"McDaniel Window and Door has been locally owned and operated in the Shoals area for over 47 years. Under the operation of Mike McDaniel, the company had a well-known reputation for good quality product, installation, and customer care service. When I chose McDaniel for my recent installation, this is the man and the company that I thought I would be doing business with. I was wrong. Mr. McDaniel is no longer involved in the day-to-day operation. Now it is being run by his stepson Woodard F. Watkins. Mr. Watkins is the co-owner, Vice President, and Salesperson of McDaniel Window and Door. He “personally” handles all aspects of your order from start to finish including window measurements, estimated quotes, order placement, shipping, scheduling, and warranty issues. I wish that I had known this beforehand and had done my research, not only into McDaniel Window and Door but of Woodard F. Watkins as well (complaints, reviews, ect). Because if I had known then what I know now, I would never have entrusted my project to this man or to this company. My personal experience with Mr. Woodard Watkins and McDaniel Window and Door was one of delays, poor communication, conflicting information, poor customer service, and a poor-quality window installation. After what I experienced and the way that I was treated by Mr. Watkins, I would never recommend doing business with McDaniel Window and Door to anyone. I trusted that McDaniel Window and Door would do a quality install and treat my home with respect and care. A decision I deeply regret. I put my faith in the wrong company and the wrong man. On September 8, 2023, I placed an order with Mr. Watkins for installation of 10 replacement windows at a cost of $8275.00. The lead time for the windows Mr. Watkins quoted me was 3 weeks. Thirteen weeks later, on December 12, 2023, McDaniel Window and Door installed eight of the ten replacement windows. Two windows were missing from the order along with 3 window screens. On December 14th and 16th, I contacted Mr. Watkins to address problems with the installation and that I was not happy with the final product, the quality, or the service that I received: 1. The installers left debris in my yard such as insulation, glass shards, wood, and plastic. They failed to use drop cloths and protective footwear as I was told that they would when working inside the home. As a result, there was damage to my hardwood flooring (chips, scratches, black sticky residue stains). 2. All eight window frames are bowed or curved at the base of the frame. I feel this is a result of strain from improper fit, poor installation, and incorrect measurements. 3. Dented Damaged areas on some of the frames 4. Water Leakage at the base of semicircular transom window I have continued to reach out to Mr. Watkins to request that the window frames be repaired, replaced, or refund in full. It has been over two months since my installation, and the remaining two windows still have not been installed nor have the problems with the window frames been repaired or replaced. I feel this is a breach of contract and failure to honor the warranty. I have asked for a full refund at this point, which I have not received."

"The Smart Home features they installed, such as thermostat and door locks, etc. do not always work. For example, the Honeywell thermostat can no longer be operated from our phones and is difficult to install. Remote door locks are also unpredictable."

It’s usually better to repair damaged interior doors and replace damaged exterior doors, but it depends on the type and extent of the damage. Damage to interior doors won’t threaten your home’s security, so if a repair or partial replacement of only the door (not replacing the door frame) is possible, that route should save you some money. Damage to an exterior door can compromise your home’s security, so it’s often better to replace it entirely, especially if there’s frame damage. You can ask your door installer which course of action is best for your situation.
The average cost to install a door is around $1,100, but you could pay anywhere from $150 for a hollow-core interior door installation up to $2,000 or a high-end exterior door installation. There are a few cost factors to consider to get an accurate price, including whether your wall opening exists, the type of door, the quality and security of the door, whether you need to replace the frame, and the door size. You can expect to pay $150 to $700 for a standard 36-by-80-inch door and between $400 and $1,600 for an 80-by-48-inch door.
If you’re replacing an interior door, it’s best to get the work done in the summer or winter, as door installation professionals are the least busy during these seasons and might charge lower labor costs based on the decreased demand. You can also potentially save money by hiring a professional to install your exterior door during these seasons, but most homeowners wait until the spring or fall so that the extreme temperatures don’t put added strain on their HVAC systems while the door is being added or replaced.
Door installation usually takes three and four hours, including removing the old door and frame, fitting the new door and frame in place, shimming it to make sure it’s perfectly level, and making adjustments to the hinges and locking mechanisms to ensure proper functionality. A door-hanging professional can replace an interior door in between one and two hours. Door installation will take significantly longer if your installer needs to create a wall opening, and it can take less time if the existing door frame remains.
It’s possible to install a door yourself if the wall opening already exists, but the work is rather complicated, and a professional installation is usually well worth the investment. For your door to work and close properly, you’ll need to shim and level the door frame in your wall perfectly, which can be difficult. Additionally, we recommend you always hire a professional door installer to place an exterior door, as mistakes during the installation process can lead to poor security for your home.
