The work performed was very professionally done. We had originally asked for a bid on putting a roof over our deck and screening it in. That proved to be too costly. However, Mark did find that several of the deck joists had fallen, which presented a potentially dangerous situation. It did take about two weeks to get the work scheduled, but once scheduled, it was completed quickly and professionally.
Description of Work: Repaired fallen deck joists and deck boards.

This company apparently has a lot of business, which can result in a very long wait for work to get started. The quality of the work made up for the delay, however, so it is worth waiting for them. I do recommend that you keep in touch with them (the squeaky wheel gets the grease). The workers were very professional and took all the proper precautions to cut down on the mess (drop cloths along every indoor path they took, cleaned up after themselves). The only real delays were due more to our house, and they seemed to take that in stride. I will be hiring this company again in the near future.
Description of Work: Chimney repair: Pressure washed chimney, tuck point chimney. Repaired chimney flashing. Painted chimney. Repaired roofing nail pops. Electrical: Installed new GFCI outlets in two bathrooms, including new circuit run from breaker panel. Installed new exhaust fans in both bathrooms, also with new run from breaker panel.

Over all, things went well. I like Mark very much and he is very professional. Some of the crew were unfortunately unreliable. Basically, the workers would be involved in several job sites, which I understand is not unusual, but they would not come when expected or would be hours late without communicating this to us. Because of this, the estimated completion time got stretched out. When the workers were present, they did a good job and worked very quickly and cleanly. The only other issue we had was the forgetting of some finishing touches. The trim plates in the shower weren't caulked, there was no testing to see that the grout sealing was effective or that the newly installed shower head worked (it leaked). To the company's credit, they quickly addressed these issues when I brought it to their attention.
Description of Work: We had water damage in our tile shower down to the sub-floor. The company removed the shower, rotted sub-floor, repaired the walls, and replaced some of the copper pipe that was leaking at the sink area. They put in a new tile shower, new linoleum, and re-installed the toilet and sink as well as repaint the walls.

I got contractor's name from Angie's list and felt very confident going into it, since he had so many great reviews. I hadn't even planned on getting other estimates. He came over to look at our bathroom, tracking dirt in with him. Although he was polite enough, he didn't ask detailed questions about what we wanted. I told him we don't have extravagent tastes, but wanted to upgrade our bathroom and replace the existing shower with a nicer corner shower. Instead of looking at the pictures that I had ready to show him, he started talking about installing a prefab corner shower from Lowe's. This was not what we had in mind at all. I told him we wanted something nicer and larger than that. He informed me that the glass door alone would cost $1200. I don't know if he somehow thought we couldn't afford the work, or what. He took some measurements and discussed more ideas with me. Most of my ideas apparently weren't very good. He left on a pleasant note and said he would email the estimate to us in the next 2-3 days. Ten days later, I still hadn't heard from him, so I called his cell phone and left a msg. It is now several days later and he still hasn't responded. I understand that he is busy and has all the work he needs, and if he had just told me he didn't want the job, I would have respected that. Right now, I just feel like maybe we dodged a bullet.

Very well done. Extremely professional. So far, all the workers that have come were very courteous and trustworthy. They go a long distance to clean up after themselves at the end of each work day. They check up the following day to see if all work was satisfactory.

My daughter, Melody, who lives in the Chicago area has used Angie's List for lots of home repairs in the past three years. She and her husband have been so pleased with their Angie's List choices, that I was convinced Angie's List would be the best choice for me even though that meant going outside of the regular providers being recommended by my insurance claims rep. Although I had to wait quite a while to get the work started with CRC first because I was ill and then upon my recovery, the CRC team was already very busy, I am glad I consulted Angie's list and used Mark Steck and CRC. I hope to use CRC for future projects as time and money allow. I especially appreciated Mark offering me a senior discount as I am a widow in my late sixties trying to maintain a large Farragut family home on a limited income. I also appreciated Marcus and Justin doing business with me and becoming my clients. This is a professional group of men whom I found can be trusted to do what they say they will do - when they say they will do it - for the price quoted and do first quality work. I look forward to using CRC for my next home project and I am pleased to recommend them. I have had an absolutely horrible experience with another Knoxville home repair contractor so I am especially appreciative of the good work of Mark, Marcus, Justin and Heath at CUSTOM RENOVATIONS COMPANY.
Description of Work: Due to a upstairs water line bursting, I had to have about 40 feet of downstairs family room and kitchen ceilings repaired and repainted. Fortunately I was home when the incident happened or the damage would have been so much worse. Additionally I had a water damaged foyer ceiling repaired and repainted, shelves built in the family room, and brick steps repaired. The upstairs bathroom wallpaper was removed, walls repaired and repainted. A missing stairway handrail was also installed. I was happy that Mark Steck, CUSTOM RENOVATIONS COMPANY owner, suggested putting in new "anti-flood" hoses in all 4 bath rooms and both kitchens plus adding easy new "quarter turn" shut off valves which hopefully will prevent any future water disasters. Mark's sons, Justin and Marcus work with him along with my favorite person on the CRC team, Heath, who built my beautiful family room custom shelves.

This company is very professional and they do things right. I have used them several times. The workers are friendly and helpful. I have recommended them to friends and neighbors.
Description of Work: My sister moved in with me in May 2010. She decided to put her bed downstairs in the family room/basement. Then we decided to put a toilet in so she wouldn't have to climb a flight of stairs in the night. I have an unusually large garage, so we ended up puting a toilet, shower and bathtub in as well as a kitchenette with stove, dishwasher, microwave and refrigerator. Also she has a washer and dryer. There are also a couple of small storage closets. Also the garage was insulated, drywalled, painted, and new lighting was installed as well as a larger water heater. The floor was stained. Hickory cabinets were installed in the kitchenette and the tile flooring from the family room was continued into the kitchen and bathroom areas. The basement and garage had a water problem after a hard rain so a french dsrain was dug across the front and down the sides of the house. The next day came a Noah-like rain and the drain worked perfectly. Extra electrical lines were run and another circuit box was installed as well as ceiling lights and two ceiling fans.

This was the last of a series of projects we contracted with Mark Steck and Custom Renovations in the fall of 2010. Lots of odds and ends were tacked on to the major project of building a handicap accessible ramp out of composite materials to the back of the house and pouring a concrete sidewalk connecting it to the driveway. Once again Mark found the perfect sub-contractor to pour the sidewalk. The "B" for professionalism for this phase was due to one dead battery that my 86 year old mother had to go into the freezing cold to give a jump and the lack of clean-up as the crew hurriedly finished the project on the last day. But these are minor complaints compared to the tremendous amount of work done on this house throughout the fall. Mark is on my speed-dial for the next project that needs tending to.
Description of Work: Accessibility ramp built from composite materials, concrete sidewalk prepared and poured, storm door replaced, window and foundation vents replaced, chimney's inspected, chimney caps built and installed, grading and replanting the yard after applying top soil, rotten siding replaced, dryer vent replaced, misc. odds and ends

This was a huge project affecting every system in the house. We had an old water well that had been out of use since the 1960's and wondered if it could be used for a geothermal heat exchange system to heat and cool a large old house. Once again Mark Steck knew which subs to call. He knew the company that had installed more of these geothermal systems than anyone in East Tennessee. Our well was tested and passed. Mark's crew removed the massive old concrete well top that had been there since the house was built in 1938, another subcontractor installed the pump and return, Mark's crew dug the trenches and the plumbers laid the pipe into the furnace room. It took the HVAC sub two days just to remove the old monster furnace. Two days later our new Climatemaster Tranquility 27 system was up and running providing clean, cheap heat to a big old house. Mark's crew re-graded and reseeded our yard. Several return trips worked out the bugs in the new system but we are very, very happy that we made the change and we could not have done it without Mark's help.
Description of Work: Replace old gas/electric HVAC and water heater system with new, geothermal HVAC & water heater, remove gas service.

This was the first phase of a large capital improvement project for my Mom's house built in 1938 (she has lots of what the appraiser called "deferred maintenance" to tend to) and we have been very pleased with final results from Mark Steck and his crew. We had a bit of a communication issue however right off the bat. We paid a $7K deposit for this first phase of work and Mark said that the porch would take "3-4 days" to finish. When I called the following week to see when the work would be scheduled I found out Mark was "out of the country" and my heart sank. He had not mentioned that he would be gone and I feared the worst. It turns out that the long-scheduled mission trip to Africa was legit and Mark was only gone for a week. The work began under Heath's supervision (Mark's second in command) and even though the porch wasn't finished for 6 weeks it did get done and was done well. One major theme will recur throughout our reports on Custom Renovations: Mark finds and hires great sub-contractors. The guys he brought in to repair our old, moss-covered, broken and leaky slate roof were absolutely terrific, Mark found matching slate tiles, all the broken ones were replaced, the rotten decks were fixed, chimneys flashed and copper ridge-cap fashioned and installed. Just finding someone who can work on slate roofs seemed to be an impossible task for us. Mark not only knew who to call but made sure they did a good job for us and we could not have been happier with the result. We decided to continue hiring Mark for more major projects and those reviews will follow.
Description of Work: Slate roof cleaning (pressure wash) and repair, fix/replace and paint rotted wooden frame on screened-in porch and re-screen, repair and level slate sidewalk, clean (pressure wash) and re-point large marble stone house and road-side stone fence and pillars.

This was the second contract we signed with Mark which included our "while we're at it" add-on list (new handrails on porches, repaint mailbox, new address placard, etc.) and to cover the additional costs to repair roof damage discovered after the original work began. Other than one funny incident when a young man pressure washing our roof needed to be rescued from a cherry-picker that had run out of gas, all this work went off without a hitch. It encouraged us to move into a bigger project with Custom Renovations. More to come.

Called Mark and reached him directly on the first call. Set an appointment for the following week. He called back later in the day to move the appointment time which was fine with us. He was late arriving but called and let us know he'd be on the way. Arrived, looked at problem with gutters and set about to repair them. He was professional and charged a fraction of what we expected him to charge us. We made sure to get his card and he will absolutely be the first person we call for any future work since he does so many varied services. Very pleased. So glad we found him.

We purchased our house in 2002. We are the second owners. The first owners poured a very nice 40 foot by 15 foot patio behind the house. Since the house faces the Southwest, during the summer, the patio is too hot to use between noon and 8 PM. We decided to put a roof over a portion of the patio, and add some ceiling fans so we can use the patio more. After doing some research we decided on a ?shed roof? design. We interviewed 6 contractors and got estimates from 5 of them. We chose Mark Steck and Custom Renovations Company. He has high ratings on Angie?s list, and was extremely easy to work with. We signed a contract with him on September 22, 2010 to construct the porch, install fans and lights in the porch ceiling, and in my office. At the time he suggested it would take 10 working days to complete the work. The project was not finished and final payment made until November 29, 2010. In between we had to wait through two inspections by the County Building inspector, one of which resulted in the need to cut pieces out of the patio and pour thicker concrete footers for the columns supporting the porch roof, and the second resulted in the need for a very large cross beam to help support a cantilevered portion of the roof. A sickness epidemic put down most of Mark?s work crew for a week. We also made the decision to go ahead and replace all of our roof shingles, in addition to the area of the roof being replaced by the new shed roof. The fall was very rainy, and many working days were missed due to the weather. Mark?s work was very good. He ran into a few things that he handled without additional charges to us, such as re-routing the chimney for our gas-fired fireplace. He also replaced the siding on one side of the house that clearly needed doing for a reasonable add-on to the price for the project. I don?t feel that the delays were Mark?s fault, and in the end the work was terrific. Since the weather was exceptionally cold from late November on, we have not yet had an opportunity to use the patio porch but are really looking forward to warmer weather now! I would recommend Custom Renovations Company to anyone who needs a major home improvement. They are not the cheapest workers, but are really good at what they do. Mark is very easy to work with and can do just about anything.
Description of Work: Custom Renovations built a shed-type roof over our existing concrete patio, about 35 feet by 15 feet. They had to remove old roof line to make the roof blend in with the existing roof, which they did perfectly. They installed 5 support columns under the roof and had to cut the exisitng concrete pad where the columns were to stand and pour thicker concrete for support. They installed a ceiling under the roof, and they installed two ceiling fans under the new roof and connected the fans and lights to switches in our kitchen. They had to move the chimney for our gas-operated fireplace so that it came out an adjacent wall and did not put fumes under our new roof. They replaced all of our roof shingles with new dimensional shingles. They replaced a lot of vinyl siding within the construction area, and managed to get very close matches to the exisitng siding. They hung a new fan in an interior office. They also tighened up older vinyl siding that had begun to move apart on the house. They cleaned everything up spotlessly.

Mark is great to work with. He came by promptly to go over the work so he could prepare the estimate. He and I discussed some other options, like upgrading our countertops. The estimate is clearly broken out so we can see what each part of the job costs. In this case we decided not to do countertops. Mark and his crew then came exactly when they said they would on three separate days to do the painting, interior, and exterior work. Every time they are professional, polite, and leave the house as clean as when they came. A bonus for us - Mark devised a way to repair our kitchen sink installation with a bad countertop cutout (the builder's fault, not his) without replacing the countertop. The door rot repairs also turned out great; you can't tell where the repair was at all. The flashing between the deck and the house was also repaired to make sure we don't get water problems later on. As with my past experience, Mark & Custom Renovations are responsive and easy to work with. I can't recommend them enough.
Description of Work: Had Mark & his crew paint our 2-story foyer, upstairs hall, and stairwell. Also repaired rot on two exterior door moldings, reflashed deck attachment to house, and repaired the kitchen sink installation from the original builder's mistake.

There were about ten things that they did. They were great. We had a lot of repairs around the house because we were about to sell the house. Mark Steck is the owner. I took him through the house and described what we needed done. He took about a week and got back. I had almost given up, but he got back with a very detailed list of the jobs and the breakdown of the price. So I went with him. My experience with them was very good. He was very organized and detail oriented. His subcontractors were all very good. You can probably get the job done for cheaper, but not better. So the quality of their work was very good. He is a busy contractor, but he was good with the details. It was not sloppy at all.
Description of Work: Custom Renovations Co put up some drywall and painted it about a year ago. They completed a job that my husband started and didn’t know how to finish the drywall. They did some repair work in a shower and the drain. They replaced some rotten wood in the decking.

Mark and Heath started work in August and wrapped up in January. They stared with electrical, insulation and dry wall which was completed quickly. They had about a 30 day gap where not much was done and then got back on it with a full crew. Next was moving an exterior door, installed the bathroom tub and tile and all doors. Nice job matching what was already there and fixing what my plumber screwed up! They moved on to installing a new exterior door and did a great job finding matching stonework, trim and paint. They did a great job finding a staircase and treads at low cost and made it look great. Overall they did a great job finding materials, making recommendations and fixing what other contractors screwed up. The only complaint is they had a gap in the middle where not much was done. They also were late a few times and worked extended hours to make up for it. Overall first class work.

I decided late in December I wanted additional insulation in the attic and wanted it done before the endd of the year to get the tax credit. I called Mr Stec and he came out promptly to give me an estimate. After inspecting and measuring he left and a couple of days later he e mailed an estimate. I discussed the estimate with him on about the 28th and asked if he could do the job that week. He said he could squeeze us in on the 31st. Even though I thought the price was a bit high I appreciated that he could do it quickly. They came out on the 31st and did the job as promised and all appears well.
