Workers called before they came and when they arrived they covered everything to minimize dust. The covering didn't always work so we had lots of dust throughout the house. They went about their work professionally and cleaned up at the end of each work day. I would certainly use this company again.
Description of Work: Removed porcelain tile floor and installed laminate floor. Removed old light fixture and installed new can fixtures. Installed vent hood and associated ductwork to vent to outside. Plumbed new sink and installed faucet, spray and disposal. Relocated electrical outlets and switches to accomodate soapstone backsplash. Installed under cabinet lighting. Ran two new home runs from panel for microwave drawer and attic vent fans. Painted walls and ceiling.

I have had a problem with water leaking in my basement even after he completed the job. He gave me a warranty and I have contacted him several times and he has not resolved my issue. One of his employees told me that he thinks he has taken on more than he can handle. I also emailed him for a quote on windows and he did not respond. My house was supposed to be on the market but I had to take it off the market until this has been fixed. I have also had to hire another company to come in and its going to cost me another $5500. He said he thought the gutters were not handling the rain and he took a look at the gutters but those were not the problem. Update: It began fine. Then the rains came and so did the problems. I began a complaint resolution process. The company responded. But I felt that their facts were inaccurate. All I have to say about the experience is I have a written warranty for 1 year but it doesn't appear that He is going to stand behind His word. So to all of the subscribers of Angie's list get everything in writting. It will be the only course of action You will have.
Description of Work: I hired this company for basement waterproofing. Originally I thought he did a great job but we started having problems and he hasn't returned my calls since.

Response from Custom Renovations Co
We had an original contract estimate typed up for $8630.00 to complete the client’s work to his specifications. This contract contained 9 line items intent upon correcting a drainage issue at his property. Due to financial reasons, the client decided to only have 1 of the items performed for the price of $2890.00. The client was informed that this would not correct the problem, but he decided to take his chances, knowing the contract would not be completed in its original scope. During our time at his home, we evaluated a few problems that we brought to his attention: 1. Water drainage from the road above was being sent towards the house. 2. Rock landscaping with a footing around the front of the home was trapping/damming up the water. We suggested that these rock landscaping beds be removed. 3. When heavy rains came down his gutters with leaf guards would allow the water to cascade over the tops of the gutters and pour straight down. 4. When we exposed the foundation to hook up the gutter downspout, we discovered that there was no water proofing on the block foundation. 5. We noticed a drainage hole which went under the HVAC concrete pad and we corrected the holes in the foundation. We took care of the 1 item on the contract that the customer wanted performed (installing a French drain 6 feet deep x 12 inches wide at front right side of the house). After this solution, we came back for free and gave the customer rubber membrane for one section of the front of the home. We hooked the downspout to our French drain and removed the leaf guard on the section of gutters of the house for free (taking care of item #3 above). We installed a small block wall to divert water from the HVAC unit and filled in the drainage hole under the HVAC for free (taking care of item #5 above). We finally advised the client that the foundation would need to be exposed all the way to the footing. The foundation would need to be water proofed and backfilled with gravel. He declined to pay for additional work, so it was not done. We also re-graded the entire front and right side yard to slope away from the house and install a wale to remove run-off; this was free (not in contract). The client was also advised to replace his 5” gutters with 6” gutters due to overflow, which he declined. We went back to try and satisfy the client at least 6 times and personally spent more than $8,000.00 in an attempt to rectify the problem. The client reported on Angie’s list on March 21, 2011 that he was very pleased with our work and happy with his interaction with our company. We never heard from him regarding any residual issues. He emailed us on November 13, 2011 requesting that we call him regarding some other estimates with no mention at all of his drainage. Then, one week later, on November 20th we received another email from him stating “You know what, don’t bother calling. In fact don’t ever call.” We feel that we did everything we possibly could to resolve this issue with the client.

Bid the job in timely manner. Set a date to do the work about a month out since we were traveling. Crew showed up the day specified with proper materials. Completion took about 8 days rather than the 5 expected, as several members of the crew didn't show every day. Very good work ethic when on the job. Liked that they staged removing old roof & replacing with the new so they didn't have to mess with tarps. Removed trash daily. Power washed areas of pavement discolored by the old roof refuse. Extensive painting of trim & cedar siding was partially done by sprayer. Took several attempts to be done properly. The bid was under the next closest bid & within the insurance quote. I liked that this company performed in a timely manner, that the crew managers continually asked my opinion on how things should be done, that the bid price was the billed price, that they did everything they said they would do, and that the end result was superior. All this was done after the area had a severe hail storm and demand for roofing work was extremely high. I highly recommend CRC.

I contacted them but I did not end up using them. The quote was within the ballpark of what my insurance was going to pay. I didn’t choose them because they wrote in the contract that payment was due upon request. When I questioned them about that, they said that it was standard and that’s what they did. I told them that I they could take all the money upfront and not do my house for 6 months or a year, and I was not comfortable with that, but they told that that’s just the way they write contracts. They seemed professional for the most part of the quote. We were having email problems, but they returned my calls. They were pleasant when I talked to them. In terms of professionalism I found their contract bad.

The company told me that they could only consult with me in January of 2012. While I understand that the company is busy, exterior doors are an important part of my house and I cannot wait two months just to get an estimate. When I asked if they could suggest another company, the answer was short and simple, "NO." I was disappointed with the lack of customer service the company showed.

Sorry, we are in high demand and simply cannot take on every job. We used to refer other contractors until people would hold the referred contractors shoddy workmanship and complaints against us. We are busy or many reasons and if you can wait for us, you might be happy as well.

This is part of an ongoing repair of the April 2011 hail storm. When I returned home on Monday I found that more of my repairs had been completed! I had beautiful new guttering and downspouts, and they are a perfect match! I was amazed that he had been able to find the exact colour! Then, when I went through the gate I was met by a deck that looked as though they had just built it with new wood! This company is great! My deck looked like it had been destroyed after being beaten by the hail...now you cannot tell it had gone through the turmoil ! Thank you, guys! You folks out there will hear more as we progress!

My home was damage by the hail storm last April. An estimator came out and I had checks very quickly. I got on Angies List and liked what I saw about Custom Renovations. Mr.Steck came out within 2 weeks of my first contact, which I was impressed with given the amount of damage within 100 miles! After I consulted with him I realized I should have contacted him first. I asked him to please take over, and he did. The entire job is: roof, gutters, windows, screens, garage doors, gate, and deck.... So far the roof is done! And the rest should be forth coming...He as every other contracter is swamped with work! I was in line for my roof when we had a hugh weekend of rain and I found out that indeed I did have leaks! I called him that Monday and within a couple of days they squeezed me in and took care of the leaks... From there the roof was finished!.It looks great! I will keep you up to date on each part as it is done!

Furnished exact job cost estimate, far better detail and accuracy than competition some of whom still have not submitted firm bids. Went exceptionally well relative to qualty of work, professionalism and prompt completion of work once they did some catching up on back log of storm damaged roofing work. Gave a 10% Senior Discount. CRC is bonded, insured and highly reliable. Without requesting same was furnished copies of Insurance coverage (General, Workman's Comp. and Liability). Office staff were polite and prompt in answering questions. Would highly recommend.
Description of Work: Due to hail damage needed Roofing replaced, plus new Gutters and Downspounts. One of Principals, Mark Steck despite huge backlog of work from storms, from day I phoned in July for inspection and quote he responded with visit to the house within 10 days. While I had to wait about 45 days before my work was started, once he was able to commit to a date workers were on site in less than 1 week. For Roofing replacement work sent a crew of 6 all of whom were exceptionally polite, professional and anxious to please. Took about 1 1/2 work days to complete, and shingle type and quality was superior to existing roof, and did flashing work that previous roofer had skipped. Same day roofing was completed gutter crew of 2 removed all old gutters and downspouts and installed new (1 inch larger) in 1 day.

Mark provided an estimate in a timely manner, and that's where the fun started. The work he was proposing to do was repair work from the April 27 hailstorm, so my insurance was involved. That was the source of the problems. After much back and forth between my insurance company and Mark, it just didn't make sense for him to take the job because he wouldn't be able to make any money (based on what my insurance was willing to offer). I would have liked to have been able to have CRC take care of all of these repairs for me as most people seem very pleased with the work that they do. I have confidence in their ability to do good work. My only source of displeasure in dealing with Mark is that of communication. It frequently took a couple of follow up calls to prod him to contact my insurance company or to revise the estimate or to do some sort of follow up. I understand how busy he is, and mid-way through the process an office manager came onto the scene, which seemed to help things greatly. All that being said, I would definitely consider hiring CRC for future work. I'd rather have to wait a little longer for good work than to get poor work done quickly.
Description of Work: CRC provided us an estimate to perform repairs to our siding, 1 window, all gutters, and window screens, and re-roof our house. Mark came out promptly to perform the estimate and provided me the estimate via email shortly thereafter. We ended up not being able to work with Mark, as detailed below.

The work went so well that we will be having CRC remodeling do extensive remodeling of our 40 year old home. Most of the start to finish story is listed above. The only concern on our part as homeowners was the deck covering. The deck covering consists of sheets of translucent corregated plastic that had originally been installed with a three corregation overlap that ensured no rain would leak through to the deck. CRC remodeling installed the corregated sheeting with only one overlap and used a sealant to seal on sheet to another. This gave us concern that one overlap might not be enough to prevent seepage of rain. The CRC remodeling estimator said that the sealant would compensate for the lack of the extra overlap of the sheeting and that the company would replace the sheeting if we were not satisifed. They would back their work for one year. They did an outstanding job in the roof to deck overhang region. We are satified knowing that the one leak found on the decking after a soft rain would be taken care of and that if we had any additional problems, that CRC remodeling would do as it stated and reinstalled the deck cover as orginally designed.
Description of Work: The roof and deck cover, decking and gutters received extensive damage due to a spring hail storm. CRC Roofs was called after receiving the home insurance check and given the list of damages that the insurance company estimator had reported. The entire area of East Tennessee received extensive damage so most of the roofing companies were booked with hundreds of homes on their lists. CRC was called and an appointment was arranged with their manager. He was on time and promptly inspected the damage and within a week we had an estimate of the damage which was below the amount estimated by the insurance company. He explained in detail the work he would do for the estimate and told us that he guaranteed his company's work for one year. The most difficult part of the job was to connect the existing roof line with the deck covered structure to ensure that their would be no leaks that could reach the deck itself. CRC explained how they intend to improve on the design with a triple barrier that would provide the protection from damage to the underlayment and to the facias underneath the deck covering. In his inspection of our home he found damages to the chimney the insurance estimator had missed and documented these. An extended claim will be filed thanks to CRC Roofs. CRC said that they would be at our property on a given date. Discounting the days that rain prevented the work to be done, they were on time and quickly did the job improving the guttering installation, using the same roofing material as was on the home and had the job finished in two days. The work included power washing the deck railings in preparation of painting which is left to be done but we were very satisfied with the roofing materials and installation.

Several parts of our house were damaged by the hail storm in April. The insurance company suggested to find a contractor that can do all the needed repair work. I called Mark Steck of Custom Renovation Co. and he worked with the second insurance adjuster sent by the insurance company to revise the damage estimate prepared by the first insurance adjuster. Based on his recommendations, Custom Renovation and its affiliate CRC Roofs was contracted to replace the roofing and the rest of the hail damage repair work. An unusually large number of people in the area have hail damage on their houses and roofs, all the roofers and contractors in the area are very busy. Since our roof did have leaks caused by the hail storm, CRC crew came out in about 10 days after signing the contract to do the re-roofing. Approximately six to eight men worked on the roof for two days. They removed all of the old shingles, installed a new synthetic underlayment beneath the new shingles, replaced the damaged vent cap and skylight. They did a commendable job. Since roofing is a labor intensive job, there are a few issues I noticed, such as, skylight trim covering and rain water drainage away from corner. When I brought the issues up to Mark?s attention, they were immediately taken care of. Mr. Steck and his crew are very professional.

The drainage system performed perfectly during the 5+ inches of rain the Knoxville area received over the Labor Day weekend. I plan on getting rid of my sump pumps and hoses. Mark is very easy to work with. Originally the estimate included pouring a concrete overlay over the existing concrete slab to pitch water away from the house. I told him that I did not particularly like that idea; concrete repair work is difficult to get right. He thought about it and agreed with me. He then agreed to replace the slab for the price of a concrete pump truck ($350), which still seems like a very good deal to me. As with most large projects the scope of the work kept increasing. Once the old vanities were removed for the tile placement, I thought about replacing them. I did not know what to purchase, which is what I told Mark's project manager Heath. I received a call from Mark on a Saturday morning from one of the local suppliers. He was there with his son buying supplies for his business. He told me that he would help with the vanities. He spent three hours of his own time helping me decide what to buy. This particular store did not have all that we needed, but another of their stores 20 miles away did. He arranged to have them picked up and delivered to the house at no cost to me. The projects took longer to complete than I hoped, mostly because the gutter replacement was originally through a CRC subcontractor. With all the rain that we had in our area during April it is almost impossible to get a roofer or a gutter contractor. This past week while I was eating supper I heard and saw a ladder being placed against the side of the house. I looked outside and saw three CRC trucks ; one of the trucks had a brand new gutter cutting machine on a trailer. Mark got tired of waiting for the subcontractor. During the inspection period Mark found at least five of the 18" x 18" tiles that he was not happy with and had his men reset them. There was a lot of settlement on the drainage ditches. Mark had at least three loads of topsoil delivered and compacted without me saying anything. He took care of all finding on the inspection list without questioning them. The CRC crew were all very polite and courteous. Mark and I were on first name basis, but all his crew addressed me Mr. "LastName". Even though all the good contractors are overwhelmed with work due to the damaging rain / hail storms in our area in April, I never had troubles getting in touch with Mark when I needed to talk with him. In fact this was not necessary, since he did a good job of keeping me informed. Initially CRC was more expensive for the tile replacement than some other companies that I had estimates from; however, they did more work for the money, and they are very reasonable for any additional work that needs to be done. One of the estimates that I received for the tile replacement did not intend to remove the vanities before installing the tile nor did any of them re-dress the baseboards. There was additional flooring repair in one of the bathrooms as well as some additional plumbing required to replace the new toilet in the laundry room, and several layers of wallpaper in the laundry room to be removed that were not covered by the original estimate. Mark never asked for more money for this work but I offered to pay for it. I was impressed enough with Mark that I gave him the keys to my house while I was on vacation so that he could keep working. This allowed him more flexibilty in scheduling his work alsol CRC is not a one project company. They want your repeat business. I have already started my list of new projects for them.
Description of Work: BACKGROUND During April of this year Knoxville received two rainstorms that flooded my basement. The second of the two storms had damaging hail that dented cars left outside and damaged a high percentage of the roofs in the area. The water entered the basement through a sliding glass door that rested on a concrete slab and through the garage. I have had this drainage problem for the twenty-five years that I lived in the house. Every time there is a large rain forecasted, I am outside with my two sump pumps. I tried several times to have the drainage problem fixed but with no luck. I decided that I needed to get it fixed before I retired. I found CRC (Mark Steck) on Angie's List. WORK DESCRIPTION-OUTSIDE PHASE The outside phase was a creative, innovative design of a drainage system. It consisted of adding French drains, replacing a concrete slab, adding a new concrete retaining wall, providing driveway drainage by adding a flush gutter along the entire east end of my house (garage location), adding a drainage basin and piping at the low end of my driveway, gutter/downspout replacement (all larger than original) with quality leaf guards, replacing sliding glass patio door with French door that was set higher than old sliding glass door. WORK DESCRIPTION-INSIDE PHASE Ceramic floor replacement in downstairs living area, laundry room, and two upstairs bathrooms; painted laundry room, two bathrooms, and wall area in garage and downstairs living area not covered with paneling; replaced a washing machine box and installed a new toilet in laundry room; replaced vanity cabinets in laundry room and two bathrooms; replaced lighting fixture in laundry room; one upstairs bathroom flooring needed repairing; plumbing had to be modified in laundry room to allow new toilet installation; sealed bottom of wall between garage and downstairs living area; re-dressed molding removed for tile installation; EXTRAS CRC did some repair work for me without charging for it. This included replacing a light fixture in the vent hood of my stove, replacing an electrical switch, repairing the concrete curb at the beginning of my driveway, and replacing the posts that supported the deck above the new concrete slab. CRC did a good job of interfacing with the neighbors during the drainage installation. I was not aware of the utility / water easement rights that we property owners had. I even asked the Town of Farragut Engineer to inspect the drainage system, which was not required. He confirmed that the location of all the drainage outflow pipes were the only and best choice that CRC had and advised my neighbor behind me that they needed to do something similar.

Overall it went well. Due to early morning rain, the job wasn't started until after noon, but it was completed in about 4 hours. The gutters look very good and we are pleased with the result.

These guys are the best when it comes to service. Phone calls are answered promptly, questions are answered promptly, estimates are given promptly, and my gutter replacement was scheduled for the next business day and was completed in just one day! I interacted with three members of the company. All three were very professional and provided the estimate with full explanation of the work to be performed, spoken in plain language. The work was completed to the quality agreed on. The gutter looks very attractive and appears to be attached properly to the fascia just below the roof. The product is just as was promised.
