railing replaced, a new hose spigot installed, a new circuit added for outdoor lights, a bathroom exhaust fan installed, and a chimney leak sealed up.

I contacted this company regarding replacing an element which I ordered for my oven. He was very kind and told me it wouild be a few days before he could get to it. I contacted him again the following Monday to set up a time for him to come out. He was very polite, gave me his card upon entering and promptly installed the element. He sent someone to repair a faulty electrical switch who was equally as nice and prompt.
Description of Work: Replaced a heating element in the oven. Replaced wiring in light switch.
